You would think that Halloween would just be for kids; after all, it’s a night that has evolved around tricks, treats, and silly scares. Children do love Halloween and spend weeks planning their costumes and neighborhood routes for the best candy. (You know they remember every house that gives full-size chocolate bars!) But as this gallery filled with Halloween treats shows, it’s not just the kids that love this holiday! Adults are sharing Halloween cards with friends and family and spending weeks decorating their houses and yards for the festivities. In fact, many are dressing themselves up too! Enjoy this gallery filled with reader submissions all about the joy of Halloween…for all ages!

Pregnancy Portraits I live with regret for not getting some beautiful pregnancy portraits of myself during either of my two pregnancies. Now granted, it wasn't really a "thing" to do back in the 1990s, but looking back I really wish I would have. My body will never again look as it did while pregnant, and although I did some journaling at the time, I have no good visual documentation of the experience. As a professional photographer, I now offer this service in my studio. However, if you are on a budget or just want to play, I strongly encourage pregnant women to attempt portraits on their own or with a friend!

Even capturing just one beautiful pregnancy portrait will serve as a powerful reminder of this unique and exquisite experience of growing new life inside of you! Whether or not you use a professional photographer or attempt your own DIY portraits, here are some tips to capture beautiful pregnancy portraits. 32 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2023

1. Timing – It is best to wait until later in the pregnancy when your belly is large enough to tell that you are pregnant (usually around 7 to 8 months) but not so close to delivery that moving and posing is challenging or baby comes early and you miss the opportunity! 2. Wardrobe – Select clothing that shows off your belly! This generally means either tight-fitting to show that “baby bump” or a completely bare belly. Try playing with some flowy fabric draped around the body for an extra soft and beautiful look, revealing the shape of your tummy! 3. Setting – A plain background or blank wall with beautiful natural light from a window is perfect for keeping the focus on the pregnancy! If you are adventurous, you could try some outdoors or with a more dramatic background. The key is to play with a few different settings for some variety. 4. Posing – Although a pregnant body is more challenging to maneuver, capture a variety of poses, including side profiles, sitting, standing, and leaning against a wall. Also be mindful where you place your hands. Ideally slide them on top or underneath your tummy to frame it. One final tip is to include other siblings in the experience! Children love to hug, kiss, and whisper to their new baby brother or sister, so be sure to capture those moments as well! And when editing, don’t forget to convert some of your photos to black-and-white, as that can add some elegance and impact to your beautiful pregnancy portraits!

It’s Cool to Be in School! There is nothing like the beginning of a new school year—whether it is the first first day of school, or the last first day of school! Kids pose with varying degrees of enthusiasm for those all-important first-day photos; and tears, cheers, or both are shared as the new school year starts! Students carry a mixed bag of emotions along with their backpacks filled with fresh school supplies, wondering who will be in their classes and what the new teacher will be like. All the worries fade into excitement as old friends reconnect and new friends are made when school starts again. Excitement and boredom accompany new learning challenges, and every student grows, changes, and matures as the school year gets underway. This gallery of back-to-school layouts celebrates these fresh beginnings and all the possibilities of the year ahead.

Quick, easy, and satisfying, texture paste is an element that crafters of all experience levels can apply to their projects. You can purchase a rainbow of colours, but can also easily create your own custom shade. It can be glittery, matte, multicoloured, or provide a subtle background texture. We know this gallery will provide just the inspiration you need to start using texture paste for the first time (or expand your repertoire if you’ve already got some in your stash). Whether you make texture paste the main feature or use it as an added element, your next project is going to pop with paste!

A Hot Cup of Happiness Sometimes it seems like the success of our modern world balances on adequate intake of our favourite hot beverages—coffee and tea! They provide a pause in our day, something to accompany a little break. They create an excuse for friends to get together for a visit. They are a pick-me-up when energy is flagging and the jolt we need to get the day started. Coffee and tea have inspired poems, songs, and art… and this gallery pays homage to these life-giving beverages!

An Attitude of Gratitude with Allison Orthner SoulArt.ca

“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”

A study conducted by Harvard University concluded that people with an attitude of gratitude tend to be happier and less depressed. So how do we develop an attitude of gratitude? It takes intention. It takes practice. Try starting and ending your day with gratitude. Make an actual list of what you are grateful for. Review your list frequently. Pray and thank God for as many things as you can as often as you can. Try this Soul ART project, which combines most of the above, and see if you don’t feel an increase in happiness!

SOUL ART

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Allison Orthner Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Soul Art tissue, DecoArt Decoupage medium.

Figure 1 Basic Steps for this Soul ART project 1. Use assorted pens to fill the base with as many things as you can think of that you are grateful for (Figure 1). The key is to not stop writing until it is full, and repeat items if necessary in order to do that! 2. Carefully review what you wrote down, and select the ones that are the TOP of your list for what makes you grateful. Write or type those out, and cut into strips.

3. Find a sunflower or other flower you love (napkins work great!) and attach your gratitude list to the petals to serve as your daily reminder. Paint the remaining base, being sure to leave some of your original gratitude list showing through! Add extra quotes and embellishments, and then display it where you can review it often.

SOUL ART

I WILL THANK THE LORD Nadine Milton, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Zebra Pens.

Scraps of Info I love using the Zebra Pens Mildliner pens in my Bible as they work amazing for adding colour to my images! Because of the soft colours, they can be applied directly onto the surface and create a beautiful watercolour look. If you want even softer colour, add the colour and use a brush and water to blend out to create softer values. To create more contrast, go over your first layer of colour with a Mildliner of the same colour to create deeper values. These pens blend so easily together you only need a few colours to create a beautiful work of art!” ~ Nadine Milton

BE THANKFUL IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES Karla Yungwirth, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Zebra Pens, Simple Stories stickers and washi tape, Dress My Craft sequins.

MAKING BUBBLES WITH RANGER INK DISTRESS CRAYONS

1. On a non-stick craft mat, create a circle using a rainbow of colours from Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Crayons. I used candied apple, spiced marmalade, mustard seed, mowed lawn, and salty ocean. Slightly overlap each colour.

3. Dip a lid from a recycled container into the rainbow circle. Wiggle the cap just a little to make sure there is a good coat of colours on the lid. Stamp the lid on a piece of watercolour paper.

2. Once the rainbow circle is done, spritz generously with water to make the circle fully wet.

4. Use a watercolour pen to draw the colour out into the centre of the circle.

Fall will always be back-to-school season for me, so I decided to design a teacher card based on the wooden blocks I played with when I was a little girl. I don’t know about you, but I am still shocked to see anything from my childhood and teenage years labelled as vintage! You could also use this idea for a baby card, kid’s birthday, etc. This technique would make a great title for a scrapbook layout as well. Follow these steps to create these vintage blocks using watercolour paints and watercolour paper. You could also

use markers and coloured pencils on white cardstock or kraft paper. 1. Cut out small squares from watercolour paper. (Mine measure 1.5″ × 1.5″) 2. Paint ¼″ watercolour borders around each square. 3. Paint the interiors of each square block light brown. Let dry, and add a lined border with the same light brown along the border’s edges. 4. Use a pencil to sketch letters inside each block, and paint them with watercolour that match the borders. Let dry completely.

5. With the same light brown watercolour, paint horizontal lines across the brown squares, without touching the letters. 6. Let dry completely and then erase all pencil markings on the blocks. 7. Optional: Use a grey marker to add drop shadows on the letters for more dimension. 8. Adhere blocks to card base, and add embellishments if desired. I wrote “welcome” on another piece of coloured cardstock and placed this above the blocks.

MIXED MEDIA

Bleached Denim Journal Cover When it comes to working in mixed media, I go through my “collections” and select materials, products, and colours for the next project that suit my current mood. My go-to colours for fall are blue and gold—blue for the bright blue skies and gold for the harvest fields and sunflowers. I selected denim fabric to use for a journal cover and chose fabulous papers with a sunflower theme. I love handmade journals and often use copy papers and digital printables to make the signatures.

As a mixed media artist, I have an insatiable urge to add something to a product or alter it in some way. It could be distressing edges, building up a focal image with layers of tissues or vintage papers, using inks and watercolours, or adding visual texture to textiles. Bleaching on denim is a favorite technique and coffee staining the signature papers is a must. I can add stamping, stenciling, scrap clusters, and all sorts of processes as I work in the journal. “Save your scraps!” is a mantra of mine, and I can gather

them up to make clusters to adorn the edge of a page or to decorate a pocket. I look forward to adding photos, sketches, and dried flowers to my journal. The flexibility of the fabric cover will allow me to add thicker elements on the pages, such as flips, flaps, folds, layers, and more bleached scraps of denim. Make one for yourself to capture the beauty and blessings of the season. Happy fall, y’all!

BLEACH STAMPING ON DENIM

1. Gather your supplies - denim, stencils, stamp, bleach, Styrofoam

2. Prepare a stamping pad by using two sheets of paper towels

tray, paper towels, dauber with sponge, and something to protect your work surface.

cluster in your journal.

Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2023 81

STENCILING WITH BLEACH ON DENIM

1. Place the stencil on the denim journal cover. Press the dauber into the stamping pad to pick up a little bleach and pounce through the stencil. Remove stencil and wipe clean. Heat set the image.

2. Place the stencils back in place, and use a white gel pen to highlight the bleached image.

Scraps of Info When stamping with bleach, choose a stamp that has a solid element to catch as much bleach as possible for an effective image.

3. Get creative and add doodles. BLEACH STAMPING ON PAPER

Use the above techniques on different types of paper to produce patterned paper. The results will absolutely vary. Here I have bleach stamped on a piece of a kraft coloured paper bag. I love the results.

Scraps of Info Bleached designs can be added to blue jeans for a unique and creative fashion statement.

Whether a small detail or a main feature, stitching on your paper projects is a great addition. It adds texture and warmth while emphasizing important points. Stitching on paper is a modern connection to crafts of previous generations, adding a timeless element that blends old with new. It can also add whimsy and playfulness, as it does in Amy Cunniff-Bleau’s layout about her child’s trip to the dentist. There are some great products on the market that may help you dip your toes into the stitching pool (for example, note Emma Mills-Mumford’s use of a Spellbinders template). Or you can try out this trend simply by adding a line of stitching using your sewing machine, sewing by hand using embroidery threads, or adding an already-stitched element to your project. However, you wish to try this technique, this gallery will surely inspire you!

Card and Removable Ornament Tag Cathie Allan Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Art Impressions stamps and dies, Veracolor pigment ink, Tonic Studios Nuvo Crystal Glaze and liquid adhesive, Be Creative Sookwang double-sided tape, unknown beads, acetate, ribbon, foam tape, black marker, blending brushes and embossing powder.

Every year I take great delight in creating custom-made ornaments for my wonderful grandchildren. This year is no different, and I think I have come up with yet again one of my favourite ornaments. The deep, rich colours of the pigment ink that I chose to create the tag will definitely pop on the trees, and the swing-style design that is also a shaker is just plain old fun! The dies I used came from Art Impression Rubber stamps as well as their perfect “Frosty” slimline snowman that stands a full 5 1/4″ tall. This handsome Frosty image just begged to be 3D’d, adding another delightful component to this project.

As a bonus, I decided to create a matching Christmas card to go with each tag! The tag easily releases from the front of the card with a light bulb safety pin that adds a whimsical touch to the project. Absolutely everything was created with Tsukineko’s, Versacolor pigment ink, so I can trust that the card and tags from 2023 will look just as beautiful in 2073. AND I also took these very same ideas and turned them into a wonderful, “Frosty-approved” scrapbook page. I love sharing with you techniques that are transferable from the card, to a tag, to a scrapbook page, and or to your art journal.

If you happen to be a member of our VIP club on Facebook, we did this project as a class at the end of July. The cool thing about all the classes (and there are so many of them that have been done in this group) is that they are all recorded. If you want to take the class, treat yourself to an extra-special early Christmas present and become a member of this amazing club. Inspiration awaits you every single day.

Ah, Fall! The glorious season of change! The riotous growth and colours of summer give way to the gentler pace and temperatures of fall. The earth starts to prepare for rest, but not before giving up its bounty and filling our eyes and soul with a new vibrant palette. This seasonal show propels us to gratitude and gatherings as we complete the last of our harvests. School, activities, and routines begin anew, but time in nature is still sought after and cherished. Fall is the level-headed friend you seek out when life has been a little ‘extra’— that friend that has a coffee with you and assures you that for everything there is a season, and that change can be miraculous and beautiful! Enjoy our seasonal gallery filled with inspirational fall projects!

SKETCHES MAKE IT EASY Finding time to be creative can be challenging. Using prompts like a sketch can be the perfect way for you to feel accomplished, with minimal effort in the planning stages of your craft! With a sketch, all you have to do is play with pretty paper and reminisce, while working with your photos! TIP: If you are stuck in a routine of continually creating the same-sized paper crafting projects, try using a sketch for something different than what it may have originally been designed for. A 12″ × 12″ sketch can easily be adapted to many other sizes, like this month’s designers have done! We’ve asked two other paper crafting designers to share their projects inspired by this 12″ × 12″ sketch!

Sealed with a

Kiss

An attitude of gratitude is never out of place! Fred Rogers once said, “When I was a boy, and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” In other words, there is always someone to appreciate and be thankful for. You don’t have to be battered by life’s storms to look around and see that person: teachers, nurses, volunteers, servers, grocery store clerks, etc. Look after your community every single day. Wouldn’t everyone who lends a hand and helps out love to get a thank-you card like those found in our S.W.A.K gallery? Take some inspiration from these thankful examples and share your gratitude with someone!
