THE

LETTER FROM EDITORS Summer time brings about all sorts of fashion. Some faves, and some faux pas that walk the fine line of fabulous to flawed. That is what makes Summer style so much fun. This issue is a celebration of hot nights, daring days, and that feeling of freedom that one can only get in the heat! When temperature rises, so do the hem lines. These pages are filled with tanks, short shorts, sun dresses, bleached tresses, and bikinis. All in all, they make us want to vacay! So, pour yourself a margarita, dip your toes in some water, and flip through our celebration of summer.

XOXO,

Kadie and Lynzi

jolitajewellery.com It is unusual to come across that special something so captivating and memorable in a brand, which espouses both a fresh vivacity and an unrivalled timelessness at the same time. Jolita, however, a one-of-a-kind and colorful jewelry brand, does this with flair and personality. Algis Abromaitis (the visionary designer behind Jolita), with the help of his sister Jolita, turned his hobby into a thriving business. Passionate about clashing colors, whilst taking inspirations from museums and different cultures, has honed his craft with care and perceptive patience. Their bedazzling pieces have been featured on runways, magazines and fashion editorials. Yinsey Wang quizzes the siblings on their inspirations, teamwork and aspirations. Y: As a brother-sister team, tell us more about your working relationship and how Jolita changed it, if it did. J: We both bring a different set of skills, which works really well. Algis designs and hand-makes all the pieces. He loves creating, so happily works away at the studio. Jolita is very passionate not only about jewels, but also about social media, so she takes care of all the social media accounts, including writing our blog. She also deals with sales, customers as well as organizes and attends photoshoots, hence working closely with stylists, photographers, hair and make up artists. Y: From where do you get your inspiration for your different pieces? J: Algis likes going to museums. He can spend a whole day wandering around the Mayan and Aztec sections of the British Museum. He walks around until he gets tired, and then the next morning he is able to make something through osmosis! He also loves to read, Marquez is his favorite. He also loves Mori jewelry from the periods running between the 16th century to Victorian times. This was when human hair was used to create jewelry. Our braided collection is created with silk braids, which is Algis’s interpretation of Mori jewelry. Algis is also particularly fond of skulls, which feature in our pieces very often. Beautiful flowers are the inspiration behind our colors, which are also created by Algis in our studio, to ensure we have a unique color palette.

Y: Technique, hard work, and inspiration: what sort of balance do you attribute to these factors in your success so far? J: All of these factors are important. It took Algis a very long time to perfect his technique. A lot of experimentation and hard work was involved, because you have to find out what works for you. Algis can’t draw, but he can visualize his pieces quite clearly so when he starts working, he simply trusts his intuition. Y: Tell us about your appetite for collaboration -how has working with photographers, models and stylists shaped Jolita’s brand and self-perception? J: We are very lucky, because stylists and photographers love our pieces, probably because they are so colorful, so we get approached to loan our jewels for the shoots quite a lot. There are so many amazingly talented creative people and each one of them has their own vision, so it is always interesting to see the final result.

The same piece can be styled in so many different ways, that each time it gets a completely different meaning/ persona. It is always very rewarding to see our jewels in the shoots, because that is when they come alive. Y: What pieces do you think expresses both of your personalities the most? J: Algis’ major favourite is the London Voodoostatement bangle. It was made with a number of components, such as rhinestones, skulls, semi-precious stones, and pearls. It was sold to a customer in New York. From his latest pieces, he loves asymmetric and clashing pieces. As for Jolita, the favorites change very often as she always finds Algis’ designs surprise her. So, one day she might love one piece, but the next day, it is something new and different. And it is the most amazing feeling, because not everyone gets to spend their days looking and trying on beautiful jewels, where each one is so unique and different from another! Y: Who is the ideal Jolita woman? J: Someone who is an individual, likes standing out from the crowd, and bold enough to showcase their personality.

Y: What started Jolita? J: Algis had a recurring dream for over a week. It was just a static image of a bracelet. By the end he was so tired seeing the same piece that he decided it must be a sign. The dream was so intense that he felt compelled to make something. So a friend of his took him to a shop to buy materials and it started from there! Although self-taught, Algis attended a few classes to deepen his knowledge in certain techniques. It took a long time to learn how to do things, initially it was difficult and it took a long time, but he stuck to it. He made more and more pieces that received an amazing response from friends. Algis was encouraged by friends and Jolita to set up his own company with his sister. Y: Tell us a bit about where you feel Jolita is headed. J: We have a lot of plans and ideas; we also get approached to do collaborations, but we don’t always have enough time to work on everything. Y: What has been Jolita’s greatest milestone so far? J: We are very happy with what we have achieved so far - our pieces are on display in some of the finest boutiques in the Gulf and Russia. JUTE MAGAZINE

THE ART OF

PETER SHOUKRY

artist & model Peter Shoukry

petershoukry.com

At the age of 15, Peter Shoukry started out by displaying his artwork at coffee shops, and local vendors in Los Angeles. He later became recognized and picked up for group exhibitions by galleries in downtown LA. His career started to ignite right after high school with a show at the Museum of Contemporary art in Los Angeles. Shortly after, his career became International with gallery and museum exhibitions all around the world including Paris and Vienna. Not to mention International Shows with the European Union. His abstract art has also sold in private showrooms alongside originals by Picasso, Dali, and Cezanne.

After becoming recognized by the legendary fashion house Louis Vuitton in a world class art contest, Peter Shoukry was inspired to create a new wave of art, one he calls “Fashion Abstract Art.” Bright colors, rich traditional textiles, and designs fitted in an original illustration that depicts a story of inspiration from his abstract mind. His design style involves a process of first sketching, and then tapping off bit by bit. His process, though painstakingly labor intensive, lends a magnificent result. Peter Shoukry’s art forces you to contemplate it, to stare at it for hours, drawn like a moth to a flame, and then to

walk away, pondering what you just saw, deeply affected. He was recently signed as a model by one of America's elite modeling agencies, “Envy Model Management.” “I have always been fascinated by the French saying ‘la vie behome’ which means to ‘live the life of an artist.‘ I will never stop seeking new ways to express my creativity, whether its behind a canvas or in front of a camera,” says Peter. Peter has had an incredible art career; the sky is the limit.

INTERVIEW Ask any young person what they want to do with their lives. You will get answers such as “policeman,” “fireman,” and “astronaut,” among others. For Peter Shoukry however, “artist” was his, and though most people do not get to fulfill such youthful goals, Peter made his first grade dream a reality. Born in the heart of Cairo, Egypt, his family quickly fled to avoid the persecution that comes with being a Coptic Christian in a theocratic regime. Once on American soil, Peter picked up his first colored pencil and never looked back. His artistic vision coupled with his nearly obsessive attention to detail meant people could not help but take notice. Soon, galleries were calling and his art was featured at The Happening, CB, Hanger, UGallery, and many others. Now, success in southern California would be the final goal of some, but for Peter it was just the beginning. His art was featured at Pop-UP and Opulen galleries in New York. At this point, Peter’s art career began to snowball. He was sponsored by the presidency of the European Union on his world art tour at venues in London, Berlin, and Paris, including the world famous Michele Sommerlath galleries.

The question Peter gets most often is “What inspires you?” It took him a long time of deep introspective thought before he finally came up with an answer that did not leave him second guessing himself: “everything.“ At first that may seem a cliché answer from an artist, but when explaining himself it really made sense. He said, “Sometimes I’ll be walking down the street, see a plant that’s in mid-bloom, or a hear a bird chirping, and I’ll quickly go back home and start a floral inspired piece or paint colors on a rainbow lorikeet that I drew.” As his art and style began to grow, so did his fan base, and ultimately private collectors. His wait list is currently at nine months; but with good reason, “creating art that takes a bit of me with it is not a short process.” His clients would agree. One of his clients even helped point Peter on a new path that encompasses his passion for art: fashion. Growing up, some of Peter’s first pieces were of shoes, shirts, jackets, and scarfs. Little did he know at the time that soon his two passions would meet. He was approached by Slater Model Management for his unique look and style that was “scarce in this industry.” Style has always been an asset of those who least attempt to portray it, but rather exude it from their own natural JUTE MAGAZINE

137

sense of fashion. Peter’s relationship would not last long with Slater however, because he was later recruited by Envy Model Management, his current partner. Now working in conjunction with several urban magazines, Peter is the focal point of a media campaign in New York City and will be featured on several billboards. Peter’s journey is on the precipice of what will surely be a highly successful career. However, ask him, and he will tell you, “I’m just glad to be here, doing what I love.“ Art Pieces Previous Page Not Another Goodbye Above Left Going to Paint the World Above Right Goodbye Old Painting Next Page Man of the Hour

Truly, there really is no greater success than doing what you are passionate about for a living. “I do what I do for every kid that has a dream, no matter how far out it may be or whatever ridicule they may get…because honestly, I was laughed at as a kid when I said I wanted to be an artist…and now I can’t help but laugh back.” Here is to those who dare to dream big, to sustain a legacy of wealth and power, not in a monetary sense, but an artistic one.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY I was born in 1986 to a struggling family who couldn't live in a prejudice country because of their Egyptian origin and Coptic Christian faith. My family immigrated to Los Angeles, California, after winning a lottery to come to the United States. I was just ten years old when I arrived, and instantly fell in love with Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. I never knew I was able to draw; my parents didn't want me to pursue art. My father was an artist as well, but never made a living or anything like that of his talents; he thought it was a waste of time. My parents never really cared to provide any tools to see if I could draw or not throughout my childhood; they didn’t want to distract me. It wasn’t until my freshman year in high school where I had to take an elective class; I naturally chose art like all my friends because I heard it was an easy grade. My first assignment was to make a still-life drawing of some scissors on a table, presented in front of the whole class. I drew the scissors, but that’s not all I drew. I drew them cutting each other; I made them look angry and violently hurting each other. My art teacher was very impressed

with the piece and asked me what my logic behind the piece. I simply explained that sometimes we can hurt our own kind because we are able to. The next four years of high school she developed my talents and encouraged me to develop my skills. I created numerous art pieces and showcased them in school events, and local venues around the city. After graduating I was honored to be a part of an exhibition that took place in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California. My art career since then has been enriched with many gallery exhibitions, international shows, and museums. I've sold paintings to private art collectors and people everywhere around the country. Art to me is only art if it’s trying to say something. I have never made an art piece to show something that is obvious; I will show it to you the way I see it. With every painting I try to make that line between reality and imagination thinner, until I have no idea what’s real anymore. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and since the beholder (me) is an artist, I can show you how or why it’s beautiful.
