LUCKY ANIMALS an interview with Frédéric Mané of Mathon Paris
Tell me about your design style. What makes your collections stand out in the otherwise competitive industry?
If you could have any celebrity represent your brand, who would it be and why?
Nature is the principal inspiration for MATHON PARIS’ fabulous creations which are all labeled “Joaillerie de France” a seal that guarantees the products are French.
We are truly a confident brand without marketing. That’s why we consider it unnecessary to have a celebrity representing our brand. Each of our jewels are thought to be their own piece of art.
Jewels are crafted in a workshop that comes alive in the bustling sounds of rattling tweezers, the filing of metal and the distinct crackle of gold melting in the crucible. The creations that come out of this workshop are triumphs of gold and colored stones set exclusively by hand. MATHON PARIS jewelry embodies a genuine passion for beauty and excellence. Our jewels tell the stories of dreams through our unmistakable style. The commitment to the preservation of the French “savoirfaire” produces a great pride for a family that is devoted to defining a personal aesthetic unaffected by the flow of time. The company is also RJC certified. (Responsible Jewelry Council) What is your favorite piece you’ve ever created?
I would love to hear more about the Lucky Animals collection. Why did you choose those animals for your design? MATHON PARIS pays special attention to the conception in which we give our jewels its character, of uniqueness and originality, which makes every piece a committed one. We want to show a colored vision of life with a certain sense of humor. Jewelry is not standardized or driven by a marketing approach; on the contrary, it tends to reflect the personality of the person who adorns it. In a certain way, MATHON PARIS’ jewels have their own personality. One of MATHON PARIS’ symbols is the dragonfly: a magical insect with a timeless symbolism. We are used to designing a lot of cute or mesmerizing animals inspired by the our historical archives.
One of my favorite pieces is the Galapagos ring. It has a strong style with unusual stones. Indeed, each stone is cut like a tortoise carapace! This imposing carapace is typical of the Galapagos tortoise, which is further set with sugar loaf stones, our main argument to this new line. The transparency and color of the stones, ranging from sea green to mint tints, evoke the shores of the mythical archipelago. Tourmalines and peridots are specially cut by the lapidaries of Idar-Oberstain, in order to reproduce the tabular shapes of the animal’s scales. The eyes are made of bright green emeralds, in harmony with the carapace of the animal. This special cut confers a beautiful volume to the animal design. A line of scallop-setted diamonds wrap around the fine stones to underline their glare.
Do you think animal-inspired jewelry is making a comeback in the fashion industry?
Describe the type of woman who wears your jewelry.

Romantic. Discreet. Dreamer. Sensitive.
Nature and animals have always been a major source of inspiration in jewelry design. Nevertheless, nowadays, there is a trend for creating natural pieces that fall within ethical commitments that present a full respect for nature. Lastly, where can we buy your jewelry? The MATHON PARIS collection is mainly distributed in Japan, China and the Emirates. We also have our showroom in Paris near the Palais royal. Beyond that, you can get in contact with us via mail or telephone.

PASSENGER a photographic series by Kristina Jaeger Where did you grow up and how does that influence your photography? I was born in Kazakhstan in a small village where I was surrounded by beautiful forests, dry, never-ending willows, hidden creeks, bitter cold winters and gorgeous summers. These desolated areas, ruinous villages, deathly silences and mystical stories definitely left their mark on me. I love melancholy and all its secrecies. When I was eight my family and I moved to Germany. Before I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up I already had a photography series and was into movies, paintings and clothes. It was fun and made me happy. When I was seventeen I enrolled into an art school and began to study in film and animation, photography and graphic design. I like simple things and colors. I like that nature still surprises me everyday. Broken or destroyed things produce wonderful still lives, people and their faces are just inspiring. I adore black and white photography in particular. Did you always know you wanted to be a photographer? I was pretty young when I was certain to become an artist; I just didn’t always know what kind I’d be. I tend to like to do whatever I’m interested in, but photography has always been home for me. It’s a way for me to picture something I cannot describe or form in words.

What made you decide to start your Passenger Project? Everything started behind the Blue Mountains near Sydney, Australia. I was there with my boyfriend and two other friends in our campervans for work, but back then the job was pretty shit and we were broke. So after only one day everyone quit and we ended up leaving and making camp at a lake in the middle it nowhere. It was bloody cold and rainy during the evening so we were hiding out in the van, waiting for better times. The next day came and we were finally able to enjoy great weather under the sun. We relaxed, went fishing, drank beer, and loved every one of those moments. And then, all of the sudden, it was there. This feeling came over me and the only thing I wanted to do is to take pictures. Something! Someone! Now! I always wanted to shoot some indigenous and aboriginal-inspired portraits in a setting where I can be creative in every and any direction. I chose San-San, one of my travelling mates, to become my first model and decorated her face with lipstick. Then we did her hairstyle with wattled details and placed leather belts around her head and neck. I hung our bed quilt around her shoulders and put her next to a big and wonderful tree where I began to portrait her. After that I decided to transform all of us into completely different characters. We painted our faces, tinkered with all kinds of stuff for the costumes, hair and jewelry; we got dirty and wild. It was a wonderful feeling to do all this stuff and be creative with my friends. Why the tribal makeup? I am pretty interested in all kind of tribes: their cultures, traditions, beauty, idols and their individual styles. So I was inspired by hundreds of moods from very different native tribes and added my own ideas and some of others. Everyone got special face painting fitted to their faces with different colors and formations. We also added some strong black eye make up to underline their wonderful eyes. After all, eyes are the window to everyone’s’ soul. How do you decide what character each person will play? Every single traveler I’ve photographed inspires me by their personalities, faces and especially their eyes. I interpret and picture them in my own vision, as well as various inspirations from my helping hands. Thank you, by the way, especially to Mischa and Tom.

How did you meet the people photographed in your project? How do you decide who will be a part of the series? Everyone in my Passengers series is someone I met during my journey through Australia. When I spotted someone with special appearance, someone who looked interesting to me, I talked to them and asked for a portrait. All of them had something special that I wanted to capture. They all are travelers like me and everyone has their own story, one that's usually being written on their way. Most of them were surprised and felt weird posing for the first time in front of a camera. They warned me about looking stupid on pictures but were, at the same time, excited about what was happening. So I reminded them that I chose them because I was convinced that they are gorgeous and a perfect to my series. Can you give us any insight into your next project? I’m not really sure what I will do next. The only thing I know is that I want extraordinary costumes and a impressive setting. We will see! See more of Kristina’s work at www.kristinajaeger.com
