Urte Rinkeviciute byYINSEY WANG Urte Rinkeviciute is a fashion designer with a creative approach to design. Vibrant, clean lines and beautiful structure clearly demonstrate her mastery over the craft. With equally bold colors and textures, Rinkeviciute is definitely one to watch in the upcoming days. Feature’s writer, Yinsey Wang, interviews the young, driven designer on her passion for knitwear and fashion, as well as her abstract inspirations.

YOUR COLLECTION IS VERY UNIQUE, PARTICULARLY IN ITS STRUCTURE. WHERE DID THOSE DESIGN ELEMENTS ORIGINATE FROM? For years, I’ve been inspired by the concepts behind Balenciaga. My genuine admiration of clean, architectural shapes naturally influenced me while I developed my designs. Such has helped me to achieve diverse looks and dimensions in my work. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO WORK IN KNITWEAR? The idea of yarn turning into something really patterned and textured has always fascinated me. However, the real journey began when I started my degree along the knitwear path. Overall, it has given me a broad understanding of how to approach design and work with different fabrics.
HOW RIGOROUS ARE YOU WITH REVIEWING AND REVAMPING A DESIGN? OR DO YOU KNOW AT THE ONSET OF CREATING SOMETHING WHAT IT IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE?
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
I have always dreamt about creating my own business. It requires knowledge and decisiveness; I am willing to learn these Usually, I have a very clear idea of what traits over the next few years and later apthe final design going to be like. GOLDEN GIRL - ALIGHIERI JEWELLERY Designer: ROSH MAHTANI, By STEFANIA PRUSCINO When I first came across Alighieri Jewellery I was scrolling through instagram - my new morning routine - and spotted this beautiful, baroque-style ring. Immediately, I knew I just had to know more about this brand and who made it. I tracked down the designer, Rosh Mahtani, to learn more about her and the her new collection ‘Teardrop.’ Unlike most new designers, Rosh, has a clear vision of her design aesthetic. Each piece in the collection is visually articulate, and the inspiration behind Alighieri Jewellery is nothing short of alluring. Read our interview below to find out more about Rosh and this one-of-a-kind, emerging brand.
GENERALLY SPEAKING, GIVE ME THE RUNDOWN OF HOW YOU CAME TO BASE YOUR FIRST BRAND’S COLLECTION OFF OF DANTE’S ‘DIVINE COMEDY’ AND DANTE ALIGHIERI HIMSELF? I studied French and Italian at Oxford, where we ended up spending a year studying Dante Alighieri’s work. I was attracted to (and a little bit obsessed with!) the vivid imagery and the extent to which the ‘Comedy’ has influenced art. I was also deeply attached to his home city of Florence, having resided there myself. I wanted to create one piece for every canto (a form of division in long poems), and that’s how it all began! WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU FAVOR USING MOST? DO THE PRECIOUS GEMS HAVE A DEEPER MEANING OR REPRESENTATION FROM DANTE’S ‘DIVINE COMEDY’? All the pieces are plated in 24kt gold. I love using a variety of stones, from rough off-cuts to semi-precious pearls sourced from all over the world. When I was younger I lived in Zambia and would collect bags and bags of stones, so I, personally, have an extensive collection. And the stones themselves definitely hold a deeper meaning to me: the ring with the black stone represents the moment in which Dante enters the dark wood and all is obscured. The onyx conveys this darkness and the gold cornice surrounding it symbolizes how Dante is seeing these gold flickers as he reaches the end of his journey. The jagged meteors and raw emeralds portray the scraggy landscapes of the infernal circles. And opposite that, the spherical pearls are dewy and “perfect”, to convey the celestial heavens of Paradiso.
www.avenue32.com
THE CRAFTSMANSHIP IS VERY ORGANIC IN FORM. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT MAKING THESE SHAPES? I work using the process of lost wax casting, so the pieces are first carved from blocks of wax. The wax really lends itself to this organic feeling. I use an array of carving tools, and I love the different textures that can be created, especially when the wax is heated. This is my favorite aspect of the design process. A rubber mold is then made of these figurines; they are then cast in bronze, before being gold-plated. SO IS THIS COLLECTION ALL MADE BY HAND? ARE ANY TWO PIECES THE SAME, OR DO THEY ALL HAVE SPECIAL INCONSISTENCIES THAT MAKE THE UNIQUE? The collection is made entirely by hand, so, yes, no two pieces will ever be identical. They all have their own inconsistencies, due to the imperfect nature of the molds. The stones, too, are always unique and set in their own way. Right from the start, I wanted to create jewelry whereby no two pieces would ever be the same. I think that’s what makes Alighieri special. THE BASIS OF ALIGHIERI IS A “VEHEMENT OBSESSION WITH THE IDEA OF MELANCHOLY AND IMPERFECTION.” HOW IS THIS REFLECTED IN THE COLLECTION? When I founded Alighieri, I had just finished university and was travelling without a sure idea of what I was doing or what career path to follow. There was something melancholic about this time in my life and you can see this in the imperfect textures and shapes of the Alighieri pieces. The idea that beauty and magic can be found in sadness and imperfection is something that runs through the entire collection, whether it be through the battered texture, the unpolished stones, the campaign imagery, and even the wax-sealed packaging.

DANTE’S, ‘DIVINE COMEDY’ HAS THREE SECTIONS: INFERNO, PURGATORY, AND PARADISE. WHICH OF THESE SECTIONS WERE YOU MOST INSPIRED BY AND IS REFLECTED IN THE COLLECTION? OR WAS IT AN ACCUMULATION OF ALL THREE? That’s a very good question! I would say it is definitely an amalgamation of the entire poem. However, certain pieces pertain to particular sections. The Pier della Vigna ring, for instance, is Inferno in a piece. The three cantiche are inspiring in really different ways. Inferno creates a narrative of turbulent storms, mangled branches, open-cliff surfaces, and terrifying demons. The mountain of Purgatory is so rich in artistic influences: glimmers of light and hopeful moments. The Meteor ring is an emblem of the steep incline, climbed by Dante and his guide. Paradise is all about spherical perfection, lightness, the stars and the moon. I would say the Neve Pearl ring best encapsulates this celestial realm. So in short, I’m inspired by the poem as a whole, but also love to focus on the micro-details within each section.
IT IS SAID THAT BEATRICE PORTINIARI SERVES AS THE SYMBOL OF SALVATION IN THE COMEDY. IF YOU WERE TO DRESS HER, WHICH PIECE WOULD SHE WEAR AND WHY? Another a great question! Beatrice was the love of Dante’s life; she was unattainable to Dante, and his entire journey through the after-world is towards her. She’s described as a creature of a beauty that words could not convey. I think she would wear the Luna ring, with the marble stone. It’s fitting as she represents an ephemeral, otherworldly idea. LASTLY, WHERE CAN WE FIND ALIGHIERI TODAY? Alighieri is currently sold online, at www.alighieri.co.uk, avenue32.com, and BJORK Florence. Keep your eyes peeled for more stocklists in the New Year!

YOU WERE AN ASSISTANT TO ESTELLE DEVE AND A VISUAL MERCHANDISER AT AVENUE32. HOW DID THESE EXPERIENCES INFLUENCE YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC? I think I always designed things that I wanted to wear, so I wouldn’t say that my design aesthetic at its core changed all that much. More than my designs, my previous work has influenced my understanding of the industry as a whole. I spent some time working with Estelle in Australia and I learned a great deal from her. We had a fantastic time, and she’s now a very close friend. Working at Avenue32 was instrumental in teaching me about the other facets of the industry: what buyers look for in new designers, what price-points hit that sweet spot, what sells and what does not. I also learned about how to manage the back-end of a luxury ecommerce store, which remains a vital skill today. Both of these experiences taught me so much that has been invaluable to creating Alighieri the brand, but I really have to say the people I met and their encouragement is what has really allowed the brand to grow.
