From penny tourism to festival tourism SÁNDOR KÁLI MAYOR OF THE DIVERSITY OF OUR CULTURAL EVENTS MISKOLC HAS ALWAYS BEEN PROUD OF THE SIGHT THAT AVAS – THE HILL TOWERING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY ORNAMENTED WITH ITS MONUMENTS, WINE CELLARS, LOOKOUT TOWERS AND TERRACES – OFFERS TO THE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS OF THE CITY. PICTURE POSTCARDS, STAMPS, POSTERS, SOUVENIRS, AND RAILWAY DISCOUNTS HAVE ATTRACTED WELL-TO-DO HOLIDAY MAKERS AS WELL AS HIKERS IN BOOTS TO LILLAFÜRED, THE BÜKK OR TAPOLCA FROM EACH PART OF THE COUNTRY. THROUGHOUT THE DECADES A LOT OF THINGS HAVE CHANGED BUT WE HAVE UNDOUBTEDLY BECOME A FESTIVAL CITY. Dobrossy
The „Miskolc Week”, organised in the 1930s,
was a great success and even years later, the local and national press published articles on it. We are prone to talk about Miskolc as if it had never had a diverse culture, patrons and good event organisers, or as if the city and its surroundings had not been attractive. That Miskolc Week is also an example today, since the city of 60000 people had 30000 visitors, who all left with good memories. The railway company gave a discount to everyone arriving at Miskolc, advertising the one-week programme as penny tourism. „Miskolc is a nodal point of tourism, holiday-making and bathing,” a slogan goes, another recommends Miskolc as the city of churches and the Szinva as small Venice. If you think of church concerts, choir festivals, the Collegium Musicum series or the rediscovery of the Szinva, you may consider each as a historical forerunner. The 1930s went by in the spirit of the creation of Greater Miskolc, and a real big city revenue was made out of tourism, the events famous nationwide. By the middle of the century the greater city was formed, and the 1970s and the 1980s brought about another boom in cultural life. By then the name ‘festival’ had become accepted. The Miskolc Film festival really opened a new era in what was then the Rónai Cultural Centre. From 1964, for decades, in May the city changed, the film makers came to live here from the capital, had debates and the TV broadcast news from Miskolc for a week. But this also has its version today, because the significance of the Cinefest events goes beyond the borders. The young film makers’ first international festival was organised in autumn 2004, and today we can already greet Oscar Prize winning directors in Miskolc as well. Our art and music culture also draws upon the culture-supporting approach of the city council back then. Although officially the Miskolc Winter Exhibition came into being only in 1970, the series had begun in 1955, and perhaps this event has the longest history. The 20th Winter Exhibition opened
in 2009 in memory of Lajos Szalay. The number should not trick anyone, the event has assumed a regional character, that is how the jubilee exhibition is to be interpreted. Mention should be made of the Miskolc Graphics Biennale, which also started at the beginning of the 1960s, and became international a few years ago preserving its half-century-old traditions. Belonging to the festivals of the same era is the Borsodi Fonó (Spinner), which has grown into an International Folk Festival by today, featuring dancers, singers and folk artists. Emphasising that I am only mentioning examples and not a chronological order, the International Formation Dance Festival also started at that time, along with the Kaláka Folk
festival, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in the Castle of Diósgyőr in 2009. It was from the mid-80s that Sándor Benkó and his band became well-known for the residents of Miskolc, which has become a Dixieland Festival, and launched a couple of local bands as well. This era is also hallmarked by the Art and Propaganda Office, and we could read the name of Antal Flach on each programme booklet as the publisher and active director. Then after the change of the regimes, the tourism structure transformed. This is how the Hungarian Tourism Company came into being as a legal successor, with the aim of coordinating events inland, or to use an unpleasant word, marketing, as well as exporting, the offers abroad. From 2008 the registration and classification of the festivals started. Miskolc is taking a good position in the list of classified festivals. This Budapest-based company selects a slogan each year, preferring a great and important theme: we have had the years of wine, bath and medicinal tourism, and last year was hallmarked by cultural tourism. 2010 will be the year of festivals, in support of the city of Pécs, which became Europe’s cultural capital in front of Miskolc. Out of the proposal made in 2005, in which we proclaimed that culture has an important city building role, a lot of programmes have been realised, and our festivals got professional classification. The Bartók+… Opera Festival has become a renowned event series since 2001. It is not an exaggeration to mention Miskolc as a festival city, since the Diósgyőr Castle Festival, the Kaláka Folk Festival, the Dixieland Festival, the Young Film Makers’ International Festival and numerous other events have received a classification from the national professional federation. In a financial plight that cannot be called easy, Miskolc still makes a point of supporting cultural events, be it music, dance, film, art, theatre or folk art. This was probably taken into account when Miskolc was awarded the title „Hungarian City of Culture” in 2008.

The three Graces.
Inner city walk
n the Szinva Terrace the girls are waiting for us on a date. The sculpture of the three nice ladies was made by László Kutas. Many talk about them as the three Graces. Apart from being pretty and nice, they also have the rare female characteristic that they turn up on the date and wait for the partner patiently if they set out on a walk in the inner city. That is what we are going to do now as well. First, however, we give tribute to the statue of Mancs (Paws) the dog, the pride of Miskolc. He deserves it because he can pride on merits that would even bring credit to a man: he saved the lives of hundreds of people, men, women, children in Hungary and worldwide with his owner, László Lehóczki. The Spider
Rescue Team was earlier awarded with the Standard Award of the city, and also obtained an international fame. Mancs is no longer alive; his statue, Borbála Szanyi’s work, is regularly dressed into flowers by the residents of Miskolc. Once we spend so much time with the works of art ornamenting the Szinva Terrace, we have to mention the Apples too, which is the work of Gusztáv Kraitz, an artist living in Sweden but originating from Miskolc. The fruit, made of pyrogranite, cheer up the spirits of passers-by even on rainy days with their colour and shape evoking summer. From the terrace you can walk towards the High Street via the Kandia Close over the bridge ornamented by hundreds of locks. Lovers and newly weds hang them there to symbolise by this gesture that they are never going to part. Walking through the passage way, you find yourself on the corner of the theatre, the entrance to Déryné Street. The first stone-built theatre of today’s Hungary, opened in 1823, is one of the most renowned, oldest buildings. It is worth visiting the Museum of Theatrical Art and Acting and find out who played in the theatre as contemporaries of and successors to Déryné, after whom the street was named. Déryné Street await you with a lot of pleasant restaurants and pubs, but they are only as busy as in the photo on redletter holidays, for instance, when the city is blazing in festival fever. In summer the centre is full of opera lovers, in winter the visitors of the meat jelly festival, including residents of Miskolc and visitors from other cities fill the place. In certain times of the day the bustle is so big that the drink bought at the long counters may spill over, be it an excellent pálinka – say, apricot pálinka of Gönc, of Furmint or Hárslevelű wine from the Hegyalja. And it is good luck if it is only white wine, because the stain made by the ruby-colour and ruby-shine red wine is very hard to remove. It is surely not easier to get rid of the greasy stain of meat jelly either. But you must take a The commotion of Déryné Street, with the two-towered Minorite church in the background. risk as much as that, because it is beyond imagination to go home from a jelly festival without tasting everything.

It is nice to have a rest in Heros’ Square.
éryné Street converges on the recently refurbished Heroes’ Square. The square has changed a lot, but its character is still determined by some old buildings, mostly by the Minorite church, the Földes Ferec Grammar School adjoined to it, and the synagogue. The square is ornamented by Péter Szanyi sculptor’s work, which reminds us of the war heroes of Miskolc ad the heroes of the 1956 revolution and war of independence. If you are looking around in the inner city on a hot summer day, already the sight of the fountains of the square is refreshing. It is not inappropriate to wash your hands or face or put your feet into the pond. Our remote destination is the Avas. However, before setting out to climb the stairs leading to the top, let us take a detour and have a closer look at the Plank church, which is one of the most interesting church buildings of the city. If the guest we are escorting is well-informed, they will ask: Is this the church that burnt down a few years ago? The question is relevant, since the Transylvanian style wooden church fell victim to a fire, more precisely, arson. The credit for reconstructing the city’s sight from wood taken from the Transylvanian mountains according to the original plans goes to two local architects. Briefly about the past of the church. In 1698 another wooden church was standing on this site, which was rebuilt several times, and then in 1938 was finally demolished and a Transylvania style plank church was planned in its place according to the plans of Bálint Szeghalmy, municipal engineer. This is what fell victim to the fire on 4 December 1997. The church was rebuilt from public donations according to the original plans and was consecrated on 2 May 1999. On 29 October 2000 the architect Bálint Szeghalmy and his wife’s ashes, brought back from Germany, were buried near the church. The inauguration of the newly planned organ occurred at the same time, with which the church art ensemble became complete. Waving good bye to the plank church, now we can really set out to the Avas. You do not have to walk too long, it only takes 15-20 minutes to get there. En route make sure to visit the oldest and beautiful square of Miskolc, Erzsébet Square. That is where the country’s first full-figure Kossuth statue is standing. Passing through the square, stairs lead up to the most famous church of the city, the memorial Calvinist church. You can listen to wonderful concerts here, especially ever since the new organ with 25 registers was inaugurated in the autumn of 2006, which was made under the guidance of Gábor Lehotka, the world-famous organ artist. The foundations of the church were first laid in the age of the Árpád dynasty, and the church was rebuilt several times until it gained its shape today. It does not have a tower, so this function is fulfilled by the belfry next to it. The square-shaped shingle-roofed belfry is more than 430 years old. Its striking clock has been in ser-

vice since 1740, but after the ravages of time ruined it, it was provided with a new time measuring structure. The costs were paied by Dr. Lajos Győri Nagy, lawyer, and his brother, and the tower clock first chimed in 1941. The wonderfully chiming structure is part of the image of the city. For a long time it was also the signal of the local radio. The Miskolc National theatre also chose it as its signal.

churchyard monument surrounds the church. Besides, Miskolc has no fewer than 34 cemeteries. 14 are managed by the municipality, and the rest belongs to the Catholic, Calvinist, Lutheran and the Israelite denominations. Cemeteries are also called sleeping cities, signalling that the city preserves the memory of past generations. In the Avas and other cemeteries you can find the names and graves of many distinguished citizens of Miskolc. Under the expert guidance of local historians, hundreds of students worked in the summer holiday to write a lengthy, so far missing, work, the Pantheon of Miskolc. It shows the plan of the cemeteries and accurately defines the place (plot and grave number) where the famous people are resting. Some names from the residents of the „sleeping city”: Déryné found her resting place in Saint Anne’s cemetery, József Budai botanic in the Plank cemetery, József Benke actor in the Mindszenti cemetery, and József Butykai, 1848 honvéd officer in the Avas cemetery, while the imposing grave of László Palóczy is also in the Avas cemetery. The Avas has many facets. One is very cheerful: there are about 800 cellars and wine houses attached to them where the residents of Miskolc used to live their social life, where they organised merriments and tasted wines. The spots of entertainment are reviving, and numerous other privately owned cellars have also been transformed into places of The cemetery of Avas. amusement that meet all demands.

The determining building of the other facet of the building is the Calvinist church monument and the attached belfry. Past and present, piety and gaiety – all on the Avas. The hill, at the foot of which the ancient Miskolc was located, where prehistoric man, called „Father Flint” was making his tools tens of thousands of years ago. It would not be fair if we did not finish our tour at the lookout tower of Avas, because from the terrace an excellent view opens onto the city. About the lookout tower, we should remark that its forerunner was the Transylvanian style wooden tower which got a tank shot and burnt during the revolution in 1956.

From Csontváry to Kondor in the Rákóczi House FROM THE EXHIBITIONS OF THE MISKOLC GALLERY THE FIRST STOREYED HOUSE OF MISKOLC WAS THE SO-CALLED RÁKÓCZI HOUSE, THE ONE-TIME BAROQUE MANOR HOUSE WHERE THE MISKOLC GALLERY MOVED OVER TO IN 1996. IN THE EXHIBITION ROOM OF MORE THAN 450 M2, APART FROM THE RECURRING EXHIBITIONS (NATIONAL GRAPHICAL BIENNALE, WINTER EXHIBITION) AND THE THEMATIC EXHIBITION SERIES, CONTEMPORARY HUNGARIAN AND FOREIGN ARTISTS AND GROUPS OF ARTISTS PRESENT THEMSELVES. The exhibition „From Csontváry to Kondor” displays the nicest drawings of the Antal–Lusztig collection, providing a cross-section of the 300 years of graphic art in the first three months of 2010. In the Miskolc Gallery nearly 80 works are on display, demonstrating the development of the Hungarian graphic art from the beginning of the 20th century to the 60s and 70s. Csontváry’s and Gulácsy’s masterpieces, the naturalist drawings of Károly Ferenczi from the beginning of the century and the works of all significant Hungarian artists, including the graphics of Gyula Hincz and János Vajda to Béla Kondor, appear on the walls of the Rákóczi house. In spring Ádám Szentpétery, artist and art teacher from Kosice has an exhibition in the City Art Museum. Rational compositional balance and mathematical combinations are the constituent part of his works. In 2010 the Marosvásárhely-born György Csaba Borgó will be 60 years old. An exhibition will be held on the occasion of his jubilee from his statues, graphics, paintings and large-sized carpets. The abstractemblematic device system of his paintings shows similarities with Miro’s surrealist world. The exhibition entitled „Works inspiring to lead a god-fearing life” displays the masterpieces of the Hungarian church art from the Sándor Bálint collection, showing the stations of the crucifixion with the help of paintings and statues. An exhibition entitled „A new city is being built” shows the development of Miskolc as a city between 1945 and 1975. It will be held as the fourth episode of the Industrial track project in the Miskolc Gallery from April to June After World War 2, Miskolc became Northern Hungary’s new commercial and industrial centre with its population of 60000, and developed into a big industrial centre and Hungary’s second most populous city over a few years. With the intensive growth of the city, the space expanded and the limits of the city went beyond the borders fixed in earlier times. However, the special attitude of people is not determined by the objective structure of space in the first place, but by the subjective image emerging through perception, which demonstrates itself in the fact that numerous works of architecture became the symbol of expressing a political regime, and a period, in private life. „My memories form the beat era” will be one of the most exciting exhibitions of the Miskolc Gallery City Art Museum from June to September. Miskolc has

played a significant part in the history of Hungarian rock. Since the rock festival of 1973, also known as the Hungarian Woodstock, accompanied by scandals, significant festivals, rock concerts, events have taken place in Miskolc, the club life has been intense, and the first large-scale rock photo exhibition was also held here. In preparation of the foundation of the rock museum, a significant initiative in music and cultural history, a series of exhibitions and concerts will be held in the summer of 2010: the events of remembrance. The exhibition entitled „My memories of the Beat Era” constructs the youth of what is today the middle generation from the personal memories of musicians and the audience, overwriting the official history of the Kádár Era. The objects, photos, relics, record covers, film trailers, soundtracks will revive through the stories told by those remembering: musicians and fans. Thus in the rooms the main part is played by the storytellers: today’s faces appearing on TV screens, the podium talks and the occasional playing of music. The memories, however, are complemented by a museologist-historian work, so that the bygone era should be understood by young people as well. Thus, the exhibition room will be the spot of remembering on the one hand, and a large-scale scenery for the young and retro travel for fathers and sons, on the other hand. Meanwhile, rock music is played all along… The Robert Capa exhibition, held in the Ludwig Museum last year created a stir. The photo series, commemorating historical events will be on display in Miskolc in the second half of 2010. The Hungarian National Museum bought nearly 1000 photos of the most distinguished war photo reporter Capa, who, besides, was of Hungarian origin. A selection of these photos will be on display in the City Art Museum, too. A Women’s art festival will be held in the Miskolc gallery, with the topic of female modernisation. Several displays will be related to the event series – for instance, a historical exhibition on the work of significant 20th century female intellectuals and artists from Anna Lesznai to Mari Törőcsik, in cooperation with the film institution and Petőfi Literary Museum. With another material, answers to the question of similarities among the female painters of the Nagybánya School will be sought – in search of a characteristic female line with the help of their works. In the exhibition entitled
„Objective Beauty”, the Contemporary Art Institution will show what ladies look like in today’s art. The Colour – Picture – Time series will also revolve around this topic in the Museum of the History of the Theatre and Theatrical Art, through the works of several Hungarian and foreign artists, especially made for this occasion. Ancillary programs include Women’s school, talking about adult education, with an emphasis on the group formations, education, body image, preoccupations and the world view of mothers with small children. Apart from these, an exhibition is planned in the Miskolc Gallery entitled „The city architecture of Miskolc in the plan-order era”, and the Tolcsva Land Art colony of artists will be presented. Whereas in the chamber exhibitions of the Contemporary Art Institution Róbert Batykó, Tamás Buddha Kovács, Krisztina Erdei, Katharina Roters, Mathilde Mestrallet, Gyula Júliusz will appear with their works in 2010. A Lajos Szalay memorial room and research point will be opened in the Petró house in April. Miskolc celebrated the centenary of the birth of Lajos Szalay graphic artist, related to Miskolc in many ways. The memorial room will be refurbished in the Petró house, which does not only aim to show Szalay’s life but, on occasions, it will also display some of Szalay’s works stored in public and private collections, and will provide an outlook to the 20th century Hungarian drawing art as well.
Herman Ottó Museum The rich gallery of Herman Ottó Museum is open at 28 Görgey u. all year round. In the exhibition building of the museum (1 Papszer u.) Zoltán Dömötör’s private collection is presented under the title „Ages, Photos, Cameras”. Visitors interested in photography can see the exhibition all year round. In the Herman Ottó Memorial Home (in Erzsébet Alley, Lillafüred) you can visit an exhibition entitled „No honour, just obligation” on the life and work of the great scientist. The same venue also houses the Szász Endre Collection and an archaeological exhibition entitled the Bajcsa Castle.

Image Museum WHAT GYÖRGY BARNA’S IMAGE MUSEUM OFFERS TO VISITORS AS WELL AS LOCALS THAT ONLY KNOW THIS GOLDMINE FROM HEARSAY IS ENOUGH TO VIEW FOR SEVERAL DAYS. The core of the collection, which presents the costumes of the Carpathian Basin, is made up of the more than 300 outfits. Walking among them, the visitor can take a journey in time, since these embroidered, pearl-ornamented dresses are only taken out of the wardrobes of village rooms on holiday – if they are taken out at all. Just consider: the various materials are transient, even with the best caution. They do not resist time as successfully as some other objects of the Image Museum, for example the items of the section entitled „People’s Super”, showing the object culture of the 1950s. György Barna, collector, has raised a monument to the memory of one-time retailers and artisans. He
arranged small shops and workshops with contemporary tools and furniture. It is easy, especially for those belonging to the older generation, to imagine the merchant behind the counter, making out the bill in ink pencil. The „English gentlemen’s tailor”, clapping huge scissors, and the cobbler, cooper, shoemaker and other one-time masters appear in the film of our remembrance. Displayed objects also include optical tools, box-shaped photographical apparatuses, office machines and minerals and Russian bronze icons from the 18th and 19th centuries. Russian icons and crosses, cast from copper and bonze are a rare and special part of the legacy of the church art of Eastern Christianity.
The Museum of Acting is located on the plot that was once the place of Hungary’s first stone-built theatre, and summarises the history of the Theatre from the 19th century beginnings until today: beside the legendary figures of theatrical art – Baba Máthé, Pufi Fehér, the last Miskolc romantic lead, Tyutyi Ábrahám, among others – the greatest actors of the Hungarian theatrical art – from Déryné, through the Latabárs, to Iván Darvas – profess about the Miskolc secret of theatremaking. Owing to the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture, a renovated and expanded museum will welcome visitors from the spring of 2010. Temporary exhibitions will be held on downstairs, in the place of the former café, and the ticket office will moved here as well, and, as a new service, a museum shop will open, offering theatrical publications, DVDs

and souvenirs. The exhibition hall upstairs will preserve the spirit of the first permanent exhibition and admired relics, but will have an image adjusting to the new museum expectations, including interactive elements. In archive recordings, Tivadar Bilicsi, Ferenc Bessenyei, Gábor Agárdi, and others, talk about the great moments of theatrical art in Miskolc. As a novelty, the memorable groups and locations of the amateur theatrical art in Miskolc will be presented as well. Children can spend playful hours among the walls of the museum: they can be familiarised with the world of the theatre with the help of various creative activities starting from puzzles, through colouring pictures, to the making of paper theatres. Dressing up in theatrical costumes, a programme of the Museum nights much loved by both children and adults has become a permanent feature in the museum.

International Opera Festival of
2010
Miskolc BARTÓK + EUROPE
THE INTERNATIONAL OPERA FESTIVAL HAS BECOME A PUBLIC AFFAIR IN MISKOLC. EVEN THOSE THAT DO NOT BUY A TICKET TO ANY OF THE EVENTS GO DOWNTOWN TO BE PART OF THE COLOURFUL COMMOTION. EVERYWHERE MUSIC IS PLAYED, AND THE FESTIVAL ATMOSPHERE IS CREATED BY DANCERS AND SHOWMEN, VENDORS AND THE INOMISSIBLE WINE FESTIVAL. THIS IS HOW IT WILL HAPPEN IN 2010 AS WELL WHEN, BESIDE BARTÓK’S WORKS, THE PROGRAMMES WILL BE FILLED WITH THE OPERAS AND BALLETS AND OTHER GENRES BY EUROPEAN COMPOSERS. -czikora-
After 9 years we may claim that those that believed that the music-loving public of Miskolc, its theatre and historic symphony orchestra, along with the knowledge of the experts and the sponsors supporting the theatre would provide enough basis for the opera festival to strike root were right. Apart from the cultural aspects, it cannot be neglected that the annually recurring high-standard event polishes the name and the fame of the city, and attracts visitors from all corners of the country, and, more and more, from beyond the borders. In short: it contributes to promoting tourism. Schönberg’s Moses and Aaron will be presented in the Palace of Arts in January. The world premier of the musical delicacy was at the Bartók + Vienna International Opera Festival in 2009. The opera was staged under the professional guidance of Zoltán Kocsis, with the help of the National Philharmonic Orchestra. The twofold Kossuth Award winner musician has written the third act of the opera, and the premiere of the entire three-act opera will be held at the beginning of the year, accompanied with a great international interest. Not only the Schönberg inheritors are welcome to the premiere but big music publishers also have interest in the piece and have indicated their presence at the premiere.

The programme is already the prefiguration of the summer opera festival, which is ten years old – said Tamás Bátor, Managing Director of the festival, who plans to organise a festive event series, worthy of the jubilee. The aim is to maintain the high standard.
We have invited an elite Spanish dancing ensemble, an Byzantine Orthodox church music choir and an Irish soloist to the festival – a few of the programmes that are to make the event more colourful – since we would like to involve twenty seven countries of the EU in this year’s event series with the help of arts, mainly music. Even if not every country has a Verdi or a Puccini but each has cultural assets that are worth showing in Miskolc. At the 2010 festival numerous already well-established programmes will continue – such as familiarising the public with children’s operas. Last year Erzsébet Szőnyi was celebrated with staging a fairy tale opera in Miskolc, and now an opera by Sándor Szokolai will be played. In coproduction with the State Theatre of Kosice a ballet night will be held where beside Bartók’s Wooden Prince, a tale opera by a Slovak composer, Vladimir Godár, will be on repertory. Arm in arm with the Metropolitan Operetta Theatre, Puccini’s Gianni Schicci will be ready for the festival, but another comic opera, Ferenc Erkel’s Sarolta, will also be shown, which is rarely heard even in Hungary. The opera will be the joint production of the Hungarian Opera of Kolozsvár (Cluj) and the festival. With this and by presenting Erkel’s Bánk bán we would like to remember the composer on the opera festival in the Erkel year. We also wish to continue the process that we started together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in the history of the festival in Miskolc – explains the Managing Director – we present Richard Strauss’s Daphne with Andrea Rost in the lead role, who débuts here in this opera. To match her in the production, we have invited excellent Hungarian and international soloists, and the musical director of the production is Zoltán Kocsis. Bartók’s Bluebeard is an inomissible programme, and chamber operas will be in the foreground as well at the 2010 Bartók festival, which is to demonstrate the colourful musical culture of Europe’s nations.
Flute solo by Eszter Horgas. Apart from festival productions, concert nights of individual musicians are also very popular. Instead of theatre, some of these are organised in one of the churches, the synagogue or the House of Arts.
A legendary old musical instrument STRANGE FIGURE IN THE STREETS AND SQUARES Even those may be amused at the opera and castle festivals that do not view a single performance, do not buy a ticket for any concert in the inner city or Diósgyőr, but feel content walking in street and squares, admiring the strangely dressed figures on stilts that march at such occasions. You can only compare this commotion to old circus audience attracting marches. But, in fact, only because this is also a form of advertising, although some of the attractions would also stand fast by themselves.

The friendly giants walking on stilts come and go on secure feet in the swirling crowd as if the wooden limbs had grown from their bodies. Fire-eaters, pretty majorette teams, clowns compete for the attention of spectators, and not without success. Even in such a bizarre company, the folks in the streets took notice of a large clown, who played music on his unknown instrument, or, even if not entirely unknown, but a very rarely seen instrument, the street organ, which, according to an old song, has to be turned from the heart.

Tapolca’s water is a treasure IT IS UNPARALLELED IN CENTRAL EASTERN EUROPE, AND ONLY MATCHED BY A FEW SITES IN REMOTE LANDS. FOR US, THE CITIZENS OF MISKOLC, MISKOLCTAPOLCA ALSO HAS A PLACE IN OUR HEARTS BECAUSE IT IS LOCATED IN ONE OF THE HISTORICAL SITES, IN THE ONE-TIME LAND OF THE MISKÓC FAMILY OF THE BORS CLAN, AFTER WHICH OUR COUNTY WAS NAMED. LATER BENEDICTINES RESIDED HERE, AND, AS MATTHIAS BÉL RECORDED, THEY FOUND MAGICAL WATER, WHICH STILL SPOUTS FROM THE INSIDE OF THE HILL, OFFERING ENTERTAINMENT AND CURE TO VISITORS. In 1732 Matthias Bél recorded of Tapolca: „Belonging to the category of rivers, we enlist the springs and wells healthy for drinking and bathing. We examined one of these, which is situated half a mile west behind the Miskolc hill, on a small plain, which is named after its spring Tapolca. No doubt that in the old days there used to be a bath here with a building, which, however, having been demolished by the vicissitudes of times, was for a long time considered a worthless lake, used by the residents for washing… On the same spot in 1217 an abbey of the Saint Bendictine order was standing, whose church still exists in ruins. This abbey was then managed by Count ab Althan, Bishop of Vác, who, acknowledging the usefulness of the bath, ordered in the year 1723 to erect buildings over the spring suitable for bathing. Earlier there was a single lake into which the hot water flowed from the cliff by it… Its colour is clear, its odour and strength is of saltpetre, which contracts the skin, relieves fever and brings appetite. Another spring is close by, whose water is good for the eyes. Other than that, diamonds may be found in the hot water too.” Though diamonds have not been found in the water of Tapolca ever since, many generations have sought cure in it since Matthias Bél was here, and for them regained health is probably worth as much as a precious stone. To stay with the diamonds, Tapolca’s biggest treasure is still the thermal water that sprouts here, along with the Cave Spa built over it.

New swimming pool in Miskolctapolca THERE WAS NO REASON TO BOAST ABOUT THE SWIMMING AND WATER POLO LIFE OF MISKOLC IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS. THE CITY DID NOT HAVE AN INDOOR SWIMMING POOL WHERE THOSE INVOLVED IN WATER SPORTS COULD HAVE TRAINED OR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS AND COMPETITIONS COULD HAVE BEEN ORGANISED. NEITHER DID THOSE TRYING TO DO CIVILIAN SPORT OR AT LEAST SWIM REGULARLY HAVE A PLACE TO PROTECT THEIR HEALTH. We had to wait years for a new swimming pool but it was worth the wait. The „Citadel”, built in Tapolca near the Campus meets the above needs entirely. Sports leaders get an inspiration from the name of the pool, which reads on the facade: Dénes Kemény (the trainer of the Hungarian water polo
team). The facility was therefore named after a sport expert that has been making success after success and that sees the guarantee of winning the champion’s titles in a lot of work and unbroken enthusiasm. Beside competitive sport, the facility provides an opportunity for the civilian public of the city to do
sport as more and more of the local citizens wish to plunge into the water. They also count on tourism, since more and more from all over the world think that a rest should not only mean lying about having a nap or eating and drinking only, but also a bodily and mental recreation.
Factory: sport in an industrial building It was definitely a splendid idea to make an unused industrial building available for the young. This is where bikers, skateboarders and roller skaters have found a place to be, with the financial support of the municipality. Earlier they could only pursue their favourite sport in the squares and streets of the city using stairs and rails as their race track. (They have not entirely given that up until now.) It speaks for itself that the

The works of ice sculptors always get great attention.
The first jelly festival was held in 2001 and ever since the legend has revived, which is about none else than how a bowl of meat jelly, with a frog blinking in it, was served to a guest. The popularity of the festival is marked by the fact that about 150-200 thousand of people turn up at various events, including people from all corners of the world. The history of the Castle of Diósgyőr is a thousand years old „… AND THEY PITCHED CAMP BY THE HEUYOU RIVER AS FAR AS THE TISZA RIVER AND EMEUD, AND STAYED THERE FOR A MONTH. THEREUPON THE LEADER GAVE A HUGE LAND TO BUNGER, FATHER OF BORSU, STARTING FROM THE WATER OF TOPULUCEA AS FAR AS THE WATER OF SOUYOU, WHICH IS CALLED MISKOUCY, AND ALSO GAVE HIM A CASTLE, WHICH IS CALLED GEURU, AND HIS SON, BORSU, MADE THAT CASTLE, ALONG WITH HIS OWN CASTLE, WHICH IS CALLED BORSOD, INTO ONE COUNTY.”

ACCORDING TO ANONYMUS According to the Chronicle of Anonymus, the history of the Castle of Diósgyőr dates back to a lot more than a thousand years! Árpád donated Geuru, i. e., Győr, as an already existing castle to the founder of Borsod county. According to historians, people were already dwelling in the area five to six thousand years ago. It is therefore not known who the people were that recognised the defensive opportunity of what later became Castle Hill and built a castle there. According to research, its most glamorous era is linked to the reign of King Louise the Great. He dated letters from here several times – he preferred hunting here, and in certain years he spent months in Diósgyőr. The waxworks museum of the castle displays a scene which evokes this period – the king shows up in the company of his squires and knights. Apart from this, a joust and a medieval fair scene, along with the legend of György Magyar are also on show embodied by the wax figures in the casemates. Central Europe’s most populous historical waxworks museum is open all year round within the ancient walls. The north-eastern tower, which was Louise the Great’s favourite room with a fireplace, houses a scene commemorating the peace treaty of Turin in 1381. The round bastion houses an exhibition that presents the development of weapons and armoury from the 10th century Norman armoury to the Hunyadi-age shiny knight armours in faithful copies made by István Hencz, armour smith. From atop the north-western tower a view of the Bükk Mountain opens before the visitors. In the tower an exhibition shows the history of the castle, whose speciality is a fully reconstructed 15th century glazed tile stove. The cannon on the pentagonal Italian bastion is fired on significant occasions, and the summer festival season usually starts
in the castle on that note. In 2010 this will happen on the second Saturday of May, with the already traditional programme called Queens’ Spring, which is a tremendous gaiety. This programme, just as the others, always attracts many people to this picturesque scenery. STAGE IN THE CASTLE MOT The ever rising interest demands newer technological development in the castle – the organisers say. So, connected to the Diósgyőr-Lillafüred project, apart from the reconstruction of the castle, they strive to expand the castle festivals by setting up a
temporary stage in the castle mot with an auditorium suitable for seating about two thousand five hundred visitors. The mobile stage and auditorium will not only serve the events fitting into the castle’s architecture – for instance, at the time of the traditional historical castle festival, which allures with joust shows, fighting games, contemporary musical-dancing productions and gastronomic gourmet food – but also the performances of the castle theatre. Such is, for instance, the musical dancing production that ExperiDance will perform in the castle. Borsodi Fonó (‘Spinner’), a traditional folk event series is also an unomissible part of the summer season with its music, dance and handicraft show by the Márta

Fügedi Folk Art Association, ending in the Game and Wine Days on the second Saturday of September. The event predominantly based on a gastronomy competition is a pleasant entertainment for not only professional chefs but also housewives and friendly
companies grabbing the wooden spoon for fun. If you only long for some transient amusement in the Castle of Diósgyőr, participate in an interactive mini castle tour, or taste the atmosphere emanated by the century-old walls and adore the view of the Bükk.
Living history HISTORY TEACHERS CLAIM THAT THE CASTLE GAMES LEAVE A PERMANENT MARK IN THE IMAGINATION OF CHILDREN VISITING WITH THEIR PARENTS, ALLOWING THEM TO VISUALISE HOW LIFE WAS LIKE IN MEDIEVAL CASTLES. Although the Castle of Diósgyőr did not play a remarkable part in history, since it was not raged by the Turks, its walls and bastions were not exploded, it can serve as a faithful stage for swordsmen and riders that occupy it in summer. The dressed-up youth present their skills in archery and spear throwing, and even how the pretty knights courted the ladies in waiting in royal courts. The ox roasted in the castle mot and other tasty bits are great for evoking the taste of the days of yore. This is not to say that children should remember a visit to the castle as a school lesson or as a school trip. At the end of the active and nice day no one will stand in the gate of the castle to test what they have seen. All we mean to say is that under the bastion of the castle of Diósgyőr you can learn and have fun at the same time. And this does not only apply to children, but also those that wish to im-

THE GUEST OF THE YEAR MISKOLC – PROMOTION SERVICE PROVIDERS RECOMMEND EACH OTHER THE COOPERATION OWING TO WHICH SEVERAL BUSINESSES PROVIDE SERVICES TO VISITORS TO MISKOLC, WHILE RECOMMENDING OTHERS, WAS ESTABLISHED TWO YEARS AGO. WE INTERVIEWED THE HEADS OF THE BUSINESSES ABOUT THE PRACTICAL USE OF THIS COOPERATION.
Miskolc Tourism Ltd László Fridély, managing director of Miskolc Tourism Ltd, operating the Cave Spa: „The liaison of the Cave Spa with the Adventure Tour Park, Balogh-Liget Riding Club and the Károly Hotel was established two years ago. We offer a discount off our prices for those that visit from these three partners. But we do not only have a liaison with these catering and amusement establishments, but many, many more, which means that we recommend one another’s services to our guests indirectly. To be precise, we display our partners’ leaflets, publications, banners, and we show up together at exhibitions and presentations, etc. In return, our partners sell tickets to the Cave Spa at their premises, exclusively for their own guests. This does not happen the other way. We can, therefore, measure how many bathing visitors arrive from our partners, but we should not forget that the majority of tourists visiting the city or the surroundings already decided at home that they visit the Cave Spa, which is considered to be the city’s number one attraction.”
Mrs. Anikó Czink-Sztán, managing director of the Adventure Tour Park: „The cooperation works fine with the bob track, the Cave Spa, the riding club and even the Miskolc Zoo. This
means that we predominantly recommend these places to our visitors, and these partners also recommend the Adventure Tour Park to their guests.”
Balogh-Liget Riding Club Sándor Balogh, Jr.: „Our riding park, the Balogh-Liget Riding Club strives to compile a multi-faceted programme for visitors. Horse races are very popular, and we also undertake to organise friend reunions, company gatherings, and even weddings. We provide accommodations, provide horse riding instructions, and even present the life of animals indigenous to this land. According to our credo it is very important to offer a complex service to visitors wishing to have a rest or some recreation. Under a cooperation agreement, if you stay at least 3 days with us, we offer a single entry to the Adventure Tour Park, the Cave Spa, the wellness section of Károly Hotel along with a coffee or tea. While to those that come to us from our partners, we give a 10% discount off our services. The collaboration is fruitful. We regularly get visitors from our three partners that arrive to ride a horse or use another of our services.”

Szendrei Wine Cellar The Hotel Aranykorona on Miskolc-Kisavas offers three packages within the „the guest of the year” promotion. The owner, Mihály Szendrei, recommends his wine cellar: Out of the major sights of Miskolc one is the hundreds of cellars on Avas in the middle of the city. However, out of numerous big sized cellars – and it is no exaggeration – ours, the Szendrei Wine Cellar, is the biggest. The members of our family have been dealing with catering, viticulture and wine making for decades, culminating in the awards won in wine contests as well as in the traditional wine cellar and winery, which are open to visitors in our tourism service entitled „Walking Cellar”. This is the only Avas Cellar where visitors can taste wines of Tokaj from oak barrels along with highstandard catering. At tourist programmes there is an opportunity to view the cellar system, providing a unique sight in Miskolc and the surroundings, which is made more harmonic by wine and brandy tasting. The occasionally requested gypsy music or folk programme provides the atmosphere. Our guests can explore the vinoteque in the deep of the Avas Hill starting from our restaurant, while they can select the most suitable wines, and thus beyond the gastronomy pleasure they can have a great tourist experience. We can also attend to you with a novelty: the wine deposit vault of the city of Miskolc.
Based on the decision of the city assembly, in the wine deposit vault created in our cellar we are preserving 500 bottles of each wine that has won the
The Károly Hotel Mrs. Béla Határ, hotel manager of the Károly Hotel: „Our hotel is one of the biggest three-star hotels in the city and the entire region, situated 3 minutes from the M30 motorway and Tiszai Railway Station. From atop the eight-storey building the entire city and the eastern ranges of the Bükk Mountain, the valley of the Sajó River, the hills of Abaúj and the Bald Hill of Tokaj are visible. We opened in June 2003 as one of the biggest hotels in the county, and have been operating at full capacity all year round ever since. We strive to be at our guests’ service with the greatest range of services, including wellness, fitness, car rentals, as well as organising conferences, excursions and programs. During the
years of operation, a close liaison has developed with the city’s various catering, tourism and cultural institutions. Owing to that liaison this cooperation was established with some of them, offering our partners’ services, which are almost complementing each other. This allows tourists arriving in Miskolc to select from an even wider choice, and at the same time we also increase the number of our own guests by advertising and recommending others’ services.”
title „wine of the city of Miskolc”. You must know that attached to the cellar and the restaurant is a motel where the guest can have a comfortable rest.
The legends of Miskolc If I guide a visitor from afar in Lillafüred, I never fail to show the Miller’s Cliff overhanging the road. I also tell them that from the top – where now the cross stands – an unhappy young couple, torn away from each other by parental tyranny, thrust themselves to the deep. Their memory has been preserved by a beautiful Miskolc legend. Some even shed tears over the sad story, but it is difficult to take delight in the beauty of the scenery through a veil of tears. Therefore, I also tend to mention that the miraculous car was taking the happy couple in the film „Miraculous Car” on this road to Lillafüred and towards happiness. Meanwhile the evergreen song was on „In a miraculous car, along silver forests / We are soaring in the wonderful car of tales.” Piroska Csorba and Vilmos Fedor also belong to those – as the lovers of Miskolc – that evoke and tell the legends of the city with pleasure. However, they have done more than that: they collected and wrote 64 past-evoking intriguing stories, which were then published in a book on 350 pages.

The foreword of the volume was written by Péter Müller, the popular writer. I quote his words: „Nowadays, in the era of sober science, ‘realist’ art and fact-finding literature, we do not know that „it is only with the heart that one can see rightly”. Piroska Csorba and Vilmos Fedor see with their hearts. They love Miskolc. That is to say, they know it. This is what gives this book the unique experience, going well beyond its subject. We should take the same attitude to the community, the city in which we live. Curiously enough, most of us only have this experience when feeling home sick. I am from Pest but I only know what Pest means to me when I live abroad for a while. When it appears in my dreams and it appears when I am awake, when I am in alien streets among alien people, in an alien world – and I cannot be torn away from not the real city but the city in my soul.”

inspired him to write the poem entitled Ode, which is one of the most treasured pieces of Hungarian love poetry. You may want to ponder upon which nearby rock wall the poet wrote the poem’s opening lines on: „I’m sitting here on a glittering wall of rocks…” (Transl. Thomas Kabdebo). After exploring the immediate vicinity, it is nice to have an excellent lunch (the kitchen of the Palace has always been famous), while after a short break you can set out to explore the Bükk. Many guests ask where the musical name of this gorgeous landscape originates from. The origin of the name dates back to 1882 when the Palace Hotel did not exist yet, but in the area holiday homes were already standing. A government decree about naming the holiday resort Lillafüred after Countess Lilla Vay, the daughter of the Lord Lieutenant of Borsod county, was issued based on a petition of the owners. Besides, the lady spent most of her life abroad, but she allegedly took part in the opening ceremony of the Palace Hotel under disguise. It is a legendarily beautiful countryside. We recommend that you take a boat out on the lake and watch the hotel bathing in the beams of the setting sun.
Lakeside Palace LILLAFÜRED’S IMPOSING HOTEL, THE PALACE, IS LOOKING ITSELF IN THE MIRROR OF HÁMORI LAKE. ORIGINALLY IT WAS BUILT AS A GOVERNMENT RESORT HOTEL BETWEEN 1926 AND 1931. FOR A LONG TIME IT OPERATED AS THE RESORT HOTEL OF THE NATIONAL TRADE UNION FEDERATION, AND NOW IS AN IMPOSING HOTEL THAT ACCEPTS THE GUESTS OF THE BÜKK. The hotel is a starting point of tourist trails encompassing the mountain. It offers accommodation for 400 people but is also suitable for organising conferences. Staying guests predominantly praise its magnificent location and the high-standard services. The special stained glass windows of the Matthias Room depict the views of significant Hungarian cities, disannexed from the country after the Peace Treaty of Trianon. Among Hungarian films there are a few that were set in and around the Palace Hotel. Of these the

most famous one is perhaps the black and white film entitled Dream Car, the story of which is largely set in this place, and of course Zoltán Huszárik’s unforgettable Sindbad film in which the legendary actor Zoltán Latinovits is skating with his sweetheart on the ice of Lake Hámori. If you walk in the hanging garden surrounding the building, you can take delight in the view of the country’s biggest waterfall, or can lay a flower on the statue of a great Hungarian poet, Attila József. The Zoo THE MISKOLC ZOO, ALSO KNOWN AS WILDLIFE PARK, HAS BEEN OPERATING SINCE 1983 IN A SPECTACULAR FOREST ENVIRONMENT, OFFERING A LOT TO SEE. Records attest to the fact that already in 1355 there was a royal wildlife park in the Csanyik Valley. Therefore, our zoo, which has been created by a community effort, is Hungary’s oldest animal-keeping place. It is situated in a 21 hectare hornbeam and oak forest, which is directly adjacent to the Bükk National Park. Visitors get an inkling of the rich flora of the Bükk Mountains as well. Currently we present more than 700 specimens of 150 animal species, the representatives of Hungary’s fauna as well as exotic animals: lynxes, panthers, suricatas, ostriches, deer, monkeys, parrots, a bear and a tiger. In Hungary it is the only place to see kulans, rhesus monkeys, and the colobus couple is also a rarity. The domesticated animals are also popular. In the course of species conservation and the scientific dissemination of knowledge, the zoo strives to educate and entertain at the same time, ensuring that visitors could make contact with the animals. The Zoo’s motto „closer to animals, closer to nature” is reflected by the new runways without rails, the physically close space, the live animal shows and spectacular animal feedings.
Trout Farm You could hardly think of a better programme than visiting the Garadna Trout Farm on a sunny summer afternoon, sit down near the babbling brook in the shade under the trees and eat a freshly roasted Garadna trout. After that a glass of white wine is best to drink, but you should only do that if you arrive by the forest train, for instance, instead of by car. The farm was established by the Hungarian Royal Forestry Directorate in 1932, the first director being István Vásárhelyi, Herman Ottó’s colleague and close friend. The indigenous common trout is only bred here in bigger numbers within Hungary, maintaining a breeding stock similar to a gene bank. In the clear-water ponds rainbow trout and brook trout are also bred. In winter the trout farm is quiet, but at around Christmas when the weather is already cold enough, the propagation of fish begins. The catering outlet of the farm opens on 1 May, offering roast fish until September 30.
Dormouse Lodge OTTÓ HERMAN, THE GREAT SCIENTIST SPENT A SIGNIFICANT PART OF HIS LIFE IN LILLAFÜRED WHERE HE BUILT A HOME, CALLED DORMOUSE LODGE, WHICH IS A MUSEUM NOW AND IS OPEN FOR VISITORS. Visitors cross the threshold of the modest home with great respect for its owner, whom they consider a polymath, and not without foundation. If you only consider his published works, you can see how multifaceted his interest and scientific research were. Commissioned by the Scientific Society, after thorough research, he published his work on Hungary’s Spider Fauna, and later the Book of Fishery in Hungary. Probably his most famous work is entitled Birds Useful and Birds Harmful. It was he that proposed to celebrate the Day of birds and trees in Hungary. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour, and in Miskolc the museum and many schools and associations bear his name. Those setting out on a hiking tour, long for the peace and quiet of the forest, but it would be a mistake to believe that they also long for being alone. Hiking is also fun with family and friends. Although it is not proper to talk too loud or carouse in the temple of trees but it is not forbidden to talk. Indeed, if in a team that flocks together there are a couple of people of many tunes, then surely a rhythmical marching song can even cause fatigue to go away from legs. To sit by campfire, frying bacon is fun only when done in a company.

Enchanting karst region The Aggtelek National Park owes its fame primarily to the Baradla Cave. Another 300 caves are located in the area, which, along with the caves of the Slovak Karst, were registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1995. Apart from the caves, the variegated terrain and numerous plant and animal species belong to the treasured assets of the Aggtelek National Park. Kúria Education Centre at Jósvafő presents the assets and the work of the National Park. The folk and musical events of the Gömör-Torna Folk and Art Days ensure unforgettable experience to visitors seeking relaxation. A remarkable event of the summer in July is the 10th GömörTorna Festival, in which 18 settlements presents itself at folk and musical events of various genres on 11 days.
