Jean Gritsfeldt interview by Lynzi Judish
Where are you from originally and where do you currently reside? I was living in Siberia for a long time, where I studied ballet and painting, then moved to Kiev and fell in love with this city. The city does not stimulate you and perhaps the daily rhythm is not as fast as a modern metropolis, but the city definitely has a soul. I studied at the University of Technology and Design in Kiev, one of the strongest areas for the establishment of myself as creative unit. It’s so funny, but people always thought that the main education I received was in London, looking at my collection. I realize now that it does not matter where you studied because the base is the same everywhere. Most importantly your feelings for how it should look. But after my graduation I went to Central Saint Martins for some short courses to understand how it works there. Does your location reflect in your designs? Of course the city where you live affects your thinking. The history of Ukraine is very old and is filled with many interesting facts, but now I do not work with the national colors and traditions, but rather what makes my heart beat faster. Tell us a bit about your design aesthetic. In my work, I focus on an interaction between body, clothing and new media. Therefore, my collections are not only on trend, but also have their own personality. The cut is often complex; I design my own prints and embroidery, often using a combination of unexpected textures. My brand is famous for its jewelry design, also. Where do you draw inspiration? Inspiration often comes when you are involved in the process. Also, you never know the exact moment: you may gain an insight while slathering butter on toast to put a sprat on the top or when kissing edges of your beloved’s lips. Last time I had a blast of inspiration was in Kiev Philharmonic Hall. They played Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. It is said that Tchaikovsky has encrypted the name of his beloved in the first sounds of this Concert, though his music teacher has forbidden him to love. “Only one thing can live inside you. This is either love or a genius, and if there is neither of them you gather only a huge pile of crap…”.
What type of woman would wear your designs? I create clothes for people who have a high level of freedom inside. My character is a man or woman who is tired of crying. They become tender long before drinking semi-sweet champagne, never yawns and always shines, shines and shines. If you could have any celebrity represent your brand, who would it be and why? I am sure that my jewelry and clothes could wear such stars as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katie Perry, liberis and daring girls. What’s new/different about your SS15 collection? In my ‘Hollywood is dead’ collection SS15 we are in wait for the appearance of a symbolic character - King Kong. He embodies the freedom, struggle and former Hollywood - classics and origins. The “King Kong or Ping-Pong” question emphasizes the constant change of the public taste. King Kong means old, Eternal, and good. Ping Pong is the interminable game, a change of scenery and tastes. So it’s a wearable collection. I am sure that the fashion industry is tired of making things that are not applicable to life, especially during World economic crisis. The world is changing now and we cannot remain the same. Where do you see your brand in 10 years? I understand that now in every season and every fashion week you have 10 or 12 new names. I think it’s scary. If someone is really talented, in any situation, and could be a good star and might work, that someone would have to be truly strong today. At the same time, a lot of brands that are less prepared are facing tough situations with so many new brands. I hope that that over time I build a really strong brand because I am convinced that it’s really my thing.

interview by KADIE MURPHY Something Must Break premiered in March of 2014 to Swedish audiences. Since then, it has been released to moviegoers in 39 countries and nominated for seven awards and winning six. We had a brief email correspondence with Saga Becker, the Guldbagge Award winning lead actress of the film. Saga is the first transgender woman to win the Guldbagge (the Swedish equivalent of an Oscar), and we were thrilled when we learned that we would be featuring her in this month’s issue. dress HELENA LUNDSTRÖM, earrings WOS

Jute: Do you remember your reaction when you first read the script for Something Must Break? Did you know that this role would make history for you?
Jute: How do you think American audiences would react to Something Must Break? Do you think reception of the film would be the same?
Saga: Something Must Break is based on and inspired by the Swedish novel You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the World in Place by Eli Levén. I read the book before I went on casting. I felt that something happened to me when I read the book. It’s such a strong story, and I recognized myself so much in Eli’s language and the story of Sebastian/Ellie. I felt I had to do this. It would mean something for myself but also for many other people. But I never thought it would get this big and that it would appear in over 39 countries all over the world. It’s crazy, and I’m so happy about it.
Saga: Something Must Break was in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and I think that the reception was great. People were captured by the movie. It affected them, and the audience was great. I think that the reception of the film has been similar in all countries where it’s been shown. Some love it and some hate it, but that’s the way it works with film I guess.
Jute: How do you relate to Sebastian/Ellie? Saga: I’m transgender myself and there are so many things that I recognize in Sebastian and Ellie, to feel that you don’t fit in and the entire search for an identity. A place that is big enough where you get to be who you want to be. But also to be curious, and have a sexuality and explore the world and find yourself. Jute: Do you think that Sweden is more progressive when it comes to transgender issues than the U.S.? Saga: I think that every country has its problems and that all are at different stages when it comes to different parts. Sweden has come a long way in feminism and gender equality, but I struggle every day and we have a long way to go. It’s about human rights. Equal value. We all have an equal right to exist. Transgender people get badly treated all the time, but something is happening with society. We have role models now. People who refuse to shut up. People fighting for all people’s equal value.
Jute: How has your life changed since winning the Guldbagge for Best Actress? Saga: My life has changed completely since I won. My life has been turned upside down in a good way, and I’m living my dreams. Through my story, I can inspire and be a role model. I’m the first transgender person to win an award like this in Sweden. It means so much to so many people. What I say does matter, and people listen when I talk and it feels that I can change things, especially for the LGBT society. I’ve met so many beautiful, creative and driven people, and I get to work with wonderful people and create art with them. Jute: Are you currently working on any projects we can look forward to? Saga: I will continue with acting. Both in Sweden and in other counties. It’s secret projects so far. For the moment I’m writing my first novel, and I’ve started blogging for Swedish television. I, along with Jimmy Håkansson (who took these pictures) just started BEYOU, a norm critical art collective where we want to reverse gender roles and create beautiful art together. I have also become an ambassador for Suicide Zero, a non-profit organization that works with suicide prevention. So there are a lot of things going on in my life.
jacket ALICE LÖNNBLAD, jeans BEYOND RETRO, necklace SUZYWAN JUTE MAGAZINE • 101
Jute: We are a fashion magazine, so I have to ask, what inspires your personal fashion choices? Do you have a favorite designer? Saga: I’m not obsessed with clothing brands, labels, or any special designers. I am a person who is inspired by other people. I take a bit from each person and mix it together for my own style. My big fashionistas in life are: Chloë Sevigny, Rooney Mara, Taylor Momsen, and others. I love to be inspired by people, and I love to mix and create my own style. Jute: What advice would you give to a woman in transition? Saga: Always stay true to yourself. Take no shit. Be critical. Be who you are. Live your dreams. Do what you feel is best for yourself. It’s your life. follow BEYOU at: www.facebook.com/beyoubeyoubeyou follow Jimmy at:

Rising Stylist: Annie Hertikova interview by Yinsey Wang LONDON, UK - Meeting up with Annie Hertikova for a nice tea break at the St. Pancreas Hotel was a much-needed inspirational fix for my dismal, rainy day in the City. Hertikova was dressed immaculately with eye-popping’ hues of yellow and pink, with a scrunchie hair band and rocking a natural makeup look. Although Hertikova has not yet graduated from her arts-program, she has already under her belt a string of exciting editorials and a portfolio that many seasoned professionals would see and then consequently jump at the chance to collaborate with the rising stylist. The young talent has assisted on shoots with Cara Delevinge and Jourdan Dunn, and has been published in multiple magazines, as well as assisted on various London Fashion Week shows. Tell us about your formal education in fashion and how it has led you to styling. I have always loved visual media. When I was in Year 1, I remember telling people I wanted to be a photographer. I’ve always been creative and interested in art and design so it was a natural choice when I enrolled in a BTEC course at a University for the Creative Arts (UCA). I decided that (instead of doing A Levels) to pursue this pre-university program, which would allow me to progress on to a UCA university degree. Over the two years I experimented with screen-printing, photography, fine art, photography, and fashion. I felt most comfortable with and drawn to fashion, and initially thought that I would make a career in fashion photography. Then, realizing that photography was not for me, I started my degree at UCA Epsom and slowly became more interested in styling; eventually I realized this was my passion! How was it working on set with supermodels Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn? Pretty amazing. I didn’t actually realize that Cara would be on set for one of the shoots until I got there, and she was really cool and sweet! Both of them are extremely professional and lovely. Describe your approach to preparing for shoots. I tend to be very organized. I enjoy making mood boards and finding new and unique designers. I pin them all on my Pinterest; it’s a quick and efficient way to catalogue potential ideas for a future project. I also like to get someone try looks on in advance (if possible), as well as considering whether the shoot will be in studio or on location as this will affect how the clothes will look. How did you build up your experience in styling? In my first project at UCA we had to do an editorial shoot and be the photographer/stylist/mua and from then on I knew styling was what I enjoyed doing the most. At the end of my first year I completed an internship with Story of Lola, where I got some experience styling shoots with a photographer supporting their social media campaigns. It solidified my understanding of the commercial realities of the business and gave me a taste of the job itself. I recommend that budding stylists pursue internships whilst at university, in order to build up a portfolio and find out if styling is what they really want to do because its not just about dressing up models its really hard work and there’s a lot that comes with it you don’t immediately realize.

“ I’ve always been drawn to color but I also recognize it’s important to be flexible to meet the client’s demands.” -Annie
What was the first real piece of styling that inspired you? I picked up on Karl Templer’s work in Interview Magazine while I was in Prague. It was the first least-commercialized publication that I’d ever come across before and I was inspired by the piece’s powerful narrative – it had a strong clinical theme, incorporating undertones of psychology and psychiatry, and the layering of the clothing was visually fascinating. Interview Magazine is an experimental but commercial magazine; showcasing work that was at odds with anything I had seen before. It was an eye opener in relation to what you can achieve as a stylist. If you could style anyone, who would it be? Grayson Perry. I love his alter-ego cross-dressing style! Do you see yourself developing a style in your work? I think while I was testing, I did very different things. As I develop, I find there are styles I am drawn to in my personal work, such as in my Birthday Blues series. It has a lot of playful colors but also incorporates a sad and moody feel about it. I think it does act quite representative of the type of work I love most. I’ve always been drawn to color but I also recognize it’s important to be flexible to meet the client’s demands. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I want to still be doing what I love! What shoot are you most proud of? At the moment, my sci-fi inspired shoot called Spectrum. This shoot that was initially intended to be shot at Dungeness. Despite many problems sorting out the location, the whole team worked so hard on it and the photos were proof of that, ending up even better than I had expected. It was important not to give up on my vision despite the drawbacks of the original location and other things going wrong. In the end, however, working with Photographer Saskia Lawson and Makeup Artist Lauren Phelan was a fantastic experience (as always!), and they were incredibly inspiring and dedicated to achieving my vision. see more of Annie’s work at http://www.anniehertikova.com/ follow Annie on Instagram at @anniehertikovaFollow
