Weavers from Damastweversgilde Nederland are keeping the traditional damask weaving alive. In addition to works made with the centuries-old method of handpicking the patterns row by row, the authors also present textiles woven with a computerized handloom TC2. The international travelling exhibition Shadow and Light draws attention to the art of those weavers in Europe who believe that we should not lose the know-how of ancient techniques passed down to us. The connection between the past and the future is emphasized by taking the moments captured in photos or drawings and translating them into textiles. Warp and weft threads create the pixellated images. Each pixel carries information about the warp being on top or under the weft thread, and each pixel shows the power of choice of the Weaver. Many devices have been created for mediating the will of the Weaver to the warp threads. In this exhibition, we can see how contemporary weavers still appreciate tools from the past, but have also mastered digital weaving. The exhibition is accompanied by presentations from OĂœ Kangaspuu and IIDA Craft School, demonstrating two types of handlooms that have been used in Estonia.

The name of the exhibition – FRAMES – alludes to capturing the moment; a brief glimpse of what has happened or lies ahead. The invited participants are authors from Sweden, Finland, Lithuania and Estonia who work with Jacquard looms. This technique enables to weave photo-like images and grants control over fabric structures. If everything is possible, then what kind of image do the authors choose? Matilda Dominique zooms into the fabric and enlarges structures into three-dimensional objects. Krista Leesi mixes traditional patterns into clouds, reminding us that a similar visual language can be found across various remote places on Earth. Outi Martikainen shows compassion toward children who are forced to live in refugee camps. Monika Žaltauskaitė Grašienė weaves burnt timber into the fabric to tell the story of a church fire, in which the smile of the Madonna remained intact. Annika Kiidron is balancing between design and art, with her provoking images of female nudes that find their way into menswear collections. Exhibited student projects demonstrate the logic and process of textile design. With this exhibition, we express our appreciation of the work of Vibeke Vestby (Norway) who has been developing computer looms TC1 and TC2 with Tronrud Engineering. It is with these looms that most of the exhibits have been woven. On May 11, the Estonian Textile Artist Association is organising a seminar ”The Loom Tamers” in Pärnu Museum. The authors featured in this exhibition will be there to present their ideas. We also pay our respects to the inventive loom builders from the beginning of the last century, whose creative ideas are preserved in the the works of Eva-Liisa Kriis (IIDA Craft School). We love the tools that foster the freedom of creativity! Kadi Pajupuu, curator
