Miskolc has been independent for a hundred years INTERVIEW WITH MAYOR SÁNDOR KÁLI day here, and she reported enjoying her stay. Ever since she returned to Budapest, she has been encouraging her relatives and friends to follow suit in exploring Miskolc. We used to be treated as a touristically uninteresting city, offering few beauties or experiences. It was, of course, never completely like that. Nonetheless, it has been pretty hard to convince opinion-makers that we are rightly called the city of culture and a town capable of high standard catering that meets European standards.
The city will commemorate a nice round jubilee in 2009, as it gained its independence a hundred years ago. What does it mean to us today? – In our old coat of arms, which „returned” in 1991, there are two years (1907 and 1909). The first is the year when the bill was proposed and passed in Parliament, which became Act LI of 1907 and „bestowed municipal rights upon the city of Miskolc with an organised council”. Therefore, starting from December 1907, Miskolc was entitled to exercise the rights of a municipal borough. Pursuant to the act, the county and the city were given a year to settle their common affairs amicably. Following that, as of January 1, 1909, independence became a reality. The second year refers to this, and this is when the royal deed of gift was issued. The royal certificate has a concluding clause written by Count Aladár Zichy, the King’s personal Minister, which is dated the 11th day of the month of Whitsun. This is the date that Miskolc chose to commemo-
rate, and thus we have been celebrating the day of the city on May 11 since 1993. What does the independence gained 100 years ago mean? First and foremost, it means that we could step forth from behind the county’s shadow, and that we have been able to make decisions on every important city development issue by ourselves ever since. For example, after the collapse of the heavy industry, we placed emphasis on education and culture. Some question the slogan „Culture builds a city”. – They ought not to. After the collapse of the heavy industry we had to find a cause that people were willing to join hands for, to help us emerge from a bad position. The Opera Festival, the Winter Festival, beautifying of the inner city, the unprecedented development of the
university, and the enlargement of the cave spa have all served this goal. The next round will embrace the Avas, Tapolca and Lillafüred, as well as the modernisation of tram transport. It seems that the efforts have had achievements sensed beyond the city’s borders. Our image has been improving. – Yes. Based on the research and the assessment of the Observer, we have gained the title of the „Hungarian city with the best image”. It’s a great to achieve such recognition. But we are just as happy to hear the city’s residents and guests from here and abroad noticing the favourable changes and expressing their satisfaction. Recently, I received a letter from a woman in Budapest. For the first time in her life she spent part of her holi-
– At such times, one recalls that despite all the efforts and favourable changes, we did not gain the title of Europe’s cultural capital. We applied for it and for a long time it seemed that our application was unbeatable. – There’s no point in feeling sorrow over our old wounds and trying to figure out how Pécs defeated us. We wish them the best of luck, and we should think up ways how we could change defeat to our advantage. The application was good for us to take inventory of our assets and realise that Miskolc ranks in no way behind other Hungarian cities. This is signalled by our title „The Hungarian City of Culture”. However, our assets may only become genuine attractions for residents and visitors if we can make good use of our potential: if a growing number of tourists pay a visit, while our young graduates and skilled workers envisage their future here. There is a developing tradition: loving couples and newlyweds hang metal locks onto the rails of the Szinva Bridge. This gesture means that they feel attached and bound here, and that they will not leave each other or the city. Walk in the multifaceted inner city
In the past few years the inner city of Miskolc has been enriched with squares, pedestrian precincts, statues and parks. These nice public spaces invite residents as well as visitors to walk, look around and have a rest. At the time of the summer Opera Festival and the winter Jelly Festival, the streets get jam-packed, all the more because folk artists and vendors selling steaks, sweets, and souvenirs set up their stands outdoors, offering their wares to all. There were some cafés in Déryné Street and the High Street earlier, but nowadays there are countless numbers of nice outdoor coffee bars and pubs. On a warm spring or summer evening it is not easy to find vacant seats at the tiny tables. Sitting over beer or coffee into the night is also good for discussing the plans for the next days, since a growing number of visitors come for more than just one event, an opera performance, for instance. The reason is that the castle, the castle games program packed with excitement, Lillafüred and MiskolcTapolca welcome visitors and all are complemented by the one thing that many value most: the wonderful natural environs of the city, the Bükk Mountains. Before tomorrow’s programs, there is enough time to walk to a cellar or restaurant on the Avas and enjoy the charming atmosphere. Part of the experience is finishing your walk from the inner city to the sound of live gypsy music.

Árpád Latabár’s travelling chest THEATRICAL RELICS IN THE ANCIENT PLOT Since 1996 the Museum of Theatrical History and Acting has been operating in the building complex that houses the country’s first Hungarian-language stonebuilt theatre. In the memorial area for deceased theatrical artists of Miskolc the permanent exhibition entitled „In Tribute to Thalia” summarises the history of acting in Miskolc from the time of touring companies up until the jubilee in 2003. The latest novelty is the trunk of Árpád Latabár. The personal relic, which travelled through half of the world, now evokes memories of the members of the dynasty within the museum walls. It contains such valuable assets as the copy of the script for the Csárdás Queen from which two Latabárs, Rezsô and Kálmán, learnt the role of Bóni. The memorabilia of distinguished artists such as Róza Déry-Széppataky, Károly Megyery, Kálmán Szerdahelyi are kept here. This space features a reconstructed copy of a covered wagon: in 1815 the Hungarian the-
atrical artists arrived in 12 such wagons from Pest to Miskolc. The first room of the upstairs exhibition area evokes the inauguration of the second stone-built theatre in 1857 and the years that followed: the relics of György Telepi, general theatrical factotum, and Gábor Egressy and Róza Laborfalvi recall the heroic era of acting. Tableaus are displayed honouring the theatrical director Lajos Palágyi and the stars of the troupe lead by Géza Sebestyén,
Image Museum György Barna’s private collection was opened as an exhibition on the premises of Lézerpont Studio in spring 2008. The photos show part of this folk costume exhibition. There are 173 complete outfits, with 176 further costumes without head piece and footwear. No exhibition in Hungary matches this collection. However, György Barna’s collection embraces a wider theme. The museum includes an exhibition of “Disappearing Small Crafts” and a collection displaying objects characteristic of the ‘50s.

and later his brother, Mihály, between 19211939 – Mária Mezei, Manyi Kis, Lili Neményi, Mária Sulyok, Tivadar Bilicsi. Half a century of the nationalised theatre is presented in the Great Hall. Such interesting details are on display as Gábor Agárdy’s plan for the modernisation of the theatre’s prompt-box or Alajos Fekete’s (actor) drawing on the theatrical work competitions in the 1950s. Out of the memorabilia of the local stars it is worth viewing the costumes by Éva Máthé or the violin of István Ábrahám. A separate display illuminates musical endeavours in Miskolc: the glamour of the world of operetta is recreated with the spectacular operetta costumes worn by one-time primadonnas – Vera Márffy, Teri Komlóssy, Anna Nádassy. Szalay year in the Gallery Miskolc Gallery has been one of the most important exhibition places and museums in the region for four decades. The highlights of the year 2009 include the returning great events: the Exhibition of Fine Artists from Miskolc, newly reorganised in November, and the Winter Exhibition, traditionally opened in December, now celebrating its 20th anniversary. From March to early summer a selection of the most beautiful drawings from the Antal–Lusztig Collection entitled „My 20th Century” can be seen. Works by Lajos Szalay (1909-1995) and his contemporaries will be exhibited concurrently.
Upon his repatriation in 1988, Lajos Szalay donated five hundred of his drawings to Hungarian museums. His art work is divided between several cities, countries and continents. He lived in Paris after 1946, then he became an important figure in Argentinean art drawing in the 1950s, and from the ‘60s he was one of the most known and employed artists of the emigration in the USA. From the start of his career in the 1930s, he was a style- and school-establishing artist of Hungarian drawing, the leading artist of the so-far little-researched third graphic generation of the Hungarian drawing art in the 20th century. With his illustrated volumes and drawings that accompany literary works (from Genesis, via Shakespeare to Kafka, and from Villon to Dostoyevsky) which evoke figures from the Creation and Greek and Roman mythology (from Moses to Abraham and Cain, from Apollo to Zeus) he created a memorable and characteristically individualistic visual form. In Szalay’s art, to express and enliven the complexity of the worlds reflected in life and literature, an independent and specific, expressively voiced, strong set of stylistic tools was established. His achievements have yet to be
fully recognised in the traditions of our drawing education (extracurricular classes, secondary and higher education). On the occasion of the Lajos Szalay centenary, three memorial exhibitions and numerous related events are being created through a cooperation of public and private organisations. January 2009 will see the opening of a retrospective display of his works from the material delivered from the USA – most of which has been unknown up to now – in Kogart in Budapest. In March 2009, the Petôfi Literary Museum will organise an exhibition entitled „Illustrations by the Szalay Generation, 1930–1956”. In April 2009 the Miskolc Gallery Municipal Arts Museum – in cooperation with the Hungarian National Gallery – will open an exhibition entitled „Lajos Szalay and his Contemporaries, 1930–1950”. The Miskolc location is included because, upon his repatriation, Szalay settled in Miskolc and the permanent exhibitions of his drawings have been housed in the Miskolc Gallery. Evoking Lajos Szalay, the organisers of the
memorial exhibitions have called on other exhibition places in the country to join the series in the name of drawing art and to deal with the situation, renewal, role and perspectives of the drawing art. A range of scientific, public education, museum pedagogy events and film shows will complete the planned exhibitions. A volume of
Lajos Szalay’s correspondence will be published, shedding light on the creation of his works and into his art workshop. In summer, the public will have a chance to visit the selection entitled „The Masterpieces of Hungarian Painting from the Kogart Collection”. The Country of King Matthias – the Glamour of the North
In 2009 Herman Ottó Museum will offer a rich selection of exhibitions to visitors interested in history and arts. In the museum’s permanent exhibition (Görgey Street 28.) every major personality of Hungarian painting in the 18th and 19th centuries is represented. An exhibition on Renaissance archaeology entitled “The Country
of King Matthias” will be on display in the building at 1 Papszer Street, from January 22 to the end of April 2009. A special feature of the show is that it will be on display in two other locations as well: in the Avas church and the Castle of Diósgyôr. The following shows will open at 1 Papszer Street: an archae-
ological and historical exhibition entitled “The invasion of the Tatars”, which will be open until August 3; visitors may take delight in the most beautiful minerals of the Carpathian Basin from March 6 to December 31, 2009; the contemporary gypsy art exhibition has received a poetic title: “The Colourful Dreams of
Remembrance”, and will be on display for two months from March 1, 2009; an Old Russian church art exhibition will open entitled “The Glamour of the North” made up of the material from the Vologda Museum. The iconostasion THE RELIC OF GREEK MERCHANTS: THE ORTHODOX CHURCH The history of Greek Catholics in Miskolc started with their settlement in the town in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. However, the Orthodox Greek merchants had erected a church in Miskolc before them. The construction work began in 1785 and was finished in 1801. The hospital borders the church on the north, and the Greek school and the vicarage lie to the south. (The renovated and refurbished one-time school now houses an exhibition of the Hungarian Orthodox Church Art Museum.) The greatest work of art in the interior of the church is the fivetier, fifteen-metre high iconostastion made up of eighty-three icons. On the northern wall of the aisle you can see the God-Mother of Ahtirka, donated by Catherine II Tsarina of Russia.

On the forehead of the city
Having raised our hats to our father Kossuth, let us walk up the Avas to breathe in historical air and hear some cheerful music, and, if we’re lucky, some organ music as well. The city’s most renowned monument, the Calvinist church, is located by the stairs uphill. Its foundations were laid in the Age of the Árpáds. The nearby belfry was built somewhat later. However, the hill of the city was not only a place of high thoughts and prayers,
Of the 34 cemeteries in Miskolc, the oldest is the one on the Avas. In the churchyard a number of Miskolc’s remarkable citizens lie at rest, and here are numerous gravestones that are worth conserving as works of art. The publication of a volume entitled „Miskolc Pantheon” is a remarkable undertaking: in it the assets of the Avas and the other cemeteries, or, the sleeping past of the city will be listed and memorialized. The book will discuss, among others, the gravestone of the politican and MP László Palóczy (1781–1861) and the tomb of the Szemere family, which, among other members of the family, holds
a sacred centre, but also that of gayety. In its countless cellars cheerful companies camped on holidays and at weekends, and their highbrow talks ended up with singing. Lajos Marjalaki Kiss’s cellar hosted Ferenc Móra and Zsigmond Móricz, among others. While in a good mood, they might have recalled the prehistoric man of the Avas, who made cleavers, tools and weapons from flint stone seven thousand years ago.

We can come across the name Sámuel Szrogh (1763–1829), a magistrate judge whose poem „Miskolcz’s assets” is often quoted even nowadays; the family grave of Lajos Marjalaki Kiss (1887–1972), the renowned local historian; and, last but not least, the crypt of the Latabárs, the resting place of the founding director of the first stone-built theatre in Miskolc, Endre Latabár. This black and white photo of the Avas lookout tower was taken at the time of its opening in 1963. In the beginning residents found it hard to accept the tower, perhaps because it was close to where the old, wooden, Transylvanian-style lookout tower had stood, which burnt down when it was shot by a tank in 1956. Today, however, the newer tower has become an organic part of the city skyline, and is now considered a monument. Its terrace offers a nice view of Miskolc, and the nearly 72-metre-high „needle” also serves the city as an antenna. At nights, it is floodlit and shines like a girl at her first ball.
Organ concerts have been organised on the Avas since 1968. The church received a new 12-register organ on June 4, 2008. The celebration was marked with a concert by Gábor Lehotka, a distinguished organist.

Miskolc International Opera Festival
BARTÓK + VIENNA While the audience still has nostalgic memories of the best performances of the Miskolc International Opera Festival 2008, which was devoted to Slavic composers, the organisers are already preparing for the programs of the next two years. We may still be able to recall the tunes of operas such as Janacek’s Jenufa, Tchaikovsky’s Onegin, Dvorak’s Rusalka, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, and Smetana’s The Bartered Bride; we may still remember the stage design, the unusual or classic productions, while the opera festival staff are already dealing with the performances of the Viennese composers. Indeed, the program of the jubilee tenth festival is currently being outlined. Although there is no decision yet if there will be enough funds to organise in the jubilee year a two-week long performance series instead of the usual 11-12 days, the main direction has been set. In the world of opera,

contracts are signed years ahead – the stars’ calendars are booked full two-three years in advance. The ninth festival is ninety percent ready, and therefore, the public may already have an inkling of the programs offered by
Bartók + Vienna. Beside the Bartók repertory, the well-known and less-well known masterpieces of Austrian composers related to the city of Vienna are planned for the summer of 2009. You can delight in pieces by

Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss and Schubert. Of Bartók’s contemporaries, some of the pieces by Berg, Schönberg and Ullman will also be presented by well-known singers and musicians of the world’s greatest opera stages and concert halls. Numerous Central and Eastern European companies have accepted invitations to the Festival – therefore, according to current plans, we will see productions by Moscow’s Big Classical Ballet Theatre, the National Theatres of Bucharest, Latvia, Prague, Pozsony (Bratislava) and Gera. Apart from the important but rarely performed pieces, which are real treats for the professional opera world, in the following festival the organisers will also favour the general public who like popular melodies, since Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni will be staged in the festival. The cultural ambassadors of our city THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, CELEBRATING ITS JUBILEE A semi-professional ensemble already existed in the city 45 years ago; however, the group that has been operating as the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra was in fact recruited in 1963 under the leadership of the founding conductor, Péter Mura – and not only to the satisfaction of the local audience. It is considered one of the best ensembles in the country, and it is also successful on the international stage. The orchestra consists of eightyfour professional musicians – all members are college or music academy graduates and highly qualified musicians. The artistic leader of the group is its conductor, László Kovács, who was awarded the prize „Worthy Artist” and the Liszt Award, as well as the BartókPásztory Award, and has been honoured by Miskolc with a Pro Urbe Prize for his work. The orchestra works as the only professional full orchestra in the region. Its activities embrace subscription performances as well as individually organised and summer concerts. The Season Subscription, the Popular Subscription and the Master Subscription series have been organised in Miskolc’s new concert hall in the House of Arts since 2007. All subscription concerts attract a capacity house, subscriptions being sold out in advance. The 35-40 adult concerts in Miskolc have an audience of nearly twenty-five thou-
sand people. The orchestra often appears in other cities of the country, as well as in the concert halls of the capital city 3-4 times a year, and has extensive international relations. Besides interpreting classical and contemporary music, they undertake such form-breaking initiatives as the Clazz concert series, where musicians appear on stage in jazz formations. The much-loved children’s program called „Let’s play music with the symphony orchestra!” popularises classical music among the youngest generation. The orchestra is a permanent participant in the Miskolc International Opera Festival. Several concerts a year are broadcast live on Hungarian Radio, and Hungarian Television makes several hours of recording with the orchestra a year. CDs of the orchestra come out every year at Hungaroton, the latest being another piece of the special Viennese series that was released in autumn 2008. The repertory of the orchestra is very rich, em-
bracing all kinds of musical styles, from Baroque music to contemporary music (symphony music, opera, operetta, musical, film tracks, symphony dance music, etc.) The most renowned Hungarian conductors and soloists are regular performers of the orchestra’s concerts. In the jubilee year, for instance, the pianist Jenõ Jandó, the violinist Vilmos Szabadi and many
foreign celebrities, among others the world-famous pianist Piotr Andreszewski, the Swedish conductor Mika Eichenholz, and the Italian conductor Marco Balderi will be performing. The speciality of the Popular Subscription is the concert performance of Puccini’s Tosca, featuring the leading soloists of the Hungarian State Opera. A novelty of the series is the guest performance of the Savaria Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. The Master Subscription has Haydn’s music in its focus, and all concerts in Miskolc will feature a Haydn piece, for instance, the London symphony and the Symphony in C Minor, the Horn Concerto in D Major and the momentous Creation will be delivered. At one of the most special concerts of the Season Subscription series two pieces by Ljadov and two by Rimsky-Korsakov will be played, lead by László Kovács. The appearance of the National Philharmonic Orchestra will also be a curiosity, in which the audience will listen to the Liszt Paraphrases by Zoltán Kocsis. Novelties in Miskolctapolca
It seems as if a good citizen of Miskolc was inspired by the Opera Festival, more exactly Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake: he bought and released two black swans to accompany the white ones on the boating lake. So these birds of the same species, yet different in colour, float and feed peacefully together to the walkers’ joy. Miskolctapolca, at any rate, welcomes visitors with many other novelties as well. BOB TRACK IN THE FOREST In the summer of 2007, Miskolctapolca obtained another attraction, while the Cave Spa received

a new neighbour that attracts a great number of visitors. At this time Miskolc’s first, and the country’s fifth, bob tracks were inaugurated near the boating lake. The
investment involved private capital and cost 200 million HUF. The bob run, suitable for winter and summer use, is 800 metres long, has a 50-metre difference in elevation, and the maximum speed of the bobs is 40 km/hour. The operation is absolutely environment friendly: there is no lubricant, and the cars are pulled up by an electric engine. The construction was done by the same German company as the four other bob tracks in Hungary. At the entrance of the Tapolca track an information board receives visitors in six languages, providing information on the required distance between bobs following each other and on how to use the bobs properly. Everyone is warned before leaving to comply with the rules

and reminded that any unjustified bravery may entail serious consequences. A run on a bob sleigh costs 300 HUF. The facility has been popular since it opened, with the number of day visitors reaching a thousand in the season. (In the photo: a bob running at full speed.) THE PARK OF ADVENTURES Miskolctapolca Adventure Park, which opened its gates on July 30, 2005, is situated among the trees of the forest near the boating lake. It is Hungary’s biggest adventure park built in a natural environment, covering 1000 square metres. Built from an investment of 10 million HUF, it boasts 25 adventure tracks at heights of 3–11 metres. The track elements are fixed using an environment-friendly bridging joist technology, thus not affecting the structure of trees. The adventure park has blue (easier) red (more difficult) and black (extreme) track systems. The tracks consist of various bridge units (Vietnamese, Timber
bridge, swinging bridge, Amazon bridge, etc.), and the level of difficulty changes with the colour of tracks. To make the experience safe, special seats, harnesses and hoists, specially designed for adventure parks, are used. To avoid any accidents, visitors are accompanied by qualified Alpine climbers and cave tour guides. Participants may take part in a sort of bodily and mental test of strength, obtaining new and unique experiences – they can experience situations that they could only see done by their favourite adventure story or film hero. The park not only offers adventure tours but other entertainment opportunities as well. The area also has a barbeque place, creating a civilised baking and cooking facility for the visitors. Recently, a traditional rick-shaped earthenware stove called Adventure Farm has been installed, in which Miskolc-style flat
cakes and pretzels are baked for children. The Miskolctapolca Adventure Park receives organised work and school groups, such as class trips, holds community sport classes, and offers opportunities for workplace-sponsored leisure activities and team-building trainings. Classes and trainings are held by qualified and experienced trainers in an accredited form, which allows training programs to be financed from an organisation’s vocational training fund. We have no information as to whether the visitors to the adventure park are also taught the rallying cry of Tarzan, alias Johnny Weissmüller. Maybe for the better, since the fearsome cry of the male gorilla would rouse Miskolctapolca’s guests from their rest, who of course, do not only
pay a visit to be entertained but also to have a rest. (In the photo: two people in foliage). WELLNESS SERVICES Tapolca’s main attraction, a genuine world hit, has always been the Cave Bath.
We have mentioned it as a „world hit”, and any visitor can testify that Central Eastern Europe definitely does not have anything matching our bath, which is carved into rock and filled with medicinal water. By the way, few guests know that they are in a historical spot of Miskolc. Miskolctapolca used to be the land and burial ground of the Miskóc family from the Bors clan, the one that the city was named after. A member of that family settled Benedictine friars there. Local archaeologists have been searching for the spot where the monastery once stood. The construction of an outdoor pool at the bath came in handy for them, because during the groundwork the ruins of the monastery wall surfaced in 2004. In the Cave Bath one can not only splash about, of course, but use a number of services, starting from the Jacuzzi, via underwater massage, solarium and sauna, to a rheumatology consultancy, and from mud treatment to hydro- and electrotherapy, which make the historic resort a real Mecca of people suffering from arthritis and bone diseases. A few years ago, only an outdoor pool called „the shell” after its shape was available for visitors; today, however, an open-air swimming-pool and lido lure bathers who favour warm water which is satisfactory for all needs. The open-air part of the complex awaits the smallest ones with a small pool, a slide, and lots of sunshine.

Miskolctapolca’s treasure continues to shine brightly, and the hotels and places of amusement do not need to long for guests in the season. Come to Miskolcapolca if you are looking for a pleasurable vacation in winter or summer. And do not forget to feed the swans, who might not dance but swim and float gracefully in the lake, searching for rewarding bites.

Hotels and sports facilities on campus
The University of Miskolc is characterised by permanent regeneration. Today, apart from future engineers, education is offered here for economists, metallurgical engineers, social scientists, art students, musicians and healthcare professionals. Apart from its teaching function proper, the university is also a
research centre and a workshop for scientific and technological research and development in Hungary. 16 tennis courts are available not only for students, but for guests as well (under heated cover in winter), there are smaller futsal pitches, a propersized grassy football pitch and athletic tracks. An indoor swim-
ming-pool is under construction. It is the firm intention of the university leadership to involve the campus in tourism; this aim was well served by the opening of the Uni-Hotel in February 2006. The modernity of this 600bed hostel is shown by the fact that the rooms not only have wellequipped mini-kitchens, but

Internet and TV access as well. The new Uni-Hotel, offering the services of a three-star hotel, improves the hotel situation of the city. A similar trend applies to the music scene and the high-standard pop-music events, which are extremely popular among the youth of the city and their guests.
We are picking up where we left off a bit earlier: the university plays a great role in the amusement of the city’s youth. The pop concerts held on campus may well attract hundreds (cheerfully head banging). Few facilities offer similar events in town, naturally not including the squares such as Heroes’ Square and Saint Stephen’s square. Charming coffee bars, cafes, pubs have opened lately in the inner city, including those on Széchenyi and Déryné streets and other places. Some of these offer dancing facilities for young people and visitors. However, very few of them are suitable for mass events. The members of the older age groups, especially the ones that long for a jolly night with perhaps some gypsy music, are best advised to walk up the Avas where a few evocative restaurants and cellars offer amusement. The majority of guests on a night out seem to belong to the younger age groups.

Diósgyôr Castle Festival 2009
You do not have to travel far from the city centre of Miskolc to reach the Castle of Diósgyõr, since it is merely eight km from the centre. It is a precious monument of the city, and its fate formed so luckily that only time ruined its walls, but enemies never. Despite this, it played an important role in our history. In 1364 King Louis the Great annexed a large tract of land to the castle, which was subsequently refurbished in Gothic style as a glamorous royal castle. Thus, beside Buda, Visegrád

and Zólyom, Diósgyõr also became a royal seat, and it gained significance especially after Louis I accepted the Polish throne. From this point on, he spent several months a year in
this castle with his entire court. The old walls saw such important historical events as the ratification of the Treaty of Turin, which put an end to the Venetian war in 1381. After the death of

King Louis, Diósgyôr became the benefice of the queens. Until 1526 it served as a county residence for six subsequent queens, who received it as an engagement present, one of whom was Beatrix, wife of King Matthias. This is why the Castle of Diósgyõr was called the castle of queens. Nowadays attractive cultural events come in quick succession. The spring-greeting event series at the castle begins with the well-known Renaissance Day in May, where a costume cavalcade, a Renaissance chamber music court, children’s activity centre, royal procession and knights’ escort welcome visitors. In June the program Children’s Borsodi Fonó (Spinnery) invites primary school students to take a day-long study tour that teaches them the history, folk art and folk traditions of Diósgyôr under special circumstances. The Borsodi Fonó (Spinnery) International Folk Festival, organised for the thirteenth time, gives an inkling of the wonderful folk dances and authentic music of the Carpathian Basin.
The Castle of Diósgyôr was once the favourite residence of King Louis the Great, and the Medieval Castle Days evoke this golden age of the 14th century. In the castle moat a spectacular tournament takes place, played by the Visegrád Knights of the Saint George Order, the Csallóköz Mounted Archers and the Diósgyôr Knights of the Golden Spur Order. An authentic atmosphere is ensured by
court musicians, clowns and jugglers, wandering knights, fair showmen and craftsmen. (In the photos: horse races and the procession of armoured knights to jousts and tilting.) A craftsmen’s show, fair, folk dance party, concerts, tasting excellent food and drinks, and performances by the Ghymes, the Kerekes Band and the Csík orchestra create an excellent atmosphere.
In July the „Golden Arrow” Archers’ Competition takes place and the ExperiDance Company entertains audiences with its dance theatre performance of Measure for Measure. The Diósgyôri Castle Theatre Nights series stages performances of Hungarian-speaking theatre companies from within and outside of Hungary. The event series lasts from May to September and is rounded off
by the gastronomy program of the Bükk Game and Wine Days, whose purpose is to keep alive the Bükk hunters’ traditions with an exhibition of vegetables and crops, tasting of excellent wines from Eger and Tokaj, as well as game cooking competitions.

SZALAY 100 – THE YEAR OF DRAWING ART 2009 April 18–June 13 On the occasion of the centenary of Lajos Szalay’s birth three memorial exhibitions and numerous related events have been created in cooperation between public and private organisations. Joining KogArt and Petôfi Literary Museum in Budapest, Miskolc Gallery Municipal Arts Museum – in cooperation with the Hungarian National Gallery – will open the exhibition entitled „Lajos Szalay and his Contemporaries, 1930–1950” in April 2009. The Miskolc location is included in the exhibition series, because upon his repatriation, Szalay settled in Miskolc and the permanent exhibitions of his drawings has been housed in the Miskolc Gallery. Simultaneously with the Szalay exhibition, the public can see the exhibition „The Hungarian Drawing Art in the 20th Century” in the AntalLusztig Collection. A range of scientific, public educational, museum pedagogy events and film shows will complete the planned exhibitions. A volume of Lajos Szalay’s correspondence will be published, shedding light on his creative work and into his art workshop.

Europe’s first-ranking formation dance groups will meet for the first time in Hungary to measure their skills in a spectacular contest. During the finals, the European champion of 2009 will be elected out of the 24 participating teams. Miskolc Meat Jelly Festival According to old recipe books, meat jelly was already among the favourite foods of Hungarians in the 18th century. However, a lot of time had to pass to form a legend about a frog that once fell into the meat jelly in a Miskolc restaurant. Well, this legend was brought to life in 2000. In the program „In Miskolc as a Guest” meat jelly became one of the specialities of Miskolc. The first Meat Jelly Ball was organised in the Palota Hotel on February 24, 2001. After over half a decade of existence, the Miskolc Meat Jelly Festival has become a festival highlight and at the same time a special attraction worthy of interest nationwide. 2009 is the year of dialogue between cultures. In this spirit, the organisers of the Miskolc Meat Jelly Festival, which has obtained more and more popularity
abroad, decided to invite a delegation from our Finnish sister city, Tampere. Obviously, the „Northern Light” project was included in the festival program in their honour, its main idea being that on February 21 the sun will not go down, that is, the city will be floodlit from
evening to morning. Mention should be made on the fact that the Hungarian festival season begins with the Meat Jelly Festival in Miskolc, and, thus, we have the festival of festivals. A Guest-Welcoming Palace Judging after its appearance, it is often believed to be a severalcentury old castle, but, in fact, the Hotel Palota was built between 1926 and 1931. The palace welcomes visitors to Miskolc and the Bükk as an imposing hotel; the tourist trails, encompassing the hills, start from here and lead here. The hotel is suitable for organising conferences and offers accommodation for 400 people. Guests commonly praise its wondrous location, the view of Lake Hámor and the forests of the Bükk. However,

guests who stay overnight, as well as people arriving to have a good lunch or dinner, are also satisfied with the catering. They appreciate the furniture in the knights’ hall, which matches the style of the knights’ age, and the coloured lead-glass windows from which well-known figures from Hungarian
history look down on us. The spirit of the location has prompted the hotel managers to occasionally familiarise guests with the masterpieces of Hungarian cuisine. Renaissance dinners are very popular: the wonderful steaks and wines are served by waiters dressed in costumes resembling
the clothes of King Matthias’ household servants. After a good dinner, we suggest you take a long walk before going to bed. The next day, head for the Bükk, which is beautiful in winter and summer alike. (In the photo on the top left: the clock tower of the Palota Hotel.)
The writing of the Ode Hotel guests and other visitors to Lillafüred may want to take a pleasant walk in the hanging garden surrounding the Palota. An excellent view opens to the environs, to the country’s biggest waterfall, which tumbles down here. Near that spot stands the statue of a great Hungarian poet, Attila József. This scenery and the experiences obtained in this place inspired him to write the poem entitled Ode, which, according to many, is one of the world’s most beautiful pieces of love poetry. „I’m sitting here on a glittering wall of rocks…” (Transl. Decades later, Lillafüred was also the setting of the unforgettable and internationally successful Hungarian movie Sindbad. It is an unforgettable scene when Zoltán Latinovits, the title hero of the film, skates with his sweetheart on the ice formed on the surface of Lake Hámor.

The trout of Garadna The Trout Farm is a tourist highlight in the environs of Lillafüred. Whoever has tasted the selection offered by the forest fish-kitchen is certain to return here. Its specialities include fish slices rolled in 12 spices and fried fresh and crispy, and trout marinated on the smoke of beech wood sawdust until it gains a golden colour, made according to a traditional secret recipe, The farm was established by the Hungarian Royal Forestry Directorate in 1932, the first director being István Vásárhelyi, Herman
Ottó’s colleague. (The great scientist was living in his home called Dormouse Lodge in Lillafüred.) The activities of the farm range from fish propagation to sale. The indigenous common trout are only bred here in bigger numbers within Hungary, maintaining a breeding stock similar to a gene bank. In the clearwater ponds, rainbow trout and brook trout are also bred. The forest fish-kitchen is open from May 1 to September 30. (It is accessible by the narrow-gauge train, too.)
Petting zoo The Miskolc Zoo opened its gates in the Csanyik Valley on August 20, 1983, and was called the Wildlife Park back then; it was in the same place and of the same size as it is today, but with considerably fewer animals. The park has changed a lot over the past 25 years, both in terms of the number of animals and variety. A lot of cages and runways have been built, and children really enjoy the animal petting area, where they
can get acquainted closely with their favourites from an arm’s length. The world’s first bust of the famous zoologist and writer Gerald Durrell was inaugurated in the statue garden (several of Durrell’s books were published in Hungarian as well, the most well-known being a humorous novel, My Family and Other Animals.) Universal narrowgauge railway Hungary’s longest forest railway meanders through the Bükk between Miskolc and Garadna – touching upon Lillafüred. In summer, the open cars offer an unforgettable view and experience on two routes covering 34 km. From spring to autumn it makes excursions more comfortable, while at the beginning of winter the small train pulling into Lillafüred serves as Santa’s
Train. From the end of November to Christmas small elves dressed in red serve in the cars, teaching songs and poems addressed to good old Santa to children travelling on the train. They will make good use of what they have learnt in Lillafüred where in the „Fairy-Tale Kingdom” Santa himself awaits them, rewarding children that can greet him with a song or a poem.

The villages and people of the Bükk The Bükk is a beautiful tourist spot that attracts visitors from home and abroad. However, it is more than that for the population of the villages near Lillafüred: it is a place to live, sometimes a place to work or at least a rich environment that provides subsistence. It is mother nature. On the forested slopes you might bump into woodcutters, charcoal-burners, lime-burners, and mushroom- or fruit-gatherers. In wintertime, road conditions can worsen greatly in the Bükk. Small settlements are difficult to approach even by jeep. It is a good idea that postal deliveries to the
villages hidden in the valleys are made by horse-driven wagons. The green car looks showy, indeed. This is how it must be, since it also transports passengers.
György Szabó is already 77 years old, but no one would believe it. He thinks his concoctions and the long forest walks keep him in such excellent condition. He is the famous and widely celebrated medicine man who makes teas out of plants he gathers himself. The believers of natural cures often knock on his door at Bükkszentkereszt.
Bánkút is situated on the highest point of the Bükk. Lovers of winter sports can find ski and sledge runs as well as a nice restaurant where one might feel like drinking some mulled wine or even a substantial lunch/dinner. The residents and workers of Bánkút can provide guests with everything but snow. However, if plenty of snow falls, it might well remain on the ground until March. On the hillside above Répáshuta, lime-burning furnaces smoke most of the year. The people with their faces and clothes covered in white lime dust are mostly residents of these villages hidden in the valley. The trade is passed on from father to son. They sometimes even let tourists happening along in on the secret of their job – whenever their work permits.
The foundation of Diósgyôr’s iron industry is connected to Henrik Fazola, a locksmith from Eger, who in 1770 established an iron-smelting furnace, a so-called „massa” in the Garadna Valley, at the bifurcation to Szentlélek – in today’s Ómassa. He also established some iron-processing workshops, or „iron-forging mills”, which demand a large mass of water, at the confluence of the Garadna and the Szinva streams, under what is today Lillafüred. In deciding upon the location, he took into consideration the wa-

ter quantity needed to ensure the hydro-energy supply of the bellows and the beating hammers of the foundries, the fuel needed for iron-smelting (charcoal) and the equally unavoidable, ever-present limestone. The iron ore was transported from the valley of the Bán stream, the mines of Uppony, Nekézseny, and Tapolczány. The furnace and the workshops operated in the Garadna Valley for a century. After the construction of the ironworks in Diósgyõr, the old foundry discontinued its operation in 1872.

Therefore, our zoo, which has been created by a community effort, is Hungary’s oldest animal-keeping place. It is situated in a 21-hectare hornbeam and oak forest, which is directly adjacent to the Bükk National Park. The area provides a sampling of the rich flora of the Bükk Mountains. Currently we present more than 700 specimens of 170 animal species, representatives of Hungary’s fauna as well as exotic animals. Animals include lynxes, panthers, suricatas, ostriches, deer, monkeys, parrots, domesticated animals, as well as Gabi the bear and Zeno the tiger, already known by their names. In Hungary it is the only place to see koulans and rhesus monkeys; the guereza couple is also a rarity. While performing a zoo’s most important tasks, including species conservation and dissemination of scientific knowledge, we strive to simultaneously educate and entertain, and we also aim to ensure that contact is made with the animals. Our objectives and the changes that occurred last year reflect our motto „closer to animals, closer to nature”: The new runways without rails, the physically close space, the live animal shows and spectacular feedings are designed to serve this goal. The forest environs of the Miskolc Zoo are a good ground to get closer to nature itself, but we also offer other programs: zoo-pedagogy classes, guided tours, animal shows and animal petting, spectacular feeding, zoo birthdays and riding.
