LETTER FROM THE EDITOR JACKIE LUDLAGE

Here is a small collection of projects featuring a variety of mixed media techniques that Dooreen Rousseau has taught during her monthly Mixed Media class in our Village of Inspired People Facebook Group.

10 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2023

MIXED MEDIA WEDNESDAY Did you hear the news? Our Village of Inspired People Facebook Group is celebrating TWO years of inspiring, giggling, creating, and otherwise having tons of fun with our incredible members. This intimate group of like-minded crafters is seriously like no other. There are so many perks and projects and challenges and demos and exchanges… the list is long, my friends. Basically, you just need to join us! One of our monthly events is called Mixed Media Wednesday taught by the incredibly talented Dooreen Rousseau. One Wednesday a month Dooreen pops on and shares a mixed media tutorial for us. Everything from demystifying all the mediums out there, to creating rust, to tea bags, to photo transfers and SO

MUCH MORE. We recently did a low-key survey asking about paper crafting goals. So many of our followers talked about wanting to know more and use more mixed media type applications on their projects. You asked, and we answered! Part of being a Villager in our Village of Inspired People is having access to ALL our past classes, demos, videos, challenges, galleries etc. INCLUDING all of Dooreen’s past mixed media tutorials! Joining our VIP group TODAY means you have access to over 26 PAST months of archived activities. And we archive everything! We would LOVE to see you in our Village of Inspired People! You are going to love it! See you all there!

IT’S SHOW TIME! LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER KATHARINA DOYLE

The Great Canadian Scrapbook Carnival is an annual event that takes place in both Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is a 2-day event that brings together crafters from across North America to enjoy shopping among vendors, learning new techniques, and cropping together with friends. The event aims to promote the paper crafting industry in a fun, energetic, and multidisciplinary way. The Carnival features various activities such as workshops, make-and-takes, and demonstrations by industry experts. The event also has a vendor marketplace with local stores and brands who are eager to inspire and offer great deals. It is a perfect opportunity for all participants to learn new techniques, socialize with fellow crafters, and enjoy a fun-filled weekend of creativity. These events are made possible with the support of generous show sponsors (see page 134) who help us drive energy into the industry and enable us to generate evergrowing interest in crafters of all ages through this amazing consumer experience.

12 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer Spring 2023 2023

The April show in Calgary was a smash hit. We set a new attendance record! Join us for the Edmonton show May 26 & 27, 2023! Stay tuned for 2024 dates! I have heard from many people across North America who would like to make the trip to Alberta to join us. Do it! It’s TOTALLY worth it, and the Rocky Mountains are close by! I love to see returning faces alongside new participants who have travelled far to join our community. Hug hard,

Katharina

HEART & SOUL

Figure 1

“The Colours of Summer” It is said that colours evoke emotions, and I believe it! I find that blue hues of the sky and water bring me peace and calm, while green feels nurturing, and yellow and orange simply make me happy…especially if it’s part of a beautiful sunset (Figure 1). After months of some pretty drab views through winter, it’s always nice to see more colours of summer coming out in nature, flowers, and even people’s clothing!

The vibrant colours of summer elicit feelings of joy, life, and energy. Be intentional in capturing colours and corresponding emotions in your photos. Capturing the colours of summer in our photos helps us relive not only the memories, but also all the feelings and emotions of the experiences. Here are some ways to intentionally add colours and emotions into our summer photos > 28 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2023

Figure 2

Figure 4 1. Find a colourful background! I recently came across an iguana on the beach and wanted to capture a photo (Figure 2). The first image didn’t do him justice as the background was very dull, but then I noticed some beautiful blue walls. I slowly walked to a different position and then squatted low so that the blues were directly behind him. The resulting image is much more stunning with a vibrant background showing off his beautiful colours. 2. Wear colourful clothes! During a recent trip to Costa Rica, it just made sense to bring along some colourful clothing to enhance the intense colours of the rainforest (Figure 3). 3. Look for items with rich colours! From an individual flower and lush green plants to birds and butterflies (Figure 4), be on the lookout for pops of colour! Figure 3 Summer provides a beautiful array of colours to add to your photos, so be intentional in seeking them out and capturing images that trigger emotions and the memories again and again.

Quick, easy, and satisfying, texture paste is an element that crafters of all experience levels can apply to their projects. You can purchase a rainbow of colours, but can also easily create your own custom shade. It can be glittery, matte, multicoloured, or provide a subtle background texture. We know this gallery will provide just the inspiration you need to start using texture paste for the first time (or expand your repertoire if you’ve already got some in your stash). Whether you make texture paste the main feature or use it as an added element, your next project is going to pop with paste!

Sometimes the hardest part about paper crafting is deciding how to begin. There are so many things to think about—photos, paper, embellishments, journaling … and then you have to actually put it all together! By using a well-designed sketch, the guesswork is taken care of, and you get to spend your time creating, which is the fun part! PRO TIP: I always encourage crafters to look at each sketch with an ‘outside the box’ approach in order to maximize the number of projects they’re able to create based on one idea. Rotate and flip each sketch to use on various-sized bases!

“BE STILL” Summer is here!! This means that our lives shift with kids out of school, vacations planned, BBQs, sports, family gatherings and more! Although I love all the activities that come along with summer’s nicer weather, I also very intentionally pursue moments where I can simply BE STILL… reflect… refocus… restore my soul.

with Allison Orthner

“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”

60 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2023

One of my all-time favourite Bible verses is “Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10. So simple, and yet so important to remember each and every day. And I’m extra intentional in the summertime to find ways to “Be still.”

SOUL ART

SCRAPS OF INFO Chandeliers represent royalty and being in God's presence, so I adorned it with little crystals to add to the beauty of being in the presence of God.

BE STILL AND KNOW Allison Orthner Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Soul ART tissue papers, quotes and stickers, DecoArt Decoupage Matte medium.

SCRAPS OF INFO Within the pages of my Soul ART soulbook, I designed a page surrounding the theme of being still as one of life’s foundational truths and a reminder that my soul can find REST in God.

Being still doesn’t always mean no activity. (Although sometimes it does… like taking a nap in my backyard!!) Most importantly, it’s being mindful of the presence of God and recognizing His tender care in even the smallest of ways. If I can remember that God is God

(and I am NOT!) and that He loves me, sees me, knows me, and accepts me, then I can BE STILL, leave all my worries in His hands and find REST for my soul.

I WILL GIVE YOU REST Rebeca Rios, Cherry Valley, Illinois SUPPLIES: Studio G letter stamps, Illustrated Faith stickers, Artist Loft watercolours, Zig millennium dual tip writer.

SCRAPS OF INFO Water has always been very calming to me, so floating, reading and just relaxing are my kind of rest. I should have added some sweet tea too! I need this reminder that God is my restgiver and entering into His presence can give me rest, even in the middle of a chaotic life.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Remove the elastic closure strap from your Blank Canvas Planner and set aside. Using a paintbrush, coat the inside and outside of the planner, and the canvas part of the closure strap with a layer of white or clear gesso. Let dry.

2. Tape your stencil (with removable tape) to the planner to keep it in place. Using a palette knife, gently apply a thicker layer of gesso over the stencil to create a low relief design. Let dry. Do not sponge over the textured design. 3. Place two boxes or books beneath either side of your planner to elevate it so that it lies flat. You can place paper towels in between as an added layer of protection for easy clean up later. Using a paint colour of your choice, apply a generous layer of paint, and let dry. Depending on the consistency of your paint, you may need more than one layer.

4. Do the same to the inside of the planner. Once the paint has dried slightly, go over it with your paintbrush to create a distressed look. Do the same with the canvas part of your closure strap. 5. Coat the planner with a second layer of paint, and wait until it has dried to a tacky consistency. Use a fine, damp sponge to blot the paint and create an interesting texture. Then let dry fully. 6. Using your stencil again, position it over the design and apply a gold wax. Apply the wax to the edges of the planner for a finished look. As an added detail, use the Distress Spray Stain and splatter your planner with gold paint. Let dry completely, replace the closure strap, and enjoy your finished planner!

5 Follow these steps to create this fun design for your summertime projects. I used watercolour paints and watercolour paper, but you could also use markers and coloured pencils on smooth, white cardstock. 1. Draw a word with simple block or bubble letters in pencil on watercolour paper. 2. Draw blades of grass in varying heights and curves behind and in front of the letters. 3. Trace over all your pencil lines with a permanent, fine-tip black pen. Erase all pencil marks. 4. Paint the letters with watercolour, and let dry completely. Next, paint the grass. 5. Cut along the top edges of the blades of grass and the bottom of the title.

On the layout, I positioned my photo behind the grassy title to create dimension and make the design more dynamic. I also made a cute, simple card with the same watercolour grass technique, except I also painted the sky blue. You could easily add this grassy design to your art journal and planner, too. The best part? No mowing!

Flower bouquets are usually wrapped in something, whether it be cellophane, plain brown paper, patterned paper, or fabric-like material. Often the bouquet wrap seems too pretty to be thrown away, so over the years, I have saved many of them to recycle on a rainy crafting day. Here are some ideas for repurposing various bouquet wrappers in your paper crafting projects. Use the wrapping material “as is” as background paper or cut, stamp, paint, ink, and dry emboss to change the look. Have fun and turn what is often considered waste material into art.

Brick contributes an excellent design element to cards and scrapbook pages by adding texture, a geometric pattern, and a sense of solidity. It can feel traditional, industrial, rustic, or edgy, depending on how the creator uses it in the project. A brick motif is a surprisingly flexible element, providing the option to use bold or soft colours, an embossed texture, or flat image to create a subtle background or a major feature. We give a solid 10/10 and stack up the kudos for this gallery filled with brick-spiration!

Keep on Flipping

I’m sending out a huge thank you to Heartfelt Creations for creating beautiful products, paper, stamps, and dies that allowed me to create this incredible flipbook for my daughter Nikki’s 49th birthday. There are approximately 56 photos in this album—all from Nikki’s 48th year. All of the photos are taken from my phone, printed at home, and put right into this book. It’s one thing to have all these photos on my phone, and it’s a CELEBRATION to have them all in this album. You just want to keep on flipping! This timeless album was embellished with one of my favourite die sets— the Curvy Accent Border Craft Die set from Heartfelt Creations. The die set comprises a total of six dies 9 inches long that can be used on cards of any size and scrapbook pages of any size and can be combined to create endless looks. The Heartfelt Creations stamp I chose is large, so I can use it in its entirety or break it up into smaller pieces as I see fit. This is one of my favourite things to purchase—stamps and dies that I know will be used in countless projects and shown in countless ways. I know this project looks like it is difficult, but once you do the first one you will realize it really isn’t that bad. Once you get the hang of it, you can alter the size to fit the occasion. I have many of these books in different sizes. Whatever size you decide to choose, I wish you as much joy as I had in creating this extra special gift of memories for my daughter.
