Editor-in-Chief Magazine Graphic Design
The summer issue is upon us and I’m wildly excited! I mean, have you seen the cover story by Brian Ziff? It’s pretty epic! This issue dawns some serious change for Jute Magazine. This is the last issue in the states as the publication (and myself) is moving to the Czech Republic. I’m overjoyed with the upcoming move. I know most of the readers are in Europe, and this move will hopefully mean a permanent home base for the magazine, and a step toward print runs. I’m taking everything in stride, but I can’t help but be excited. Back to the current issue. We have some amazing editorials and emerging designers in this issue, as always, and what I feel is a very mature and confident take on summer. I hope everyone enjoys the issue! And keep your eyes on Jute in the next year. Big things are coming!
XOXO Lynzi

It is also a great place Dalia: Travelling to Bali for your new collection to meet like-minded designers, photographers and sounds wonderful. What part of the creation pro- models. Splitting my time between countries has also proSara: I actually manufacture my clothing in Bali vided the opportunity to collaborate with differso that is why I am here now! My partner and I ent models and photographers from all over the made the decision to split our time between Aus- world. I recently did a shoot in Sydney with a tralia, Bali and the US for the next 12 months. photographer and film maker called David ColThere are so many interesting people in Bali – both lier who made a short Super8 film and amazing 48 jute summer 2016
photos on film, digital and Polaroid. I’m also talking to an Italian photographer who will do a shoot in Milan with some local Italian girls so I’m looking forward to that! Travelling definitely helps with opening new doors and meeting new legends. Dalia: With more than a decade of fashion experience, where do you look for inspiration on new ideas? Sara: I am constantly researching and getting inspired by everything around me. I have to admit both Instagram and Pinterest are my main sources of inspiration to see what is happening in the world (not just in fashion). There is so much content out there and people doing interesting, cool things that are so accessible thanks to the internet. I follow lots of people and stay up to date with what they are posting and vice versa - it’s funny, I’ve created a little online network of people I’ve never met, but feel like I know! Spending time in Bali means I get a good look at global fashion, as there are so many people here from all over the world. I also meet local people with amazing skills that I want to add to my collection – like this season I found an embroiderer who I have been working with on new techniques and fabrications to create some exciting new pieces. The Melbourne fashion scene is pretty interesting too (my hometown). There are a lot of up and coming designers there, some who produce handmade garments in Melbourne and some that have been around for years and still manage to re-invent themselves. People in the Melbourne “scene” have a distinct fashion look that will always remain relevant to my collections and be a source of inspiration. 49 jute summer 2016

Dalia: When do you plan on releasing your next collection? Sara: The next collection for SS16, which is quite different to the first two, will hit stores in July this year. The collection is called CHAV, a homage to the stereotypical Chav style from the UK. Think council estates, slick back ponytails and hoop earrings – I’m looking forward to having some fun with styling some campaign shots near the commission flats when I am in Melbourne next month. In Bali, I am currently working on both AW17 for Australia and SS17 for the US, which I will be showing at NYFW in September. I have had to design two collections simultaneously for the northern and southern hemispheres. I am very excited to be part of a group show at NYFW for my debut on the catwalk as Sara Bailes the label. Dalia: I LOVE your designs, specifically your use of textures with the quilted and knitted pieces. Can you give a little insight into your creative process and how you came up with the concepts? Sara: It is very important to me to use new techniques, fabrications and textures every season. I love mixing them all together too! Both Gorman and Karen Walker were very print focused, and although I will always have in-house print designs as part of my collections, I do not gravitate towards prints naturally. I think this is why I want to focus more on texture and technique as a means for individuality. Through a lot of research and trial and error, I have found a handful of total legends in Bali who can make all my ideas for new textures and techniques a reality. When I visited my knitwear factory for the first time I only had a couple of ideas to discuss with them, but when I saw all of the different styles/yarns/techniques they could achieve, I decided to create a capsule knit collection which has become an integral part of my future collections. Dalia: The weather in Colorado can be a little unpredictable, which might explain my obsession with all of the jackets. A close second favorite is the knit tracksuit pants. Of all the designs, do you have any pieces that stand out as favorites for you? Sara: I feel like the weather in Colorado and Melbourne would be quite similar – hot one minute, freezing the next!
I think definitely the quilted bomber – it was the very first thing I designed for my debut collection, then I reinvented in denim for AW16. I’ve always loved quilting for some reason – my graduation collection at fashion school had a lot of quilting in it and I can’t seem to let go of it! I have no doubt there will be similar quilt techniques used in future collections! Second fave is the knit hot pants. That’s probably why I keep putting them into photoshoots and wearing them ALL the time…there may be some new versions coming out for NYFW in brushed mohair! Dalia: Is it correct that even though you are based in Australia, your collections are available globally through www.Sarabailes.com? Sara: Yes! When I launched my label I had a strong focus to create an International label. After working as part of the design team for Karen Walker, I learnt a lot about being a global brand and the importance of the global market. Although I love Australia, I want my products to be globally accessible and feel like they are well suited to other parts of the world! I did make a decision this year that I want to focus on the USA for the next 12 months to grow my market there! I feel like the Sara Bailes aesthetic is very suited to the American market and I’m excited to visit and do some exploring. Dalia: Although the collections vary, I felt a chic every day type vibe to them all. Was this intentional, or is there an image you’d like people to simulate with the brand? Sara: Ok good. That is totally my intention and I am glad that it translates! From the outset I wanted my label to be wearable and comfortable whilst remaining polished and feminine. Naturally, my own personal style comes through into my designs – classic, casual and bold with the ability to evolve season after season. My garments must be flattering on the female body and have an element of fun to them. There is a lot of fashion out there that looks amazing and is technical perfection, but when I look at it I wonder how I would wear it – how I would sit down, drive a car, do day-to-day activities…so I wanted to create something that women can wear every day and feel confident and sexy in. 51 jute summer 2016
Dalia: Is there anything specific you’d like Jute readers to know about your line? Sara: A really important element of my line is that it is produced ethically by a small and dedicated team of Indonesians and Australians. I visit my factories on a daily basis and work alongside a team of talented artisans. It’s so easy these days to shoot an email off with a design spec to China and get a finished product a month or so later – not really knowing exactly where or how it was made. My patternmaker Betty and I work closely together every day that I am in Bali and employ a small team of pattern cutters and machinists. I ride around on my scooter to source fabrics and trims and dedicate a lot of time to creating and maintaining relationships with the people I work with. I actually didn’t set out to be an “ethical” brand, but I’ve always put a huge importance on relationships with suppliers and producers, and it naturally evolved this way.

reset priority by Olivia Louden The key words for luxury swimwear and lingerie brand Reset Priority’s SS16 collection are “confidence,” “quality,” and “worldwide travel.” I was lucky enough to get to ask creative director Ester Milano a few questions about this year’s campaign from new, high tech and innovative fabrics to a photoshoot in the Mediterranean. Olivia: What can you tell me about your summer campaign? Ester: We made this shooting on a very sunny day close in Costa Brava, Barcelona. It’s a very nice location that gives us room to play, the landscapes and the colour of the water is beautiful. Ideal for a Mediterranean flair. Vivianne, our dutch model, was just arrived in Barcelona and we’re happy to have had the chance to book her. Pics are from Mireia Grau and...we had fun and a swim after! Olivia: What sets this year’s collection apart from your previous SS collections? Ester: With the SS16 collection we kept intact the values of the brand such as premium quality, international flair and bright pieces which are innovative and fitting. We added on top new hand applied details and grow the possibility of mix and match tops and bottoms as well as sizes, so that you can find your perfect fit in each series.
Olivia: Where did you draw your design inspiration? Ester: Our design inspirations come from different places, from fashion shoots to new product designs, pictures taken while travelling (this is the case for example for our Flower East collection - we shot heliconia flowers during a trip to Singapore). Color references too can come from pictures taken somewhere and then organized for the purpose. The designs are made on a sketchbook... Then we look into all the proposals and have to do the first selection. We then start pattern making and create the digital versions of the designs which help us with playing with colours later on. Olivia: How does your brand’s emphasis on both luxury and environmental stability work together? Ester: We want our pieces to be extremely comfortable and that our customers perceive the difference. We reinforce the durability of our pieces, which last more than just one season and give a very good product value. When we select fabrics we also look into certifications and that is why we use Xtra Life Lycra which lasts longer, as well as OEKO TEX certified garments, which imply manufacturers follow environmental and socially responsible rules. We just recently started to 85 jute summer 2016
look into Regenerated fabrics too...so beautiful and high quality! If these fabrics exist, it’s our conscious answer to select them! Fashion should do its part in preserving the world, right? Everything is produced in Spain and Italy using the best materials...this may be the new luxury, more responsible, more durable and with eyes on the environment. Olivia: How do you want a person wearing your designs to feel? Ester: Beautiful, empowered, and definitely comfortable! If one of these is missing, then try another one! With a bikini, it’s not a one model fits all. Olivia: Your brand has a lot of international flair. How is that reflected in this season’s campaign? Ester: I think mostly it’s reflected in the models. We included some innovations such as surf styles and threads as well as velvet (yes, swimwear velvet!) and ultra-thin neoprene. You can find these innovative pieces in the campaign too! Olivia: Finally, where are your designs available for purchase? Ester: Our pieces are available for purchase in selected boutiques all over Spain, and some additional retailers bare from UK, Florida and Belgium. You can find Reset Priority through international e-tailors, and of course on www.resetpriority.com

Katerina Riazanova by olivia louden Russian designer Katerina Riazanova’s new swimwear collection emphasizes confidence, fitness, and independence. Bright colors and unusual fabrics reflect a woman’s inner strength and need to stand out. I had the chance to ask Katerina a few questions about the SS16 line and how everything comes together.
132 jute summer 2016
swimwear
What can you tell me about your SS16 swimwear collection? This collection was designed for a confident woman who wants to be the center of attention. It’s bright, playful and colorful. That kind of swimwear sets the tone for the whole summer and vacations as well. As a designer I like the idea of “relaxed” fitness and practice it myself. It means that you don’t need fitness gym anymore to look like body divas, who spend most of their time in gym and concentrate only on their body. The new philosophy is to be concentrated on inside feelings, emotions, and personal experiences and accompany it with good body shape, and I am not only talking about yoga, it’s broader - dancing, pole dancing, boxing, triathlon, swimming .. It depends on your body state. How did you arrive at the decision to use neoprene? It was my first step after I decided to start my small business. I started to look for interesting materials for my collection and firstly, I wanted to make dresses from neoprene ;) But then I met supplier who showed me different kinds of neoprene including titanium covered neoprene, thin and thick ones. So it was pivotal point and I started to design
sportish swimwear using neoprene. It could be another material in the future, but for now I just love the idea about different textures and tactile feelings - neoprene is just my first stage. The bold colors are also very striking. What do you wish to inspire with them? I think bold colors are just powerful. If you wear bold, bright colors for swimming, you feel as confident as wearing bold black dress for evening. Your campaign is very fitness oriented. What can you tell me about that? The idea behind that was the new geometry of space for fitness and training. As I said, I like the idea of “relaxed” fitness, which is best practiced in a cozy environment, where the mind says goodbye to obsessive manner of the ideal, and the body tends to get pleasure from sport. The most important thing is pleasure of the future achievements beyond comparison with someone else. Creating geometry of space, we switch to “slow life” mode and reside in harmony. It means achieving results because you decide so, not watching others doing it - it’s strong power inside confident women. 133 jute summer 2016

How do you blur the lines between style and function? For now the main thing for me is that woman can wear all of it - function, then I style clothes in a way that translates the idea behind. The image and style is everything now. It could be basic blank T-shirt, but you style it in a way that everybody wants that particular t-shirt. So it’s an interesting mind game for designers today. What sort of individual do you see wearing your designs, and how do you want her to feel? I see strong confident active woman, sometimes she translates it through her image and clothes, and sometimes she looks fragile and changes her outfit accordingly. It’s more about inner state and feelings. Shopping is intuitive, so all the buying and ‘I want it’ instincts lies in our brain. Finally, where are your designs available?
