LETTER FROM THE EDITOR JACKIE LUDLAGE
SCRAPS OF INFO While designing the layout in our Free Crafty Projects section (page 80) Cathie fell in LOVE with the background technique she created and the process so much that she turned it into a fabulous card with an acrylic window! LA LA LOVE IT!
It’s a card! It’s a scrapbook layout! How about BOTH?
THANK YOU Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Pergamano Vellum, Atenew 3D embossing folder, Impression Obsession stamps, VersaFine and VersaColor pigment ink, Faber-Castell Pitt Artist pens, Zig Marker, Sookwang double-sided adhesive, Clearsnap hard tip foam applicators, Tooli-Art paint pen, Judikins window plastic, unknown ribbon.
10 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024
Cathie Allan has been a member of the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine team for almost 16 years! WOWZERS! She is one of our OG’s (original gangsters). And since I am throwing around cool slang, I would also consider Cathie a G.O.A.T (GREATEST OF ALL TIME). Cathie is without a doubt an absolute G.O.A.T. and a fountain of knowledge when it comes to paper, ink, and stamps! She can do things like you have never seen before! One of the zillion things that Cathie has taught me throughout the years is that it doesn’t matter if you consider yourself a card maker or a scrapbooker or an art journaler etc., when you look at a project, no matter what it is, create a frame shape with your hands
and look through the frame at a section of the project you love. Focus on just that section. BOOM! There is the foundation for a card! BOOM! There is a section for your next art journal page. BOOM! There is a cluster for your next scrapbook layout! And on and on and on. Inspiration for your next creation, no matter what the medium, can be found in any project! You need only look through your built-in picture frame! No matter your creative preferences, I challenge you to look at the pages of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine through your “picture frame.” Look a little closer. Look a little longer! The ideas for your next project will double, maybe even triple! And that is what we are here for! Happy hunting, my friends.

Let’s Get STEAMY! Steampunk style is reminiscent of an earlier age where mechanical inventions were newfangled and cutting edge—back to a time when people were discovering how things worked and how to manufacture more things that work. Identified by mechanical elements, muted colours, and layers of texture, steampunk style is fun, grungy, and a favourite—but not exclusively for masculine projects. There is no such thing as “too much” when you are playing with steampunk motifs; add another layer, add more texture, add more shading, add another embellishment! Add to your heart’s content; steampunk is the opposite of a clean and simple approach to paper crafting, and we are here for it! 32 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Use the Ornate Butterfly die set to die cut the butterfly outline from a used tea bag, and the ornate butterfly wing overlay from cream cardstock. Then cut the butterfly body from black cardstock. Edge the wing overlay with frayed burlap and glue it to the tea bag cutout. Then glue the butterfly body on top. Trim the body in half, so the edge is a straight line.
5. Stamp the script pattern from the Script from the Past set onto the torn edge piece. This can be done without a stamp block by pressing with your hands. Follow the same steps to emboss. Stamp the Journal Phrases 3 stamp set on cream cardstock, and cut out your desired sentiments. Edge everything with frayed burlap. Add embossing to the edge of your journal page and butterfly wing as desired.
2. Die cut the journal page from the Abandoned Papers paper pack, using the notebook journal page from the Torn die set. Then fold your page in half. Die cut the torn edge piece from Abandoned Papers, the rectangle ATC card from a neutral cardstock of your choosing, and the small note piece from book paper.
6. Incorporate some aged and torn book pages as desired, and glue them to your journal page. Stamp stitching from the Stitched Border stamp set over the book pieces. Add more stitching to the ATC card. Assemble as shown, being sure to add glue only to the butterfly body and not the wing for a three-dimensional look.
3. Using a stamping platform, stamp the pattern from the Script from the Past stamp set onto your journal page. 4. Place a tray and coffee filter below your page for easy cleanup, and then pour gold embossing powder over the stamp while still wet. Brush off in places, using a soft brush to reveal the black ink below. Heat the embossing powder with your embossing tool to cement.

MIXED MEDIA BACKGROUND USING DISTRESS CRAYONS AND STENCILS
1. Apply an even coat of Ranger Dina Wakley Media white gesso with a paintbrush: start in the centre of the paper and feather out. You don’t have to cover the whole page with gesso. I left a couple of inches around the edges. Set aside and let dry completely.
3. Lay the Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stencil over the scribbles. Use a baby wipe or damp cloth to lift the colour through the stencil. Repeat around the page, using a variety of different stencils.
2. Scribble the Ranger Tim Holtz Distress crayons over the gesso. Overlap each of your colours slightly.
4. Once you are happy with the stencil design, hold the page upright and spritz with water. The water reacts with the Distress crayon and drips down the page. Once dry, embellish your paper with stamps, die cut flowers, and torn scraps of paper from your scrap paper bin.

Seasons of Life - Spring with Allison Orthner SoulArt.ca
“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”
70 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024
I’m not going to lie… it’s been a long winter. I’m not just talking about the weather. It’s been a dark, cold winter in my soul for several months. Life has been challenging and honestly at times left me wondering where God is, what is coming next, and when. But I still cling to God through the dark, cold winter, knowing the arrival of spring will eventually come. When it does, it’s a beautiful thing, as tiny signs of spring begin to show themselves and hope grows along with them. So hold on. Spring always comes.
SOUL ART
When our soul is experiencing a dark, cold winter season, it’s important to remember that God is still there with us. He is behind the scenes still working, planting, and growing even when we cannot see it and often cannot feel it. Seasons of life will always come and go, but winter is often the hardest on our soul. The secret is to hold on tight, knowing God can be trusted through it all and eventually tiny new signs of spring will again be found, bringing hope and growth back into your life.
SPRING ALWAYS COMES Allison Orthner Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Soul ART tissues, napkins and quotes, DecoArt Decoupage matte medium.
SCRAPS OF INFO In order to create a powerful visual of the first tiny signs of hope after winter, I kept the background all black and white with just a touch of colour on the flower and butterfly to represent how signs of both hope and spring often start small when coming out of a season of darkness. SIZE AND STYLE As with everything in life, your crafting can, will, and should evolve over time. There are so many sizes and styles of scrapbooking available to you. Some crafters are steadfast 12″×12″ layout lovers, and some mix ALL the sizes. I am a mix-all-the-sizes kind of girl, but have a strong lean toward 12″×12″ single pages!! The same could be said for your scrapbook style! It can be really empowering to try a different size or style, and even a different album size too. Don’t be afraid to give it a go; if you don’t love it, you can always go back. These are YOUR memories, and how you record them is completely up to you. I hope that you take a chance on stepping out of your comfort zone and scraplift all the sizes and styles shown here … And be sure to share them with us ONLINE, so we can see what you create.

BONUS SKETCH GALLERY There are an infinite number of sources that inspire, but none is so reliable and flexible as a sketch. A simple outline for element placement, a sketch can kickstart your crafting session. It can be interpreted precisely as presented, or taken with a twist; rotate it, flip it, consolidate or expand elements…it's all good! A single sketch can inspire both scrapbookers and card makers. As shown in this gallery, a single sketch can produce a delightful and diverse array of results! What would YOU create with this sketch?

SCRAPS OF INFO
Love This Life
Sources for acetate: scrapbooking and fine art stores, cake collars, packaging, OHP slides, notebook dividers, clam shells, project life sleeves, page protectors, card sleeves, Grafix sheets, laminator sheets, Mylar.
Dooreen Rousseau, Edmonton, Alberta
Designing with Acetate As a mixed media artist with eclectic tastes, I like to keep my eyes open for interesting and unique elements to add to my projects. A simple piece of plastic that is meant for the recycle bin can be used in many different ways to achieve my goal. Plastic is available in many shapes and forms and is found everywhere on earth. I store my collection of ATCs in card sleeves to go in a binder, and those pockets can be cut away and used on
84 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024
a Project Life card and become a pocket for photos, ephemera, or other elements. It’s a perfect match! I purchase fruit in clam shells and then use the plastic as a see-through element on a tag, or a substitute for shrink art when heated. I die cut bottle shapes and give a light inking with alcohol inks. Then I use stamps to make them into great embellishments for my journal pages. For this project, I cut down a sheet of heavy acetate to make panels and tags
SUPPLIES: Simple Stories patterned paper, Mintay Fancy Cards, Liquitex Molding Paste, Decoart acrylic paint, Liquitex Basic white acrylic paint, Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stamp, Sizzix Tim Holtz embossing folder, Sizzix and Cuttlebug embossing folders, Taylored Expressions Mini Slim Stencil, Studio by Katia foam tape, unknown trims and fringe.
of different sizes to add interesting pages to a tag album. It can be tricky adhering things to acetate without the adhesive showing, but decorating both sides of the panel and placing the adhesive strategically makes the adhesive invisible. Take a look at four different ways I used acetate to complement the pages to my tag album. I hope you give them a try!
MIXED MEDIA
SCRAPS OF INFO Acetate is versatile and can be heat-embossed, dry-embossed, stamped, stitched, inked, sponged, stenciled, and gelli printed. It can be used as tags, memory Dex/Rolodex, card bases, shaker cards, pockets, window pockets, specimen slides, die cuts, overlays, and other elements.
1. Cut acetate to size, and emboss using an embossing folder of your choice. Adhere a die cut or ephemera to the front of the embossed panel, using foam tape. To hide the adhesive at the back, cut a piece of designer paper smaller than the embossed panel. Adhere with foam tape matching the tape on the ephemera, and set it in place.
2. Cut acetate to the required size. Choose a stencil that fits the panel, and tape it in place. Molding paste can be coloured by adding a bit of paint and mixing well.
The panel can be decorated further with additional ephemera or collage. This effectively hides the adhesives and provides layers to the embossed panel.
Apply the paste using a palette knife, and then carefully remove the stencil and let it dry.
Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024 85
3. Cut acetate to the required size, and add texture with an embossing folder. Use a sponge to lightly pounce white acrylic paint to the edges to give the embossed tag a frosty appearance.
4. You can create wonderfully textured overlays by stamping on the acetate. Cut acetate to the required size. Choose a stamp with texture that enhances the design behind. Load and condition a sponge with white acrylic paint, and dab the paint onto the surface of the stamp. Carefully lay the acetate onto the paint and lightly press without moving. Remove the acetate, and wash your stamp immediately before the paint dries. The paint will dry on the acetate in moments.

CONTRAST IN IMAGE STYLE >
Today Ronda Ivens, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Simple Stories patterned paper, ephemera and cardstock, Ranger Archival ink, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.
The layering of the image with background paperes, tickets, and flowers is really effective in framing the image like a postcard.
Even the contrast of typefaces works to further complement the contrast in imagery and texture.
Images are obscured in the background but provide a hint of texture – almost like old wallpaper. The texture continues overtop of the layers of illustrated fruit.
The photo of the real hand with peas peeking through torn pieces of paper provides a dramatic contrast between real (or a 3D image) and flat papers that act as a torn seam.

Food Photography for the Scrapbooker
Figure 1 Figure 1
Millions of people capture photos of delicious food and then post online for the world to salivate over! There is an entire industry of food photography, and I get it! I follow my niece’s instagram page dedicated to her edible creations (Figure 1) and frequently stop scrolling at many mouth-watering images online. But as a scrapbooker, I find myself thinking these food photos are missing something very important!! Who is across from you? Where are you? What special memories are attached to this delicious photo of food?
When taking food photos, don’t forget to also capture important details like the people you are with, the location, the occasion, recipes, and other details that will bring the memory alive when you look back on it. As much as I love to eat and appreciate great food, the most important part to me is who I’m sharing it with!!! Who is beside me and across from me? Why are we eating together? Is it a special occasion or a special location? I try to include these details in my food photos when I can. 102 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024

For example, I have a family picture of us eating Belgium waffles in Belgium (Figure 2) and another showcasing scrumptious ice cream treats while camping with family (Figure 3). One of my favourites is a fun image of my inlaws being served a gigantic cinnamon bun that could easily feed eight people (Figure 4).
eat cereal in the middle of the afternoon. I was instantly taken back to the memory of a little girl interviewed on Oprah after her mother passed of cancer. When asked about her favourite memory with her Mom, she didn’t talk about their recent trip to Disney or some big milestone event; she mentioned eating a bowl of cereal with her Mom in the middle of the night. As I watched my Dad enjoying multiple different cereals like a kid in a candy store, I quietly snapped this photo (Figure 5), and then
Photos should trigger memories. Recently my 91-year-old Dad, who is suffering with dementia, asked if he can
we both sat and ate cereal together. I have a feeling it’s going to be one of my favourite memories with my Dad. None of these “food photos” are exceptional quality by any means, but they are priceless beyond measure for the memories of shared moments over food. I encourage you to capture the same.

CATHIE’S CHOICE
IndigoBlu … have you heard the name? Have you explored their stamps and their stencils, yet? If you have, I know you love them; if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. For this beautiful card, I chose the stunning, highly-detailed, vintage dogwood stamp from IndigoBlu for my focal point. I stamped it on heavy vellum and coloured the image from behind. In this way, the detail would not be overwhelmed by the colouring. In addition to the stamp, I also used the IndigoBlu letters mask. I love that I was able to create a unique title by singling out individual letters, like I did on the Sisters layout.
OH! … and if you don’t have a stash of vellum or parchment paper, you need one. My favourite is from Pergamano. It’s a perfect weight—beautiful dimension when you dry emboss, it and yet transparent enough that you can see background layers underneath. It’s sturdy enough for you to employ perforating techniques without much cracking of the parchment paper. Yes, some people call vellum “parchment paper.” I use both names. Whether you use it as a focal point on your project or as an added embellishment like on the scrapbook page, once you start using it, it will be hard not to add it in some form to your favourite paper crafting projects.
When stamping on vellum, I use VersaFine pigment ink—a quick-dry one. I stamp and then heat set a few times with my heat gun, allowing the project to cool between heat settings. If there is a lot of detail like the stamp I chose in the card project, I prefer to let the image dry overnight. This ink does have a longer curing time on the vellum, but it gives me the detail that I’m looking for and of course, SO IMPORTANTLY does not bleed out. I hope you enjoy creating projects using these techniques in your crafting future. Creating handmade cards and handmade memories with amazing tools is a process I have never tired of. HAPPY SPRING, everyone! Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024 123
Spring brings many things, but most lovely of all the offerings are Easter and Mother’s Day. Celebration of renewed life and life-givers is intertwined into this season like ribbons around a maypole! Both occasions are influenced by lots of florals, soft and pretty colour schemes, and gentle images. Our SWAK gallery is filled with Easter and Mother’s Day cards that invite you to share with your loved ones too!

THE ANTOMY OF A
Layout
CLUSTERING + LAYERING >
Sweet Murphy Jessica Quinn, Grand Rapids, Michigan SUPPLIES: Park Lane cardstock, Simple Stories patterned paper, foam stickers and ephemera, Heidi Swapp stickers, Kuretake Zig pen, 3M adhesive.
These layers and clusters include opposing textures of flat graphics and sparkly 3D type for extra visual interest.
The central band in this layout provides the perfect platform to build and anchor elements. In this case, the combination of patterned paper – almost like wallpaper – trimmed with a hand-drawn looped edge are a wonderful complement to each other.
Real photo corners!
Layering is a great visual tool for stacking a variety of elements. Here, the elements are perfectly considered. The cropping leaves key written words still visible.
Hand-written cursive type with typeset scripts contrast each other nicely. This contrast is furthered by the opposing black and white.

Meet... Ronda INTRODUCING YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY
RONDA IVENS Yellowknife, Northwest Territories Hours scrapbooking: 8 hours / month
Ronda was published for the first time in the Winter 2011/12 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine.
~ Ronda’s Scrapbooking Tip ~ Always stay inspired by others, so that when you do have time you are not too removed from your craft. Watch YouTube videos, and participate in local crops; if I have time to scroll, I do it in one of the Creative Scrapbooker Facebook Groups, and I keep a list of things to try or ideas to implement on my next layout or card.
Q. Tell us a few things about you. R. We are empty-nesters; all three of our children are in their mid-late 20s (not sure how that happened)! We have two Italian Water Dogs (Lagotto Romagnolo), Enzo and Lupo, that keep me in shape and taking a lot of photos. Q. How did you get into scrapbooking and how long have you been doing it? R. I began scrapbooking 20 years ago when I went to a Creative Memories Party that one of my friends convinced me to attend. After a trip to Disneyland, I became addicted to gluing memories to paper! 130 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024
Q. What are your MUST-HAVE supplies? R. I am a paper addict, and I love to include memorabilia on my layouts; sometimes that is the perfect embellishment! Over the last 10 years, I have transitioned into standing while scrapbooking. I bought a standing desk in 2017, and now sitting to create at a retreat is sometimes a challenge. Q. What type of camera do you use? R. My iPhone Camera Q. Do you print your photos or get them printed? R. I print them at London Drugs.
Q. What was the first issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine that you were published in? R. I am honoured to say that the first issue my layouts appeared in was the Winter Issue 2011/12… (see above) I love that the magazine shows a glimpse of what it is like to live in Northern Canada! Q. What inspires you? R. Flipping through current or older issues of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine, … YouTube & Instagram Accounts that I follow, and I return to my old albums or favourite layouts when I get in a rut.

December Winner – Kimberly Boliver
This is what we LOVE about our craft: besties celebrating their friendship. From the moment Karen Dooner arrived into the arms of Sandra Corkrey at the train station in London, Ontario, they shared a magical, comical and “creative” fun-filled 4 days/5 nights making cards, stamping, die cutting… and of course, sorting, searching, and driving each other crazy looking for an elusive die! “Forced” to stay indoors in their PJs due to winter storms with snow and plummeting temperatures, their family members enjoyed hearing the endless giggles and celebrating the friendship that these two ladies have. Truly wonderful.
Dee Corbin, Cyndi Brideaux, and Karen Cobb enjoyed a 4-night scrapbooking retreat at the fabulous Wildflower B & B in Qualicum, British Columbia, last November. It’s a biannual excursion travelling up the island, stopping at scrapbooking shops along the way. A paper crafting ROAD TRIP! Sounds wonderful! Cyndi is sporting her exclusive Village of Inspired People apron! Visit page 104 for all the details. Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024 131

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2024 143
In the End Fresh beginnings can indeed happen at any moment–we don’t have to wait for a new year, a new season, or a symbolic date to embrace change or embark on a new adventure. In the end, scrapbooking, just like life, is filled with opportunities for growth and exploration, often waiting for us to notice and seize them. Perhaps a quiet moment on a bench with someone you love is all you need to get started.
Scan here to see the page calls and submit your projects today.
