A New Found Love for

Everything Fairy

This issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine is brimming with both fairy and celestial-inspired projects! How thrilling for me! Lori Domes’s layout on page 45 radiates a celestial aura; I can almost hear the wolf's howl. Desiree Saskiw’s layout on page 41 evokes a moonlit night filled with the magic of stardust. Pam Colosimo has crafted a fairy garden with the perfect fairy taking

Pam Colosimo

What are your obsessions? What makes your heart flutter with joy? Are you weaving these magical elements into your projects, cards, and art journal pages? If not, what are you waiting for? Let the magic of what you love take centre stage in your next creation.

Jackie Here are some tiny peeks of the enchanting projects I mentioned. Be sure to discover the full magic on the pages listed.

Tara Ratcliffe

So where is this enchantment leading us, you ask?

centre stage on her layout on page 98. And the photos on Tara Ratcliffe’s layouts on pages 89 and 91 tug at my fairy heartstrings!

Tara Ratcliffe

Over the last few years, I have become more and more enchanted by all things fairy-like. These magical little beings live in tiny homes or even under the cap of a mushroom. Their wings glitter in the moonlight, and as they float, they spread their ethereal magic. For me, the fairy realm is a mere whisper away from the mystical and spiritual world of the stars and the moon—a realm where wise old owls hold ancient knowledge and wolves serenade the night with their soulful songs.

WE LOVE TO HEAR FROM OUR READERS

Dear Carnival Hard Working Women, This is just a Huge Thank You for all the care and effort that goes into the weekend. My sister-in-law has flown in from Ontario for the second year in a row now, and it did not disappoint. We are especially grateful for all the new techniques we learned, and of course, the beautiful items we purchased. We are almost overwhelmed deciding which one to incorporate first. I can also say the relationships that develop with the women, so easily, is such a blessing. Having just moved to Calgary right before Covid, finding my crafting people here was tricky at first. This year, I was amazed at how many ladies I ran into whom I now know from crafting events or from meeting them at the carnival last year. We look forward to next year and please know what a wonderful time you provide. Sincerely, Janet Warren

Congratulations to Lindsy Cummings, the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Summer 2024 cover girl! This joyful photo made us giggle, and we absolutely love it!

Leona Derksen's beautiful layout was selected as a winning entry at the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Great Canadian Scrapbook Carnival this past spring. We were especially moved by her heartfelt journaling, which describes the person behind the camera capturing a photo of her daughter Kallie. It truly melted our hearts.

"Nothing’s better than reading Creative Scrapbooker with a friend!" Thank you, Wanda Desrosiers, for sharing this heartfelt moment between you and Darla Lowenburg.

TALK TO US We love meeting new friends! Thank you, Jessica Plutt and Joanne Thompson, for stopping by our booth and sharing some fun and giggles at the Great Lakes Mega Meet in Novi, Michigan!

An amazing journey! Leanne Webster carried our Spring 2024 issue to the far-off island of Faial in the Açores – in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, west off the coast of Portugal! Thank you for sharing your journey with us Leanne!

We are delighted by how Kendell White designed her scrapbook layout celebrating her feature on the cover of the Fall 2023 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. Her creative touch shines through, especially with the inclusion of images showcasing her layouts published inside the issue. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us, Kendell!

Amberlynn Nelson was so excited to get her copy of our Summer issue that she just had to bring it to work with her! We love being your creative distraction, Amberlynn!!

I Slept Through Aurora Borealis I’m so sad. I missed capturing the worldwide Aurora Borealis display this past May. I woke up to hundreds of other people’s stunning photos from around the world on social media and had instant regret that I slept through it. Me, a photographer, who has had this on my bucket list!

What shocked me most was when I spoke to friends who posted their colourful northern lights photos, almost all of them used their cellphones! This just reinforces the fact that smartphone cameras can now rival traditional cameras in capability and quality!

However, even though cellphones do a great job, there are a few special tips to consider when trying to capture decent images of the Aurora Borealis. 1. Use a high ISO (800–2000 or more) to accommodate for the darkness. 2. Slow your shutter speed possibly as low as 10 to 15 seconds. Ideally, use a tripod, and be sure not to overexpose and wash out the colours. 3. Shoot RAW so you can recover shadows and highlights later in post-production, Spring heralds a return to colour as Earth sheds her sparkling white shroud and invites greener pursuits. without affecting the quality.

Spring

Impatient gardeners armed with seed catalogues and dreams of a bountiful harvest emerge into the warming sunshine to turn and ready the soil. Farms and forests explode with new life, fulfilling that timeless promise of renewal and regeneration. Everyone is excited to cheer thisIf new season, new for growth, Other than that, just PLAY and EXPERIMENT! you are by water, example, you and new memories in the making! Whether your spring is snowy, verdant, or rainy, can double the colours by capturing the muddy, reflection of the lights in the water, like this seasonal gallery all things spring will delight andNorthwest inspire you! GeoffofLitrato did up by Yellowknife in the Territories (Figure 1).

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Figure 2

Figure 1

Figure 3

Another fun idea is to capture an object or building in the image, which can be striking, especially if it’s already lit up (Figure 2). Finally, I think my favourite idea is to capture a dark silhouette against the beautiful colours of the night sky. (Figures 3-5). From trees to people and even horses, use your imagination to create unique photos highlighting the gorgeous light show in the sky! So, for now, I’m living vicariously through other people’s images, but praying I will have a chance to capture my very own beautiful Aurora Borealis images someday! Figure 4

Crafting Cosmic Connections Stargazing and wondering about the infinite nature of outer space has fascinated humans from our first steps on this earth! Reaching for the stars encourages us to dream without limits and to be bold in achievement. Celestial guidance is written in the stars and stardust is part of our very being; we are made for big things! Sunshine brings life and joy, moonshine brings wisdom and confidence, and both mark time and the seasons in an orderly fashion. Acknowledging the furthest realms of the universe allows for perspective on daily life, and shows us how tiny moments string together like the planets to create something bigger and more wonderful than we can imagine! Looking for some creative fun? Want to create something new and use some unique, fun techniques? Follow along, and I’ll show you how I created a fantastic background that you’ll want to use for more than just one project. I’ll also guide you through making your own custom, handmade washi tape. Then, we'll add colour to some fun, funky flowers using outstanding watercolour pencils 😍. Making colouring easy for those who aren’t fans of it is something I love to share—keep it simple, keep it fun. Creating my own custom backgrounds and embellishments has been a long-lived passion for me. I love taking white cardstock and making it “anything but white.” This is definitely my happy place. For these projects, we’ll be working with Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Super Stock and Prism Studios watercolour paper. The exterior of the fun little book will be made using Super Stock, which is a beautifully sturdy, 130-pound cover-weight paper that is good on both sides, has a fabulous matte finish, and accepts most mediums. It truly enhances my projects and the embellishments I choose to create. Obviously, it’s a magnificent choice for mini books and scrapbook pages. I also thought it would be fun to play with some black, glossy cardstock and customize that too. For the customization of these outstanding cardstocks, I’ll be using Prism Studios paint pens and watercolour pencils. When creating the funky flower embellishments, I was watercolouring on Prism Studios watercolour paper—a joy to use. When creating your little memory booklet, know that you can use it for any occasion where you’ve made cherishable memories. Tractors, Parades and Best Friends Jessica Michaels, Morrisdale, Pennsylvania SUPPLIES: Colorbök cardstock, Bella BLVD patterned paper and stickers, Elle’s Studio stamps, Ranger Archival ink, Hemptique twine, Therm O Web iCraft Zots, We R Makers circle cutter, Brother LB-6800 sewing machine, unknown black thread.

Clustering is always a great design tool. It allows you to group elements together to create focus. Jessica has taken this further by grouping elements with a common theme and colour palette. And because each of the three clusters here is treated with a similar approach, they feel like they are part of a family, yet each one has its own personality.

The thread and string add texture and dimension to the cluster. And they don’t have to be perfectly applied for them to be very effective and eye-catching.

Choosing a typeface without its counterforms renders the type more as a graphic than a typeface. It’s a nice contrast to the typewriter-rendered sayings on either side.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

By Dooreen Rousseau

• MIXED MEDIA •

The Magic of Nature Dooreen Rousseau Edmonton, Alberta SUPPLIES: 49 and Market rub-ons, ephemera, laser cut elements and patterned paper, Sizzix dies, Lowes drywall tape, Tim Holtz Idea-ology mini clipboard, Ranger Tim Holtz Distress watercolour pencils, Distress ink and Distress Grit Paste, Art Basics heavy gesso, Delta Art & Drafting palette knife, unknown faux vintage tape and muslin fabric, Staples binder rings.

SCRAPS OF INFO The 6” x 8” papers from the 49 and Market Krafty Garden collection pack are used to make the front and back cover, as well as the inside pages, along with other Krafty bits and ephemera to decorate.

50 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2024

MIXED MEDIA

The Magic of Nature give it some weight and easily holds Nature is indeed magical, especially in the fall season. My favorite! Blooms are still going strong, while other plants are getting ready for the long winter season. Mushrooms can be found everywhere in all sizes and shapes. I love the mix of florals and mushrooms, and I am happy to share my nature journal with you. The mini clipboard is used as an assemblage piece to the front cover to

the collage elements used to create the theme. I punched holes in the pages and bound them together with binder rings, allowing the ability to add additional pages, envelopes, and pockets to the journal. I will add more pages to hold photos of my garden space and empty seed packets to remind me of which ones I liked. I will also journal notes about how I might change up my garden next year and

collect seeds for safekeeping. It will become a treasured keepsake and something I can look back on when the winter season comes. For now, there are still a couple of months of beautiful weather and wonderful colours to inspire me to create. Happy fall, y’all!

2.

SCRAPS OF INFO I have a collection of templates I make as I create different projects. A favorite of mine is a file tab template. It can be moved to any position along an edge and traced on, then cut out. The tab adds interest to pockets, journal cards, and clusters. It can hold a word quote or have an embellishment or dangle attached.

1. UPCYCLING THE CLIP

1. Begin by removing the clip from the clipboard. Reattach the screws to the clip to keep it all together. Brush on a layer of heavy gesso and, before it's dry, add grit paste or other texture paste to give the clip visible texture. Set aside to dry.

2. Add another coat of heavy gesso and let dry. Use watercolour pencils in green and blue and scrub colour across the surface. Use a waterbrush to move the colour out. Repeat until you have pleasing colour on the clip. The final step is to pick up some heavy gesso with a palette knife and scrape it across the texture to add highlights.

2.

3. Set aside to dry.

DECORATING THE CLIPBOARD

1. Select a paper from the collection pack and adhere it to the chipboard. Sand the edges lightly and ink with Gathered Twigs Distress ink.

2. Select collage elements from the Ephemera Pack and the Mini Laser Cut Elements Pack, and add rub-ons from the Transfer Sheet. Once the collage is complete, you can reassemble the clip to the clipboard.

Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2024 51

CREATE THE JOURNAL

1. The front and back cover of the journal is made by cutting down two panels measuring 8” x 6”. I used the cardboard backing from empty watercolour pads. Select papers from the collection pack to decorate the front and back panels.

2. The inside front and back panels have an added flap. The flaps are from one of the papers that is in landscape orientation. Cut the paper in half and use them as flaps. Score 0.25” from the sides and adhere to the back of the paper before adhering both to the inside panels.

1.

3. The rest of the journal is made by gluing together papers from the collection, with the exception of the pocket page.

2.

SCRAPS OF INFO Make a template ahead of time to make it easy to punch holes in the pages so they all line up. Cut a piece of sturdy cardboard measuring the height of the page (8”). Measure and mark a line 0.25” from the edge and make two more marks 2.25” from each end. Carefully cut the holes just on the 0.25” line. Mark one end as TOP. It will matter when marking where the holes will go on the pages, as the slightest difference in measuring will make the holes wonky. Always have the top at the top. It saves a lot of work figuring out which holes to punch later.

SCRAPS OF INFO I love repositionable fabric tape! It is so versatile and has a great texture to add to any project. Cut a small slit into the edge of the tape and tear. It always tears straight and clean. I use the tape on cardstock scraps and then run them through my die cut machine. The resulting die cut looks great and is very flexible and strong, especially for delicate dies with thin stems. The tape can be inked, heat embossed, and stamped on. I stuck down the tape onto a piece of cardstock to create an interesting belly band on one of the pages. 52 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2024

MIXED MEDIA CREATE THE POCKET PAGE

1. Use a paper bag, approximately 5” x 11”, to make pockets for one of the pages.

2. Begin with the bottom flap of the bag towards you and simply fold it up. The side edges will be glued to create a deep pocket, but decorate the bag first.

3. Fold the top of the bag down 2” from the top, towards the back of the bag. Glue in place. Once the fronts are decorated, you will glue it to the page and have two deep pockets to put tags and journaling cards in.

4. Decorate the top portion of the bag with a postcard from the Ephemera Pack.

5. Decorate the bottom portion with repositionable fabric tape. The tape is more than wide enough to cover the entire front. Use a bone folder to press the tape in place and cut off the excess.

6. Once decorated, glue the sides of the bottom flap pocket, then glue the whole pocket panel to the paper along the sides and bottom only.

WARM SWEATERS, HOT DRINKS AND FOOD Where are all my Fall-loving crafters?!This is one of my most favorite times of the year for so many reasons (including sweater weather and yummy snacks LOL)…more scrapbooking is certainly at the top of my list! While I craft at least a little (and yes, sometimes a lot) all year long, when the cooler temperatures hit and kids are back in school (even if they are in university), you can be sure to find me crafting up a storm in my studio! I love to Start with a Sketch…for this one, I am sharing a single-page, 12” x 12” layout based exactly on the sketch and then, giving all you Double-Loving Girls TWO layouts to inspire you! Andie from @papercandiedesigns joined in on the fun to give you her take on this single-page sketch. She loves a twopage spread, and I love how she twisted the sketch and highlighted her pretty pups! For my double-page layout, I kept it vertical, but added an extra strip and pre-printed tags from one of my go-to Cut-Apart sheets as a backdrop for some smaller photos, lots of embellishments, as well as space for journaling! Be sure to TAG US @csmscrapbooker as we love to see what you create!

Journey through the Fairy Realm Fairies, tiny winged creatures known for their love of nature, magic, and mischief, have sparked our imagination for centuries. Their mystical ways populate stories as old as time and their good-natured hijinks have inspired revered writers like Shakespeare and Eoin Colfer (author of the Artemis Fowl series). Disney features many magical fairy folk who help out our forlorn and despondent heroines, like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Our fascination with these whimsical woodland creatures continues as they inspire paper crafters to include qualities of fairies in their cards and layouts. Enjoy this gallery filled with fairy inspiration!

Spooky But Sweet Jessica Michaels, Morrisdale, Pennysylvania SUPPLIES: Park Lane cardstock, Elle’s Studio stickers and stamps, Close to My Heart and VersaMark ink, Ranger Archival ink, Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink, Distress Oxide sprays and embossing powder, 3M Scott ATG gun, Tonic Studios Nuvo Deluxe adhesive, SpiegelMom Scraps sequins, {Not} Just For Boys Kit Club embellishments, Scrappin Happy Studio flair, Mintay Papers chipboard, Stampin’ Up! heat gun, unknown tissue paper.

The additional spider web acts as an anchor point for these little snippets of information.

Patterns are a great way to add texture. Choose an element in the layout to play off of. In this case, the spider web was the inspiration. The spiders then became a background pattern. When choosing a pattern, there are symmetrical, asymetrical and random (here). Random is often the most whimsical choice.

Adding dimension to the elements help create that extra pop. This one not only has depth, but a little glitter to boot.

Add contrast by combining diffferent expressions of the same shape. Here paint splatter mixed with a little glitter splatter is subtle, but very effective.

HEART & SOUL CANDIES A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Fall – The Season of Change

with Allison Orthner SoulArt.ca

“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”

106 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2024

Change can be difficult. We don’t like the uncertainty it brings. But what if we chose to instead embrace change? What if we faced with confidence that a new thing is being prepared that is even better, more beautiful, and more fulfilling on the other side? When I reflect on my life, the greatest beauty has often come from changes that I didn’t want and surely didn’t ask for, but God knew I needed.

SOUL ART

EMBRACE CHANGE Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Soul ART quotes, DecoArt Decoupage medium, acrylic paints, tinfoil and Q-tips.

SCRAPS OF INFO After watching videos creating art with assorted blobs of paint, I decided to try my own. Scan this QR Code to watch the full video.

Step 1

Step 2

CREATING THE SOUL ART BACKGROUND Step 1: Start with drops of assorted blue, green, brown, and white paint on the canvas.

Step 3

Step 2: Swipe across the canvas with a paintbrush to form a blended background. Step 3: Crinkle up a piece of tinfoil and dab it on the wet paint to create a texture.

Step 4

Step 4: Add tree trunks. Put an elastic around a handful of Q-tips, dip in assorted red, orange, and yellow paints, then dab them on the canvas to create leaves.

Life on the

FARM ¾

While farm life moves through every season, there is something spectacular about farms in fall. Fields, barns, and gardens are burgeoning with abundance, fruits of farmers’ year-long labour. There is much work to be done, but the air is fresh and the results are rewarding. Farm families pass on traditions and knowledge to new generations, the cycle of life weaving its way through them every bit as much as through the produce and animals in their care. Our seasonal gallery is filled with cards and layouts celebrating this agrarian lifestyle, and we hope you are inspired by these bountiful projects!

126 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2024

Brads, or fasteners, have been in use in offices for decades since their invention by George W. McGill in 1866. Originally created to hold multiple pieces of paper together, especially when those pieces needed to move, or rotate, paper crafters naturally showed creativity to expand their use as a decorative item. While they do sometimes perform their original function of holding paper pieces together (like in Karen Dooner’s ‘Boo’ card, where brads hold open the peekaboo window to reveal a spooky surprise), brads have become so much more! They quickly add texture and dimension. Brads are often created to add an element around a theme, such as on Donna Baes’ ‘Boop’ card or on Tammy Hawes’ ‘Autumn Embrace’ card. It’s clear that brads are a mainstay that are here to stay!
