Glitter, Relaxation, and Creative Vibes: Welcome to Our Carnival Spa Day!

Spring has sprung, and you know what that means around here— it’s CARNIVAL TIME! 🌟 This year, we’re celebrating 18 incredible years of creativity with a delightful twist—our Carnival theme is SPA DAY! Get ready to unwind, rejuvenate, and indulge in a world of creativity that’s as refreshing as a deep tissue massage… but with glitter. Calgary, Alberta April 11-12, 2025 Edmonton, Alberta May 23-24, 2025 Visit CreativeScrapbooker. ca/Great-CanadianScrapbook-Carnival

10 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2025

For us, a Carnival isn’t just an event; it’s the heartbeat of spring. It’s where paper crafters, memory keepers, and creative spirits unite for the ultimate celebration. Picture bustling booths brimming with the latest crafting goodies, inspiring makeand-takes to spark your imagination, and hands-on mixed media demos that’ll have your creative juices flowing faster than a bubbling hot spring. It’s shopping galore, with every crafty treasure you didn’t know you needed at your fingertips—heaven for paper crafters like us! This year’s SPA DAY theme makes it all the more magical. Think of it as a retreat for your creative soul. Relax, unwind, and let the soothing vibes of crafting recharge your energy. From learning new techniques to making connections that last a lifetime, you’ll leave feeling creatively refreshed and inspired. And don’t forget to visit the photo booths for those perfect memory snaps—what’s a spa day without a few fun selfies? Whether you grab a spot to craft all day or stroll through the Carnival to explore make-and-takes, shop, and mingle, there’s something for everyone. And let’s talk about those goodie bags… WOWZERS! Packed with fabulous products from our amazing sponsors, they’re a treat you won’t want to miss.

Through the years, these Carnivals have been about more than just crafting. They’ve been about friendships forged over glitter, laughs shared over silly costumes, and memories made in the company of kindred creative spirits. This year, we’re ready to pamper our creativity and yours—because nothing feels better than recharging with the people and projects we love. Mark your calendars for April and May, and join us for a Carnival experience like no other. Come relax, craft, shop, and create memories that will last long after the glitter settles. Can’t wait to see you there!

Jackie

THE ANATOMY OF A

Layout

“REAL” TEXTURE >

EASTER DIGITAL LAYOUT Amie Wheeler, Spokane, Washington

The “illusion” of a real substrate – in this case wood planks – can be quite alluring as a background texture. It provides a good contrast between the photographs and pieces of paper ephemera.

SUPPLIES: Just Jaimee digital kit, Designed by Soco digital template, Adobe Photoshop.

Note: A digital layout opens the door to other tools and materials. Things that may not be as accessible or practical can now be possible. Think wood, brick, concrete, metal...

Fun Fact:

30 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2025

Decorating Easter eggs is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century. In Germany, there's an Easter tradition called the "egg dance," where people place eggs on the floor and dance around them, trying not to break any.

Perfecting your Projects with Pastes One of the most engaging things about paper crafting is the breadth of tools at our disposal. You can create memory heirlooms using only foundational supplies like pictures, paper, adhesive, and a journaling pen. But you can also incorporate an endless array of tools, mediums, and techniques to add visual interest and layers of meaning to your projects. This gallery showcases crackle paste—a medium that you can use on its own or with stencils to create a weathered, textured finish on paper. It gives an instant aging effect and pairs nicely with heritage or rustic photos. Notice the examples of how crackle paste subtly adds character and depth! Linda Smith’s ‘Fun in the Sun’ layout showcases crackle paste with a twist—it echoes the texture of surf and sand in a beautiful, beachy location.

CATHIE’S CHOICE

Here in Canada, after a cold and snowfilled few months, it feels so right to welcome spring with a fun, easy, and interactive card project designed to encourage someone special. Interactive cards can sometimes feel daunting, but this one is refreshingly simple to assemble. Better yet, it’s the perfect excuse to put some of your favorite Dare 2B Artzy stamps to work. Because let’s face it—that’s where the joy comes from, right? Stamping is all about creating unique backgrounds and standout focal points for your paper projects.

For this card, the tiny solid floral stamp worked its magic to craft a charming background, while the playful bicycle design stole the spotlight as the focal point. The Dare 2B Artzy stamp set I used also comes with a matching steel die, making fussy cutting a breeze— no fuss, just speed and precision! To add an extra layer of interest and dimension, I incorporated some beautiful washi tape from Serenity Fair. Washi tape is such a versatile crafting tool, and this project showcases yet another fun way to use it.

But why stop at cards? This spring, challenge yourself to expand your ideas into a scrapbook layout. Anything you can create as a card can be translated into a larger format for embellishing a cherished photo. Personally, I can’t wait to adapt this project into a layout featuring some of my favorite cycling photos of my daughters, who are avid cyclists. In my ‘stamping mind’s eye’, I can already picture how stunning it will look. So gather your supplies, embrace the season, and let your creativity bloom. Happy spring, my friends—enjoy every moment of it!

How to Photograph Your Layouts

Visit Allison Orthner online AllisonOrthner.com

Figure 1 You’ve spent hours of creative energy and, let’s face it, a decent amount of money creating beautiful layouts that you hope will be treasured for generations to come! But what if you have more than one family member you wish to share them with? Or what if tragedy strikes and your scrapbooks are lost in a flood or fire? Because each layout is a work of art created with heart, I strongly encourage everyone to also create digital versions of each.

Photographing your treasured layouts will give you more opportunities to share them with family and friends, plus it will ease your mind should the originals ever get lost or damaged.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Figure 2

Figure 4

Here are my DIY tips to capturing good photos of your layouts! 1. Use natural lighting. Good lighting is critical! Set up by natural, indirect light from an outside window (Figure 2). 2. Use a white backdrop. Place your layout on a larger piece of white paper and add another white paper to reflect light back on the layout (Figure 3). If you have a white wall or wish to prop up the white paper, simply attach the layout using tape (Figure 4).

Figure 3

Figure 5

3. Adjust camera settings. For SLRs, use F/5.6 aperture and shutter speed around 1/125th, then adjust the ISO until the exposure looks good for your light. If you don’t own an SLR, using a cell phone should also work great! 4. Shift your angle. Position your camera to be shooting perfectly parallel with the layout, not angled or skewed (Figure 5a and 5b). Get in close but leave an inch or two of white around the layout.

5. Check the focus. Exposure, white balance, cropping, and other factors can all be adjusted later (especially with RAW files), but “there is no cure for blur!” Once you have your DIY set up, you can simply rinse and repeat with as many of your layouts as you desire! And don’t forget to send Creative Scrapbooker some of your favourites to be considered for publication!

STAMPING A HOLOGRAPHIC BACKGROUND

1. Stamp the Unity Stamp onto a piece of kraft cardstock using pigment ink. Emboss with black embossing powder. The embossed lines create a barrier, making it easy to stay within the lines while watercolouring.

3. Place the panel under a piece of clean, thin paper. Use a dry iron over the entire surface to remove the raised embossed edges. This prepares the surface for adding more layers.

5. Heat set the panel to secure the ink or air dry.

2. Paint the background using Lindy’s Gang Magical Shakers pigment powders. Allow it to dry completely.

4. Position a stencil over the panel and, using a foam applicator, pounce white pigment ink onto the design.

6. Stamp the Unity Stamp floral image across the entire background using copper-coloured pigment ink. This step creates the stunning holographic effect. Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2025 57

DISTRESS WATERCOLOUR PENCILS COLOUR BLENDING

1. Stamp the large leaf image using Ranger Archival Jet Black ink. Stamp directly onto your card, tag, or layout, and then stamp the same image onto a separate piece of scrap paper.

3. Using a freshly damp Q-tip, lift colour from the Distress Watercolor Pencil in Fossilized Amber. Layer this yellow shade over the blue leaves to create a vibrant green tone. The combination of yellow, blue, and green adds depth and dimension to the leaves.

2. Use the Distress Watercolor Pencil in Prize Ribbon to begin blending. If you don’t have a small paintbrush, a damp Q-tip works well. Lightly wet the Q-tip and pick up colour from the tip of the watercolour pencil. Apply a base layer of blue to each leaf.

4. Carefully cut out the stamped and coloured leaf from the scrap paper, trimming closely around the image. Add Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L 3D Foam Squares to the back of the cut-out leaf to create a dimensional effect. Layer the popped-up leaf over the corresponding stamped image on your project for added texture and interest.

HEART & SOUL CANDIES A YEAR TO REMEMBER

My Crisis of Faith

with Allison Orthner SoulArt.ca

“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”

76 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2025

I woke up one morning with a fully rhyming poem in my head. I could barely get pen to paper fast enough even though I was still in bed (I always keep paper and pens beside me). When I was done, I couldn’t believe what had just happened and began to cry. Why? Because it was the proof I had been asking God for. I just didn’t expect it to come in the form of a poem given to me while I slept.

SOUL ART

I was in my mid 30s having a crisis of faith. I was raised in a loving Christian family, but suddenly found myself questioning everything— even the existence of God. I was quickly descending into a dark place of doubt and feeling very lost. During this ‘dark night of the soul’, I challenged God. I told Him that He needed to show up, answer my questions and prove His existence if He wanted me to believe in Him. In His grace and loving patience with me, He answered. This poem, given to me while I slept, was the first in a series of miracles over the course of the next week that brought me firmly back into His arms and resecured my faith.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I found a beautiful painting by Angel Ashleigh called “The Light of Life” and instantly felt it was the perfect image to match my poem from God. Together it is a powerful message of how Jesus leads us out of the darkness back into the light of His love.

Angel Ashleigh is an artist inspired to create beautiful paintings that portray assorted aspects of her faith. She was inspired to create this piece based on John 8:12, where Jesus declares, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." SCRAPS OF INFO “Despite never been artistic, God nudged me to pick up a paintbrush in 2019 during a time of deep grief over the loss of my Daddy and challenges of being a single Mom during Covid’s isolation. Through being brutally honest with God about my anger and pain, God led me to paint assorted angel wings which brought peace, joy and hope! I later discovered the verse in Psalm 91, “Under His feathers you’ll find refuge,” which has become the foundation of my new business–painting wings on jackets and hoodies in hopes of spreading the message to all who need it.” ~ Melissa Merrick

Transform Your Projects with Creative Layers Who would think that unassuming pieces of plastic with holes cut into them could offer enduring versatility? They are tough enough to last, and diverse enough that once you have one, you need to have them all! They offer quick additions of colour, pattern, and texture, boosting the interest of any project they land on. The introduction of layered stencils changed the game again, leveling up complexity and possibilities; you can see Emma Mills Mumford’s beautiful example of this with her ‘You Are So Important to Me’ card. Look through the stencil gallery and see how our contributors have used stencils to emphasize themes, complement photo colours or add texture and interest to projects. The possibilities are endless!

THE ANATOMY OF A PATTERN >

SPRING DIGITAL LAYOUT Amie Wheeler, Spokane, Washington

Layout

Patterns can come in many forms but what they do have in common is repetition. Patterns are comprised of repeated elements. Sometimes they are predictable and organized, and sometimes they are more organic in their design. Here, we have both. The left is an example of an asymmetric, organic- looking pattern and the right is very rigid.

Patterns can make for great “wallpaper.” By that we mean they function well as a background to create texture. And, they can help to draw your eye to a particular element such as we see here in the sun.

SUPPLIES: LJS Designs and Misty Cato digital kits, Adobe Photoshop.

Scraps of Info Amie Wheeler’s layout shines bright with sunrays crafted from patterned paper! Each strip adds texture, colour, and personality, perfectly framing the photos while celebrating the fresh energy of spring.

What a weekend it was! Attendees from around the world gathered with ELIZABETH CRAFT DESIGNS for their annual Rocky Mountain Creative Retreat at the end of October in beautiful Banff, Alberta. It was truly a holiday to remember! We loved seeing the partners of attendees thoroughly entertained by Joep, husband of Els Van De Burgt, as they explored the stunning National Park and even caught a hockey game in Calgary. Don't miss out on the magic— visit www.ecraftdesigns.com and sign up for their newsletter (Contact Us page) for details on their 2025 retreat (Oct. 24th to Oct. 29th, 2025). Make it a holiday you'll never forget!

SCRAPPY CHIC IN LIVONIA Michigan was buzzing with excitement on December 5th during a wonderful celebration honoring Michele Kosciolek’s feature in our WINTER 2024/25 issue! A big shoutout to Renee for hosting such a memorable party!
