t may be the least populous of Japan s four main islands, but Shikoku has boundless adventures to offer. What s more, it s easily accessible from Kansai. If you re looking for a unique and local Japanese experience away from the regular tourist spots, make a loop around eastern Shikoku and discover the prefectures of Kagawa and Tokushima.

Takamatsu to Kotohira: Gardens, Temples, and Udon Shikoku is easily reached by bus from JR Osaka Station, and a great first stop on the island is the city of Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture – home to the majestic Ritsurin Koen. One of the most famous historical landscape gardens in the country, it was built by local feudal lords during the Edo period. The 750,000-square-meter space is filled with ponds, historic trees, tea houses, and even a waterfall. A tour through the garden takes one to two hours and you can choose to go with a volunteer guide, but many of the guides do not speak English, so it may

be just as easy to make your own way around. After browsing the lush green gardens and taking in the stunning scenery, treat yourself to a serving of Takamatsu s renowned local noodle dish – sanuki udon. While there is plenty more to do in the city of Takamatsu, if you only have a few days to explore the area, take the 40-minute train trip south west straight to the town of Kotohira. This beautiful little town is best known as the site of Shikoku s largest shrine complex – the Kotohira Shrine. It is an epic climb to the temples at the top – up seemingly endless flights of stone stairs – but the views of the town and surrounding area are truly gorgeous and make the workout worthwhile. The stairway to the top is lined with quaint souvenir shops full of gifts unique to the region – a good excuse to rest weary legs on the way. Be sure to leave enough time at the end of the day to check out Japan s oldest surviving original kabuki playhouse – the Kanamaruza Theater, built in 1835. From time to time, this

ancient playhouse still stages kabuki shows, but when there are no shows scheduled, visitors are allowed in to get a close-up look at all the trap doors and back rooms of this fascinating old wooden construction. For dinner, look for a restaurant serving honetsuki-dori – mouth-watering salty fried chicken on the bone – a specialty of the area. There are many accommodation options to choose from in Kotohira. If you d like to go for something traditional, Kotohira Kadan provides a true ryokan (Japanese inn) experience with tatami (straw mat) rooms and openair baths.

Kotohira to the Iya Valley: Hills, Bridges, and Gorges Before saying farewell to Kotohira, do yourself a favor and book a spot in a morning udon-making class at the Nakano Udon School. While it may not be obvious at first, this is no ordinary cooking class. The minute this becomes apparent is when the instructor suddenly starts blaring the K-pop dance tune Gangnam

Style by the South Korean artist Psy, directing the class to stand up and knead the dough to the beat of the song! The participants are then ordered to wrap their lumps of dough in plastic and place them on a floor mat where they would jump up and down on top of their parcels to songs like YMCA and boppy Jpop numbers. At the end of this hilariously entertaining class, not only have you had your morning workout, but you get to eat the udon you made with your classmates in the school s spacious dining room. From Kotohira, a 40-minute limited-express train will take you further south to Oboke Station from which you can get to Oboke Gorge, one of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in Japan. Oboke Gorge and the neighboring Koboke Gorge

(meaning big dangerous steps and small dangerous steps ) are narrow, steep-sided gorges near the entrance to the picturesque Iya Valley. The Yoshino River snakes through these gorges, creating swirling rapids between the jagged, rocky walls – perfect for whitewater rafting, canyoning, and hydrospeed. Several outdoor-adventure companies offer these activities on the river from April to November with half-day tours starting from around ¥5,500. If adventure sports are not your thing, jump on the Oboke Sightseeing Boat Cruise (¥1,080), a gentle half-hour boat ride down the Yoshino River where you can sit back, relax, and admire the marvelous scenery. One of the most iconic images of the Iya Valley is the kazurabashi (vine bridge). There were

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #208 SEPTEMBER 2017 / kansaiscene.com

once 13 suspension bridges made of mountain vines spanning the Iya Valley, thought to have been built because they were once the only way to easily move people and goods across the river. There are just three remaining today, and the largest and most popular – Iya Kazurabashi – is located just 20 minutes from Oboke Station by bus or taxi, and is well worth a visit if you are already in the area. A picture-perfect spot for a picnic, the bridge stretches 45 meters over the Iya River at the center of the valley. It is rebuilt every three years and is anchored to tall cedar trees at both ends. It can only be crossed in one direction, and crossing over can feel a little unsettling with the open wooden slats beneath your feet! There are several accommodation options near to the vine

bridge. If you are camping, there is the Kazurabashi Camp Village about three minutes drive from the bridge, otherwise, Hotel Kazurabashi or Iyahikyo Hot Spring are both good choices.

Iya Valley to Tokushima: Whirlpools, Ramen, and Dance It s a two-hour train journey from Oboke to Tokushima. If you can get an early start, you will have time to visit Naruto – the northeastern most city of Shikoku, known for its giant ocean whirlpools. These can be seen in the Naruto Strait underneath the Onaruto Bridge connecting Tokushima to Awaji Island. For an up-close look at these powerful swells, there are two companies that run boat tours from the Tokushima side – Uzushio Kisen and Uzushio Kankosen. Beautiful views of the area can be had from the top of Naruto Park – the center of the activities and attractions surrounding the whirlpools. Don t miss out on a bowl of signature Tokushima ramen, while you re in this area.

Tokushima prefecture is also home to the famous Awa Odori summer festival. The Awa Odori dance is a unique and colorful style of dance accompanied by bright, traditional costumes. While the festival only happens in the summer, the Awa Odori Kaikan is a facility that celebrates Awa Odori dance and music throughout the year. Tokushima visitors are invited there to see dance demonstrations in the evenings. These are extremely lively, colorful, and entertaining affairs where the guests are taught the dance and invited to get up and join in. It is an excellent chance to get to know the local people and culture.

Tokushima to Shodoshima: Beach Views, Olives, and Soy Sauce For your last day in Shikoku, an island-hop to Shodoshima is the perfect stopover before returning by ferry to Honshu. The island was the first area of Japan to successfully grow olives, and is sometimes known as Olive Island. (While you re there, treat yourself to some olive-oil ice

cream garnished with a green olive!). This tiny island is also where more than half of Japan s soy sauce is produced, and the sweet smell of soy brewing wafts through the streets lined with machiya (old Japanese wooden houses). On Shodoshima, there is an olive park, a monkey park, and a spectacular gorge in the mountainous interior called Kankakei Gorge. However, the island is probably most known for a site called Angel Road – a sandbar that connects a chain of smaller islands, and because of tide patterns, can only be seen and walked across twice a day. The site has become popular with couples as it is believed that a couple who walks the sandy path hand-in-hand, without letting go, will be joined in marriage. The Shodoshima International Hotel is the closest accommodation to Angel Road with nice views of the site. Stay a night and see the path at different stages throughout the day as the tides change. World Suicide Prevention Day

Text: TELL

Starting September 9th, TELL will launch a Live Chat support service for anyone who lives in Japan and can speak English. The service will initially only operate on Saturday evenings from 10:30pm until 9am on Sunday mornings when the TELL Lifeline opens again. This will mean 24-hour English support between the Lifeline and the chat service from Saturday mornings to Sunday evenings from September. This new chat service will allow people all over Japan the opportunity to become a Lifeline Support Worker and provide support to people in need online. TELL is looking to expand the chat service to other nights of the week, eventually providing a 24-hour nationwide English support service.

TELL Lifeline:

The next TELL training will start on October 1st and run until December 10th with mandatory sessions online on October 1st, November 12th, and December 10th. Upon completion of the course, you will continue to gather practical experience in the phone room and/or via live chat to complete the training.

The Training Program involves: • Watching online video presentations over the week (about 2-3 hours total) • Weekly telephone role plays with a trainer (about 30 minutes) • Reading a training manual (15-40 min per week) • Weekly Skype conference calls (90-120 minutes) Once a volunteer has completed training, we ask for a minimum of 12 months commitment to the Lifeline and Live Chat. This breaks down as roughly 10 hours a month: two four-hour shifts and two hours of monthly mandatory supervision. We are now accepting applications for the October training.

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day and people all around the globe will be walking, marching, or running to take a step to remove stigmas around mental health. Join the 2017 Talkie Walkie by participating in one of our walks in Osaka or Kyoto. Or, you can hold your own walk for TELL anywhere in Japan and help raise important funds to get our Lifeline 24/7. Participants will each receive a TELL Talkie Walkie tote bag. We ask you to gather signatures on the day as you make connections and start conversations along your walk. Runner’s Bar Correr

Falafel Garden

Pizza Bar Fullhouse

Nara

Kyoto

Osaka

This family-run restaurant offers entirely gluten-free and organic food that is thoughtfully prepared and served by friendly, down-to-earth staff. The menu (English available) is Spanish-inspired and includes gluten-free bagels (a customer favorite), a rice-flour pizza set and a few different Japanese curry sets, including a chicken curry served with a tower of organic vegetables, as well as a small range of drinks, many of which are organic too. The vegan lunch set is an absolute winner, owing to the perfectly cooked and super fresh seasonal vegetables that are only minimally seasoned in order to let the produce speak for itself. It is only a small place so some waiting might be involved, but it is totally worth it as you ll leave with your hunger abated and feeling satisfied that you ve done your body some real good through healthy eating. Reservations are required for dinner and for Sundays.

Great falafels can be hard to come by in Japan, so this restaurant is a must for those in Kyoto craving some fried chickpea goodness. Naturally then, one of the star items on the menu is the falafel pita, which is packed full of flavor, crispy falafels, fresh vegetables and mouthwatering tahini sauce. If falafels aren t your thing, there are plenty of other pita options including baba ghanoush (highly recommended as well), avocado and chicken. Can t choose? The vegan plate set and sizeable dinner sets have a bit of everything that will be sure to satisfy any palate. The restaurant itself is large with a homey feel, the service is adequate and the staff can communicate in English. It is a bit out of the way, but easily accessible by train. And what s a short train ride when there s tasty Israeli fare at the end?

Pizza is a vegetarian go-to when eating out with meat-loving friends because you can bet there will at least be the classic Margherita on the menu. Not only does this small restaurant do a superb Margherita, they also make a tasty vegetable pizza (cheesy base topped with different vegetables), a decadent four-cheeses pizza drizzled with honey (the honey is optional), and a range of meat pizzas – all served, importantly, with superbly cooked pizza dough. Splash over some Tabasco sauce for an extra kick and choose from a range of sides if you re extra peckish. There s also a ¥1,600 all-you-can-drink menu that lasts 90 minutes and includes draft beer, sake, chuhai, and cocktails. The staff are attentive, friendly and speak enough English to get by. If you like your pizza with a side of karaoke, the staff also run pizza orders over to Moonshine Karaoke Bar across the road.

Events  Live Music Thurston Moore

SEP

Best known as the singer and guitarist of the band Sonic Youth, US musician Thurston Moore released the solo Rock n Roll Consciousness in April of this year. His fifth solo album, critics claim it has leanings towards the Sonic Youth sound. Alongside Moore for the recording and tour are My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe, and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley (the live band also includes guitarist James Sedwards). The album is just five tracks long, but two of those tracks run for longer than 10 minutes. Describing the sound of one of the tracks, Moore says, The guitars are heavy rock n roll and the lyrics are gentle. The album is very positive in tone and Moore said in an interview prior to the release, They are songs I want to have and play forever.

Ian Hunter & The Rant Band Forty-five years ago, Ian Hunter s band Mott the Hoople decided to call it a day. Then, a fan of the band, David Bowie, offered them a song he had written – All The Young Dudes – and convinced them to continue. The song was a huge hit and the band played on for a couple more years before everyone finally went their separate ways. Hunter continued to deliver solo releases and will now perform in Japan again with the band from the 2001 studio album Rant, which includes Steve Holley on drums (ex-Wings with Paul McCartney) and Andy York on guitar (John Mellencamp band). Ian Hunter and The Rant Band have a new album out called Fingers Crossed (2016) and after this year s release – the single Ghosts – Classic Rock magazine wrote, On this evidence, nothing s going to touch him (Ian Hunter) in these golden years. Ami Nakazono

Aki Rissanen

Sep 23

Oct 10

Currently based in Japan, Ami Nakazono also spent some time living in the US studying music at the famous Berklee College of Music, specializing saxophone and flute. At the same time, around 2008, she was also playing with the French jazz singer Violette De Bartillat.

Jazz pianist Aki Rissanen last year won the Finnish Emma music award for Best Jazz Album of 2016 with the release Amorandom. Veteran US jazz saxophonist Dave Liebman said of the 37-year-old Finnish musician, One of the best young pianists I ve heard in years. The UK newspaper The Guardian described Rissanen and his trio as a formidable force, with fresh musical intelligence to match flawless techniques.

2016 saw the release of her debut solo album, Make It Happy, described as a mix of smooth jazz, groove, lounge style, and funk-rock rhythms. Nakazono s live band for the Osaka gig consists of Jun Abe (piano and keyboards), Sota Morimitsu (bass), and Fumihiro Ibuki (drums). Already building a reputation both in Japan and abroad, Nakazono played the Hua Hin International Jazz festival in June and has growing support everywhere she goes. Alongside Rissanen in the jazz trio are Antti Lotjonen on bass and Teppo Makynen on drums. On last year s award-winning album, the Nordic musician says, The music…is based on an animation movie to which I composed a soundtrack a few years ago. Although the original music has gone through many stages of transformation, you can still hear a cinematic flavor in it. British musician, songwriter, and Game of Thrones actor Wilko Johnson turned 70 this year, and it seems that the former guitarist for bands Dr. Feelgood and The Blockheads is still going strong despite playing a farewell tour in 2013. At the time, Johnson had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Thankfully, after extensive treatment, he pulled through, and being back on the road after beating the odds, he told KS that it feels Weird but nice. Johnson is back in Japan for dates in Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Tokyo. The Kyoto gig is already sold out and Kansai fans will be hoping for a career-wide set list; his comment on this was that it ll be the same old blues, but fans of Johnson will know to expect the unexpected. After such a long and successful career, artists tend to slow down but Wilko Johnson plans to soon be in the studio recording a new album with bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Dylan Howe. Getting Around

MAPS & INFORMATION / INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
