LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Not Today, Corona COVID-19 has changed our lives in so many different ways. Some of the changes have been incredibly difficult and enormously disruptive to life as we have always known it. Others have opened up our inner creativity and resourcefulness. Through all the muck and guck, if you look closely you will find some silver linings to all this craziness. I started following and listening to Dr. Jody Carrington (a Clinical Psychologist) every morning while I enjoyed my morning coffee. One of her favourite phrases is “NOT TODAY, CORONA!” and honestly, it was the BEST motivational mantra as I made my way through the day. I loved finding her. I have loved watching all my friends create sourdough and share their trials and errors on social media. I can’t bake for the life of me, so I lived vicariously through them all. The home renovations industry is booming. The summer of 2020 will forever be known for backyard makeovers! Creating our special places in this world to relax and unwind is so important. We finally found the time to make those extra little changes. Here, we have re-connected with our closest family and friends.

At Creative Scrapbooker Magazine, we started a few different online communities—places for fellow crafters to meet, to share their work, to share tips and tricks, and to well, just keep us all connected. One of my favourite new groups is our Card of the Month Facebook Group. You need to join this group (Facebook.com/pg/creativescrapbooker/groups)! So many fabulous cards in all kinds of themes, shapes, and sizes. I love it! Each month we pick 32 cards and celebrate them in a Card of the Month voting bracket. Where YOU, THE PEOPLE, pick a monthly favourite. This card is crowned Card of the Month. It’s just for fun and everyone is loving it! As we move into the fall months ahead in this ever-changing world with our coffee cups in hand, let us start the day with a smile and whisper— Not Today, Corona. We got this. See you online, my friends! ~ Jackie

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

! g n i t c e n n o C We are

creativescrapbooker.ca/2020Great CanadianVirtualScrapbookCarnival

Over these past challenging months we have all participated in new, agile, and interesting ways to stay engaged with each other. COVID has become an era of unprecedented adaptability. Most notable in our business has been the move to virtual events! Attending consumer events to crop, shop, learn, and most importantly, connect with friends, has been a vital and exciting part of our industry. Simply put, we are a community that likes to get together! The event cancellations were understandable, and the impact to our industry was enormous. Our magazine was inspired by event organizers that quickly established virtual events. To my surprise, they were awesome! They have succeeded in engaging and inspiring our community from the safety of our homes. Not only are they fun, we are still connecting!!!

ssbeshopathome.com

At the end of the day, we are tactile creatures. There’s nothing quite like sitting with our friends at all-day crops where we see and feel the products and watch amazing techniques on display. So, as we transition to a “new normal,” we strive to continue to support and inspire crafters, both physically and digitally. I look forward to hugging y’all again soon, and hope you will join us virtually at an upcoming event! ~ Katharina

SOCIAL DISTANCING

As 2020 was born—a new year and a new decade—filled with promise and expectation, who could have predicted that our planet would soon go through a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic? The news cycle began to fill with snippets of this new Covid-19 virus until reality hit like a flash flood and extreme containment measures became our new reality. These are notable times, and scrapbookers and card makers have been diligently documenting how we pass our hours, days, weeks, and months at home, while flattening the curve. 18 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2020

Covid-19 When Covid-19 became a pandemic, it rocked our entire world. As is often the case when trials come, many turn to faith in search of comfort, wisdom, and God’s peace that passes understanding. So, it was no surprise that people began processing their journeys through art inside their Bibles. Here are some entries that I hope and pray will inspire you as well.

FRUGAL SCRAPBOOKER

Basics for every crafter! keepitsimplepaper.com Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2020 49

Over the years I have accumulated bottles of nail polish and different eye shadows that I don’t use anymore. Rather than tossing these out, I experimented with different techniques for using them for paper crafts. In order to extend my colour range, I discovered that my local dollar store had some different kinds of sparkly eye shadow and assorted bottles of cheap nail polish in bright colours, such as grass green and sunshine yellow.

Nail polish, which is basically an enamel varnish, can be used to paint metal, plastic, or wood veneer embellishments; paper die cuts; and letter stickers. Two coats are often needed for a smooth opaque finish, just like on your fingernails. Or, try this nail polish paper marbling technique: • Put an inch or two of warm water in a disposable dish. (I use an 8” × 10” plastic dish from the dollar store.) • Pour some nail polish onto the water. Different brands of nail polish act differently, but experimentation is part of the fun. • Place a piece of glossy paper onto the floating nail polish. The polish immediately sticks onto the paper. Set aside to dry. Wear rubber gloves or use tweezers to grab the paper if you want to avoid getting any polish on your fingers.

FALL IN LOVE Connie Nichol, Sherwood Park, Alberta SUPPLIES: Prima Marketing patterned paper and embellishments, MultiCraft CraftMedley wooden leaves, Ranger Dina Wakley Media Gesso, Stampin’ Up! cardstock, Glue Dots Adhesives.

Scraps of Info Connie used the end of a pencil and some eye shadow mixed into white gesso to stamp the dotted pattern on the page and sprayed a bit of eye shadow glimmer spray to add a subtle sparkle to the cardstock. Scraps of Info

Scraps of Info Connie used green eyeshadow to colour the leaves and embossed background and purple eye shadow for the flower petals.

When working with nail polish, make sure that your craft space is well ventilated to dissipate any fumes. Eye shadow typically has mica as one of its key ingredients, so it can be used like mica powders or chalks, although the colours are usually less intense than those in art products.

• Use eye shadow to highlight an embossed design or to colour stamped images or die cuts. Just use a sponge or brush and dab shadow onto the paper. To prevent the eye shadow from rubbing off, it must be fixed with a fixative spray. This can be purchased in art supply stores. For a quick and

Scraps of Info To make these cards, Connie used a Picket Fence Studios Life Changing Blender Brush to apply embossing ink through the Picket Fences Studios stencils. She then applied a few different shades of eye shadow using a cosmetic sponge and set the powder with a bit of hair spray.

easy option, hair spray can also be used as a fixative. Spray lightly. However, hair spray is unlikely to be archivally safe. • Mix powdered eye shadow with gesso, paint, texture paste, or even white glue to create a shimmery paint or paste. • Eye shadow will stick to a sticky surface, so try using it with heat and stick powder, various adhesives, and adhesive shapes. Embossing ink is also sticky, so stamp with embossing ink and brush on eye shadow to colour, or rub embossing ink through a stencil. • Eye shadow can also be used to create a sparkly glimmer mist spray.

Simply add some powdered eye shadow to rubbing alcohol or water in a small spray bottle, add a squirt of clear drying glue such as Ranger Glossy Accents or Mod Podge. Then shake and spray. If you use rubbing alcohol, the spray will dry quicker and not warp the paper as much. Add a few drops of re-inker or alcohol ink to your mixture if you want more colour in your spray mist.

Have some fun, and be inspired to upcycle your old makeup for creative touches on cards and scrapbook pages!

There are so many amazing photo-editing apps out there that can take your smart phone pictures to a whole new level. These apps allow you to do everything from adding text and adjusting colour to converting the photograph into an artistic masterpiece. Over the next few issues of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine, I’d like to share some of my favourite photo-editing apps with you and inspire you to get your photos off your phone and use them for paper-crafting projects. The Color Splash app gives photos a dramatic look by converting them to black-and-white and then allowing you to add back colour to a specific object or area. This app is very easy to use: basically you just paint the colour back into the picture with your finger. You can also invert the effect. This can be very eye-catching, especially if there is a lot of colour contrast in your picture.

The Exotic Lure of

Henna

Beautiful and intricate henna designs have adorned people for special occasions since at least the late Bronze Age (3000BC–1200BC). Rooted in Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu traditions (among others), these meditative designs have woven themselves through time and across cultures. It’s no wonder that such a unique form of expression and celebration continues to this day and that it provides inspiration for our papercrafts.

I have a secret formula for taking photos! I call it the 1-2-3 formula, and although it’s super simple and effective, it’s often overlooked! 1. WIDE – a photo taken farther away to establish the setting 2. MID – a mid-range photo to identify the main subject/topic 3. CLOSE – a tight, close-up photo showing details The 1-2-3 formula applies to almost every photo situation from portraits and family events through to scenic and nature shots. It helps you capture complete stories and memories, no matter what the occasion or subject.

78 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2020

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS This formula is especially valuable when travelling. We think we will remember all the exciting details of our trip, but it’s the photos that we rely on and use to relive the adventure once home. For example, seeing the Arc de Triomphe in real life in Paris was spectacular, but the 1-2-3 set of photos (Figure 1) are all critical to remind me of the magnitude, beauty, and intricate details of this structure.

Figure 2

Wedding photographers also heavily rely on this formula to capture the full event. At my niece’s wedding, I took a photo of her full dress, a mid-range to show her bodice, hair, and make-up; and then a close-up of her bouquet (Figure 2). All three photos together help portray the complete picture of the bride (which everyone wants to see). I simply repeated the formula all day during the ceremony, family portraits, and reception, giving her beautiful memories to relive their entire day. Another perfect opportunity to use the 1-2-3 formula is when going out to eat. We discovered a quaint French restaurant tucked into an archway on the streets of Paris (Figure 3). Include a photo of the restaurant sign, along with a quintessential close-up of the best French Onion soup on the planet, and voilà, we have a complete story about our evening out. Not only does using the 1-2-3 formula give you full context when looking back at the memories, but it makes for a great set of photos for a scrapbook page! Once you know the 1-2-3 formula, you will begin to see it everywhere and hopefully adopt it for yourself whenever taking photos! Then when you revisit your memories and scrapbook them, you’ll be thankful that you did! www.AllisonOrthner.com

TECHNIQUE TASTERS HEADER SEALED WITH GRANDPARENTS HERE A KISS

by Kelly Klapstein

Add Lettering to Your Fall Table DĂŠcor

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering. One project I return to again and again for every season is making place cards for holidays and special occasions. They are really quick, and if you don’t want to doodle or draw and paint, you can use stamps. Fall always inspires me to get creative with colour, and I decided to make some leaf-themed place cards for our Thanksgiving table setting.

HAND LETTERING

1. Cut a rectangular piece (approx.

3. Cut around the leaf halfway, and

3.5” × 4”) of watercolour paper. In the centre, draw a large leaf on an angle and a line border around the edges of the paper. (This is a simple doodle and doesn’t have to be perfect.)

cut to the left and right edges of the paper.

4. Write each guest’s name on the card.

2. Paint the leaf with any colours you

5/6. Cut and fold a piece of cardstock

like. I chose red and orange and blended them together. Let dry completely.

as the base of the place card. Adhere the leaf/name card to the folded ‘tent.’

With these five steps, you can make a bunch of place cards very quickly. Your kids can help you too! If you have a ‘large’ leaf stamp that you would rather use, you could paint it with watercolours. Your leaves can be any shape or colour. They will brighten your table and make your guests smile!

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter

By Tiffany Spaulding

Dollar Store to Designer – Getting your craft room organized for any budget

Finding the right way to organize your supplies and stay within your budget can be a challenge. The best plan is to choose a few good quality organizational pieces that will last a lifetime for things you will always have, and then fill the rest of your room/closet/craft corner with less expensive pieces that can change along with your crafting habits.

1/ Start with a Shelving System that Works...

Stamp-n-Storage – These products are designed specifically for paper-crafting, so they address the dimensions and products that are commonly used by scrapbookers and card makers. The quality is top of the line. Stamp-n-Storage Systems are component driven; you can start with one or two pieces and add to your system as budget and space allow. IKEA – Kallax – The newer version of the Expedit shelf, the Kallax is good quality for a great price. If you’re trying to stay within a moderate budget, you may want to start with a Kallax or two. There are several 98 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2020

configurations to choose from. (Stamp-n-Storage makes a few inserts that will fit within the Kallax shelves.)

The Offer Up App – This app (or others, such as LetItGo) is a great place to find used shelving and save a few bucks. If “reduce, reuse, repurpose” is part of your life philosophy, Offer Up

could be a great place to purchase shelving or to sell something you’re no longer using in order to finance your new purchase.

2/ Add Permanent or Portable Components that Work with the Way You Craft Before you start adding components to organize specific products, think about the way you craft. If you only craft at home in the same location, permanent type products are ideal for you. If you travel to crops, classes, friends’ homes, or just around your own home, you’ll want to be sure your storage choice is portable; this will save you time, energy, and frustration when packing and unpacking for a crafty adventure.

Permanent Stamp-n-Storage inserts, Best Craft Organizer inserts, and crates/larger boxes are all permanent. These items will either be fixed in place or will be too heavy to move around. When you’re creating a permanent space, consider the idea of being able to reach the maximum number of supplies with the minimum effort. A “U”-shaped workspace and a chair on wheels is ideal.

Storing your supply storage bags or paper storage boxes vertically will work on a shelf or in a crate or tote. Rather than piling things on top of each other horizontally in your crop tote or storage tote, if you put your things vertically, you’ll be able to pull out what you need without digging to the bottom.

Use paper trays to create your own mini drawer system and take your shelf from piled to filed. Office style paper trays, and small baskets, are inexpensive and readily available everywhere from the dollar store to Target or Walmart. They come in a couple of sizes and heights, so be sure you measure your baskets before you purchase your trays. The paper trays below are from Office Depot, the hanging basket is an accessory available at IKEA.

Adding inserts to your IKEA cubes or Stamp-n-Storage shelves will maximize the shelf space. To get the best use out of your shelving, think “left to right, top to bottom, back to front.” This is true for both permanent and portable options.

BestCraftOrganizer.com has a handy tool that will help you choose the perfect inserts for your IKEA shelves; you can find it at: bestcraftorganizer.com/cabinet-designer

Portable Portable is not just going to a crop, class, or event, it’s moving things around your home too. If you craft at the dining room table or have things stored in another room, closet, or shelf and you need to pull them out, portability is really important. Small baskets are ideal for holding things like re-inkers, square ink pads, washi tape, ribbon, embellishments, etc. Load the baskets onto the shelves of the paper trays, and voilà: you’ve got a mini drawer system. Pull the drawer of supplies out and bring it to your workspace. When you’re finished, slide it back into place. No stacking, piling, or balancing required.

3/ A Few More Organizational Tips Try to avoid stacking. If you need to move something to get to something underneath, you will find it inconvenient and frustrating. Often you can solve this dilemma by storing things like paper pads vertically rather than horizontally.

Maximize Shelf Space If you’re using a regular shelving system, try adding more holes to the frame of the shelving unit. This will allow you to space shelves closer together or farther apart and create a better fit for your supplies. Remember, you want to fill your space left to right, top to bottom, back to front.

By Cathie Allan

Welcome to another episode of Cathie’s Choice brought to you by my favourite crafting book, Creative Scrapbooking Magazine—the magazine with a book-like quality and feel! For this issue I created a huge project quite by accident. What started out as a simple Christmas card grew into a Christmas wall hanging I can’t wait to hang in the entry of my home. My goal was to combine the techniques that I taught in two separate classes and apply them to entirely different projects. One class was a pop-up card with a detachable ornament, and the other was a tri-fold pocket card. Both classes are loaded with unique techniques. I love to share techniquerich classes and present multiple “jump off” projects, so the participants can see that the ideas I am sharing are not just limited to the project they are creating that day. A good class should inspire new ideas. I think I achieved this in these two classes, and I love that the ideas I shared in these classes grew and became these two new and unique projects that bear little resemblance to the originals. So when you take a class from me or another creative soul, make sure you venture beyond what you were taught; combine techniques from one class with techniques from another and create something totally new. Technique-rich classes are such a window to endless creativity. I hope I get to play with you in a class soon. Let’s inspire each other and create way outside of our boxes!
