LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER: KATHARINA DOYLE

Cluttercore ~ Celebrating Creative Chaos Simply put, Cluttercore is an oxymoron— an organized mess that achieves an aesthetically pleasing state. The starting point is when we fill our space with things that remind us of what and who we love beyond our four walls. This is something I have done a lot over the last 18 months. The end point is when we realize it all comes together beautifully. For many of us, the Cluttercore trend perfectly describes our craft rooms. Filled with gorgeous abundance, these rooms inspire the eye and the mind. We proudly display our favourite supplies, finished projects, and the random things we picked up at events over the years. Mismatched belongings that reveal our memories, interests, and personalities. It all comes together to make us feel happy and comfortable. Like a scrapbook that tells our story. These rooms are where our best creativity begins.

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter 12 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021

Good Cluttercore requires some intentionality. Random clutter can be confusing and even stifle creativity. Help is here. In this issue, “The Organized Crafter,” Tiffany Spaulding will take us on a 12-week Organizational Challenge. She will focus us on one area of our craft supplies each week. I am no neat freak, but I know I am happier and more productive when I have good Cluttercore. I am inspired, AND I can find what I need. Right now, my brushes are displayed in an old, vintage milk glass. ~ Katharina

If you like colouring, there is a seemingly limitless supply of free colouring pages on the Internet that you can use to create cards or make one-of-a-kind embellishments for scrapbook pages. Search the Internet for specific themes with a phrase that is some version of ‘free flower coloring’ or ‘free butterfly coloring page.’ Then scroll through the images and right-click to save the image. Simply print onto cardstock, watercolour or patterned paper and customize by colouring and doodling with pens, pencils, markers, and ink.

There are also more specific places to look for colouring projects on the Internet. For example, pen manufacturers often offer free colouring pages on their websites. Be sure to check out www.zebrapen.com/artstudio/creative-activities/ for some fun pages and printable cards. Alternatively, your favourite colouring book author might have free Internet downloads available. Once you start looking, you will find the perfect free colouring page to enhance almost any project.

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter

By Tiffany Spaulding

12 Week Organization Challenge Are you ready to get your craft stash organized? Over the next 12 weeks we’ll focus on one area of your craft stash a week. We’ve set up a page on the CSM website where you’ll find downloads, videos, tips and tricks. www.CreativeScrapbooker.ca/12WeekGetOrganized-Challenge Each Tuesday, on the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Facebook page (starting Sept 13th, 2021), we will post the weekly challenge and all of the links you’ll need, so mark your calendars and join us!

bath. Write down your rewards and number them 1 to 12. • Gather your supplies. • Purchase organization products, if needed. • Visit the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine 12 Week Challenge web page.

Week 2 – Paper & Scraps Organizing

Week 3 – Embellishment Organization Remember that you want to try to keep things together that you use together. That means sorting and organizing your embellishments by theme, holiday, or colour, rather than by “type.” This idea can be hard to get your brain around, but think about working on a project. For example if you are working on a birthday scrapbook page, you want to see all of your choices in one place.

Week 1 – Plan to Be Organized Having a good system for getting organized is a necessity. The best system for craft supply organization is The 4 Section System—Alphabets & Numbers; Themes & Sentiments; Holidays & Seasons; The Rainbow.

What you need Vertical paper storage boxes, label tabs/ sticky notes, dividers, scrap pockets

What to do • Set aside time in your schedule for organizing. • Watch The 4 Section System Video and/or download and print the 4 Section System from the website. You can also find this information in the Winter 2018 issue – The Organized Crafter, Wrapping Your Brain Around Getting Organized. • Create a Themes & Sentiments list. • Write down your goals. • Commit to rewarding yourself. Choose 12 rewards, such as new paper pad from your favourite scrapbook store, coffee with a girlfriend, or a long, hot, bubble

What to do • Use a label maker or marker to label your sticky notes/label tabs to match the categories from the Themes & Sentiments list you created last week. • Create dividers for each category. • Load a vertical paper storage box with all the labeled dividers. • Start sorting paper a few inches at a time. • When your first box fills up, split the contents of the box between two boxes and continue sorting. • Finish by adding scraps into scrap pockets for each category.

64 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021

What you need Embellishment organizers that will allow you to combine and conquer your embellishment stash. Small zip-lock style bags are handy for things like buttons, brads, eyelets, etc. What to do • Sort your embellishments using The 4 Section System. • Store them in your embellishment organizer.

Week 4 – Dies

Week 5 – Stamps (all types)

Week 7 – Punches

Cataloguing your dies is the best way to know what you have and where they’re stored. The chances are good that this week will just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cataloguing your dies, but that’s okay. Set your goal for the week and get busy. What you need

If you did the Week 4 Challenge, you’ve started a catalogue of dies. Now follow the same steps and add your stamps. There is no need to create a separate catalogue for stamps; in fact, you’ll find that having all of your “tools” listed together by theme/sentiment/season will help you use them more often. What you need

You guessed it—these all need to be added to your catalogue too. Remember, you may need to punch out multiple examples if your punch needs to be represented in multiple categories. Fill your punch pack(s), shelves, or rails with your punches first. Add numbers to your punches, give the storage container you’re using a label, and then start the cataloguing process.

A binder (I recommend 12″ × 12″), blank sheets of white paper (or any solid colour will work), scrap paper for cutting samples of each die in your collection, and a die storage system—magnet sheets and pockets, Die File, etc.

What to do • Load your storage system/storage containers with dies. Don’t worry about the order or placement of the dies in the storage system. • Label each container in your die storage system. • Create catalogue sheets for each of the themes, sentiments, holidays, and seasons on your list. • Work through each die storage container; create an example of each die, and add it to the appropriate catalogue page in your binder. Label each example with the container name/number where the dies are stored.

Additional pages for your catalogue (see Week 4), ink, and storage containers for your stamps.

Week 6 – Embossing Folders Yes, you’ll want to catalogue your embossing folders too! Follow the cataloguing steps from Week 4 and get your embossing folders sorted, labeled, catalogued, and stored. The fastest way to create an example of your embossing folders is to do a “rubbing” of each embossing folder in your catalogue.

Week 8– Inks, Pens, and Markers Now we’re on to a new type of catalogue– the colour catalogue. Each ink/pen/marker manufacturer produces a list of the colours that they produce. I recommend printing the “Peek-a-Hue” colour chart off the 12 Week Challenge page of the website and grouping all your colour agents together by colour for easy reference and comparison. Check out the video on the webpage for details on how to use the “Peek-a-Hue” colour chart.

Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021 65

ORGANIZED CRAFTER

Week 9 – Glitter Glues, Glitter, Paint, Embossing Powder, and any other colourful stuff Last week you worked through your inks, pens, and markers. This week you’ll want to add all of your other colouring agents to your colour catalogue. Follow the same process using the “Peek-a-Hue” colour charts or print colour charts from the manufacturer website(s).

What you need Storage for photos and mementos, computer storage system for your digital photos, plain paper for creating sorting guides, and labels (I like sticky notes.). What to do • Sort your photos into chronological order, either in photo storage boxes or digitally. • Label the boxes/digital photos. • Sort the mementos chronologically as well. • Create a project planner by combining the pictures and mementos into a single “holding album.”When you’re ready to create scrapbook pages, everything will be organized and ready.

Week 12– Adhesives I saved this for last because it’s the easiest—fast and simple. Rolls, sheets, glue dots, runners…the list is endless, and I’m guessing their locations in your craft room might be as well. Adhesives are something we use on nearly EVERY project, yet they’re not always easily accessible. Gather them up and find an accessible, home for them.

Week 11– Tools

Week 10 – Photos & Mementos

Cropodile, Punch boards, stamp blocks, scissors, rulers…you’ve invested in them, now you need to use them. But before you can do that, you’ve got to find them. What you need An accessible container to hold your always used tools on your desktop.

GENERAL ADVICE Work in small batches, regardless of what you’re sorting—from photos to paper—because it will become overwhelming if you don’t see some progress. Small batches let you work start-to-finish, and that helps your brain stay focused.

Keeping your photos and mementos organized can be the difference between getting pages done or becoming overwhelmed. This week we’ll begin the process of sorting your printed and your digital photos, along with rounding up all of those wayward mementos.

Be sure to visit our 12 Week Challenge website for more step-by-step instructions on completing your 12 Week Get Organized Challenge!

What to do: • Look around your workspace for a space to keep your tool collection. Ideally, this should be on your desktop or on a shelf within easy reach of your workspace.

Watercolour Scene Inside a Shape I was recently smitten by the watercolour art of Canadian artist Patricia Garcia. A soft and subtle eagle soaring with a stunning mountain scene portrayed inside the shape of the bird captivated me. I immediately reached out to Patricia to learn more about her technique and see if I could do something similar inside my Bible.

ON THE WINGS OF EAGLES Patricia Garcia, Ottawa, Ontario SUPPLIES: Canson watercolour paper, Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton watercolours.

BIBLE ART JOURNALING DO NOT DWELL ON THE PAST Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Ranger clear gesso, Pelikan and Sakura watercolour paints, unknown white acrylic paint.

Scraps of Info Watercolour shapes and scenes definitely work best on watercolour paper, but I was able to create a similar look inside my Bibles by using a gesso base and a little less water.

STEPS FOR A WATERCOLOUR SCENE INSIDE A SHAPE

1. Gesso page and let dry. Select a shape, and very lightly pencil draw or trace the outline onto your page. Choose something identifiable, but without a lot of details. Some parts of your image can be defined, while other parts can “drift off.”

2. Using water, lightly wet a portion inside of your shape. Be careful to not go over the pencil line. While the paper is still wet, begin to add watercolours (use 3 complimentary colours), allowing them to overlap and mix slightly. Dab off extra if needed.

3. Play! Continue watercolouring, including some darker layers and some “drifting off” places. Let dry. Next, use more concentrated watercolours and a thinner brush to add in a scene or objects inside the shape. Finish with random splatters. Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021 69

76 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021

Scraps of Info Creative Memories Family Tree Laser Cut Embellishment is perfect for documenting your family lineage, but it can also be used for a striking fall layout!

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

USING LASER CUT EMBELLISHMENTS ON A SCRAPBOOK PAGE

1. Choose a background paper and a layering paper. Cut the top layer to

11.5″ square.

3. Carefully trim off the overhanging branches with All-Purpose

scissors.

5. Use a Dual-Tip Pen to write journaling and captions for photos on the

die-cut tags that come with the Family Tree Laser Cut Embellishments.

2. Adhere Family Tree Laser Cut to 11.5″ square with some branches

overhanging one edge. Use Repositionable Adhesive, which is great for adhering all the little laser cut shapes without getting adhesive all over the place.

4. Punch several leaves from coordinating cardstock with the Spring Leaf

punch and the Five Leaf punch.

6. Arrange and adhere photos with Tape Runner Adhesive. Add journaling

tags in clusters with punched leaves and sticker embellishments.

Hello Fall Nicole Wright, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Wild Whisper NWD patterned paper, Ranger Alcohol inks, Blending Solution and Craft Heat Tool, Sizzix die, unknown wood sign and fall embellishments.

78 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021

Scraps of Info Nicole designed the elements on her sign using the NWD Baubles & Bows collection from Wild Whisper.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

FALL WALL DÉCOR USING ALCOHOL INKS & PATTERNED PAPER

1. On a piece of patterned paper from the NWD Baubles & Bows

Collection from Wild Whisper, add a few drops at a time of the alcohol inks to build up the colour and fill the paper to the desired amount.

3. Use a Ranger Heat It Craft tool to help the alcohol inks blend even

further across the paper. This creates a beautiful pooling pattern of colours while drying. You can blend the whole piece of patterned paper or leave spots of the patterned paper exposed.

2. Working in small sections, use the Ranger blending solution to blend

the alcohol ink. The slight gloss of the Wild Whisper paper allows a little extra time to work and blend the alcohol ink. Squeeze the blending solution onto the drips of alcohol ink and watch them blend.

4. Once you are happy with the design, die cut the leaves. The alcohol

inks bleed through to the back side of the patterned paper, creating not one but two options to use. Curl the edges of the leaves or leave them flat. Add extra embellishments of your choice to complete your Fall Wall Décor.

HELLO SUNSHINE Connie Nichol, Sherwood Park, Alberta SUPPLIES: Carta Bella Paper Co. patterned paper and die cuts, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, PicCollage App.

Article by Connie Nichol.

PICCOLLAGE PicCollage is an App for IOS, Android and Windows that easily lets you make collages from your photographs. The basic functions are free, but in-app purchases open up all sorts of stickers, backgrounds and fancy templates if you feel like investigating further. It’s easy to use. Once the App is open, select your photos and then click the check mark in the upper right-hand corner. If you then select ‘layout’, the App will show you a number of possibilities for collage templates for the number of pictures that you have selected. You can also do this the other way around by selecting your grid first, then adding photos one-by-one. You can add text or stickers, modify the thickness of the grid lines and round your photo corners. This is a great and easy way to get multiple small photos onto a single print. All of the projects shown here use a different style of grid from the PicCollage App.

THAT

NE TIME...

There is comfort in routines and familiarity. But lasting (and hilarious) memories are made by stepping out of everyday routines and trying something new or unexpected. Nothing gets the adrenaline going like facing the unfamiliar or learning a new task. And of course, some things become epic when they are enjoyed both by the doer and the observer.

Can we expect an international wave of dinosaur-headed scrapbookers swarming their communities this fall, making epic memories? .

Halloween Hand Lettering

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

There are so many wonderful ways to use your lettering to create fantastic Halloween projects. One of my favourites is Halloween word art. Word art is when you draw large letters to form a word and then you use each letter as a little “canvas” with designs inside. 108 Creative Scrapbooker | Fall 2021

LOVE LETTERS

First, let’s learn how to draw simple spider webs. 1. Start at a point and draw 3 or 4 lines radiating outwards. My lines are curved, but you could draw them straight too. 2. Beginning where all the lines meet, draw curved lines between the radiating lines. 3. Don’t forget the spiders! I draw a single line down from the web and add an oval and 8 legs.

For the word “Boo,” draw large block letters with your pencil onto watercolour paper. You could also use white cardstock. If you’re uncertain about drawing your own letters, use your Brother ScanNCut or make your own template by typing “Boo” onto a word document on your computer and printing it.

Colour in your letters. I wanted a bright, happy purple, so I used a Zebra Mildliner Highlighter pen.

Outline your letters in black. I used a Zebra Black Zensations pen.

Draw your webs inside the letters. I drew two webs: one at the top and one at the bottom of each letter. Add your spiders. I drew one spider dangling from the top webs inside each letter. Trim your paper if necessary. Mat and adhere to your card base.

This could be a great project for kids! Happy Halloween!

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Storytelling through Photos By Allison Orthner

I LOVE A GOOD STORY. Comedy, romance, suspense, intrigue. I love it all! As humans, we are drawn to stories. It is why we watch TV, read novels, and go to the movies. It is also the foundation of why we scrapbook—to tell our stories. With photography, every photo captures a moment, but not all photos tell a story.

Why are some photos just a picture, while others draw you into a story? I’ve been analyzing this recently while following a few “photog-crushes” of mine (JeremyCowart.com and BenjaminCole.com), who are master storytellers through their images. This type of photo not only requires skills in composition, lighting, etc., but storytelling images also seem to contain a few other common traits:

EMOTION. We are drawn to emotion, especially extremes: happy is nice, but ecstatic is magnetic; sad is moving, but despondent is compelling. In Figure 1, we are immediately drawn to the deep emotion on the face of the man dancing with the bride. It tugs on our heart, and once we know the real story, it intensifies even more.

FALL Family Photos Every fall, for almost 30 years now, I capture an annual family photo (Figure 1). It all started back in 1992 with my October wedding and the hopes of including beautiful fall colours in our portraits (Figure 2). Unfortunately, most of the leaves had fallen and disappeared by then, but it triggered an annual quest that has lasted decades! In the earlier years, I made my family sit on the ground right in the leaves in an attempt to capture the look of fall in our annual family portraits (Figure 3), and once we even climbed up into a tree! (Figure 4)

BY ALLISON ORTHNE

R

However, as both my children and photography skills grew, I learned how to capture the leaves blurred in the background instead. This allows the focus of the portrait to be my family, with the fall colours simply enhancing the image. Figure 1. THE REAL STORY: This bride danced with her uncle who lost his wife (her aunt) the week prior to the wedding. Before passing, the aunt requested this dance in her honour. LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Although it took an embarrassing number of years and a lot of trial and error, I finally learned the best tips and tricks for capturing beautiful fall family photos!

1. Find some colourful trees. The good news is that you don’t need many!! When one of my clients asked for fall photos late in the season, I was able to deliver their vision after finding ONE single, solitary tree that still had some colourful leaves (Figure 5). The result is that you don’t even notice the snow on the ground! 2. Step away from the trees! The biggest mistake is standing too close to the trees when what you really need is distance! The farther away you are from the trees, the greater and more beautiful the blur. All you really want to capture is the colours of the leaves, not the details. 3. Use your zoom. To increase the blur even more, use a zoom lens and zoom in closer on your subjects (Figure 6). Also, on some cameras you can adjust your aperture or f-stop to a lower number to increase the blur even more. Don’t go so low, however, that you struggle to capture eyes and faces looking sharp and in focus.

A few final tips would be to avoid direct sun, wear clothing in colours that complement the great outdoors, and take lots of photos and combinations of family members together. Finally, be sure to print, frame, display and scrapbook them to be enjoyed for decades to come!

The Beauty of Slimline Rubber Stamps What is trending right now? Slimline cards! What we used to call business-size greeting cards (because they fit into a business-size envelope) now have a fresh new identity as “slimline.” I am so excited, as this new trend is giving us all larger, longer, bigger, rubber stamps to play with.

Impression Obsession has given us some amazing new slimline rubber stamps, and I have used three of them to create this scrapbook page about me. This is only the second time I have created a page about myself. Over the last 40 years, I truly have focused on family and friends, so it was due time I did a little something about myself. This page is not even finished yet.

FOR YOU Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Impression Obsession stamps and dies, Tsukineko pigment ink, Gamsol, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, unknown blending stubs, pigmented markers, fibers, kraft cardstock and blending brushes.

I have so much more I want to add but I needed to submit this in time for this issue, so I have paused here. I do believe I NEED to 3/D some of the flowers, and of course I NEED to add more tiny photos of people and things I love. I also created a quick, slimline card so you could begin to see the versatility of these stamps for both card making and scrapbooking.

In the End

The kids’ school supplies have been purchased, backpacks have been filled, haircuts and gym clothes have been crossed off the list. Whether you are waving goodbye to your eager adolescent, holding hands as you walk to school with your kindergartener, or watching your college student drive off, this is the season of beginnings. New adventures, new friends, new routines, and maybe even some happy little tears. In the end, whatever you are feeling, capture it. Tell the stories.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THE WINTER ISSUE: • Gel Printing • Inspired by Scandinavian Folk Art • Christmas Cards • And so much more!
