~ S D A O R OPEN S D N I M N OPE
Remember your last road trip? I am suggesting it’s time for your next one. Set a direction. Pull in a friend or two. Let conversation, and your mind, wander the four corners of the universe. There is something about getting away, a little adventure, and the right company that really puts my creativity into top gear. I know I am not alone on this. In March, Jackie and I hit the road in New Orleans for the annual CREATIVATION BY NAMTA* show. For the crafting industry, this is our Grand Canyon, our Niagara Falls, our Rockies… very road trip-worthy. As co-founders, it’s often hard for us to get away together, so being footloose together for three days was a gift.
CREATIVATION was a goldmine. We saw new releases and enjoyed live demos from the paper crafting companies. We connected with current partners and set up exciting new relationships. My favorite part was bumping into store owners who were eager to tell us what they had just seen and learned. Throughout the event, Jackie and I collected ideas and fed off the creative energy of those around us. I think it is true, open roads – open minds. The weather is nice… so grab a friend and visit a few craft stores. Find your road. Get inspired!!

Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024 39
Apparently, I am a Kool-Aid hoarder. I was cleaning out one of the small drawers we all have in our kitchens that serve as a catch-all for random stuff, and I found a whole bunch of packets of unsweetened Kool-Aid. I used to make Kool-Aid occasionally when my kids were small, but unsweetened KoolAid became largely unavailable in Canada a number of years ago. The disappearance from my grocery store aisle caused me to pick up multiple packets when I was visiting the United States, as well as to buy more online – just in case. Now, of course, nobody in my house drinks Kool-Aid anymore. Rather than just tossing out all of the old drink packets, I took a bunch to a weekend scrapbook crop and challenged myself to use Kool-Aid in creative ways. It turns out you can use Kool-Aid for a number of different things while paper crafting, and the bonus is that your workstation smells delicious! You are limited to a small colour selection, but it’s still fun.
40 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024
Here’s what I did with my unsweetened Kool-Aid powder. Sweetened powder would not work. I recommend that you wear gloves to avoid staining your fingers, and also be sure to protect your work surface. • Dissolve some Kool-Aid with a small amount of water in a shallow pan and use it to dye paper, ribbon, lace, cheesecloth, and other odds and ends. I love the look of Kool-Aid-dyed book paper. The less dilute your solution and the longer your item sits in the dye bath, the more intense the colour. • Dissolve some Kool-Aid in alcohol in a small mister bottle to create a spray alcohol ink. • Dissolve Kool-Aid in a very small amount of water (less than a teaspoon) and use it to watercolour a stamped image or dab through a stencil. • Sprinkle Kool-Aid crystals on watercolour paper and spritz lightly with water for small bursts of colour. • Mix it into texture paste or gesso, and to add colour.

We Love the Shapes of Things!
Let’s take a little tour through the world of cognitive psychology, where there are many theories on how things are learned, remembered, and made sense of – even in unique circumstances. One of the things we rely on for learning is to recognize patterns and shapes, and how they fit together to become things we know. For example, we know a vase to be a vase because it is a hollow cylinder. We know a vase even if we have not seen its size, curve variation, or colouration. This little tour is to say that we love patterns – especially repeating patterns! They are familiar and comforting, but also interesting in their variety. You can change the geometric shape, the colour, or any other variables, but the foundation of our understanding of the world around us is based on knowing patterns, and so they are pleasing to our sensibilities. This is absolutely true of our feature gallery, filled with all kinds of shapes and patterns, and we know you are going to love looking at them! 44 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024

CREATING BACKGROUNDS AND EMBELLISHMENTS WITH PIGMENT INK
1. Die cut the Pink & Main leaf die from heavy cardstock to create a stencil. With a blending foam, pounce umber ink through the stencil on a white piece of cardstock. Remove the stencil and blend the colour slightly around the stenciled images with a blending brush.
3. Repeat Step 2 using green tea ink. Let the background panel dry.
5. To colour the stamped images, work in small sections. Using your finger, rub some clear embossing ink on the image to keep it wet. Dip the eyeliner brush in the ink and outline the wet section. Use the Fantastix brush to blend the ink. Colour the petals with lagoon blue ink and the leaves with split pea ink. Let it dry.
2. Repeat Step 1 using split pea ink. Be sure to have some stenciled images going off the page.
4. Stamp the Pink & Main floral stamp with VersaFine ink on white heavy cardstock.
6. Die cut out the florals with coordinating Pink & Main dies. Apply Nuvo Crystal Drops on all the flowers. Let it dry. Add a drop of white Crystal Drops in the flower centers. Let it dry.

Seasons of Life - Summer with Allison Orthner SoulArt.ca
“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”
76 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024
Gosh, I love summer! Both the actual season of warm sunny days, but also the season of life when we are growing and thriving emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually! My challenge, however, is to be mindful of paying it forward in my “summer” season, especially to those stuck in “winter.” Summer, as a season of life, is a beautiful time and should be relished, but it is also a time where we are in a better place to share love and hope with others struggling.
THE SEASON OF FULL BLOOM Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Soul ART tissues, DecoArt Decoupage Matte Medium, unknown acrylic paints.
SCRAPS OF INFO I had a dream one night that resulted in this Soul ART project! SUMMER SCRAPBOOKING, YES PLEASE. Summer tends to be a quiet crafting time for many of us as we are outside enjoying the sunshine and making memories to put into albums when the weather changes... But, every once in a while, it’s nice to sit down and get a few pages made while the stories are still fresh in our minds! A good grid layout is a super quick and easy way to get several photos onto a page with minimal time or preplanning. Grids are amazing, look lovely, and you can create them using all sizes of photos. You can create a 12”x 12” single page, turn it into a double with other photo sizes (shown here with 4”x 6” pics), or even drop it down to an 8 ½”x 11” page featuring 2”x 2” photos! There are so many options . . . have fun with this sketch and be sure to TAG US @csmscrapbooker as we love to see what you create!!

A YEAR TO REMEMBER
By Dooreen Rousseau
• MIXED MEDIA • Let Your Dreams Blossom Dooreen Rousseau
Edmonton, Alberta SUPPLIES: Simple Stories Vintage Spring Garden patterned paper, rub-ons and ephemera, Liquitex black paint, Studio by Katia foam tape, trims and textiles, Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Bearly Art craft glue, Ranger Tim Holtz Distress ink, Tim Holtz Idea-ology tiny clip, Elizabeth Craft Designs die, unknown woven gauze, muslin fabric scraps, stained tea bags, washi tape, homemade vintage tape pieces.
SCRAPS OF INFO When choosing patterned papers, I look for neutral patterns, sheets with cut-away panels, and a solid element. Ephemera bits & pieces also help with additional layering.
Summer Bloom I love Gerbera Daisies, and when I came across a couple of photos, I knew I wanted to use them on a journal page I was working on. I wasn’t sure how I was going to use them, so I started by making a cluster. I fell instantly in love. While flipping through the Simple Stories Vintage Garden collection of patterned papers, I just had to do something with all the yummy floral
86 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024
backgrounds. I trimmed a journal page from one of the patterned papers and used the cluster as a focal point. Wait a minute! Wouldn’t that journal page look awesome mounted onto a second 12” x 12” sheet of patterned paper? It already had a focal cluster and yes, indeed, it looked great. All I had to do was select a couple more photos and include a journal card to complete the layout.
I now had a cluster, made into a journal page, and used that page as a focal image for a layout. Amazing! If you have misplaced your mojo, go through your photos and scraps and make clusters. It might be just the thing to inspire you to create, and it’s a great scrapbuster! I hope you try it!
MIXED MEDIA
1. Create a Cluster Start with die cutting a photo frame from a designer sheet of paper. Select a photo to use inside the frame. Select a quote from one of the sheets and trim it to fit on the bottom of the frame. Layer a torn strip of muslin and gauze underneath. Staple them together and glue them in place. Begin layering behind the frame to expand the size of the cluster, while giving it some light layers. Tea bag scraps, a music sheet, and ephemera, can be torn and glued behind the frame. A ‘skirt’ of layers can be added below the frame using drywall and washi tape for contrast. Fussy cut a butterfly ephemera piece and glue it to a corner with a scrap of gauze behind it. Edge all elements lightly with Ranger tea dye ink. Bits of stained tape can be added here and there to continue the vintage vibe.
2. Create a Journal Page Cut the needed size of your journal page from one of the floral sheets in the collection. Ink the edges and splatter it lightly with diluted black paint. Let it dry. Add texture to the edges by using segments of the rub-on pack, keeping it loose and airy. Fussy cut the yellow butterfly from another sheet of paper and adhere it to the opposite side of the florals. The cluster will fit perfectly slightly off-center on the journal page.
Add a small, scrappy cluster to the top right of the journal page using ephemera from the Simple Stories collection, a metal paperclip, and some muslin and cheesecloth.
Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024 87
3. Adhere the Journal Page to the Background of the Layout Using a second sheet of patterned paper from the collection, orient the journal page on top. Distress and ink the edges of the background paper. Add more rub-ons in a few places along the edge.
4. Create an Accordion Mini Album for Journaling Cut a strip of tags from the patterned paper, score it, and fold it into an accordion shape. This will work great as a journal card. The layered photo mats will be 3” x 3”, cut from heavy Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock and layered onto designer paper. Frame the album with a slightly larger tag, cut from coordinating patterned paper. Add a clip to the edge to keep the accordion closed. Add the photos to the photo mats and embellish them with items like muslin, ephemera, gauze, etc.
5. Layer all the elements onto the layout using 3D foam tape. Ta da!
88 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2024
SCRAPS OF INFO Keep it simple when making clusters. Grab two or three neutral items that can go with just about any colour or pattern. I like the vintage look, so I chose to use eco-dyed muslin fabric scraps, unbleached gauze (cheesecloth), and tea bags on each of the elements on the layout. These items give great layering without adding too much bulk, and it works well from a composition standpoint.
THE ANTOMY OF A
Layout
CREATE A FOCAL POINT >
Gone Fishing DIGITAL LAYOUT Trina Jones, Innisfail, Alberta SUPPLIES: Lazy River kit by Grace Lee, Black Sheep Page Draft by The Nifty Pixel, Photoshop CC.
Woodgrain provides the perfect trim to this outdoorsy layout.
This cluster of layered florals creates a dynamic focal point for this layout. It works particularly well because it combines many different textures together. And the pairing of the signage with fishing rod is the perfect touch. The cluster draws your eye into the key message. Well done!
Real photo strips help to tell the story.
This soft, water-like background provides the perfect contrast to the cluster of florals and the strips of image above.
A softer colour palette on this cluster provides balance to the layout, but does not overpower the main focal point of the layout.

Repetition of shape can be a very effective tool in creating uniformity – even when the elements are scattered. The eye naturally connects all similar shapes together as one whole image.

Real 3D elements combined with flat 2D elements also add to the overall impact of the layout.

Colours Inspired BY Azure Blue
Sea Blue
Greece
Photos taken in Greece are instantly recognizable with their white buildings, blue sea and skies, and bright sunshine. Have you ever wondered why there is such uniformity along the Greek Islands’ shores? For practical reasons, many of the buildings are made from stone, a material that is naturally much darker. By painting them white, it saves them from becoming oppressively hot under the Mediterranean sun. Historically, an important reason for the whitewash colour may surprise you: the limestone used in the whitewash is a natural disinfectant! It became popular and necessary during a cholera outbreak in the 1930’s as one of the only means available for infection control. At one point, using white and blue on buildings was required by law as a means of expressing national pride; even the Greek flag is blue and white. Those rules are no longer in effect, but so many people have chosen to keep that colour scheme. The beautiful white buildings with blue and orange accents now have become a draw for tourists. You don’t need to take a trip to Greece to enjoy this wonderful colour palette. It’s well-suited to all manner of summer photos, but also feels celebratory, warm, and welcoming!

The Sandy Days of Summer
One of my favorite places to be during the summer is on a beach! There's nothing quite like the feeling of sand between my toes with the view of the water before me (Figure 1)! It’s even better with loved ones beside me and a camera close by to capture the memories!
Some of my all-time favorite memories and photos come from times at the beach! From captivating sunsets to unfortunate mishaps, the resulting images trigger some epic memories! I will never forget the fiery sunset in Kauaʻi, during a photography excursion with a beautiful group of ladies (Figure 2), or the time I accidentally dunked my camera in the ocean while trying to splash my friend Christy, all while my husband captured the sordid ordeal (Figure 3)! The resulting images of these varied experiences now trigger smiles, sighs and bouts of laughter, along with the memories. This is exactly why we take pictures!

Spring heralds a return to colour as Earth sheds her sparkling white shroud and invites greener pursuits. LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Figure 4
As I reflect back on my own life, I think another reason I love the sandy days of summer is because it brings back nostalgic memories of my own childhood with my parents and brothers, playing together and enjoying vacations away from the regular routines of home (Figure 5). There is something deeply comforting about revisiting my childhood photos and knowing we created the same types of memories for our kids. Through our photos and scrapbooks, they too will one day look back fondly and smile, laugh and reminisce about their childhoods and all their sandy days of summer. Figure 5

Canada & US Celebrations
It’s perfectly fitting that as next-door neighbors, Canada and the United States have neighbouring days to celebrate our countries with pride and patriotism. July 1st and 4th echo with parade music, barbeques, fireworks, and expressions of national delight. These national holidays allow for raucous and exuberant gatherings, as well as somber acknowledgements of the price paid for nation-building. We celebrate with the understanding that our nations are strengthened by shared history, growth, inclusivity, and making sure that every person matters. Everyone, together, makes our nations great! Now that is something worth celebrating!

CATHIE’S CHOICE
When I want to get carried away with stamped embellishments on a project that I also want customcoloured, I turn to a very quick and easy colouring technique that I have developed using my favorite pigment ink markers. For these projects, I used FaberCastell Pitt Artist pigment ink pens. I worked on Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, as it works beautifully with this technique. Next, I used an extender. An extender keeps the pigment marker wet longer, making it crazy easy to blend. The extender that I used was clear embossing ink from Tsukineko. I always have a re-inker handy to keep the ink pad nice and juicy.
Happy Birthday Card/ Frame Cathie Allan, Stoney Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock cardstock, Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stamps, Sizzix Tim Holtz coordinating dies, Faber-Castell Pitt Artists pigment markers, VersaColor pigment ink, Tuskineko clear embossing ink, clear embossing powder and Fantastix blending tool, Zig markers, Tooli-Art paint pen, JudiKins clear acetate, 3D foam adhesive, unknown ribbon.
SCRAPS OF INFO Cathie has used her quick and easy colouring technique to colour all the Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stamped florals on this incredible card. The card folds flat, and then bounced up to be a window card frame. How cool is that?
I applied a layer of embossing powder to a section of the floral stamped image using my finger (yes, it's my best applicator). Then, I added some pigment ink from the marker and blended the ink using a Tsukineko Fantastix blending brush. This technique allows me to achieve multiple shades of colour with just one marker.
The fabulous floral rubber stamps I chose for these projects came from Stampers Anonymous in two different sizes – isn’t that a happy thing?! They also came with coordinating dies to make the process even easier! You too can be a colouring rebel when you employ this fun, easy technique. I assure you it will make colouring fun again and, dare I say, much more economical. So go crazy… make dozens of embellishments for that page or for that card, or for any paper project that you are working on.

Birthdays are celebrations of the people that are important to us. It’s a chance to express gratitude for having them in our lives, to acknowledge growth and accomplishments over the past year, and to send good wishes for the year to come. In previous generations, birthdays were not as significant as they are today, with many people not even knowing the exact day of their birth. We are grateful to live in a time where we mark this occasion, deepening our connections with one another. And so we celebrate the humble birthday card - the perfect vessel for our thoughts and wishes for our loved ones! This gallery will inspire you with its multitude of wishes for birthday happiness!

The Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Village of Inspired People online community is filled with creativity, camaraderie, and learning opportunities! Combining monthly Zoom crops with industry experts, fun events like the Angel Birthday Card Exchange, and engaging monthly classes adds a vibrant and supportive environment for members to connect and grow their skills. The enthusiasm and sense of belonging are evident in the beautiful cards shared for Sienna Day's birthday and the excitement of Yuko Neal preparing for a class. We love it when new friendships form as a result of our community; Yuko Neal and Debra Ruffing shared a photo from a brunch they enjoyed while browsing through the Spring issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. Our community is a special place to be!
