Free Nara Bus Excursions! In another way to enjoy Nara this autumn, a free Nara Excursion Bus Service is running from the new NARA Visitor Center & Inn to two different destinations in Nara prefecture throughout the month of October. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and weekends, the free bus runs to and from the village of Asuka or the town of Yoshino, south of Nara City. Asuka was the first permanent capital of Japan from about 538 until the transfer of the capital to Heijokyo in Nara in 710. Choose to visit Asuka and you’ll have six hours to explore sites such as the Ishibutai (Japan’s equivalent of an Egyptian tomb), the 1300 and 1400-year-old Buddha statues of Oka-dera and Asukadera temples, the fertility stones of Niimasu Shrine, and terraced rice paddies of Oku-Asuka. Bike rental and 50cc scooter rental (for anyone with an International Driver’s Permit or Japanese Driver’s License) is also available for getting around once you get off the bus. Choose to visit the mountains of Yoshino, and you’ll get the chance to explore Kinpusenji Temple, the largest temple in Yoshino, the second largest wooden structure in Japan. Kinpusenji is the headquarters of the Shugendo faith – Shugendo is a Buddhist practice of achieving enlightenment through the hardships of living and walking in the mountains for long periods of time. Further up the mountain at Sakuramotobo Temple, you can take part in a Shugendo suigyo purification by water ritual. There are many other activities available, such as observing the making of kudzu starch sweets and persimmon-leaf preserved sushi, and of course, trying these delectable treats for yourself. A. People who are on prescribed medication can bring their medicines from abroad for their own use, but need to go through certain procedures in some cases. In general, up to one month’s supply of a person’s own prescribed medication can be brought into Japan without following any special procedures, except for controlled substances such as narcotics and psychotropic medicines. In order to bring a longer supply or those controlled medicines to Japan, a verification form called yakkan shoumei is required. It can be obtained by submitting the necessary information to a pharmaceutical inspector in the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Prohibited substances in Japan such marijuana are not allowed regardless of whether a person wants to use it for medical purposes. No Business Like Japanese Show Business U.S. singer-songwriter Natalie Emmons, now the face of Trivago Japan, shares her adventures while navigating the J-entertainment world. Text: Celia Polkinghorne • Images: Jason Haidar

 If you live in Japan and spend enough time on YouTube, you may have noticed a charismatic, blonde American girl with an impeccable Japanese accent advertising the latest and greatest for travel company Trivago. That girl is singer-songwriter Natalie Emmons, and yes, it is her voice! Hailing from San Diego, California, Natalie has taken a road less travelled to living and working in Japan. A far cry from the life of any English teacher, bar owner, or businessperson, she began a three-year stint in Osaka upon graduating from Theater Arts at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles, after landing her first gig in the country as a dancer and singer at Universal Studios Japan. “There was something called The Universal Rainbow Circus and it was on this giant stage called the Globe Stage … they made it into a sphere-shaped circus tent. They hired a bunch of American circus performers, and there were about 40 dancers. It was a huge production ... I was the MC, so speaking in Japanese and then singing, and that was just an awesome show.” Before long she was dressed up in purple and pink, hosting USJ’s Hello Kitty show, winning the hearts and smiles of throngs of young Japanese girls. She went from the stage to the small screen at the end of 2012 on finishing her contract with USJ, after winning a spot as a contestant on the national television show Nodojiman THE World!. Nodojiman means “proud of my voice,” and the show features amateur singers from countries all over the world singing songs in Japanese. “It was a pretty funny experience. They’ve got people from all different countries so they’re trying to, I don’t want to say stereotype you, but you know, make you more American than you are in a way.

“Living here (in Japan) I felt like I found my voice … I felt like I came back to the States so much more confident. I felt braver and more excited to just be myself.” “So they said, ‘We don’t really want you to speak Japanese,’ and ‘Could you wear cowboy boots?’ I don’t even own cowboy boots! They said, ‘We can pay for them,’ and so they took me shopping and I was just thinking ‘Oh my gosh, these are Japanese-made cowboy boots that I’m wearing right now,’ and I had some sort of western off-theshoulder thing, and cutoffs!” Natalie made three appearances on Nodojiman THE World!, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Nakai Masahiro from SMAP, who was the show’s host. “When I got there it was like one of those Japanese game shows – all the bright lights and like ‘NA-TA-RI EMMON-ZUUU!!!’ and a huge American flag behind me. “A lot of celebrities were there sitting on this little celebrity couch to watch it. And then there were of course the judges who are producers and songwriters ... And the audience, which was just a bunch of beautiful people that they hired,” she laughed. Natalie returned to the United States in 2013 a more confident performer than ever after her showbiz experience in Japan. She subsequently recorded and released Therapy, an EP of original songs in English and Japanese. She credits her time in Japan and at USJ for helping her develop her unique skill sets, bridging between Japanese and Western culture, and developing her own identity as a performer. “Living here (in Japan) I felt like I found my voice … I felt like I came back to the States so much more confident. I felt braver and more excited to just be myself.” Her single Call of the Wild was released on February 24 this year as a free download, and she is currently working on her debut fulllength album.

Lately, she has been turning heads on TV and online as the face of Trivago Japan, and has found herself flying between the U.S., Japan, and Europe for work. The springboard for the European chapter was her job offer at Trivago, an opportunity that came about as a result of her connections at Universal Studios. The creative director assigned to the Trivago commercials, a British guy who once lived in Japan as an English teacher, wanted to localize the company’s commercials. “Instead of doing the same commercial and just dubbing it over, they’re actually hiring people from respective countries,” Natalie explained. “They thought it would be really cool to use a foreigner who speaks Japanese well. “So it was really exciting, and they knew it was kind of a risk because they didn’t know how it would be accepted by a Japanese audience … no one had done it, so it was cool to be a part of it. I didn’t think that something like that would be possible in Japan without having some sort of assurance that it would succeed.” Before she knew it, she was bouncing between Berlin and Barcelona shooting Trivago commercials, and caught up at times in an amusing whirlwind of cultural differences and mixed messages. “With the one (commercial) that’s available to see now, the way that I walk was a huge issue! First they wanted me to kind of walk sexy, and then the Japanese girls, they didn’t like it at all! So it was just back and forth between, ‘No, she needs to look more confident, she looks too shy,’ and they (the Japanese staff) were saying, ‘No, this is how we want her to look, she looks proper and polite that’s what we see,’ and so I’m just standing there and

I’m like, ‘All right, just let me know when you decide,’” she laughed. But despite the very flexible, gowith-the flow approach she is able to have to her work, Natalie has her principles, and makes a concerted effort to have a certain amount of control over the direction of her career. According to her, the two main challenges of working inside the J-entertainment machine are keeping control of what you want to do, and the fact that people are often hesitant to do something new. “I get the feeling a lot, like Japanese people are impressed by what I’ve been able to do on my own. However, there was a lot of encouragement, at least at the beginning, to do nothing – to let everyone else handle it for me. And it really scared me a lot because they kept saying, ‘We’re gonna take care of it for you. Please don’t promote, please don’t post anything. Don’t do this, don’t do that,’” she explained. “I had to decide, you know, do I want to trust these people who may or may not come through for me ... I basically just decided to do it my own way, and maybe that’s the American in me, you know, but I just didn’t trust it.” Whether she remains self-managed, or eventually signs with a label, there’s no doubt Japan will be seeing more of this vivacious blonde bombshell. She has more commercials in the works, and this month, a newly released J-pop ballad Arrival Gate, (Touchaku Kuchi). When she’s not in Japan, she can be found on stages and TV screens around California. Natalie was recently nominated for the San Diego Music Awards for best singer-songwriter, to be announced early this month. 日本にしばらく住んでいる人ら、YouTube の映像でおなじみかもしれない。旅行会社「トリバゴ」のコマーシャルで、非の打ち所のない日本語を披露して存在感を放っている金髪のアメリカ人女性。この人こそ、シンガーソングライターのナタリー・エモンズである。聞こえているのは、もちろん吹き替えなしの彼女の声だ。カリフォルニア州サンディエゴ出身のナタリーは、風変わりなルートで日本にやってきた。英語教師でも、バーのオーナーでも、ビジネスパーソンでもない。ロスアンゼルスのアズサパシフィック大学の演劇芸術学部

ョーを司会進行するようにもなった。日本人少女たちが大喜びのアトラクションである。 USJの契約を満了した2012年末、ナタリーはステージからテレビへと活躍の場を移す。きっかけとなったのは、世界各国のアマチュア歌手が日本語の歌でパフォーマンスを競う番組「のどじまんTHEワールド」だ。ナタリーは世界中からやってきた外国人たちと一緒に出演することになった。「おもしろい経験でした。ステレオタイプじゃないけど、世界のいろんな国の人がいるので、スタッフは私のことを実際以上にアメリカ人らしくしようと頑張っていました。『

あまり日本語を話さないでください』とか『カウボーイブーツを履いてもらえますか？』とか。『カウボーイブーツなんて持ってませんよ！』と答えると『ブーツ代はお支払いしますんで』みたいな。それでお店に連れて行かれて『あーこれ日本製のカウボーイブーツだわ』とか思いながら、気づいたらウエスタンっぽい肩出しの服を着て、デニム地のショートパンツを履いて歌ってました！」ナタリーはこの「のどじまんTHEワールド」に3回出演して、番組の司会だった SMAPの中居正広らとも交流を持つようになる。「スタジオは、まるで日本のゲームショーみたいな場所。ライトがキラキラ光って、『ナタリー～エモ～ンズ！』みたいな紹介で、巨大なアメリカ国旗が私の後ろにあって。たくさんの有名人が小さな長椅子に腰掛けて、別席にはプロデューサーや作曲家たちが審査員として並んでいて……観客はテレビ局に雇われた容姿のいい人たちでした」ナタリーは当時を思い出して笑う。日本でショウビズの舞台を踏んだナタリーは、パフォーマーとしての自信をつけて 2013年にアメリカへ帰国。続いて英語と日本語で歌ったオリジナル曲「セラピー」を録音した。日本とUSJで培ったユニークなスキルセットを活かし、日本と西欧の文化の橋渡し役となりながら、パーフォーマーとして自立したのである。「ここ日本で、自分の声を発見しました。自信をつけてアメリカに帰れたという実感はあります。自分自身を表現することが、本当に楽しいと感じるようになりました」今年2月24日にはシングル「Call of the Wild」を無料ダウンロードでリリースし、現在はデビュー作となるフルアルバムの制作に取り組んでいる。近頃、ナタリーはトリバゴ・ジャパンのイメージキャラクターとして米国、日本、ヨーロッパを飛び回っている。ヨーロッパでの撮影

はトリバゴからの提案によるもので、ユニバーサル・スタジオとの関連から生まれたチャンスだった。トリバゴのコマーシャルを担当したクリエイティブ・ディレクターは、かつて英語教師をしながら日本に住んだことがあるというイギリス人男性。トリバゴのコマーシャルを完全にローカライズしようというのは彼のアイデアだった。ナタリーは説明する。「同じコマーシャル映像に現地語をオーバーダブするのではなく、それぞれ現地国で人を雇うことになったんです。日本語が上手な外国人を起用するのが、すごくクールなことだと思ったみたい。コマーシャル制作は楽しかったけど、日本の人たちにどう受け取られるかは未知数。前例がないことに参加できるのは素敵だと思いました。成功の保証がないことを、日本で実際にできるとは思ってもみませんでしたから」ナタリーはトリバゴのコマーシャル撮影のためにベルリンとバルセロナを行き来しながら、日本と西欧の文化や価値観の違いを目の当たりにしたという。当時のエピソードを笑いながら回想する。「いま公開されているコマーシャルで、私の歩き方が大問題になったんです。最初はセクシーに歩くように言われ、次は日本の女の子みたいに歩けと言われました。でもこれを制作側が気に入らず、堂々巡りになっちゃって。『そんなか弱そうな歩き方はダメだ。もっと自信たっぷりに見えなくちゃ』と一方が言えば、日本のスタッフが『いや、こっちのほうが上品で礼儀正しい』と対立したんです。私は『わかったよ、どっちにするか決まったら教えてね』みたいな感じで」流れを乱さず柔軟な仕事できるナタリーだが、キャリアの方向性については自分で責任を持つことを原則としている。いわく、日本のエンタメ業界には大きな問題が2つある。ひとつは自分がやりたいことを抑えつけられること。もうひとつは新しいこと

に対してみんなが尻込みしてしまうという現実だ。「日本のみなさんが『一人でよくそこまでできるね』と感心してくれるのは嬉しい。でも少なくとも最初の頃は、『余計なことをするな』というプレッシャーがたくさんありました。自分の仕事を、他人にコントロールされるのが本当に怖かった。『それはこっちの仕事なので、自分で売り込まないでください。ネットには情報を一切上げないでください。あれもダメ、これもダメ』みたいな感じで」自分自身をマネージメントしようと決断した経緯を、ナタリーは説明する。「だから私は、決断する必要がありました。本当に私のことを考えているのかわからない人たちを信用したいのか、自分の心に聞きました。それで基本的には、自分のやり方を通すことに決めたんです。たぶん私の中のアメリカ人的な気質がそうさせたのかも。だれかに丸投げして安心することなんかできませんから」このままセルフマネージメントを続けるのか、最終的にどこかのレーベルと契約するのかはまだわからない。それでもナタリー・エモンズの姿が日本でもさらに頻繁に見られるようになるのは間違いない。コマーシャルの仕事は増えており、Jポップバラードの新曲「到着口」を昨月リリースしたばかりだ。日本にいなときは、カリフォルニア周辺のステージやテレビに出演しているナタリー。最近、サンディエゴ・ミュージック・アワードで最優秀シンガーソングライターにノミネートされた。その結果は今月上旬に発表される。ナタリー・エモンズさんの近況は、ウェブサイト（natalieemmons.com）または YouTubeチャンネル（youtube.com/ user/MsNatEmmons）でご覧ください。

 I am curled up on the floor as instructed, feeling my partner’s hands against my back and allowing my body to be rolled along the ground. She reminds me to try to see my body as an object, yet the more I try to think about relaxing it, the more tense I become. My shoulder hits the ground with a thud and I curse my form for its clunky movement. We switch roles and I put my hands on the back of my partner. Unlike my rigid body, which clunks along the ground like a jagged rock, hers moves fluidly and I am surprised at the ease with which it responds to the direction I guide it with my hands. I am in Kyoto at a Butoh workshop run by Ima Tenko, a Japanese dancer who holds Butoh classes twice a week near Kuujo Station. Ima has been performing Butoh since 1979, and since 2007 has been running her workshop. Butoh is a form of physical expression that was started by Kazuo Ohno and Hijikata Tatsumi in 1959. It is avant-garde dance and Japan’s brand of postmodern dance. It is a form that both follows and breaks the rules, and has been described as a dance form that ‘defies definition.’ Kyoto university student Caitlin Coker, in her second year of her doctorate program researching Butoh, says “Butoh is a rebellion against modern dance.” “With Butoh, they studied modern dance and jazz dance and broke away from it and created their own movement. In Butoh there’s breaking the rules of modern dance and breaking the rules of what you can do in dance. “In modern dance, you want to show the body as a generally accepted form of beauty, think of ballerinas ... but in Butoh there’s a kind of grotesqueness, yet Butoh shows the grotesqueness as something beautiful. It takes an anti-social person, but shows that as humanity. There’s also generally a chaotic, wild feeling,” she explained. The room we’re in is an old building with a large, cracked mirror in the far right-hand corner. It is older and more run down than what might first come to mind when thinking ‘dance

studio in Japan,’ but that gives it a rustic charm. “Imagine your body is like a liquid form,” Ima guides us, “Imagine you’re like a bucket of water that’s spilt,” she says and demonstrates by hurling her torso towards the ground and flailing her arms. I try to imitate her free movements but there’s a selfconsciousness to my effort. This is not something that comes easily to a first-time dancer. “It is important not to think when performing the exercises,” says Ima. Easier said than done. Seeing Ima’s ease of movement and the way she could relax her body made me realize how detached I am from my own. The next activity involves walking from one side of the room to the other, using consciously slow steps. Again we work in pairs, and Ima reminds us that it’s important not to rush these movements. My partner holds onto my hips and pulls me back as I move slowly towards the other side of the room. I pick up one foot very carefully, hold it in the air for the moment, and then stretch my leg out towards the ground before doing the same with the opposite foot. After walking back and forth across the room several times we stop the activity. I look at the clock and realize over two hours have passed since the start of the workshop. In the past two hours I had gained an understanding of Ima’s motivation for starting the workshop. She says she feels as though Butoh is more important now than ever before, because with smartphones, computers, and other technology, people have become so disconnected from their bodies in modern society. Although it is sad that the Butoh scene is not thriving in the way it was in the 70s and 80s, the passion that I saw in the performers who continue the dance form is an inspiration to continue doing the things you find value in, regardless of how popular those things are. We live in a time where the amount of ‘likes’ we get on social media is our validation for the things we do or create, but in researching Butoh I was reminded there are

other more important things than having a high view count. Ima’s workshop is a great place to get a first-hand experience of Butoh, yet Kyoto has places to experience Butoh as a spectator as well. Urban Guild – a cafe on Kawaramachi street – has occasional Butoh performances as well as a range of other avant-garde events. There is also a place named Nishijin Factory Garden on Kamidachiuridori which has a traditional look and also holds showcases for creative talent including Butoh performances. The events take place sporadically but there is usually an event somewhere in Kyoto once a month. 

Hidden Gems of Ura-Namba Looking for an epicurean adventure? Snake your way through the mazy alleyways of the mysterious Ura-Namba to reach culinary enlightenment. Text & Images: Sam Evans

 Ura-Namba, literally meaning “back” or “secret” Namba, is a corner of Osaka’s Minami district that until recently has remained shrouded in mystery. Now the neighborhood is gaining notoriety through its cornucopia of bars and eateries...it’s just a matter of knowing where to go. Seemingly a far cry from its modern, offbeat manifestation, Ura-Namba was once synonymous with the furniture industry. Visit during the day and you’ll still see oji-sans tending to their chairs and cabinets, wiping assiduously in the few boxy shops that remain as they fill the air with the scent of oak and wood polish. The area also has a proud history of performing arts, being home at one time or another to not only the Namba Grand Kagetsu theater (today the most prestigious purveyor of Osaka’s manzai comedy), but also the Kadoza; once the bastion of entertainment giants Shochiku (one of Japan’s leading film and theater companies), and the old Kabuki-za (kabuki theater) just a nod across the Midosuji. This mix of artisans and artists caused something special to happen here, for today an atmosphere persists that is as rawly bohemian as anywhere in Kansai. On top of that, the bars that have always dotted the narrow passages have multiplied in recent years as the older generation gave way to a new, audacious group of youngsters eager to

gentrify the neighbourhood into an epicurean paradise. And they succeeded, because a jaunt into Ura-Namba these days means a walk on the wild side, deep into a morass that tantalises not only the tastebuds but the receptors of all the other senses as well. In order to get the best out of this mystical quarter it’s best to attack from the north, entering the dingy Doguyasuji shotengai just south of the Namba Grand Kagetsu. Whatever time of day or night, this shopping street is invariably as empty as your anticipant belly should be, but don’t be deterred as making the first right will take you into the bustle. On this alley can be found various izakaya, the brimming yakitori establishment Sumiyakishaten, and Q Japanese Saloon; a down-toearth bar with a local feel offering all your favorite refreshments at reasonable prices. “The special thing here is that everybody is friendly and easy to talk to. There are fantastic places to eat and drink and if talking to different kinds of people makes you happy then this is the place for you,” says Ura-Namba frequenter Masahiro Sakai. Turning left at this point will land you on the epicentral backstreet named Sennichijizosondori after the miniature, pinewood shrine nestled unassumingly down in the middle and curiously adding a kernel of steadiness to this otherwise hotbed of hedonism.

The first stop is undoubtedly DandeLion; a gem of a standing bar with

the air of an Old West saloon, stocking whiskeys and bourbons of all kinds as well as wine, all over dark oak and under gloomy, amber lighting that makes life inside seem like an old sepia photograph. There’s an undoubtable nostalgia, and one can almost hear the reverberations of a discordant honkey tonk somewhere in the background. This just adds to the allure. Proprietor Kimiko Sakagami has been presiding here for six years and indubitably enjoys the common sight of her customers spilling over onto the street. Yes, it’s as popular as it is tiny so if you intend on knocking a few back here jam in early and with an empty bladder. Meandering further down Sennichijizosondori will take you past a myriad of eateries, namely V’tres Plus; a cute cafe with a citrusy mediterranean zest, Enya; a modern yakitori place emitting irresistible wafts of charred chicken skin, and Shrimp Shrimp Namba Ebi Bar; which specialises in...well...shrimp. Italian Dining Pesca and Hillman Chinese restaurant provide for the slightly more upmarket choice, and each to their own for from within your sweet reverie, lulled by the divine scents, buzz of excited chatter and lights of all colors festooned enchantedly from building to building, you’ll realize that Ura Namba holds something for just about everybody.

you’ll miss the entrance, so keep your eyes peeled for the skinny opening directly opposite the shrine. Enter into the cramped corridor with thin woodboard walls on all sides under bright lights that give this place an unmistakably beatnik feel, almost as if it were thrown together on a whim by a gang of hungry drunks. However, if the corridor doesn’t inspire grandeur, the bars and restaurants within these walls, 12 to be exact, certainly will. Bar Yuu, to the right of the entrance specializes in amazake, a traditional Japanese tipple. The kindly owner Kenji Ujita’s trademark is to season with koji, a main ingredient of Japanese sake, to give his dishes a unique taste. At ¥600 for his daily selected vegetables and meat platter it’s good value too. Dishes are served with a smile and a sprinkling of knowledge on the history of the place. “This building used to be one big cooking utensil store. Four years ago it was gutted and made into what you see now,” Kenji explained. “The building has no name, we call it simply by its address when needed. The neighborhood is becoming more and more popular and no wonder, it’s a great place to come and socialize.” Wander further into this maze of wood and wafts of delectable cuisines and you’ll find Toriumon; a kick-ass nabe restaurant tucked away in a corner. snaking metallic vents that droop from the ceiling. As well as their celebrated chillitorinabe they offer hormonyaki and motsunabe to die for, all big enough to share and priced at around ¥1,500. Kochan reveals that they use only their own, original sauces and buy the whole cow, an aspect which enables them to use rare parts in their cooking seldom chewed on elsewhere. Next door is the most bohemian of all the establishments that line these alleys, Bar FUu2. Owned by Toshiyuki Izumi and his wife Shi, this bar is a side project that compliments Toshiyuki’s daytime pursuit as an acclaimed tattoo artist at his studio TTAS Design. Run with the help of bar tender Chii, the bar itself is a house of spook with neon lamps illumining skeletons and other chilling trinkets. “Anybody can come here and experience a different side of Japanese culture. It’s a great place to come and have fun and somewhere foreigners will find exciting,” said Toshiyuki. The specialty here is the daiquiri, which is as delicious as it is gargantuan and, for the size, a good deal at ¥1,200. Readjust your eyes to the night and continue down Sennichijizosondori past yet more bars and Chimudon, a busy Okinawan izakaya that serves Asahi Superdry for only ¥100! Stumble a little further south and find yourself at the end of it all, coming to Nansandori and returning to reality. 

Exploding onto the scene (excuse the pun) in July of this year, TNT Craft Beer pub and bottle shop offers five ever-changing taps of top-notch American craft beer. “We always try to keep one IPA, one wheat beer, and one stout at all times. We also like to do crazy beers – we had a jalapeno beer once and it was amazing,” said Jesse Theriot who runs TNT along with his business partner Chris Rawls. If you’re checking it out for the first time and are not sure what to order, try their taster set and get a sample of everything on tap for ¥1,200. What helps set this place apart, besides the great rock music and DIY wood paneling, is the two large refrigerators full of more than 100 different kinds of craft beers, including many hard-to-find rarities such as the world-class Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing Company.

Lingua is the Latin word for “tongue” and the tongue connects everything – talking, tasting, all the good stuff. So get inspired to eat, drink, and be merry at Lingua World Cafe, your one-stop shop for treating your taste buds to good food, good coffee, and of course, great beer. A large, open space with friendly, international staff, this smoke-free, kid-friendly, artistic and laid-back spot has a great community feel to it. Owners Ian and Ulala Warney are an artsy pair, featuring a different artist’s work every two weeks, which adds to the relaxed, creative vibe that is perfect for enjoying one of their delicious-looking gourmet sandwiches and a pint of craft beer. The husband-wife team of Matthew and Toshie Boucher create a Cheersesq (the TV show) atmosphere. Greeting customers by name, they’re quick to come around and welcome new faces with cold pints of some of the best American brews at fantastic prices as far as craft beer goes. “We specialize in Oregon beers, we’ve introduced about 25 different breweries to Japan from Oregon and the U.S. including Breakside, Lompoc, and Prairie Artisan Ales,” Matthew explained. Imazato also boasts an excellent array of over 70 different rare bottled beers, such as Prairie Artisan Ales Bomb, sure to peak any beer enthusiast’s curiosity. “If I see a good beer and can get it for people I will,” said Matthew. Hoka hoka no pan! – “The bread is fresh from the oven!” The phrase hoka hoka (ホカホカ) is just one of many examples found in Japanese of the use of onomatopoeia, or words that phonetically imitate or resemble actions, feelings, or natural sounds (e.g. Crack! Dokan!; Whoosh! Hyu!; Woof! Wan!; Meow! Nyan!). From comic books and advertisements to everyday conversation, onomatopoeic expressions are found everywhere in Japanese daily life, describing moods, the weather, the seasons, animal sounds, and even foods and actions related to eating. Hoka hoka emphasizes that something is warm, in a comfortable way. For example, hoka hoka no gohan (ホカホカのごはん) is rice served hot and steamy, straight out of the rice cooker. But it can also describe non-food items; wrapping yourself in a comfy blanket, hoka hoka no futon (ホカホカのふとん), provides a warm and cozy feeling.

Fall is a wonderful season to treat your palate and extend your Japanese food lingo. Get out and try one of our favorite seasonal treats, yakiimo (やきいも), baked sweet potatoes. They’re often sold in street stalls and at festivals. Fresh from the oven, with a light and soft texture, this is the epitome of hoku hoku (ホクホク). This term is also used to describe the softness of other starchy vegetables like taro (satoimo, さといも), and pumpkin (kabocha, (かぼちゃ), when steamed or baked. When indulging in a big mouthful of delicious food, both musha musha (ムシャムシャ) and paku paku (パクパク) are appropriate expressions for this guilty pleasure. These illustrate cramming food into one’s mouth and munching loudly! Try some of the following onomatopoeia with your friends as you enjoy a season of delicious fall foods!

Biting into the juicy flesh of an Asian pear, “shaki shaki” describes its fresh and crunchy texture. Lettuce, cabbage and other fibrous vegetables share these characteristics, which are the typical ingredients of a fresh salad.

シャリシャリ

“Shari shari” is similar to “shaki shaki” and is another expression used to describe foods with a crunchy texture. It’s also perfect for imitating the slushy sound made when stirring shaved ice, or kakigōri (かき氷).

juushi

ジューシー

“Juushi” comes from the English word “juicy” and is one to use when you bite into a delicious, ripe peach or persimmon and have fruit juice running down your forearms!

saku saku

サクサク

“Saku saku” describes crispy foods like deep-fried chicken, tempura, pizza crust, toast, and cookies.

bari bari

バリバリ

Be sure not to make this sound on the train! “Bari bari” is the sound of biting into something hard like a rice cracker, or senbei (せんべい).

fuwa fuwa

フワフワ

Sounding a little like “fluff ” in English, from rabbit fur to cotton candy, this expression illustrates that something is soft and light. Fluffy marshmallows, pancakes, pillows… the list goes on.

Breakfast here is rewarding and sweet; you can’t go wrong with the coffee, chunky-toast and fluffy-egg sets. Try the peanut butter and banana toast, or French toast for ¥450, or the baked cheesecake with rum-raisin ice cream for ¥300.

The Tenma Music Festival is now an iconic event in the area with a reputation for providing an intimate festival experience. This year, 370 bands will give their best performances on 38 stages scattered throughout the vicinity, including a jazz boat on the river Okawa, plus JR Osaka Stn and Noda Hanshin Stn. The music ranges from jazz, rock, classical, pop and everything in between to get your feet tapping and the crowd dancing. Get a pamphlet at the main venue of OAP and choose the performances that best suit your tastes. A free bus between these venues will be available on Oct 4th. On the eve of the festival, the event will kick off with a free concert held at Kan Tele Ogimachi Square.

The Benkei Festival is a two-day spectacle celebrating the historical hero, Benkei who was a warrior monk in 12thcentury Japan. Stories of this larger-than-life man famed for his strength and loyalty are popular themes for kabuki, noh and TV dramas. His birthplace,Tanabe City, goes all out when hosting this annual festival. Various attractions will be held including, a play titled Legend of Benkei at Tokei-jinja on the 9th, Geta dance performed by 1,000 participants at Aoi Street on the 10th, a large market selling local produce at Ogigahama beach, and much more. The festival finishes with a grand fireworks show.

The Otsu Festival is one of the three largest religious events in Shiga, with 13 magnificent hikiyama floats, featuring fantastic karakuri ningyo mechanical puppets. Witness these hikiyama richly decorated with Gobelin tapestries, golden carvings and lacquerworks, which are often described as moving museums. Enjoy the captivating movement of the Japanese puppets performing on the floats. On the evening of the 10th, these beautiful puppets and ornaments will be on display at some houses in the neighborhood. A History of the World in 100 Objects (The British Museum Exhibition)

Legendary Artists of Japanese Western Painting

Spanning all eras of human history, reaching back even as far as our neanderthal roots two million years ago, this amazing and critically acclaimed exhibit from the British Museum is like riding a rocket through a living history book. Five pieces per era serve as an introduction to each milestone of human history, ranging “from a cooking pot to a golden galleon, from a Stone Age tool to a credit card.” Other notable pieces from the British Museum’s collection will make an appearance as well as four works made of fused quartz from the Kobe City Museum collection. The exemplary showing includes an ancient Egyptian coffin, the Flood Tablet (the world’s oldest piece of literature), and the original Hokusai masterpiece “The Great Wave.”

Museums in Osaka have featured many foreign master artists and classical Japanese arts this year, but you may have wondered, “Have notable Japanese artists tackled European genres, and where can I see them?” The answers are: “Yes” and “This exhibition.” Featuring the Nika Foundation Collection of Japanese art from the early 20th century to the present day, the organization’s centennial celebration highlights 35 prominent Japanese artists who modified and redefined European art styles, often by using Japanese subjects and settings. The diverse selection of 132 pieces includes a multitude of paintings along with statues and other 3-D works by Japanese artists plus a few pieces by European greats like Monet. Challenge: can you tell the European and Japanese artists apart?

Looking more like a J-Pop idol than a jazz saxophonist, Yukiko Onishi first picked up the sax in high school to join the school brass band. Originally from Mie prefecture, she has played with many renowned musicians as well as studying under Eric Marienthal of Chick Corea’s band. The jazz saxophonist, composer and arranger has composed music for TV commercials and also has her own brand of sweets and jewelry. In June this year “Yucco” appeared playing saxophone on the album Girl Talk by Jazz Lady Project. The Strypes

Taking their original inspiration from 60s blues and 70s punk bands such as The Yardbirds, Eddie and The Hotrods, Dr. Feelgood, and The Rolling Stones, these four young men from Cavan, Ireland formed in 2011. Releasing a self-produced EP of blues covers a year later, the boys soon built a following around their local area. After travelling to play clubs in London, they were quickly signed to Elton John’s label Rocket Music Management. Elton John said “They have a knowledge of R&B and blues at 16 years of age that I have only amassed in my 65 years. They’re just like a breath of fresh air.” When they played on The Late Show with David Letterman last year, Letterman ended the show saying, “The Strypes, that’s all you need to know.” Four-piece rock band from Ireland formed

This thrash metal band was first formed by guitarist Scott Ian nearly 35 years ago in New York City. One of the “Big Four” alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, the band still boasts four members of what could probably be called their classic lineup in Joey Belladona, Frank Bello, Charlie Benante and Scott Ian. The only missing member from that classic lineup is guitarist Danny Spitz. Spitz, who originally played in the band from 1983 to 1995, did rejoin in 2005 but departed again in 2007 to concentrate on his other career of watch designing! The band’s last album was the 2011 Worship Music but news is that a new studio album is on the way.

British rock band Def Leppard has a new album due to be released worldwide on Oct 30th. Titled simply Def Leppard, it’s the band’s 10th studio release and their first in seven years. On the new album, vocalist Joe Elliott recently said to Rolling Stone magazine, “Let’s Go (the new single) could be the long-lost cousin of Sugar (Pour Some Sugar On Me). And Dangerous (another track from the album) sounds a little like Photograph.” So, are the Brit rockers that started out as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) in the late 70s returning to their 80s heyday? Well, says Elliott, “It’s got everything from Bowie to Queen to Zeppelin to, well, Def Leppard.”

Stuck between a rock and a pop place, Australia’s party band Boys Boys Boys! brings its 90s-influenced pop rock to Japan. We Are Excited About Everything is the title of the Boys Boys Boys! 2014 release, and when asked what they are most excited about regarding the tour, Jerico Rose Wallace, a.k.a. Koko, says “To play a different crowd that doesn’t really know us and see what a different country’s audience reaction will be. And noodles.” According to members Bridget Turner and Jade Foo, Japan was not selected randomly. Though each of them have journeyed abroad alone in the past, this marks their first tour overseas as a band, and travel impressions from Bridget and Jade Foo led them to select Japan as their first destination. “Japan is rad, and our music is pop and flashy,” says Bridget. Koko adds that their funness, positivity, colorfulness, and aesthetics may suit Japanese youth. This has been part of their dilemma as a band; like much of the rest of the world, Australian airwaves are often dominated by pop music with little place for bands that stand out from the formulaic sounds. BBB is too indie rock for pop stations, as their music often features big guitar riffs and structures closer to indie rock, yet they can be shunned by alternative radio for being too pop. The result is actually ear catching and contagious, but it can be hard to reach new audiences without the radio support, even if their music was featured on Suburgatory, 90210 and Rich Kids of Beverly Hills.
