Dali Exhibition

From the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: Kuniyoshi & Kunisada Kobe City Museum

During the Edo period (1603–1868), ukiyo-e served as the equivalent of modern-day pinups for celebrities and as an important medium for presenting the latest entertainment news and fashion trends. As a result, once Japan opened up to the Western world in the 19th century, Japanese art was dominated by two great woodblock print artists, Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797–1861) and Kunisada Utagawa (1786–1864). This exhibition showcases prints by these two talented ukiyo-e artists who enjoyed enormous success in the late Edo period and who have been renowned ever since. Through these works, selected from the globally acclaimed ukiyo-e collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, visitors will have a chance experience a taste of Edo society. Spanish artist and surrealist icon, Salvador Dalí, is known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work, and perhaps best known for his painting of melting clocks in a landscape setting, titled The Persistence of Memory. He is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century with a repertoire that includes film and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media. Though chiefly remembered for his paintings, in the course of his long career he successfully turned to sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and, perhaps most famously, filmmaking in his collaborations with Luis Bunuel and Alfred Hitchcock. He was known for his flamboyant personality as much as his artistic work. This exhibition celebrates his work with a series of large-scale sculptures and accompanying prints.

Key works spanning the different stages of Ito Jakuchu s (1716–1800) long career will be featured to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his birth. Jakuchu was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period when Japan had closed its doors to the outside world. In this special exhibition, 50 paintings on fusuma (folding screens) from Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji – Kyoto s Golden Pavilion), created in 1759, are on display. The Temper Trap The Temper Trap are an Australian indie-rock band formed in 2005. Relocating to London, England in 2008, they released their debut album Conditions a year later in 2009. The album charted well in the UK and won the group the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Music Award for Best Group of 2010. It would be another three years before the follow-up self-titled album. Last month saw the release (after another long stretch) of the band s third album, Thick as Thieves. Guitarist Joseph Greer said, We ve just been writing and wanting to get it right. There is no point releasing something if we re not super happy about it. Of the album, critics have said that it captures the crowd-pleasing sound of their debut, unleashing likeable enough pop-rock with a bright electronic sheen.

Formed in 2001, New York Metalcore band Stray From The Path released their first three recordings independently ( People Over Profit ep 2002, Audio Prozac 2003, and Our Oceania 2005) before signing to Sumerian records. With only guitarist Thomas Withams still in the line-up from the original members of 2001, the band s website describes them as striving for a style of music that is not common in the modern age. They also emphasise that they show no mercy in the lyrics when they see injustice. The music is fast and furious, punk in attitude with the growling vocals of many a metal outfit. Not for the faint of heart!

Often credited as the creator of the classical crossover genre, Sarah Brightman started out with the UK dance troupe Hot Gossip before a West End musical debut in the popular show Cats. In 1987, as part of the cast of The Phantom of the Opera she sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. With 180 gold and platinum sales globally, she was named in 2010 by Billboard as the fifth most influential and best-selling classical artist of the 2000 s. Sarah Brightman s latest studio album was the 2014 Voce, though for a limited period a downloadable album, Rarities, a mix of unreleased tracks, B-sides, demos and limitededition releases is available.

(Wales, Scotland, England and Ireland). These books and papers have been educating me about songs long forgotten since 1900 and I am going through them to find exciting melodies and words not heard by anyone who is alive today. I would like to honor that find with some new recordings. These recordings will accompany a book being released about the items I inherited. The musical books are only part of a large historical collection. I discovered my grandfather s brother was a leader in the revolutionary movements in Ireland and Scotland in 1916. It seems that this inheritance includes information that history departments of universities do not have. It was all found under beds and in cupboards where it has all remained hidden since the 1950s.

Previously, you mentioned that while writing Vagabond, you had to choose 14 songs out of 27 for the final product and that you might use the remaining songs on another album. Will there be another studio album including some of those songs or newer material?

INTERVIEW

Eddie Reader KS caught up with Scottish singersongwriter and ex-Fairground Attraction vocalist Eddi Reader prior to her return to Japan. We last spoke with you before your Japan tour in 2014 when Vagabond was due to be released in Japan. What has been happening for you musically since 2014?

I have inherited 50 or more historical musical books which trace popular traditional music of the four countries in the British Islands

Yes. I have some of the Vagabond sessions still to edit or re-write or re-record. These will surface as soon as my obsession with the 1900s has finished playing with me. As my best of album is now available, the Japan gig will be showcasing this album with songs going back to Fairground Attraction right up to the present day. I try to be spontaneous when I perform so all performances will have a sprinkling of Fairground Attraction songs and songs from all over my four decades in music – those songs gave me the wings to fly as far away as Japan. I will always be grateful to Japan for the welcome it gave me and the music. Jul 15 Great news about the club Onzieme crew! While Onzieme sadly closed its doors in March, the ex-Onzieme crew has been supporting parties and festivals since its closure and they are starting new parties at different venues throughout Osaka. This month, they have invited German techno producer Frank Mueller, aka Beroshima, and Japanese techno icon Tasaka to perform at club Double in Higashi Shinsaibashi. Mueller has been a pioneer of electronic music since the mid 90s and one of his best known tracks Horizon, released by Cocoon recordings, became the No.1 hit in Ibiza in 2007 (and one of the best selling records for Cocoon). He was a frequent favorite at WIRE, the biggest Japanese techno festival produced by Takkyu Ishino, which ended in 2013. Together with DJ Tasaka, you may be able to reminisce in some good old WIRE sounds as well. Also, Onzieme s sister venue Zakuro (Pomegranate) finally opens July 1st. It is a hip French restaurant with cool music and luxy vibe, just like Onzieme. Zakuro will also hold lounge-style music events once in a while so an eye on their website for more details.

Apps for Japan Travel Make your trip to Japan smooth sailing with these three handy apps.

Text: Dave Wingler • Images: KS

Traveling in Japan can be a truly awesome experience, however it can be a tricky place to navigate at times if you re unfamiliar with the language and don t know your way around. Instead of lugging around a bulky guide book, though, try a mobile app to help you find your feet. Here we present three apps that will make traveling in Japan easy.

Japan Travel Guide by Triposo

Learn Japanese – Phrasebook for Travel in Japan

» Cost: Free with inapp

purchases » What it does: Navigating Japanese

cities and finding the best tourist hotspots can be daunting for a newcomer. Japan Travel Guide comes to your aid by providing information on just about any Japanese location you could think of accompanied by useful maps. There are offline maps of the bigger cities like Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka. Alongside useful and detailed information, it also offers a phrasebook and pronunciation pointers. » Why it’s great: The app offers some incredibly useful information for travelers by providing hospital listings, exchange rates, and even the weather forecast. It can help you plan the perfect trip by suggesting the best places to see, eat, sleep, and shop. You can even use the app to book hotels! » Developer: Triposo » Platform: Android and iOS » Website: triposo.com

» Cost: Free with inapp

purchases » What it does: If you d like to try your

hand at learning some useful phrases during your travels, Learn Japanese is a great pocket phrasebook. It is a wonderful tool for learning Japanese as it gives both the pronunciation and Japanese reading for each phrase. » Why it’s great: This easy-to-use app is useful for both travelers and language learners. It has recordings done by native Japanese and is replete with spot-on topics for your Japan adventure: greetings, directions, eating out, and emergency phrases. For a small fee, you can upgrade for a huge catalog of spoken content. One of the best ways to learn is by listening and repeating and this app makes that easy with slow, clear pronunciation from a native Japanese speaker. » Developer: Codegent » Platform: iOS and Android » Website: learnapps.co

Japan Connectedfree Wi-Fi » Cost: Free » What it does:

Connecting to a new hotspot every time you arrive in the vicinity of a free Wi-Fi area can be a hassle. User registration, looking for the connection in a long list, and actually connecting to it, all takes up time that you may not have. Japan Connectedfree Wi-Fi speeds the process up. It allows you to connect to any free WiFi connection with a single tap. » Why it’s great: Saving money on cellphone bills is a priority for everyone. This app helps users to steer clear of a data plan and use the free Wi-Fi connections available. The app lists countless free Wi-Fi connections in both cities and countryside areas and that s great for the budget! » Developer: NTT Japan » Platform: iOS and Android » Website: http://www.ntt-bp.net

Holy guacamole! Three Mexcellent spots that will leave you with plenty to taco-bout! Text & Images: Adam Koch

Saboten

El Zocalo.Burrito

El Pancho

Look out! There s a new Mexican restaurant in town and it s already making a name for itself. Located in the bustling streets next to Yotsubashi station, Saboten is a reasonably large space that comfortably seats 50. Vibrant decorations and a beautiful, wood-andtile interior provide this restaurant with a modern aesthetic in line with its ethnic heritage. The open-air bar and kitchen allows the customer a full view of the restaurant s inner workings. The lunch menu has a limited set selection, which makes ordering easy and efficient. Their lunch special consists of juicy al pastor pork, a gooey quesadilla, chicharrónes, beans, potatoes, pickles and tortillas to wrap it all up in. The lunchtime halfprice happy hour is a welcome addition. Dinnertime is when the possibilities take off. An expansive menu with a huge variety of dishes awaits any patron of Saboten. If you re looking for the hot new restaurant, this is the place to go!

Wherever I have lived, there has always been a local burrito shop that I visit as often as possible. In Osaka, that s El Zocalo. With a small interior that seats approximately 20, this restaurant is best for small parties or those looking for quality take-out burritos. At El Zocalo, they stick to their strengths. What they do, they do well. Their best filling, in my opinion, is the carnitas. The meat is nicely caramelized on the ends while keeping it tender. For vegetarians, they have a bean-and-cheese option that pairs well with their meat-free filling. Burritos come with a side of chips, and choosing the Set C option will get you guacamole and a drink. For big eaters, I would recommend ordering a side of nachos as well to crunch down on. To go with their food is a complementary selection of beer that any brew enthusiast will find suits their needs quite well, and of course, there is always the frozen margarita.

El Pancho is the most established of these restaurants. They have inhabited this location dishing up Mexican goodness for almost 30 years. Their history is literally written on the walls; praise and well wishes are scrawled there by satisfied customers to the point where almost every inch of wallspace is covered with writing. El Pancho is a highly desirable location for dinner on the weekends. If you go early enough in the night, around 6:00–6:30pm you may be seated, but do not expect to be seated during the high point of the night at 8pm or later – reserve to be safe. Their plates are substantial and well crafted – the enchiladas and chimigangas a highlight. The fajitas are well-seasoned and filling. As for drinks, the bar does not pull their punches, so be sure to order at least a pitcher of the margarita and enjoy!

Adventures on Awaji Venture over to Awaji Island this summer where whirlpool cruises, traditional puppet shows, and delicious, mouthwatering burgers await. Text: Celia Polkinghorne • Images: Jason Haidar

T

ucked away in southern Hyogo prefecture sits Awajishima, the birthplace of Japan, according to Japanese folklore. To get there, you have to drive or take a bus across the Akashi Kaikyou Bridge, the longest of its kind in the world. The almost-2,000meter suspension bridge connecting Kobe on the Honshu mainland to Iwaya on Awaji Island is about as high-tech as Awaji gets. Once you re over the other side, you are in traditional countryside Japan. But with so many fun, unique, and interesting things to see and do, Awaji is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway.

The Whirlpool Cruise Make your way to the Port of Fukura and jump on the three-deck, three-masted Kanrinmaru for a ride out into the Naruto Strait off the southern tip of Awaji Island. This sturdy, 50-meter-long and 10-meter-wide sailing ship will take you to the Naruto whirlpools beneath the Onaruto Bridge, which connects Tokushima to Awaji Island, providing safe passage over the moody, surging seas below. In this narrow strait merging the PaciďŹ c Ocean with the Seto Inland Sea, powerful whirlpools

Feature swell and churn created by the large volumes of water carried by strong currents moving between the two sections of ocean. This natural phenomenon is influenced by high and low tides, and the unique underwater geography of the narrow strait. Whirling around as though massive plugs have been yanked from the sandy seabed, water appears to be draining through to unknown depths beneath the sea. Clusters of camera-clad whirlpool watchers gather at the side of the Kanrinmaru deck vying for that coveted whirlpool money shot. Fleeting on some days and tenacious on others, the whirlpools vary in size, depending on the time of year, time of month, and the intensity of the tides.

Spring and autumn are when they re at their most spectacular, advises 33-year-old crew member Jiro Kurume. They re also best around the time of a full moon – the whirlpools can reach up to 20 meters in diameter. Still, the cruise itself is most pleasant in the warmer months, out of reach of the bitingly cold winds that are frequent in the other seasons. If you get seasick, or are not one for cruises, the second-best way to see the Naruto whirlpools is to make your way to Uzu no Michi, Onaruto bridge s whirlpool-viewing platform, where you ll look down through the glass windows at the spirals of seawater below. Another bonus addition to your whirlpool experience is

the Ashiyu Uzunoyu hot spring – a free, 100-percent-natural, hot-spring foot bath, where the water actually swirls around like its own gentle, mini whirlpool. You ll find it near the Kanrinmaru boarding area, in front of the Uzushio Dome Nanairo building; perfect for pre- or postcruise relaxation. CRUISE INFO » Times: Daily departures from the Port of

Fukura between 9:30am and 4:10pm *Departure schedule is subject to tides, weather conditions, and availability. » Price: Adults (13 and over) ¥2,000, children (6–12) ¥1,000 » Access: Express bus (90 minutes) from JR Sannomiya Station to Fukura » Address: Uzushio Dome Nanairo Bldg, Fukurako, Minami-Awaji » Phone: 07-9952-0054 » info@uzu-shio.com » uzu-shio.com

The Awaji Burger In Japan, it s not unusual for a food item to gain cult status, which is precisely what has happened with the Awajishima Burger. Therefore, your visit to Awaji wouldn t be complete without jumping on the bandwagon to suss out the revered burger for yourself. Awaji Island is well-known, among other things, for its onions and you can see them hanging up to dry almost anywhere you go on the island. This explains the emphasis on the onion in the Awajishima burger. There are many incarnations of this burger across the island, but the most soughtafter comes from Awajishima Onion-Kitchen.

If vast ocean views and a delicious local culinary creation sounds like a satisfying lunch hour to you, head straight for the Awajishima Onion-Kitchen (Uzushio Roadside Station). Be ready to line up at this popular roadside spot, but know that the wait will be worth your while. The Awajishima Onion Beef Burger is the recommended choice, though there are others, and before long you ll be sinking your teeth into layers of crispy lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, shredded beef, and onion in various forms – onion chips, pickled onions, and an scrumptiously crispy, deep-fried onion cutlet credited for the burger s signature crunch. Top that off with homemade tomato-and-

Feature onion sauce, sandwiched between a plump bun, and you ve got yourself an award-winning burger. This tasty creation won first prize at the national Tottori Burger Festa competition in 2013. A large part of the appeal is the local ingredients, namely the beef and the onions – both grown on the island. The tomatoes in the sauce are also home grown. Also popular, is the Onion Gratin Burger, which came in second place in the same competition. This burger is made with Awaji chicken and the gratin sauce contains milk from Awaji cows. For curiosity s sake, look out for the Roadside Station Burger – there s only one on sale per day. This burger is basically a 250g slab of Awaji-beef sirloin steak inside a bun. It is pricey, but if you get a chance to try it you ll see why! If it s still there on the day you arrive, and you have some spare change, don t miss your chance! If you re feeling adventurous, finish off with a serving of their onion-flavored icecream (yes, it does taste like onion, and it s not bad!). Puppet Show If it s the arts and Japanese culture you re chasing, Awaji Island s traditional puppetry of more than 500 years, Awaji ningyo joruri, offers a fascinating insight into one aspect of the local arts scene. Two beats of a taiko drum and a twang from a shamisen is all it will take to get your undivided attention, ready for the drawing of the long, navy curtain that cloaks the 12-meter stage inside the iconic puppet theater known as Awaji Ningyoza. Depending on the stories planned for each day, there are a handful of characters you are likely to meet; among them, the majestic, red-shirted Ebisu, god of the ocean. Fascinating to watch, each of this four-foot doll s movements coincides with a drum beat, yet the puppet s motions are fluid and oddly humanlike. It is mesmerizing, and

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #194 JULY 2016 / kansaiscene.com

takes a good few seconds to register the three black-hooded figures giving life to this handmade, wooden character. This is probably the most interesting point of difference between puppetry in the rest of the world and traditional Japanese puppetry like Awaji s ningyo joruri (puppetry and chanting), which is similar to the well-known bunraku style. In most puppet theaters worldwide, puppeteers go to much effort to hide their manipulations from the audience, but in ningyo joruri, the manipulation is done in full view of those watching. But it is not at all distracting. In fact, the human movement behind the puppets seems to afford them an even more profound human quality. The biggest challenge is expressing what s on a character s mind and how he is feeling in his heart when you are

Feature feeling differently, explains puppeteer Shinkuro Yoshida. For instance, when you think something is funny and you want to laugh, but the character is supposed to be sad and crying. Yoshida s craft really does require next-level concentration, as the audience learns in a mini workshop during intermission. Each doll requires the impeccable coordination of three puppeteers to bring it to life; a legs specialist, a left-hand specialist, and a head and right-hand specialist. Legs training takes seven years, followed by another seven on the left hand, and once you graduate to operating the head and right hand, you are finally a puppet master. But you can never fully master ningyo joruri. No matter how good you are, there is always something you can improve, insists Tomosho Takemoto, another of Awaji Ningyoza s puppet masters. The puppeteers really show off their skills once they arrive at the part of the story where Ebisu starts to get drunk after drinking too much sake. Being in the company of a drunk person can be quite humorous, but not nearly as amusing as watching a drunk puppet hiccup his way through a monolog. The chanter kneels next to the musician to the side of the stage, voicing all of his drunkenly wisdom in slow, slurred, and jolly tones from a book of beautifully scripted kanji. You ll be left

wondering how long it took for them to perfect the sloshed puppet routine. Fittingly, Awaji puppetry is integrated into the island s school curriculum so that students – some future puppet masters in the making – can begin learning the craft from a young age. The 500-year tradition is being passed down through the generations to make sure there are always trained puppeteers around to pull all the right strings. AWAJI NINGYOZA Located in the Fukura harbor area. » Access: Express bus (90 minutes)

Getting Around

/ MAPS & INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or new Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com – available from April 8), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia. com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
