LETTER FROM JACKIE LUDLAGE, FOUNDING EDITOR

The Struggle is Part of the Story d Life isn’t perfect. If you spend a lot of time on social media you might find that statement hard to believe. As we flip through Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook we are inundated with PERFECT images. Everything from couples in coordinated clothes that match the restaurant they are sitting in, children planting in the garden with new gardening tools and rubber boots that match, and that gorgeous morning selfie with the sun shining through the flowing white curtains and someone happily starts their day on the treadmill while drinking a green shake of some sort. You know what I am talking about. Now don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things if they are your real life. They are just not what my life looks like. My craft room is not colourcoordinated; my husband and I are rarely romantic; my children fight; if I had gloves to protect my nails (if I had manicured nails) when doing the dishes they wouldn’t coordinate with my backsplash; and I 100% do not look like a laundry detergent ad when I get up in the morning. Nope. None of that happening here. In my house, we have struggles. Real struggles. Some of the struggles are even too painful for me to share here

10 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

in my letter. I keep a very private art journal where many of the pages are warped from my tears, where there are no colour schemes, and more than a few of the pages have been ripped apart. Here I share the secret parts of my heart, my worries, and my vulnerabilities. I find it healing. Although I am not ready to share this part of my soul anytime soon, I am so inspired by YOU, our readers, who shared their stories with us in our Scrapbooking the Hard Stuff feature on page 100. I cheered, I cried, and I related to sooo many of your journeys. I am humbled and honoured that you shared these precious moments with all of us. I know that it wasn’t easy. Your stories have inspired us all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are heroes. Among the happy celebrations, the perfect portraits, the decorated cakes that turned out, and the flowers that are blooming bright, take some time to reflect and document the days that it rained. I believe that the rain teaches us so much more than the sunshine about ourselves, and it helps mould us into the beautiful people we are. We are all perfectly imperfect. Have a wonderful Fall, everyone! ~ Jackie

A Glimpse

Katharina Doyle, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: My Mind’s Eye My Colors Cardstock, American Crafts Kelly Creates Jewel Brush pen, Kuretake Zig Metallic Calligraphy pen, Clearsnap ColorBox pigment ink, Stampa Barbara snow globe stamp, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L E-Z Runner Grand and 3D Foam Squares.

What if...

we could travel back in time? Not to alter things, but just to observe. To glimpse firsthand what life was like. To witness our families’ pasts and gain a better understanding of…ourselves. No doubt there would be experiences involving love and suffering with which we could empathize. I suspect there would be stories that surprise us, and experiences that display how much people’s assumptions about the future and knowledge of the world have changed. Regardless of what we might see, we would gain a mindfulness of our past that would serve us well in the future. Each of our scrapbook pages offers such glimpses into our lives for future generations. We show the diversity of experiences, thinking, and priorities.

12 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

Alongside my family scrapbooks, I also scrapbook my friends, my neighborhood, and career. But I’d still like to travel back in time. I would love to see the world my grandmother lived in when she was young. Today, I relish letters with her handwriting and the awkwardlyposed pictures that include her. Make no doubt about it, it’s all in my scrapbooking. If you are fortunate enough to have elderly family members, what if you simply sat down with them, asked them to pull out old pictures and letters, and got them talking? Who better than a scrapbooker to capture their stories?! It’s easier than figuring out time travel; do it while you can. Grateful, Katharina

WE LOVE TO HEAR FROM OUR READERS “I know that the Spring 2019 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine was Karen Ellis’s last issue, but I was lucky to meet Karen last week on a course called "Sea Environmental Training Course." We both work with the Canadian Cadet Movement, and as such we are reserve officers, specially trained to deliver Sea, Army or Air training to teenagers. When I met Karen, she looked so familiar, but I couldn't place her. Then she asked how my crop went and mentioned CSM... long time reader here. That now puts two silly people together, in not warm weather so we obviously had to get a few pictures! Please note that the water temperature was about 4°C in Halifax, NS, at the time, and the air was only about 7° on this day. That didn't stop us from doing harbour tours though! Explains all the layers. My husband was proud of me for not making her sign ALL my CSM issues she was in. Thanks for reading this, and keep being awesome, CSM. Karen Ellis will be missed.â€? ~ Colleen

Sandy Hobbs from ScrapbookingFanatics.com attended Creativworld in Frankfurt, Germany, this past February. Sandy took her copy of the Winter issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine along for the ride! Colouring & Creative Journaling With Bible art journaling growing in popularity, we are now seeing a greater selection of journaling Bibles on the market. I recently discovered the Inspire Bible published by Tyndale with hundreds of pre-drawn line-art illustrations ready to be coloured! This Bible is perfect for beginners and those who like to adult colour as part of their meditation on God’s Word, while still providing hundreds of blank columns for your own ideas as well.

Great and Marvelous Lindsey Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Inspired Bible, Chameleon Color Tones pencils.

Scraps of Info When using pencil crayons, doing multiple layers and blending multiple colours with different pressures will add life and dimension to your art, while areas coloured with just one colour and one level of pressure will look flat.

SHADING WITH CHAMELEON COLOR TONE PENCILS

1. Create Highlights and Shadows Imagine a light source shining on your page, and identify where the highlights and shadows would be. Using the lighter end of your first crayon, cover the entire area with a light base layer. Then gradually move outward from the highlight, applying medium pressure and eventually pressing harder in the shadows.

2. Use Various Colours

3. Add Finishing Touches

Use the darker end of the pencil and repeat Step 1. Then select another crayon colour that complements the first, and repeat using light, medium, and hard pressure. This will not only help blend the colours, but using multiple colours also adds interest. Add in as many colours and layers as you like, making sure to overlap to help blend.

You can try blending the colours more by rubbing with a paper towel or colouring overtop with a white pencil crayon. If you want your highlights lighter, you can gently erase back some of the colour. Finally, use darker colours or even black to add in some detailed lines and further shadowing.

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter

By Tiffany Spaulding

Fall Overhaul – Six things you can do to tidy up and organize your craft room TODAY! Step 1– Get a purge box We often hang onto stuff we aren’t likely to use because we’re not sure what to do with it. It’s too nice to throw away, but no longer fits our crafting style, the themes we craft about, or products we like to use. Some of the things in your craft room may NEVER have been used, which makes them even more difficult to remove. There are a few things you can do to help yourself keep this type of craft room clutter to a minimum. The first thing to do is get a PURGE box. This is a box (or basket) large enough to hold a 12″ × 12″ item. It should be close at hand whenever/ wherever you’re crafting. When you come across something in your supply collection you know you’ll never use, put it in the Purge box. Once it goes in, it doesn’t come out: that’s a rule. Have a plan for where the contents of the Purge box will go when it starts to fill up. Local school, Sunday school, nursing home, community centre, hospital… all of these places are DELIGHTED to receive unwanted craft supplies. Having a plan makes it

50 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

MUCH easier to “detach” from your supplies, especially if you’re connected emotionally in some way to the recipient. One of my crafty pals, bags up her purge items by theme, and then take those bags to crops. She walks around the room

looking for someone who is working on that particular theme and then gifts them the bag.

THE ORGANIZED CRAFTER

Step 2– Turn your piles into files

Piles of clutter from previous projects are most likely the biggest challenge in your craft room. Get a large container (I call mine the “go back basket”) and move around your room scooping the piles into the container. BOOM – instant tidy! Then file those supplies back into their proper storage area/container.

If you don’t feel like you have a good “filing” system, grab your Winter 2018/2019 copy of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine and re-read Wrapping Your Brain around Getting Organized on page 76. This article will help you organize your crafting supplies.

When you’re thinking about storage, think about accessibility. If it’s easy to put your supplies away, you probably will. One thing I try to stay away from is lids—ugh. It’s much easier to put things away into containers without lids. Also, when you have something with a lid, there’s a tendency to stack other things on top of it; this makes access difficult for both using and putting things away. Open containers are easy access and easy clean up too.

Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019 51

THE ORGANIZED CRAFTER

Step 3– Strip your bulletin board

Bulletin boards can be useful and decorative, but all too often they end up as a convenient “catchall” for things we don’t want to put away. Generally, one layer is covered by the next layer, and the next layer… etc. until you can barely see the board underneath. Take a few minutes and strip everything off your bulletin board. Then give your board a crafty clean up; if it’s a basic board like mine, a coating of spray paint is a quick and inexpensive refresh. If you’ve got some time, use up some of your craft supplies to make it even more crafty and cute.

Next, add items back to the board, but organize your board into sections— Things to Do, Things to Remember, etc. Sometimes it’s helpful to add dates to things in bigger print or with a sticky note so they really pop out. This system will make it easier to pull them off the board when they are out of date. Personally, I find that I accumulate lots of notes and flyers about things to do; these are generally date driven, so adding a big date to them will help me remember to take them down. I was inspired by writing this article, so I gave my bulletin board a crafty facelift to match the walls in my office.

52 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

I added a couple of clear pockets to the board. I’ll used these for things that are regularly being referenced or removed, such as shopping lists, errand lists, and “Honey-do” lists. There are two magnetic strips—one in the Try section and one in the Buy section. These are great for recipes, coupons, etc. On the right side I used clothespins between each of the letters. Originally, I just laid them out that way to get even spacing between the letters, but it was pretty cute, so I glued them down!

One of the really cool things about gluing the clothespins to the frame of the bulletin board is that it created a natural “layering” effect, without burying anything. My birthday list is on top of my flight itinerary, but I can move the flight itinerary without moving the birthday list. In hindsight, I would have added more clips around the edges.

Step 4– Master your scraps Scraps can be a struggle for scrapbookers and card makers alike. We don’t want to be wasteful, but we don’t want to be overwhelmed by tiny pieces of paper either. Ask yourself this question, “If I had time to craft a little bit every day for the rest of my life, would I ever run out of paper?” There are a couple of ways you can keep your scraps under control, and the first one is THROWING SOME OF THEM AWAY! Did that give you a little stomach ache?

12″ × 6″. If you can’t get your brain around that, 6″ × 6″ is a good option. For card makers 4″ × 6″ is a nice usable size. Whichever size you choose, write your goal down and pin it on your newly organized bulletin board. When you’ve finished your project, throw away or add to your Purge Box any scraps that don’t meet your goal.

Organize the scraps you do keep—not with other scraps—but within the category where you are most likely to use them. For example, if you have Christmas scraps, they’re going to go in your Christmas section, football scraps are going to go into your sports/football section, and solid colours are going to be stored in your rainbow section. Storing your scraps with your other supplies in those categories will ensure that you see them and you USE them.

Before you begin your next project, set a goal for a realistic minimum scrap size. For scrapbookers, I recommend

Step 5– Define your workspace Where do you create? Is your workspace buried under stuff? If you’ve completed the first four things on this list, you’ve probably uncovered some precious work space. Often defining workspace physically can help you keep it clear. For scrapbooking, you need a minimum workspace of about 18″ × 18″ – and ideally something more like 18″ × 24″ so you can work on two pages side-by-side.

An 18″ × 24″ cutting mat is a GREAT way to define your space. If you prefer not to craft on top of the mat, it’s easy to move it out of the way. I generally craft on top of mine. When I clean up, my goal is to leave the mat empty. Your brain loves clear guidelines, and you’ll find it easier to tidy up after each crafting session when you know exactly what that means. You’ll LOVE always having a place to sit down and craft.

Step 6– Bring in your cleaning caddy Craft spaces are meant to get messy, but messy can feel overwhelming. A quick tidy up will make your space feel more inviting and inspiring. Take a few minutes to dust, vacuum, mop your craft area and you’ll find it’s easier to keep it tidy…at least for a while.

One more tip: find a small but efficient tool organizer for your must have tools. These are the things you use all the time, such as scissors, rulers, punches, corner rounders, etc. I also keep a jar with my “go-to” markers— all black.

Fine tune your photo organization system: read my blog post of the same name, on the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Blog— CreativeScrapbooker.ca/blogs

Figure 1

The day my three older brothers and I gathered to recreate some childhood photos as a surprise for our parent’s 60th wedding anniversary was one of those times for me! I’m not sure if I laughed harder recreating the photos with my brothers or when we revealed them on a large screen to the entire family at the anniversary party! Either way, it was worth the effort!

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

To be honest, we didn’t plan ahead much, so we had to get creative with whatever we could find around the house! With some closet raiding, tickle trunk finds and innovation, we were able to find or create props, clothing, and backgrounds that were a close match. This ended up being a huge part of the fun, and we were pretty proud with what we accomplished together!

TIPS to help recreate childhood photos:

1. Pick 5 to 10 of your favourite childhood photos to recreate. Too many options can become overwhelming. 2. Have extra prints made of the originals to refer to while taking the photos, so you can better replicate the details of body positions, angles, expressions, etc. 3. Gather supplies and props ahead of time, especially if you still own some of them! With clothing, focus first on matching the colour, then the style. 4. Editing the images after in Photoshop can really help match the look, as you can adjust any colours that might be slightly off and recreate the tones of the old photos. 5. Consider recreating the same photo with various people and generations, like I did with myself at age 4, my daughter at age 4, and then me again at age 52!! If you ever have the opportunity to try this with your own family or friends from years by gone, do it!!! The laughter reliving the memories while creating new ones is priceless! And please share the results with us if you do!!

Halloween In ancient times, All Hallows Eve—or Halloween—was a celebration for those who have passed on and marked the beginning of the winter season. It has evolved into a revelry of tricks and treats where anything is possible. On Halloween, young and old explore who they could be by dressing up as heroes or villains. They tour their neighborhoods and face all things ghoulish or frightening and cavort in the presence of danger. Enjoy these cards and scrapbook pages that celebrate all that is Halloween!

Fabulous Fall Wall Hanging Being from New York State, I have always been fascinated by the beautiful colours of fall. I decided to create a leaf wall hanging; I have recently seen quite a few on Pinterest and wanted to try my hand at making one. Using a leaf die as a base, colour and texture was added with inks and embossing powders. First order of business was a trip out to the yard to find a cool branch to hang my leaves from. The back yard yielded several branches, but I came across an old lattice fence knocked over and broken in a storm. The wood was the perfect colour, and after cleaning, I decided to go with that. The leaves were die cut from Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, as this is a heavy, thick cardstock, takes inks like a

dream, and you can load on the embossing powder and heat. I had so much fun exploring the way the powders and inks worked together. At one point I added Black Magic powder and then realized the colour was too harsh. No problem! I just added clear Blends2 ink, sprinkled gold powder on top, heated it, and I was back in business. And the bonus was that the black and gold melted together and created a unique colour effect! Wouldn’t it be great to create a set of these—one for each season? Or twist the last name of a newly married couple and give it for a housewarming or wedding present? A child’s name and little hanging coloured unicorns? So many possibilities! I hope you try one.

SUPPLIES USED • Clearsnap ColorBox Blends2 Eileen Hull inks • Clearsnap ColorBox stylus and white foam tips • Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock • Emerald Creek Craft Supplies Molten Dimension embossing powders • Sizzix die cutting machine, dies, and Twist & Style tool • heat gun • branch or stick to hang the leaves from • paste wax • 18 gauge aluminum wire • beads • jewelry tools • stapler • leather cord • die pick

Rotate the handle of the tool to twist wire to desired degree of tightness. 8. Poke holes in the leaves and thread gold twisted thread through the holes. 9. Add charms and beads in between or at the end for weight and interest. Wire wrap the leaves for a more textural effect.

2. Drop dots of Blends2 inks on a non-stick mat. Colour front and back of leaves using a stylus and white foam tips.

can make a striking addition to a greeting card or scrapbook layout. Typically made out of heavy paper with a glossy coating, bridge-sized cards are approximately 2.5″ wide and 3.5″ long. They also come in other sizes and shapes and feature a variety of different designs on their front and back. Cards can make an inexpensive promotional item for many companies. I have playing cards in my stash from restaurants, radio stations, beer and cigarette companies, and have picked up playing card souvenirs from many different places where I’ve travelled.

There’s something inherently appealing about playing cards. Maybe it’s the familiar design or the simple contrast in colours, but playing cards

Playing cards are readily available. Many of us have decks of cards lying about the house, and it does not matter if they are old or missing cards. You can also usually pick up a deck of cards at the local dollar or thrift store; a dollar or two will get you 52+ pieces of patterned paper to experiment with. Use the fronts and backs of the playing cards as pieces of patterned

paper ‘as is’ or use your punches and dies to cut shapes from them to use as backgrounds and embellishments. If using the front of the cards, use the numbers to highlight birthday or anniversary milestones, or add a playing card quote or pun that you’ve typed with your computer.

Some of these might include: • You’re a big deal • Thought you could use a hand • 29 Again • Flush with Love • Queen/King of my Heart • King for a Day • You’re Coming Up Aces • You’re Still Playing with a Full Deck • It’s not the cards you’re dealt, it’s how you play them You can also use playing cards as a sturdy base to create an altered card. Cover with gel medium or other adhesive, and adhere bits of paper, die cuts, fibers and other odds and ends to create a new piece of mixed media art.

Weekly Schedules

September Week 1

Who remembers Grandma pulling her mini-calendar out of her purse when considering an event request from friends or family? A portable calendar, daytimer, or appointment book is likely the original format of planners. They have been around for generations. The smart phone revolutionized planning and time management, and yet it is often an unwieldy and unreliable system. Because you can only see one day at a time, it can be tedious to find a time to schedule something. How many appointments have been missed simply because the date was filed away in your phone, out of sight, and therefore out of mind? Who has experienced ‘notification fatigue’, rendering that useful feature impotent? There is something about physically writing out a commitment or idea that makes it conclusive and memorable. Organizational planners have taken the industry by storm because they are practical, visual, and beautiful!

Okay Let’s Do This Jayme Loge Spruce Grove, Alberta SUPPLIES: American Crafts Heidi Swapp planner, Let’s Plan It stickers, American Crafts Kelly Creates Fineliner pens.

Ready to get started with your weekly planner? The first step is to put some thought into what your needs are and how a planner can support your time management. Some things to consider are ● Do you need to schedule events for work life, personal life, or both? Do you want one planner or several for all the areas of your life that need organization? ● Do you need to record a lot of information each day, or do you need enough space to jot down events that are out of routine? ● Will you be scheduling for just yourself or for your entire family? ● Do you need space to set up boxes for tracking daily habits or things like meal planning? ● How much space do you need for the beautiful things? Are you a big doodler and decorator, or do you just need room to write down activities?

Weekly planners can be broken down into three broad categories: basic, bullet journal, and designer. Take into consideration your identified needs, and then match your personal style to a planner. ● Basic Journal is your classic style of planner. It is preprinted based either on the calendar year or school year. It has varying amounts of space for daily planning, from hourly increments to a box big enough for a few important notes. ● Bullet Journal has blank pages, ready for your full customization. This style is ideal for a person who has very specific planning needs or wants space for creativity. You can totally change up how your pages look from week to week and day to day. This style does take more time to set up, but you are granted total creative license in return! ● Designer Journal has all the bells and whistles. It comes with different sorts of inserts and pages and is ideal for people who really thrive on

organization. There are products for goals, inspiration, schedules, and all the coordinating ephemera to match. If you love variety, themes, and stickers, a designer journal may be just what you and your creative soul need! For planners to be effective, you need to dedicate some time each week or month inputting activities. Successful use of planners means cultivating some habits and setting aside intentional time for your planning. Be consistent with a time of day, day of the week, or beginning of the month. It does not require hours at a time, but it does need to be regular. Having a planner that is portable makes it easier to add events as they come up, like a follow up appointment with the dentist. If a little portable planner does not meet your needs, keep a small notebook in your purse or wallet, or use your phone to jot down notes to add to your planner during your routine ‘planner time’.

Kim Gowdy, Sherwood Park, Alberta

SUPPLIES: Prima Marketing Traveler’s Journal, inserts, patterned paper, chipboard and Opal Magic, American Crafts Kelly Creates jewel metallic markers, Fineliner pens and stickers, Glue Dots Adhesives.

According to Kelly Klapstein, author and creative force behind Kelly Creates, “It takes time to save time. Planning and organizing your life means sitting down to think about events and routines on a daily basis. Making checklists, recording appointments, and scheduling your life is a way to de-clutter your mind and de-stress.” Which brings us to our next point... Your planner should not ever bring you stress! You can put as much dressing on it as you feel moved to do, but if all that planning is dipping into your bucket of joy, then really 76 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

consider if you have lost sight of the purpose of that little book. There is a lot of beautiful inspiration out there that can be useful in helping a newbie review the organizational tools available in planners or inspiring someone with a lot of experience with new ideas. It is okay if your planner does not look like it belongs in an Instagram post. It is okay if you have empty space in your book and your handwriting is messy! It is okay if you do not use all the features of your planner. Your planner is simply a tool to help you focus, organize, and stay on top of your busy life. It is a place for all your jumbled, restless thoughts; writing them in your

planner means you no longer have to juggle them around in your mind! I will be completely honest about the planner I use. I leave it out in our kitchen, and all family members can add or scratch out events as needed. Sometimes I colour code and make it pretty; sometimes I do not. And that is okay, because I know when my husband has a meeting and when my daughter has to get to a rehearsal, and that is my planner’s purpose! Most importantly, your planner should help you feel organized, focussed, and ready to take on most of what life throws at you. How you

The Foil Quill I totally get it. You practice and practice and just don’t feel good enough. I remember when I was learning how to use a brush pen. Honestly, I didn’t feel my writing was pretty enough for a very long time. Calligraphy is a journey, and even today—after 4 years of enjoying this art form— I am learning and growing. My style is still evolving. But what happens when you want to add some beautiful lettering and illustrations to your project without worrying about perfection? Using calligraphy stamps is one answer, but there is now another solution to “I want this to look exactly right.” American Crafts has developed the Foil Quill within the We R Memory Keepers brand.

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

78 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

HAND LETTERING

The Foil Quill is a device that works with digital cutting machines like the Brother ScanNCut, and can draw your words and designs using foil and a heated drawing tool. You can use any kind of cardstock or patterned paper to make cards, scrapbook layouts, home décor, and more. You can ‘foil’ any designs you already have or you can use one of the many available Foil Quill USB sticks, like the Kelly Creates Design Drive. 1

2 It is so cool for me to see my lettering in pretty foil of every colour! I used some birthday calligraphy for my scrapbook layout and a card. With all the gold accents and glitter paper, you don’t need to embellish anything. The shine does it all!

3

4

Follow the instructions for a simple, quick set up with your electronic machine. 1. Use removable washi tape to ensure that the foil is taped down really flat onto your paper. 2/3. Insert your Design Drive, and choose your pattern. Instead of clicking ‘Cut,” you will click “Draw.” (NOTE: I have set the slowest speed and the lightest pressure for the ‘Draw’ feature on the Brother ScanNCut.) 4. The Foil Quill, which is like a heated pen, will draw the image you have chosen. I usually use darker cardstock to make the foil pop with the greatest contrast, but any colour or paper is fine. The best part is pulling back the foil to reveal the beauty! < Even though I will not be putting away my brush pens any time soon, I am excited about using the Foil Quill to help me create projects for many different occasions.

Scraps of Info To keep with the gold foil elements, I wrote some journaling with my Kelly Creates Metallic Jewel pen.

Versatile

Vellum

BY JUDITH NAYLOR

Vellum elements on a card have a mysterious quality. They’re perfect for any romantic theme–such as weddings–or for features like clouds, snowy hills, or glass. Vellum is a translucent, plasticized cotton paper. It comes in two weights: a heavier, cardstock weight and a lighter, layering weight. Translucency is what makes vellum so attractive. It changes whatever is underneath, muting it and giving it a cloudy aspect. If you have only a bright sheet of coloured cardstock, you can cover it with vellum to produce a pastel version. If your printed paper dominates the sentiment, quiet that DSP by mounting the sentiment on a vellum backing. When vellum is dry embossed with a stylus, the surface turns white and puffed. It can be embossed in an embossing folder, heat embossed, die cut, or punched. There are so many techniques to use with vellum!

Tinted Vellum Want that dreamy quality of vellum, but wish it came in green? It can! Both green and purple inks were used to tint the vellum die cuts on this card. Any ink will tint vellum. Get a smooth application of colour by stroking the vellum with an ink pad. Buff the excess ink away with a cloth.

1. Apply ink to vellum.

2. Wipe off excess ink.

Happy Birthday Judith Naylor, Cambridge, Ontario SUPPLIES: All supplies by Stampin' Up!.

3. Cut out images using a die.

Oh No! My Die Cut Is Stuck in My Die! Vellum doesn't die cut or punch as easily as cardstock. The die cuts can get stuck in the pan of the die at narrow spots, like stems and snowflakes. 92 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

Here are some tips: 1. Use a straight pin to press through the relief holes of the die. Once you've got a bit released, use tweezers to gently pull the die cut free.

2. Put a piece of wax paper between the vellum and the die, and run through your machine. The die cut may still be in the die, but it releases much easier.

VERSATILE VELLUM

Lace Effect Vellum

White heat embossed flowers coloured with white pencil crayon look like lace on this feminine card. You can use any ink to hold embossing powder in place because vellum doesn't absorb ink. Be sure to use an anti-static powder tool to prep the surface.

1. Pounce vellum with an anti-static powder.

2. Stamp image and emboss.

Happy Birthday

3. Color the back side with a white pencil crayon.

Judith Naylor, Cambridge, Ontario SUPPLIES: Stampin' Up! cardstock, vellum, stamps, VersaMark ink, stencil and pearls, Martha Stewart embossing powder, Hero Arts ink, Mama Elephant die, Recollection sequins.

Oh no! I overheated the vellum! Curled corners? Buckled edges? You might fix it with one of these three tricks: 1. Heat the back of the vellum.

2. Place the vellum between two plates of an embossing machine and run it through. 3. Fussy cut your heat-embossed elements, and attach to a new sheet of vellum.

Scraps of Info Prevent overheating by preheating your heat tool before aiming it at your image. Once you see that the powder has melted, move to another area. Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019 93

VERSATILE VELLUM

Vellum Monoprinting This technique exploits the fact that ink sits on top of vellum, rather than soaks in. And bonus! You make three card fronts in the time it takes to make one!

Congratulations Judith Naylor, Cambridge, Ontario SUPPLIES: Stampin' Up! cardstock, vellum and ink, AlteNew stamps, Tonic Studios Tim Holtz stamp positioner, Offray ribbon.

1. Place the vellum in a stamp positioner. Arrange and stamp as usual. 2. Place the two cardstock pieces on top of the vellum, then ink and stamp again. 3. The vellum’s wet ink transfers to the cardstock, but imperfectly, resulting in a distressed image.

94 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019

Oh No! My Adhesive Shows! The thing we love most about vellum—translucency—makes it a challenge to attach. Liquid adhesives leave a darkish dot. Sheet adhesives cover the whole piece with adhesive, changing the cloudy white vellum to a cloudy version of whatever you're sticking it to. Hide adhesives behind sentiment strips, sequins or jewels, ribbon, die cuts, or wrap the vellum around the card. Use tiny drops of liquid adhesive when you can't hide it. Mysterious, changeable, versatile... let vellum’s dreamy nature inspire you today!

Scraps of Info Guarantee perfect registration for your three cards by making a corner of painter's tape to line the cards against.

Scraps of Info To mount the vellum panel, score ¼″ from the top edge, fold and attach to the back of a top folded card with strong adhesive.

The Struggle is Part of the Story a

It may be easier and more joyful to scrapbook our good times and happy memories, but there is great importance in confronting and including the tough stuff too. Loss, pain, fears, and world-altering trauma are impactful and sometimes even more influential in shaping how our life story unfolds. It is the times of trial where we find our strengths, discover hidden resources, and emerge Phoenix-like from the ashes, remade with wisdom and experience. It can take time to work through these events, but the simple acts of journaling and creating can help in the healing process.

For this project, I decided to play with my pigment inks on a gel plate. Because pigment ink stays wet for a long period of time, I thought this may be the perfect inky medium. Happily, I was right. I do believe I have opened a very creative can of worms. I have always known that pigment ink has the ability to mimic so many different mediums and is the most lightfast (fade-resistant) of inks. Now it is entering the world of printing with a gel plate. This fall I will be sharing more unique ways to use pigment ink with your gel plates in a class called “Creative Backgrounds for Cards” at the Great Canadian Scrapbook Carnival in Sherwood Park, Alberta, and Calgary, Alberta as well as at Scrapchicks Gone Wild event in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Follow along with me as I share some very addicting ideas that you may want to adopt for your upcoming projects. ~ SEPTEMBER ~ By Jack Taggart

As Autumn ignites, The leaves burn with ember glow. They fall like ashes. The lazy indulgence of summer is behind us, and a return to routine is as welcome as the cooler temperatures. The buzz of renewed energy is bustling all over our communities, and the fields and gardens are full of delicious produce ready for harvest. The scent of pumpkin spice everything fills the air along with gently swirling leaves. Fall is a feast for the senses, and so are these lovely readers’ projects!

Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2019 143

In the End Some stories are hard to tell. Not everything in our lives is a picture perfect moment. Some memories pull so hard at our heartstrings that the only escape is the tears that slowly find their way out. The hard stuff is part of our story. It is part of who we are—the rocks in our stream of life. In the end, without the rocks, the stream would have no music. This fall, take a moment to find a quiet spot, reflect, and heal. When you are ready, tell your story, remember, and grow.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THE WINTER ISSUE: • Travel Planners • Recycling Dictionary Pages • Inspired by a Heart • And so much more!
