Hot chocolate in hand, cozy socks snuggling my feet, snowflakes falling—engage Christmas! I seriously can’t wait. To be honest, I am not sure what I enjoy more: the relaxing family time OR the getting ready. Decorating the house, making Christmas cards, looking on Pinterest for crafting ideas, planning a menu, attempting to bake (I am a terrible baker), walking around in the malls with a hot coffee enjoying the Christmas music, Christmas parties, AND Hallmark movies. Hands up if you are also a sucker for a sappy holiday romance. Just making this little list brings a smile to my face and warms my heart. This winter issue is full of smilemakers and heart-warming projects. Bethany Hoskin’s New View layout on page(45) really pulled at my heart strings. Watching and seeing your children transform before your eyes is such a gift we are given. Leona

10 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24

Derksen’s layout on page (48) shares the story of a loved one moving across the sea and choosing joy because missing would be too hard. This layout had me in tears. AND Genny Verbruggen’s layout on page (47) shares an absolutely adorable photo of her mom and Auntie Ann taking a selfie enjoying a milkshake! Those smiles warm my heart and remind me how good life is. We are so lucky to have a hobby to capture these special moments. Moments put on paper that will be remembered forever. Captured smiles, captured emotions, and so many stories. Christmas may only be once a year, BUT the joy that scrapbooking gives us all—well that, my friends, lives on forever! Enjoy all the little moments this holiday season. Big hugs!

Jackie

The Pull of Nostalgia SCRAPB C R E AT I VE

Our First Issue 2005

BOOKE R SPRING 2021

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. A longing for something that was. Sometimes I ask myself what exactly am I nostalgic for? Is it the events surrounding the early issues, or the innocence of starting something new, or the sheer exhilaration of seeing it take shape? Sometimes it is easy to understand. I am recalling specific people, fun times, or a few victories.

12 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24

How about you? What triggers your nostalgia? Think back. With whom did you watch Friends, and what comes to mind? If you watched the Barbie movie, did it bring back old memories? If not Barbie, what movies, people, or keepsakes trigger great memories? It’s the beauty of scrapbooking that keeps all this alive. Pull out your old albums and the shoebox holding old concert tickets, sports ribbons, Grandma’s necklace, and other memorabilia. Let the nostalgia wash over you. Where it takes you…that’s your next scrapping destination!

OUR

READERS’ SHOWCASE

Winter photographs are filled with pristine beauty, puff-bundled children, and evidence of activity, despite the blanket of snow covering our part of the planet. Nature has determined that winter should be a time of quiet, restoration, and rest; ever-restless humans have decided otherwise and only rest after enjoying the snow! Our readers have lavished us with a gallery of layouts covering a multitude of things to do outdoors—each one a testament to our enjoyment of icy entertainment. The quote attributed to Charles Dickens on Lorraine Melin’s layout says it best:

“Nature gives to every time and season some beauty of its own.” And indeed, that beauty has spilled over into our Heart and Soul gallery to give us enjoyment!

CONTRAST & PROXIMITY >

Christmas Sarah Wyles, Sherwood, Arkansas SUPPLIES: American Crafts cardstock, Fancy Pants Designs patterned paper, enamel dots and ephemera, Simple Stories patterned paper, brads and ephemera, Crate Paper Thickers, The Crafter’s Workshop Stencil Butter and watercolour.

2D versus 3D can be very effective in drawing the eye in. These decorative brads are the perfect addition.

The key to a visually interesting composition is using design principles such as proximity. Proximity is based on the nearness in space of elements. This works well here with the elements clustering in a band across the layout. And the negative space surrounding this band – at top and bottom – forces your eyes to focus on the contents.

The use of a handwritten note is a lovely balanced contrast with the decorative script typeface.

Proximity is further enhanced with various textured papers overlapping the tags below. The grouping of these on the right and left sides of the layout create a nice balance.

The black-and-white photo adds another level of contrast to the coloured papers; further enhancing the visual interest.

but first... let’s take a selfie Selfie (n)- a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media. Selfie entered the English language via Australia in the early 2000s, gaining popularity with the expansion of technology and social media; it made an official appearance in the Oxford dictionary in 2013, after being named the “Word of the Year.” Ten years after gaining official word status, selfies are as ubiquitous as ever! Selfie composition has become more creative and pleasing—including people and scenery to mark occasions. However, the best part about selfies is that family photographers can appear in pictures too. Enjoy this gallery celebrating the selfie!

HEART & SOUL CANDIES A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Visit Allison Orthner online AllisonOrthner.com

Figure 1

Puppy Portraits They grow up so fast—faster than our human babies! Although it varies from dog to dog and breed to breed, most puppies are considered fully grown by about a year! We BLINK, and they are no longer puppies!

In fact, I’m convinced puppies even grow and change overnight, so we need to have a plan to capture photos of them starting with the day you welcome them into your family. This is Ace (Figure 1). He is my son and daughter-in-law’s puppy, and I have been watching him grow like a weed and doing my best to capture it! Just like with a newborn baby, I suggest intentionally taking photos every week for the first month, and then at least once a month for the first year. And of course, a ton of random pictures in between! The goal is to document the dramatic changes and phases of your puppy’s first year!

52 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24

Figure 4+5 Figure 2

Figure 3

Here are some helpful tips when working with our furry friends!

3. Get down to their level. Try shooting from down low and even right on the ground to show life from their perspective (Figure 2).

1. Hire a professional photographer. Many photographers capture pets. Consider doing this at least once during your puppy’s first year, and make sure to get in some of the photos too!

4. Capture their personality. Are they super energetic or a little lazy? Do they tilt their head and look at you with big, sad eyes? Do they love to give you kisses? Freeze these moments in time through photos (Figure 3).

2. Avoid using a flash. Not only does a flash often result in green, glowing eyes (the equivalent of red eyes in humans), but it can also startle pets. Instead, shoot in natural light.

5. Play with a wide-angle lens. Wideangle lenses can distort in a fun way, so getting super close to Ace with my cellphone accentuated his cute face (Figure 4).

6. Try some fun filters. In Figure 5, I took the wide-angle photo of Ace and created a fun “Disney” cartoon of him using Fotor.com. There are a ton of fun filters online to play with. 7. Create a dedicated social media page for your puppy. Not everyone enjoys seeing so many pet photos, so consider starting a page just for your pet where those who want to can follow. Check out Ace’s Instagram page at acetheaustralian (see QR Code above). Finally, be sure to include puppy photos in your scrapbooks and memory books! They are truly family members worthy of being preserved as part our lives.

Stay Bold; Stay Gold

Wars have been fought for gold, and territories conquered because of it. Gold’s history is integral to the human experience; it honours excellence and denotes status and abundance. The gold standard signifies the very best a discipline has to offer, and this gallery featuring the colour gold is no exception. Gold is the perfect touch for important holidays and celebrations, extra special moments, and new beginnings. It’s no wonder these paper artists have chosen gold for their graduation, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations, or cards and warm-hearted memories. There is no fool’s gold here…only pure, gleaming goodness!

PUNCH OUT A BORDER WITH CREATIVE MEMORIES

1. Place red candy cane paper into Original Border Maker System paper tray. Insert the Candy Cane Stripe Border Maker Cartridge into the cartridge holder. Slide paper into the cartridge holder and punch; then slide the punch housing to the next notch on the guide. Continue until you’ve punched six times.

3. Use repositionable adhesive to adhere the double-punched border strip to a 2.75″ × 12″ piece of white cardstock to create the base for border.

5. Customize each Nutcracker by punching additional border strips from black cardstock and any other papers you wish to use. Use Micro-Tip Scissors to cut various bases, legs, shirts, and crowns from these extra border strips. Then use Repositionable Adhesive to layer and “dress” each Nutcracker. Adhere border strip to border base with Foam Squares.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

2. Remove punched paper and trim to 2.25″ in width. Rotate paper and place into Border Maker System paper tray as before. TIP: Use sticky notes to hold paper strip in place! Punch paper six times.

4. Insert beige cardstock into the Nutcracker Border Punch, aligning the edge with one of the black lines on the front of the punch. Punch, and then move the cardstock until the punched Nutcracker shape matches the picture of the Nutcracker printed on the base plate. Repeat four more times.

6. Use Tape Runner Adhesive to adhere a 10.5″ × 9.5″ rectangle and a 10″ × 9″ rectangle to the base page. Adhere completed border down the centre, and add two 3″ × 4″ photos on either side. Add embellishments and journaling to complete the layout.

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

Hand-LetteringHoliday Cards Lots of people think of hand-lettering as fancy writing or calligraphy. You don’t need perfect skills to hand-letter a holiday card. Making a card is always a personal gift of your time and creativity, so let’s add to your cardmaking toolbox by including your own writing in your designs.

72 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24

Here is an easy way to make “gift box” Christmas cards using cardstock, ribbon, and pens!

1. Gather your supplies: smooth cardstock; black, white, and red pens; ribbon; twine; adhesive; trimmer. 2. Choose a holiday phrase, and write it repeatedly on your cardstock, either straight across or diagonally. 3. You can also use more than one colour of pen. I added white highlights. 4. Tie a ribbon or twine around your paper like you would on a gift box.

5. Apply foam tape to the back of the cardstock. 6. Adhere your hand-lettering paper to a cardbase. You can use this technique to make your own gift tags too. I also had some fun creating tags by writing with an embossing pen and then heating embossing powder to create beautiful, shiny, raised lettering designs.

Nature’s Spirit Triptych There are many aspects of the cool winter months that I enjoy and look forward to, such as the crisp blue skies, the trees losing their leaves as they prepare for a chilly rest, the birds that stick around for our enjoyment, and freshly fallen snow to brighten the stark landscape, so I wanted to incorporate these elements into a project. I found it was easy to select the colours and

82 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24

textures for this grungy triptych, using black and white as a contrast to the blues and browns that I adore. Only two colours were used to create the triptych, along with heavy gesso. The tea bags I used soaked up the inks beautifully and gave a rusty appearance that I love. You can see each layer of grunge from the initial layer of paste to the focal imagery on each page. Creative use of stamps and

die cuts ground the project, and of course, I must have a circle, a metal element, and a number. This is just my thing. The three pages were created together as a whole, yet each one can be cut apart and framed, or made into a card for a dear friend. It’s easy creating through the seasons with nature as a muse. I hope you give it a try!

MIXED MEDIA

SCRAPS OF INFO Layering die cuts onto the background stamping gives depth and dimension to the project. This technique is especially well-suited to landscapes.

1. Create a triptych from watercolour paper measuring 6″ × 15″. Score at 5″ and 10″. Use a large palette knife to scrape a light coat of heavy gesso across the surface, leaving the edges clean. Inks dry lighter in colour when applied to gesso. The edges will be darker where there is no gesso, creating a beautiful frame to the page. Let dry.

3. Die cut out florals, circle, polaroid frame, and twigs from cardstock. Flatten your recycled tea bags. While the above panel is still wet, dip your recycled tea bags and die cuts onto the inky surface to pick up some of the colour. Set aside to dry.

2. Spray water lightly over the dried surface. Apply a small amount of Gathered Twigs Distress re-inker here and there to the surface, and spray with water and/or use a paintbrush to move the colour around. Puddles can be mopped up with a wad of Kleenex if needed. Spray open areas with Weathered Wood Distress Spray Stain. Repeat until you are happy.

4. Heat set the panel to dry. Then add splatters of water on the surface. After a few seconds, dab the water away to reveal a snowy texture. When happy with the results, heat set to dry.

Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24 83

MIXED MEDIA

5. Tear pieces of tea bag, and apply to the surface with matte medium in three areas: left side of the first page, off centre in the middle page, and along the bottom of the third page.

7.

Stamp a tree background in Jet Black Ranger Archival ink to the bottom of the third panel. Also stamp a bird at the edge of the tree line. Add scrapes of heavy gesso along the outer edges of the panels, and here and there where the background might need to be lighter. Let dry, and then repeat the gesso application, as the ink will absorb the gesso.

6. Use a texture stamp and Watering Can Ranger Archival ink to add background texture here and there.

SCRAPS OF INFO Here is a close up look of the gesso application applied in Step 7.

8. Stamp a quote on a piece of tea bag. Die cut birds, numbers, and twigs from black cardstock. Gather various embellishments from your stash. I used a twig, eco-dyed fabric, a cardboard circle made to look like rusted metal, a small safety pin, and a small brad.

9. Now decorate the panel set aside in Step 7, using elements from Step 3 and Step 8. Everyone’s will look different depending on what you gather from your stash. The sky is the limit.

Meet... Nicole INTRODUCING YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY

NICOLE MARTEL Crownsville, Maryland Hours scrapbooking: 2/week

~ Nicole’s Scrapbooking Tip ~ Invest in stencils, stamps, and metal dies. They will help make old supplies look new again. And they will save you a great deal of money, too, in the long run.

Q. Tell us a few things about you. N. I live in Crownsville, Maryland. I’ve always lived in Maryland, just different cities. I am married to my hubby of almost 20 years, and we have a teenage son who will be starting high school next year. I’m not ready for that… LOL Q. How did you get into scrapbooking and how long have you been doing it? N. Over 20 years ago, my mom talked me into going to a Creative Memories

party with her. I actually made fun of her for scrapbooking…but after going to that party, I was hooked! Q. What type of camera do you use? N. Nikon D7200. Q. Do you print your photos or get them printed? N. I print as I go to save on paper and ink. I use a Cannon Pixma on matte photo paper. Q. What inspires you? N. My crafty friends online inspire me

to try different techniques on a regular basis. Also, I look at patterns from paintings and clothing for color schemes and fun design ideas. Q. About how long did it take to create the above layout? N. Not long! The stencil work was a breeze with blending brushes. Once that was done, I matted the photo and added the embellishments. The entire layout took about 25 minutes.

THE ANTOMY OF A

Layout

CLUSTERING >

December Katherine Blue, Elkridge, Maryland SUPPLIES: Bazzill Basics Paper cardstock, Vicki Boutin patterned paper, stickers, chipboard and ephemera, Grabie paint, Sharpie markers.

Vertical elements often get seen as image first then message second.

98 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2023/24

Clustering combines items that have a similar story to tell into a group – of several groups – to create focus. It’s a way of creating visual interest. This layout does this very well. All the items of this adverture in December are grouped together to tell this story.

Pairing typefaces relys on contrast for the two to work. This is a good example of contrast in style and size.

This single “title” acts as such becuase it is treated differently than the main cluster of imagery.

Conceptual effects can be a great tool in complementing other elements. This splatter effect acts as “snow” without literally being snow.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Using the Christmas Tree die set, die cut your tree, using green patterned cardstock from the Holly Jolly Christmas paper pack as shown. Then die cut your reinforcer strip, using striped cardstock backed with double-sided adhesive. Use the ornament cutout to die cut ornament pieces from metallic kraft stock and red patterned cardstock backed with double-sided adhesive.

2. The base page pictured is die cut using the Tab 6 with Turnbutton Frame die set with cardstock from the Rustic Winter paper pack. Use the ornament cutout again on your green base tree. (This could also be done simultaneously when cutting out the tree.) Cut out your reinforcers using any black cardstock backed with double-sided adhesive, and adhere them to your reinforcer strip. 3. Using a fanned brush and your white acrylic paint diluted with a small amount of water, add splatter to your tree for a snow effect. For easy cleanup, set your tree in a recycled box before splattering.

4. Using a fine-tipped, clear-finish glue of your choice, glue your tree to the base page. Edge your reinforcer strip, tree, and base page with the frayed burlap distress ink, and then adhere to the page, decorating with ornaments as desired. 5. Using the Planner Essentials 54 set, cut out your belly band from red cardstock, and the Christmas tree seal in gold and green. Assemble as shown. Edge the band with the frayed burlap distress ink. Die cut your image with the Pocket Set Chevron Circle die, and back it with a gold ornament cut with any larger circle die, using glue. Hole punch the ornament, and apply your reinforcer. Then tie a red ribbon through the hole. Die cut your tag, edge with frayed burlap, and add a sentiment of your choosing. Then attach to the band, using twine. Adhere the band and ornament to the page as shown, and trim your band to fit. 6. Finally, apply double-sided adhesive to your black cardstock, and die cut “Christmas” using the Alphabet Tabs set. Die cut corresponding blank tabs from your gold paper, and then adhere your black letter cutouts to the gold tabs. Assemble to your page as shown, and enjoy your finished page!

SO MANY OPTIONS Winter has always been my favourite time to craft. On long, cold days you’ll find me hiding away in my creative space, reliving my family’s memories as I get them into albums. Sketches are a fabulous way to get several projects completed in a short time!

There are so many layout options in just one sketch, and with a little pre-planning, you can create countless pages based on one bit of inspiration!

Christmas Morning Jennifer Edwardson Duncan, British Columbia SUPPLIES: Simple Stories cardstock, patterned paper, journal Bits & Pieces, stickers and die cuts, American Crafts Thickers 3D foam squares and cardstock, Heidi Swapp date stamp, Close To My Heart ink, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L tape runner, Art Glitter liquid adhesive.

START WITH A SKETCH

To begin, get out a paper crafting kit or a collection of products with all the coordinating pieces, and then lay out multiple bases with your photos and a few embellishments on top. With a little organization, you will complete so many more pages with one sketch. Though you may not finish them all in one crafty session, you’ll be ready to go the next time you sit down to create! I hope that you make time to scraplift these (3) different-sized layouts based on the same 12″ × 12″ Sketch!
