Hello Dear Readers, How was your summer? In case you followed some of our advice in the Summer 2015 edition, you may have spent it in great places and brought home exciting stories to tell.

‫برؤية جديدة تتألق بها‬ »‫الحسناء الساحرة «هيالري رودا‬ The 72nd Venice Film Festival founded in 1932 and held from 2nd to 12th of September 2015, is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the “Big Three” film festivals alongside those of Cannes and Berlin.

Chopard’s new Imperiale campaign was launched in Venice, in the exclusive setting of the Venice Film Festival. This occasion provided an opportunity to discover a new extension of the Imperiale line: the “Empress Jewellery Box”. This capsule collection incorporates five exceptional pieces – watch, earrings, ring, necklace and tiara – to be worn alone or together, a tribute to the flamboyant spirit of the Imperiale collection.

Imperiale, exceptional character When the codes of contemporary elegance echo the majesty of the Roman Empire, a great classic is clearly in the making.

The eminently feminine Imperiale collection dazzles with the richness and delicacy of its details. Since 2010, it has become a flagship range of Chopard’s feminine watchmaking. In 2011, the Imperiale watch inspired a highly sophisticated collection of jewellery. Interwoven three-dimensional rose or white gold lacework adorned with amethysts – the colour of emperors since the Byzantine era – outline the noble profile of a decorative design reminiscent of the embroidery embellishing the hangings and cushions on which rulers were accustomed to placing their insignia. Present throughout the Imperiale watchmaking and jewellery collection, the motif imbues this line with its strength of character and regal standing.

Hilary Rhoda, a charismatic muse Only an exceptional beauty could give substance to this highly unique elegance. Majestic, feminine and sophisticated, Hilary Rhoda embodies the Imperiale woman to perfection. Originally from Maryland, on the East Coast of the United States, she has a unique ability to capture light and since a very young age has caught the attention of the greatest photographers and creators.

It is therefore no surprise that the Maison Chopard has associated itself with the talent, elegance and beauty of Hilary Rhoda. In Venice, at the launch of the new Imperiale campaign to which a luxurious capsule collection set the crowning touch, Hilary Rhoda walked the red carpet wearing a selection of flagship pieces from this collection that is aristocratically showcased in the “Empress Jewellery Box”.

The “Empress Jewellery Box” If one were to invent a set of jewellery for a modern empress, it would undoubtedly be one stamped with the seal of independence and freedom, from which one could multiply the various interpretations and associations in order to let the imagination run riot. Chopard has given birth to this jewellery version of an ideal wardrobe, thus paving the way for the sculptural and precious development of the Imperiale line.

The “Empress Jewellery Box”. While its name is a nod to the noble dreams it carries, the pieces it consists of testify to strong roots in the codes of contemporary aesthetics.

Five pieces describe today’s jewellery daydreams, the kind that adorns women of character radiating an aura of timeless chic.

The jewellery line consists of a pair of earrings, a ring, a necklace and a spectacular tiara featuring a design echoing the “Imperial” motif. t the Arabian Court, the third property on the kilometre-long private beach where I am staying, my private butler leads me to the Falcon Suite at the end of the building where I discover more of an enchanting interior design and, being situated on the corner, some amazing sea-views onto the beach and the lush gardens. One morning looking down from the fourth floor I can’t believe my eyes – a young deer hopping around, enjoying himself in the green grass, maybe looking for some breakfast to nibble on.

My suite has a lovely intimate terrace with a totally Arabian and cosy feel; the dining room has an amazing selection in the mini bar, perfect set-up of glasses and snacks; and my private butler is just a phone call away should I need my favourite brand of tonic water to be refilled.

As a person who appreciates delicate details, landscaping and tasteful interior design, I am overwhelmed by the things I see, as wherever I look or am taken, I discover perfection and harmony. I admire the hundreds of rose petals swimming in the Moroccan-inspired pool which I pass after the concierge bangs the big round metal ornament welcoming and announcing the arrival of every new guest.The spirit of the Orient with dramatic architecture embraces me; I feel as if I am being taken back to an old and enchanting civilisation. he elaborately styled living room makes you feel like you’re in your own home. A big flat-screen TV, an elegant, comfortable sofa with pink pillows (how did they know it’s my favourite colour?), elegant armchairs and a large square coffee table with gorgeous books and some magazines at the guests’ disposal. Flower bouquets of fresh pink roses are tastefully displayed all over the suite.

As I walk through the rooms I discover the en-suite bedroom with an amazingly draped overhang on the majestic bed, which is elegantly decorated with pink pillows (matching the roses) and a throw in Designers Guild fabric, one of the best British brands when it comes to beautiful high quality fabrics with special designs (trust the interior designer in me – my previous vocation). The bed is almost too beautiful to jump in, but when night comes, housekeeping makes sure that I am as pleased as before when finally meeting the Egyptian cotton sheets and pillows. By the way, a pillow menu is available – of course, as noblesse oblige!

The One & Only Royal Mirage evokes a sense of majesty and style in every aspect and this is the reason why so many guests return to this sanctuary year after year. The Residence & Spa provides the perfect hideaway with a sumptuous dining room and library just for its guests.

The Residence, which is part of the Leading Hotels of the World, has a dedicated team that takes care of the eighteen suites and thirty-two Prestige rooms all facing the sea. Have you tried the Moroccan Hammam before? Whether you have or not, you should not miss this amazing opportunity to indulge in an experience of a traditional Oriental Hammam. For hours you will be pampered, scrubbed, washed and massaged with black Moroccan soap and I guarantee you have never felt so refreshed and relaxed. The old you polished to reveal a brand new person.

When you enter a Hammam, you leave the outside world in the changing room. And in ancient times, there was little hurry to return to it, so why would you? In the Suite de Gagny, the large open bathroom is one of a kind, with the bathtub in the centre, right in front of the fireplace. CEO of Katara Hospitality Q: The Savoy in London is your latest addition to your portfolio, are you planning to own more hotels in London in the future?

A: Katara Hospitality, formerly known as Qatar National Hotels Limited was established in 1970 by the government of Qatar to manage the Gulf Hotel, which at the time was the first five star property in Qatar – currently the Doha Marriott Hotel.The company was then re-named in 2012 as Katara Hospitality to reflect the company’s heritage and our international expansion plans.

Since then, we have continued to expand our portfolio of iconic hotels to invest in and develop a collection of peerless hotels in key sought after international locations. London is and will continue to be one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world, particularly for travellers from the GCC. The historic nature and heritage of properties in the iconic city and in fact across our other European destinations are attractive as we constantly seek to grow our portfolio with hospitality icons that have set standards in the industry. It’s in our interest to preserve these icons by investing in their restoration and discrete modernisation to ensure their heritage and luxury offering is available for future generation to enjoy.

Qatar is of course our homeland and we intend to maintain our position as market leaders in the local hospitality industry by developing world-class hotels here. Europe as a whole is a strong focus for our planned international expansion and 60 per cent of our current portfolio, 34 properties operational or under development, is made up of international hotels.

Q: Your portfolio of seven internationally branded hotels in Qatar is spread all over the country; do you plan to create your own hotel brand in the future?

A: In Qatar, the seven operational properties we have are Doha Marriott Hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, Doha, Somerset West Bay Doha, Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, Sharq Village & Spa, Mövenpick Hotel Doha and Sealine Beach Resort. We currently have many others under development in Qatar too.

As part of our expansion, we have launched our standalone operating division early this year, Murwab Hotel Group, which manages an international collection of boutique upscale hotels and brands offering contemporary hospitality steeped in cultural heritage. The group currently manages properties under its three main areas of business: Murwab Hotels, The Bürgenstock Selection as well as a collection of independent non-branded upscale properties.

Katara Hospitality was founded by Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and is owned by Qatar Holding LLC (QH) a global investment house established in 2006. The portfolio of international hotels in operation today is more than a dozen with worldwide known brands in luxury such as Raffles, Peninsula and Intercontinental.

We recently opened Saraya Corniche Hotel in Doha under the Murwab Hotel Group.

2015/2016 will see the opening of an additional four Murwab Hotel Group properties in Qatar in addition to the rebranding of Sealine Beach Resort to Sealine, a Murwab Resort.

Q: It is known that you aim to continue your journey of expansion in Qatar and abroad, expanding your portfolio of iconic hotels to 60 properties by 2026. In which countries and continents are you planning to do that and are you focusing more on city or leisure destinations?

A: Our plan is to continue investing in and developing iconic hotels not just in Qatar but also in key international destinations. Katara Hospitality continues to explore investment in a collection of unique properties in key sought-after international locations.

While we are well on our way to achieve this goal, my firm belief has always been that lasting success only comes when you build solidly.

We take immense pride and pleasure in reviving iconic hotels, restoring them to their former glory and ensuring their heritage is secured.

Our main criteria for our properties are that they must be outstanding and are proud iconic landmarks of where they are situated, rather than specific locations and destinations. With our 45 years of experience, rich expertise, commitment and investment, they can be elegantly and carefully restored for future generations.

Q: Your project in Lusail, Katara Towers, has been in the media and seems to be an incredible piece of architecture. Can you tell our readers more about it and what they can be looking for?

A: The award winning Katara Towers, Lusail Marina District expected to open in 2018, reflects an architectural translation of Qatar’s national seal, representing the traditional scimitar swords. A natural extension of Doha city, Lusail has been designed to encompass a modern, luxurious yet practical business and residential environment while being relevant for Qatar’s thriving economy.

Rising gracefully from the podium level, the arched towers will host a luxurious five-star hotel to cater to discerning business travellers, a lavish five-star deluxe hotel and residences to meet the needs of those seeking sophisticated luxury accommodation and branded apartments to become home to permanent residents. The property will make available a total of 604 rooms and residences. State-of-the-art entertainment and recreational facilities, including specialist boutiques, VIP movie theatres, signature restaurants and a private Cigar Lounge are to be complemented by exquisite banqueting and conference spaces, as well as office dedicated areas.

The Katara Towers project was recently enhanced with the commissioning of a manmade satellite beach-front island. Home to a range of leisure and water sports facilities, food and beverage outlets as well as worldclass water parks within a stunning garden environment, the development truly is a sight to be seen. Q: The Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland on the Lake Lucerne located 500 metres above the lake will be a new type of resort in your portfolio offering a professional team responsible for medical care and specific treatments for guests. Post-operative recovery, treatments for burnout patients, medical check-ups and nutritional consultation and weight regulation are in addition to the beauty and relaxation treatments. Do you share the vision of many hoteliers believing that these kinds of resorts are the future in a stressful world?

A: The Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne, expected to open in 2017, is a unique resort in an impressive location with three luxury hotels and Residence Suites. The resort includes the Bürgenstock Hotel, Palace Hotel and Waldhotel of which will be the leading healthy living destination in Switzerland. The Waldhotel is designed by star architect Matteo Thun, extraordinary architecture meets modern medical standards. Regeneration and prevention at the highest level, with 160 rooms and an integrated spa. The Alpine Spa will span across 10,000 square metres and the adjacent Waldhotel will be a leading healthcare destination with medical professionals offering a variety of treatments and consultations.

A: As with all of our properties, renovations have to carefully honour and protect the property’s inherent rich architectural heritage. As you say, discreetly modernising our properties with the latest luxury amenities, state-of-the-art facilities combined with an exquisite historical design is what we at Katara Hospitality would call ‘real luxury’. I land in an August evening on the tropical island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The friendly driver from the resort hands me a refreshing towel, invites me to have some water or juice and off we go on an hour’s drive along roads that I last knew two decades ago in a chic BMW X5.

So many friends have told me about the celebrated and worldrenowned luxury resort of Le Prince Maurice on the peaceful east side of the island in the Indian Ocean and I am mightily impressed with I get there, stepping into a glorious colonial-style lobby with high ceilings and a magical scent that immediately catches my attention.

My suite has an even more magical atmosphere of lit candles, gifts on the bed, bubbly and macarons, which I cannot resist sampling. And in the end, I ‘sample’ every one!

Fresh coconut water, a large variety of fresh fruit, bread, cheese, smoked tuna and much more is waiting. My favourites are the small pots of different yoghurts, which are homemade with small pieces of fruit and cereal.

I make it my daily delight and try to stay away from those tasty chocolate cookies!

Embracing tranquillity I prefer a fresh, natural breeze to air-conditioning, so the next morning, I wake up to the local birds greeting me with a ‘kinka-joo’ and ‘tsit-it-it’. My terrace faces the ocean and I embrace nature and the tranquillity that lies before me.

My day passes peacefully but quickly after strolling along the beach and discovering the resort’s hidden corners. One evening, I have an aperitif at the floating bar and meet the French general manager, Christophe Plantier. The floating bar is in the middle of a lake and an enclosed fish reserve that fish and even sharks call their home. While sipping my delicious drink, I hear a loud splash from time to time and wonder just how big these fish are!

I end that evening with a selection of delicious sushi and maki at the open air Asian restaurant and admire its tastefully chosen decor. Back in my suite I discover housekeeping has lit candles again, flickering in square red glass containers which create that magical cosiness along with the colours of the wooden furniture and shutters mixed with orange touches and satin pillows (some items are truly Hermes orange – love it!).

The secluded beaches of white sands and palm trees are the special ingredients of this fairytale resort. I stroll along after breakfast to reach my little piece of sand between palm trees and lush vegetation on one of the smaller beaches with a delightful view of nearby islands.

One of the two pools in the tranquillity zone just in front of my balcony is reserved for guests looking for a secluded place just a few steps from the sea and sand. Pool and beach service is offered all over the beaches, so soft towels and fresh water will be there in the blink of an eye. The staff is even on hand to delight you with a freshly cut pineapple before lunchtime.

Learning about Mauritius The carefully manicured lawns, walkways and little corners here and there make the stay so pleasant for the stressed and luxury-seeking individual like me. I wander round and find my way to the calm lagoon which mingles with the fresh green hinterland and the natural fish reserve. On my way back I stop at the library where I find not only hundreds of books in German, English and French, but an enchanting patio where the reader can have a quiet moment.

The ancestors of the giant tortoises that can be seen today at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens and at the Casela Bird Park were introduced from Aldabra in 1875. The hump-backed Zebu cattle, occasionally seen pulling carts along the island’s crowded roads, were introduced from Madagascar.

Perfect evenings On one of the ten days of my stay, I decide to grab a taxi and take a tour to the west coast of the island. My driver is one of the locals famous for their hospitality and friendliness and he is ready to answer all my questions about the country, the new government, places to visit and even places to avoid at night. I wasn’t planning to go clubbing, but it is always good to have first hand tips from the locals.

I book myself a signature U-experience massage of ninety minutes. As I enter the Spa, which is located in a separate colonial-style building with the same thatched roofs as all over this sixty hectare property, I immediately feel that this will be pure relaxation. Before I even enter my treatment room, I take a moment to relax around the heated pool, sipping vanilla tea in the most chilled-out way, inhaling the atmosphere.

My skin feels nourished by the choice of Ylang-Ylang oil and my shoulder muscles soothed by the deft hands of the therapist and the best head-massage I have ever received ends the treatment. I decide to sip another vanilla tea before seeking refuge in the steam bath from a tropical shower.

At the U SPA you will find the range of renowned Sisley products and you can choose from phytoaromatic facials and body treatments to anti-ageing facials. Your feet will receive a unique foot care menu by celebrities’ favourite foot guru, Brice Nicham, who works between New York, Monte-Carlo and Mauritius.

The luxury of a private villa It was love at first sight when I crossed the threshold of my suite, but when Dalida, the ever-smiling and helpful assistant manager, asks me if I would like to experience a stay in one of the nine beachfront villas with heated private pool I cannot say no!

Staying at such a private villa, you have all you need at hand. The lovely pool just in front of your bedroom to indulge in as soon as you wake up; a dining table to have breakfast, lunch or dinner in a private atmosphere with the sandy beach right in front, but still protected from passing guests by lush bushes, colourful plants and trees.

There is an outdoor shower, adjacent to the bathroom, if you like to take your shower in the middle of nature. I definitely love it and I am grateful for the experience of a night in this beautiful villa. It would be perfect for a family holiday or a group of friends.

But there’s more – the villas on the lagoon on stilts overlooking the natural fish reserve. Here you can indulge in total nature between water and land.

That night, Le Prince Maurice invited all guests to a beach cocktail party with a local Sega dance around a fire. A lovely way to try the choice of fruity cocktails, taste some delicious canapés and socialise with other resort guests. I get caught up in conversation with one staff member, an ever-smiling lady keen to know how Le Prince Maurice could enhance its guest services. I have nothing to say as everything is perfect.

I’m glad I have ten days at Le Prince Maurice so I can sample all the brilliant cuisine. At Asian Tapas, there’s a flavourful choice of maki, sushi, sashimi and tapas. The ambiance is just exquisite and the decoration divine.

At Barachois, I discover what dining in the middle of mangroves on the water in an idyllic and romantic setting feels like. Seafood fans can enjoy dishes seasoned with Mauritian spices and ingredients. But before your romantic candlelit dinner, drop by the floating bar, where the same ambiance awaits you and you’ll hear the big fish jumping!

This is a short list of the bird species recorded in Mauritius. This species occurs over a large range. It is widespread in Europe, Asia, and Africa. 82 cm (26–32 in). Their plumage is mainly light chestnut brown with blackish spots on the upperside and buff with narrow blackish streaks on the underside; the remiges are also blackish. The common kestrel readily adapts to human settlement, as long as sufficient swathes of vegetation are available, and may even be found in wetlands, moorlands and arid savanna. A number of subspecies of the common kestrel are known, though some are hardly distinct and may be invalid. Most of them differ little, and mainly in accordance with Bergmann’s and Gloger’s Rules. Tropical African forms have less grey in the male plumage.

The Cape canary (Serinus canicollis) is a small passerine bird in the finch family. It is a resident breeder in southern Africa and has been introduced to Mauritius and Réunion. Its habitat is fynbos, grassland and gardens, preferably in highland areas.

It builds a compact cup nest in a scrub. The Cape canary is 11–13 cm in length. The adult male has a green back with black edging to the wing feathers wings and tail. The underparts, rump and tail sides are yellow, and the lower belly is white. The rear head and neck are grey, and the face is cinnamon.

The female is similar, but with a less grey on the head.

The juvenile has greenish-yellow underparts with heavy brown streaking. This species is easily distinguished The redfrom the yellow-fronted canary by its lack of black face whiskered bulbul markings.

1,200 miles (1,900 kilometres) off the south-east coast of Africa and east of Madagascar, Mauritius has 200 miles (320 kilometres) of beautiful coastline bordered by lagoons, boasting one of the largest coral barrier reefs in the world. Nature is abundant.

The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita has recently reopened after a three-month closure which saw the construction of two Sanctuary Ocean Pool Villas and four Sanctuary Beach Pool Villas, as well as numerous enhancements to create the luxurious Presidential Suite Sanctuary, a three- to five-bedroom hideaway. The villas are scattered across an eleven-acre private island. I had the chance to be one of the first ones to visit the villas and I can say ‘wow’ – interior design is enchanting, almost Caribbean, outdoor spaces are heavenly arranged.

For more comfort and privacy there are three secluded beaches on the private island. The two bays of white sand on the northern face of the island flank the main swimming pools, with views across the Indian Ocean to Ile aux Cerfs. The Quiet Beach to the south of the private island looks out onto lush mangroves and is a peaceful retreat. Let your mood choose day by day!

Mauritius has become famous in recent years for its glorious golf courses, and the challenge of the fairways and greens is complementary and unlimited to all guests. You even get a buggy with GPS and golf balls for use on the driving range.

On the secluded, south side is the over-water Spa. It offers rituals and therapies that combine the island’s healing traditions with treatments inspired by its African and Indian roots, with many ingredients such as aloe vera, vanilla, ylang ylang, volcanic basalt rock, sugar, molasses and coconut sourced locally.

I tried the Spa’s signature treatment, the sugar cane therapy massage, which uses sugarcane sticks for a deep and relaxing massage, the first of its kind on the island. A yoga pavilion at the southern tip of the Spa is home to a weekly Wellness Programme, which combines classes of yoga, meditation and Tai Chi, so one can extend the relaxation and just indulge in total well-being.

The Fitness Centre is worth going to, as it is set within beautiful tropical gardens on the mainland, an aerobics studio where you can do everything from circuit training to muscle toning or just grab a bike and cycle around at your own speed.

There can be nowhere more picturesque to go jogging than the eleven-kilometre track which hosts tours several mornings a week. They even throw in some water-aerobics to mix things up a little. Definitely a lot to occupy the whole family’s preference!

found a particularly charming feature at the Four Seasons the Lord of the Rings-inspired Hobbit Village for four- to nine-year-olds.

It has a puppet theatre, sand pit, swimming pool and kids’ kitchen, where little ones can learn to make pizza with help from the resort’s chefs.

Mauritius’ abundant live reefs sustain thriving corals and tropical fish.

The resort operates its own PADI licensed dive centre, run by experts who know every nook and cranny and accommodate any group or individual wishing to explore the lagoons. Mauritius is one of the world’s top game fishing centres with marlin, sailfish and sharks regularly caught off its coast.

For those with slightly bigger appetites, Acquapazza restaurant is rather spectacular; the entrance adorned with sculptures and lit flames. Beau Champ, though, is the best place to breakfast.

Starting the day with Madagascan crab Benedict, Mauritian shrimp rougaille, or a buffet of tropical fruits, cold cuts, homemade yoghurts, cereals and pastries is pure bliss.

The seafood, meat and vegetable grills on offer at dinner are mouth-wateringly good, as are the choice of wholesome sides, rum muddler cocktails and signature desserts. The modern and fresh feel is thanks to the open kitchen, exclusive grape cellar and three waterfront pavilions which have tables with panoramic views out over the barachois to the Indian Ocean lagoon.

Get your heart rate going with mountain and quad biking, horse riding and archery, surrounded by the panoramic views of the island. The children’s park, opened in 2013, lets youngsters enjoy water bumperboats, go-karting and an adventure course.

Ile aux Aigrettes, managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, is a small island off the south-east coast. It has set international standards for the protection of endangered species and is a sanctuary for plants, animals, reptiles and birds including Mauritian Kestrels, Green Gecko Phelsumas and giant Aldabra tortoises.

As tempting as it is to stay put at the resort, the vibrant island must be explored. Rhumerie de Chamarel, the island’s best producer of rum and located in a picturesque, fertile valley, is open for guided tours from June to December. Lunch at L’Alchimiste restaurant perfectly complements the sweet aromas of the distillery.

The island’s vibrant capital of Port Louis is definitely worth a visit, with the beautiful Caudan Waterfront, the Blue Penny Museum (home to two of the world’s rarest stamps, the 1847 Blue Penny and Red Penny), Prosper d’Epinay’s original statue of tragic lovers Paul and Virginia from the early 19th century, and the French colonial 18th century Municipal Theatre.

With white sands and a turquoise lagoon, the St Regis Mauritius Resort, on the south-west tip of the island, is known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

A scenic drive past sugarcane fields over mountains and valleys and through small villages heralds my arrival from the north-east of the island and I can’t wait to get to Le Morne peninsula, a most favoured spot on the island.

Le Morne Mountain at the extreme south-western tip of Mauritius, with a summit of 556 metres above sea level, is truly one of the most imposing sights on the island. I remember it well from my last visit to Mauritius and am looking forward to being back in this history-laden corner of the island, where impressive mountains and their inspiring shapes make my imagination run wild, as does my driver with the interesting stories he tells me on our journey.

The peninsula was known in the early 19th century as a refuge for runaway slaves. After the abolition of slavery in Mauritius in 1835, a police expedition travelled here to inform the slaves that they had been freed. However, the purpose of the expedition was misunderstood and the slaves leapt to their deaths from the rock.The traditional village became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

From New York to Mauritius The story of the St Regis begins in New York’s Gilded Age, where a group of supremely wealthy families rose to form the country’s first aristocracy, among them such names as Carnegie, Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. The leaders of this new social class were the Astors, with matriarch Caroline Astor at the helm of high society. Visionary and tenacious, Mrs Astor hand-selected those with whom she associated.

Known as the 400, the wealthiest and most renowned clamoured to be included.

Mrs Astor’s son, Colonel John Jacob Astor IV, developed a new style of luxury, reflecting the comforts afforded to the wealthy. These innovations adorned Astor’s classic Beaux Arts landmark, the St Regis New York, when it opened in 1904 on 55th Street and Fifth Avenue. It was a hotel where gentlemen and their families could feel as comfortable as they would as guests in a private home.

Eight years after the hotel opened, John Jacob Astor perished in the sinking of the Titanic and his son Vincent sold the hotel to Benjamin Newton Duke. In 1932, the iconic Old King Cole painting by Maxfield Parrish was moved to the St Regis and made the centrepiece of a new namesake bar, which is now present in every St Regis all over the world.

It remains a trendsetter, with bartender Fernand Petiot’s 1934 drink, the Red Snapper, today known globally as the Bloody Mary.

The resort, with its 172 guest rooms and suites, was inspired by the beauty of yesterday but has the foresight of tomorrow, with the feeling of privacy and relaxation, the intention of the Astor family. Butlers are ready to anticipate every need. Each guest room faces the turquoise lagoon, which is certainly different to the view on East 55th Street.

The interiors are extravagant, with St Regis signature bedding, refined and detailed furnishings and craftsmanship, and elegantly appointed bathrooms with St Regis remedy amenities.

Thierry and I stop at one of the concierge pavilions, where guests can get any service they need without having to reach the main reception area. Luxury is comfort and comfort is luxury! We head to the restaurant where I am invited to savour the flavours of the Indian Ocean with a typical Mauritian dish, but not before I get to taste the famous Bloody Mary.

It is spiced up with salt, pepper, lemon and Worcestershire sauce, and today each St Regis celebrates the regional influences of the original recipe, prepared with fresh homemade mixes. At the St Regis Mauritius Resort, la Belle Creole Mary, as it is called here, has an aloe vera and coconut twist. Delicious and smooth!

A journey through the spices of India, the exotics of Asia, the freshness of a beach grill and the finest French-Mauritian traditions is on offer daily. St Regis’ Bangkok-inspired Floating Market, serving Malay, Thai and Vietnamese flavours, does a mean ginger and lemongrass crème brulee. There’s a duck red curry and a green papaya and seared beef salad I’d happily devour every day.

I

Atsuko has exceptional sashimi and tender hunks of Wagyu. The Boathouse Bar and Grill is open for lunch and dinner with a prime spot on the beach. Le Manoir Dining Room serves a buffet dinner of French-Mauritian recipes, and I recommend the palm heart vindaye and the chicken curry.

I have seen lots of spas on my tours through various resorts, but the size and comfort of the Iridium Spa treatment rooms are outstanding. I start my treatment with a heavenly bath for twenty minutes before sliding between the soft sheets on the massage bed, which the therapist adjusts to my needs and I float away under her professional hands.

The St Regis Mauritius Resort invites families to observe dolphins from a private speed boat and explore the spectacular lives of these magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat. This experience will definitely be on the list when I bring my kids here, as they love to watch these beautiful creatures and go snorkelling and swimming in crystal clear waters (who doesn’t?).

Coming back to life, I am offered some tea and opt for a ginger one which is served with a small pot of delicious honey. Going back to the en-suite dressing room with large shower and private steam room, I realise that I should have spent the whole afternoon here.

Everything is a bespoke experience. You are even asked to choose the music during your treatment.

The resort had been named after the ship Le Saint Géran that was wrecked off the shores of Mauritius For the younger guests, One & Only Le Saint Géran put the fun into exercise and nutrition for children ages three to seventeen.

The youth fitness programme, run by the fitness team, offers wellbalanced and challenging activities such as swimming classes, yoga, golf, tennis, fitness camps, personal training, a variety of water sports and healthy cooking classes.

Designed to encourage fun and laughter in a safe and happy environment, the action-packed Kids Only programme provides activities and regional immersion for children with a variety of interests.

For the creative, there is plenty to learn, from mosaic making and Mauritian Séga dancing to kite making and cookery classes. I pop by to take a look and have to let out an audible ‘aw’ at how cute the little ones look, kitted out in their own chefs’ whites.

I’m almost jealous of the night-time treasure hunts and bananaboating the little adventurers embark upon. They even get to take part in stage productions. Active types are in for a treat with golf initiations, mini beach Olympics, volleyball, tennis and boat rides.

Having known Le Saint Géran twenty years ago, I was quite excited to see what time had done to it. How I was surprised and delighted when I found the resort the same as it was two decades ago.

What has changed are the epicurean delights on offer. At Prime, which has an astonishing modern look compared to the rest of the resort, guests can get the finest Australian Angus Wagyu beef, fresh seafood and organic produce. I’m torn between the Mauritian-style crab soup and pan-roasted rock lobster for my favourite, and when it comes to dessert, passion fruit or banana soufflé tempt my taste buds like nothing else.

Their waterside Indian Pavilion is a visual pleasure, which allows guests to be part of the North Indian creative culinary art. Aromas of roasting spices fill the restaurant, enhancing your appetite.

Here you can indulge in Indian flair in a tropical setting admiring the vibrant colours of the decoration and the lush green of the sugarcane-clad mountains in front of you. Your dining table is set on top of the lagoon and an inviting bar awaits you to start your night within this unique place.

The resort had been named after the ship Le Saint Géran that was wrecked off the shores of Mauritius in Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s classic 18th century tale of star-crossed but doomed lovers, Paul et Virginie.

But there’s no need to worry anymore about shipwrecks these days. A sheltered lagoon provides calm waters for an array of complementary water sports ideal for adults and children alike including water-skiing, windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing, pedalo and kayaking.

While meandering around the resort, I’m baffled by a lady on a bicycle in the middle of the lagoon. Yes, this is possible as long as the bicycle is standing on a platform. The bicycle even has a basket on the front in case you want to bring some groceries – or rather sunscreen and water!

The combination of a dedicated fitness team and unique training environment makes keeping in shape feel like a treat rather than a chore.

The fitness centre is fully equipped with Technogym, including Kinesis, a mind and body pavilion and an eighteen-metre lap pool.The resort also offers personal training, yoga, Pilates and a variety of innovative classes.

For the bigger ones, the beautifully landscaped Spa gardens ooze tranquillity. Created by Bangkok-based landscape designer Bensley Design, which also cultivated the lush gardens of the award-winning One & Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives and One & Only Cape Town, the gardens lead to the peaceful Garden Spa Pavilion. This provides an exotic garden walkway suspended over water with idyllic views of gardens, sea and sky. With a soundtrack from the natural surroundings, a place to experience blissful relaxation.

Based on ESPA’s innovative unwind, restore and elevate philosophy, the One & Only Spa offers tailored treatment plans, making use of powerful authentic techniques, indigenous ingredients and natural, paraben-free products produced by ESPA, all geared to restoring your equilibrium.

f you visit in autumn, bring plenty of scarves and warmer jackets for layering, as you can expect a crisp breeze. Winters are cold, but the city is at its most charming all decked out for the holidays.The Christmas shopping is amazing and Santa Claus is waiting on every corner.

Getting around in New York is different to any other city. New Yorkers don’t drive. They use a limo or one of those iconic yellow cabs, which are pretty much everywhere. I use my smartphone to navigate, New Yorker-style. This is a place where you can step out the door with no plan and still end up having an unforgettable adventure.

With its soaring skyscrapers and world-class entertainment – from ballet to Broadway – top restaurants and the 24-hour neon glow of Times Square, Manhattan is arguably the most exciting island on the planet. And a hub of publishing, finance and the arts too. From ritzy Madison Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to the downtown-cool of SoHo and the eclectic St Marks Place, the phrase ‘shop till you drop’ was made for this city.

If you feel in need of a bit of tranquillity take a leisurely stroll through Central Park, and soon you’ll see why this impressive urban oasis is one of the world’s most filmed destinations. It’s the city’s nature playground – an 843-acre green stamp on an otherwise grey jungle of steel and concrete, home to iconic landmarks like the Bethesda Fountain, Strawberry Fields, Belvedere Castle and the flower-filled Conservatory Garden.

The High Line, an elevated train track turned urban park, attracts some five million visitors a year with its manicured landscaping, temporary art installations and killer vistas of the cityscape. Inside the Edition, much of the building’s existing design has been retained, with the original dark wood on the walls and the floors on the second floor restored. The 30-foot-long hand forged blackened steel fireplace and the sculptural spiral staircase, which had the hefty price of $800,000, are modern interpretations of those found in the grand mansions of Millionaire’s Row.

Above the lobby on the second floor the much-anticipated restaurant, the Clocktower, by the celebrated Michelin-starred London chef Jason Atherton, overlooks Madison Square Park and provides an all-day dining destination for those who enjoy high-quality, seasonally-inspired food and drink in a vibrant setting. Atherton and Schrager first teamed up on the critically acclaimed Berners Tavern at the London Edition, which was just recently named best restaurant of the decade.

Each dish is a surprise, such as big eye tuna tataki with English cucumber, radish, avocado and ponzu, or North African spiced Colorado lamb, with yoghurt, smoked aubergine and young curried onions. The Social Section menu features food designed to share, like the forty-day dry aged côte de boeuf with green bean and foie gras salad, bone marrow jus and potato gratin. For a sweet finish go for a twist on strawberries and cream with vanilla custard, olive oil cake, verjus sorbet or a pistachio soufflé with chocolate sorbet.

he New York Edition’s 273 guest rooms have the feel of a private home. You enter a dark oak wood panelled foyer as if stepping into an upscale New York apartment in the 1920s. The original windows in each room perfectly frame the New York City skyline. Many of the suites have 180-degree views of Manhattan and the enormous penthouse apartment has 360-degree vistas for $8000 a night.

Each room has a classic, extra long white oak desk, inspired by JeanMichel Frank, and a bed with a dark walnut headboard and a custombuilt walnut platform with bespoke walnut nightstands.

Chef in the spotlight Jason Atherton has worked under Pierre Koffmann, Marco Pierre White and Ferran Adria at elBulli, before joining the Gordon Ramsay Group in 2001. After launching Maze in London and overseeing the opening of five more Maze restaurants globally, Jason left Gordon Ramsay in 2010 to launch his own company. Within six months of opening his flagship restaurant, Pollen Street Social, in April 2011 in London’s Mayfair, it was awarded a coveted Michelin star.

At the end of 2011, Jason opened tapas bar Esquina in Chinatown, Singapore and Pollen in June 2012. Later that year, he launched two more ventures in Asia, a third Singapore restaurant Keong Saik Snacks and 22 Ships in Hong Kong. Three new restaurants in London followed in 2013. His second Mayfair restaurant, Little Social, opened in March to great critical acclaim. A month later, Social Eating House, in Soho on Poland Street, welcomed diners, with Paul Hood as head chef. It became Jason’s second Michelin-starred restaurant.

n response to a wealthy landowner’s request to make the best use of the natural resources of the infertile Baccarat region of eastern France, King Louis XV created Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat in 1765 by royal decree.

The tremendous popularity of Baccarat glassware is evident in the numerous top awards and honours the firm has been given in the last two centuries. It was at the 1823 Exposition Nationale in Paris where they received international praise and acclaim, with Louis XVIII among those admiring and appreciating the quality of craftsmanship and modest prices of the wares. The popularity of Baccarat flourished and became en vogue among European elite.

In the mid-19th century Baccarat chandeliers and tableware were favoured by European royalty, with the Russian aristocracy some of their most loyal clientele. At one point, one-third of Baccarat’s workforce (over 2,000 employees) was assigned solely to fulfil the orders for the Russian court. In addition to the extravagant pieces, Baccarat created scores of stemware for the Russian market. A custom initiated by the first tsars mandated that no one should drink from a glass touched by their own lips, and many grand dukes and noblemen followed suit.

Consequently, many a Baccarat crystal goblet was immediately smashed after only a single use.

A Parisian hôtel particulier in midtown Manhattan

A hôtel particulier is a grand townhouse. Whilst an ordinary maison (house) was built as part of a row, sharing walls with the houses on either side and directly fronting onto a street, a hôtel particulier was often fully detached and, by the 18th century, always located entre cour et jardin, between the entrance court, the cour d’honneur, and the garden behind, akin to the townhouses which were home to the well-to-do of Georgian London.

Now New York has its own hôtel particulier on 20 West and 53rd Street, a beautiful Parisian-style property with a touch of Cote d’Azur at the poolside where guests chill out on daybeds inspired by southern French cabanas surrounded by hand-painted forestry scenes with reference to the region of Bacarrat in eastern France.

Entering the lobby, you are greeted by a mesmerising twenty-foot wall adorned with thousands of Baccarat’s most iconic glasses, the Harcourt. Each custom-sized glass has been laid horizontally and lit by an LED light to create a round-the-clock light show.

Classic pieces have been sourced from the brand’s archival and contemporary collections for the public spaces and rooms.

Seventeen custom chandeliers hang throughout the property – many suspended by rough cord rope – while one stand-out chandelier is made exclusively of wood and hangs in the secondfloor bar.

The Chantilly domain is a fantastic playground for horse riding fans.

Everything has been in place to give the spectators a horse show that was as spectacular as it was amazing. Carriages provide another link to the equestrian world. A large number have been taking people for a ride in the park after they had visited the stalls of the artisans and appreciated their ancestral knowhow. Added to this is an exhibition of different types of carriages organised by the Fédération Française d’Attelage. For the youngsters a demonstration and first experience of the art of Polo with the Chantilly Polo Club as well as pony rides and carriages were in the programme.

Spectators also had a role to play because they are called on to vote for the Concours d’Elégance. The ladies are not forgotten either, and the most elegant woman as well as the lady wearing the most beautiful hat will also be awarded a prize – Elégance oblige!

The intra-regional tourism is a major driver of Al Marjan Island’s popularity, and this is in sync with the general trend in Ras Al Khaimah.

The island’s idyllic location is a key factor attracting not only Qatari

nationals but also expatriates and visitors, who prefer to spend their vacation in serene surroundings and activity -packed environment.

The competitive characteristics of Al Marjan Island make it a popular destination for visitors. We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of tourists from all parts of the UAE and the region in general. We have devised a strategy to transform the island into one of the world’s leading artificial islands, offering leisure and entertainment, as well as investment and business opportunities for developers of hotels, resorts, shopping centres and retail activity.

Moreover, Al Marjan Island is a wonderful masterpiece of engineering, located on a splendorous coastal stretch of Ras Al Khaimah with sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf. It consists of four small artificial islands that house residential units as well as hotels, resorts, sports facilities, entertainment centres and premium shopping offering top brands. The island stretches four-and-a-half kilometres into the sea, spread over an area of almost three million square metres. Q: What are the upcoming residential developments for investors interested in having a second home in RAK? A: We have number of new developers commencing construction, which will attract investors willing to get another home at RAK. Most recently, Diamonds International Corporation (DIC) unveiled a new upscale project that will feature a five-star luxury hotel, branded residential apartments and forty water villas. The mixed development will be another striking sight to be added to the UAE skyline of high-end luxury projects on Al Marjan Island, the new development spread across 276,079 square feet. It will be equipped with a world-class community centre, open spaces, paved roads and parking spaces. Additional amenities include a gymnasium and a swimming pool and a group of retail outlets.

Also, we have recently launched the completion of phase one of the Al Marjan Island Corniche project which extends up to Al Hamra Village, creating a three-kilometre-long pedestrian and cycling track along the waterfront. The project links Al Marjan Island with Al Hamra Village through an additional line parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Road. It represents a quality value-addition to AMI and Al Hamra Village in particular and to RAK’s tourism and real estate development in general.

The corniche reflects Al Marjan Island’s vision of a contemporary waterfront village with innovative modern designs that complement the coastal environment and encourage outdoor living and activities.

The corniche is a three-kilometre circuit of running, cycling and walking paths. It is located on the south-west edge of the island, and connects the island’s entrance in the south with the proposed Food & Beverage Boardwalk to the north.

We have awarded the fourth flushing channel construction work to internationally experienced contractor China Harbour Engineering Company. The flushing channel will improve water circulation and enhance the aesthetics of the island, ensuring high returns on investment.

The construction of this flushing channel will reinvigorate the island’s

marine environment as it is 700 metres long and forty metres wide.

Moreover, it opens the door for developing new real estate projects on its banks.The flushing channel is one of a series of initiatives undertaken

by Al Marjan Island to ensure that the marine environment around the island follows the highest global standards. It will connect Gulf waters from the west of the island to the sheltered bays on the eastern side, creating picturesque views that will appeal to discerning investors and end users alike. The channel will also be a focal point for real estate development in the neighbourhood and a new tourism generator for the surrounding hotels and retail and entertainment facilities.

Q: Ras Al Khaimah is investing heavily in tourism as it seeks to diversify its economy. The emirate’s Tourism Development Authority reported that 330,000 tourists visited the emirate in the first half of the year 2014, providing $119m in revenues.

What are Al Marjan Island’s goals and vision in the next ten years?

A: The island has become a UAE significant tourism hotspot. It has attracted tourists from all over the world. It has been engineered perfectly and is home to the world’s most luxurious waterfront homes, hotels, resorts, sporting facilities, recreational and amusement parks and leading international retail brands.

Al Marjan Island presents an opportunity for investors to enjoy returns earlier only in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with buyers from around the world taking advantage of the fact that the land is 100% freehold and there are no corporate, income, sales or export taxes. I am received in the most welcoming way at the beautiful reception just minutes before my therapist Camilla takes me through the vast corridors to the treatment room. We pass the relaxation area and I promise myself I shall return after my ninety minutes ‘Art of Touch’ treatment, as the glamorous pool looks so inviting.

The face and body treatment starts with a foot ritual and is made up of three steps dedicated to energetic touch techniques. The ‘Art of Touch’ treatment relaxes, revitalises and regenerates from head to toe, explains Camilla in her soft voice. She asks me to lie on my back, which is unusual as it is normally the contrary for the start of a massage, but the face will be treated first.

On Monday 31st August 2015 Richard Mille and Peter Harrison welcomed guests including brand partners Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado to the official opening of the Monaco Boutique.
