LETTER FROM JACKIE LUDLAGE, FOUNDING EDITOR

Liam (my 16-year-old son): Mom I think we should get a wiener dog. Me: A what? Liam: A wiener dog and we can name him Humphrey. Me: Liam we already have three cats and Lucy (our border collie). Sorry bud, but no. Fast forward 5 months. Meet Gus our miniature Dachshund. LOL!

To say I have a soft spot for animals is putting it lightly, and my children definitely use this little piece of information to their advantage. Homeless cats who are supposed to stay outside find there way into our home along with a cat tower for them to relax on. Bird feeders are everywhere to keep all our little birds happy, not to mention I secretly feed our squirrels. Lucy is more than a dog; she basically runs the house. AND now we have Gus. I love them all. I am one of those people who believe everyone needs a pet. They bring so much joy, love, loyalty, and they have a weird way of teaching us what is really important in life. My cats relax whenever they need to. They listen to their little bodies and just take a snooze.

10 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

The birds wake up every morning singing, grateful for a new day. My dogs snuggle as often as they can, play as often as they can, show love every chance they get, live in every single moment, AND forgive. They forgive and love unconditionally. It truly is their greatest gift. This issue we have an entire feature dedicated to PETS! (Page 30). Our readers submitted so many fabulous projects starring their furry and feathery friends that it melted my heart. BEST SECTION EVER!!!! I can see and feel all the love and totally GET IT! Pets fill spots in our hearts that we didn’t even know were empty.

From my crazy, little animal-filled house to yours, we wish you hours of snuggles, wet little kisses, afternoons relaxing in the sun, and tons and tons of giggles! Jackie PS – Thank you, Liam, for your persistence. I can’t imagine life without Gus.

LETTER FROM KATHARINA DOYLE, FOUNDING PUBLISHER

Imagination and Heart Are All You Need! If you’re open to it, inspiration is everywhere. Just open your senses and let it in. What causes sudden ideas and enthusiasm? For some, a falling apple. For others it’s watching children create. For me, it’s when someone tries something new…with abandon. That moment they decide to take a risk and go for it even though they may fail. It always motivates me to reconsider the thing I have been hesitant to try. I’ve noticed that inspired new ideas sometimes come to me fully formed; “Yes! I know exactly what I am going to do!” Other times they slip into my awareness while doing some simple and quiet task,

Imagination & Heart Katharina Doyle, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: The Robin’s Nest patterned paper, My Mind’s Eye My Colors cardstock, Camelot Fabrics adhesive felt, Kelly Creates Black Fineliner pen, Kaisercraft Pearls, unknown ribbon, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L E-Z Runner and 3D Foam Squares.

like weeding the garden or walking the dog. The idea for a new layout, for example, was floating around in my head, and I needed a peaceful moment to recognize it. As we enter another year of publishing this magazine, I continue to be inspired by the people I talk to every day. From business owners to subscribers, I love the personal connections we create. It is your courage with new ideas, reusing old ideas, and the help you give each other that keeps this fresh and the ideas flowing. Hug hard and talk to you soon, Katharina

TOTALLY TOUCHABLE!

Scrapbook pages are always a visual feast. Carefully-chosen embellishments add details about the stories that are contained in the pictures they feature. Yet sometimes, tactile elements invite you to do more than just look. Interesting textures, soft feathers, glittery gems, and embossed patterns can really draw you in and make you want to seize the moment yourself. Go ahead and touch!

Bible Journaling

Chalk Couture I love stencils and use them all the time in my art, so when I discovered Chalk Couture I couldn’t wait to try them in my Bible! What makes these different from other stencils? They are thin, sticky stencils with silk screen openings, allowing more intricate details without needing “bridges” between elements. My concern was using them on the fragile pages of my Bible, but I discovered a way to make it work!

BIBLE ART JOURNALING

WALK BY FAITH Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Chalk Couture stencil, paste, and fuzzing cloth, Ranger gesso and Tim Holtz Distress inks, Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stencil, uni-ball Signo pen.

Scraps of Info The key to successfully using Chalk Couture inside your Bible is prepping the page with gesso first, removing some of the stickiness of the stencil using the Chalk Couture fuzzing cloth, and finally being extra gentle when removing the stencil.

STEPS FOR USING CHALK COUTURE IN YOUR BIBLE:

1. Apply a layer of gesso to page. Let dry. Fuzz your stencil to remove some stickiness, and then place on page, making sure edges around the openings are secure.

2. Use a small squeegee to apply a solid layer of Chalk Couture paste on the stencil design. Scrape off excess, and return to jar. Repeat with other colours.

3. Gently peel off stencil and place immediately in water to clean. Let paste dry completely. Then finish your page with other creative techniques and journaling.

Hardware stores are often full of unexpected and frugal treasures for scrapbookers and card makers. Take some time to browse the aisles of your favourite store, or check out the hardware aisle of dollar stores for inexpensive tools and unique embellishments. I also often wander through my husband’s stash of goodies in the garage looking for flat metal objects or things that might make good stencils. Here are some ideas on useful hardware-type items to get you started:

· sandpaper, steel wool, brushes, and sponges · duct tape, electrical tape, painters’ tape, and foil tape

· mesh drywall tape · laminate, paint, or wallpaper samples · washers, hinges, cotter pins, flat clips, and latches · putty knives, tweezers, utility knives, and zip ties · plastic and metal screening and eavestrough guards · caulking and adhesives · twine and string Every hardware store is a little bit different and may offer other possibilities, such sheets of wood veneer, funky stencils, or interesting bits of wire or chain. Just keep your eyes open for possibilities.

BLOOM Connie Nichol Sherwood Park, Alberta SUPPLIES: Simple Stories patterned paper and stickers, The Crafter’s Workshop stencil, Ranger Tim Holtz Distress ink, Brother sewing machine, American Crafts Kelly Creates Fineliner pen, laminate sample tags, washers and caulking from the hardware store.

Scraps of Info

Connie used the Stripes Tim Holtz stencil from Stampers Anonymous to create the background on her card.

SPRING HAS RETURNED Connie Nichol, Sherwood Park, Alberta SUPPLIES: MultiCraft Forever in Time cardstock, Stampers Anonymous stencil, Quietfire Design stamp, Elizabeth Craft Designs die, Prima Marketing flowers and feathers, Ranger Archival ink, caulking from the hardware store.

I experimented with hardware store substitutions for texture paste and found that silicone caulking was my favourite. A tube only costs about $2.50 and goes a long way. Just smooth it through various stencils and let dry. It does dry quickly and can be coloured before or after use with various kinds of ink or paint. Although it is a low odour product it does have a bit of a smell so make sure your craft area has good ventilation.

The sentiment on Connie’s card is from the Impression Obsession Grunge Map stamp collection.

Duct tape makes a really fun card background. Just lay strips of duct tape onto a card base and dry emboss using an embossing folder. Connie got different colours of duct tape in the hardware aisle of the dollar store. A plastic zip tie and a piece of metal tape measure can substitute for ribbon.

(Figure 1)

My dad had a heart attack at age 84. As I sat in the hospital with him, it began to sink in how we never know when “that time” will come. Although death is inevitable, it always seems to catch us off guard. I’ve lost a best friend at age 12 and another at 45. Both were sudden and unexpected. Although my dad was older, it still hit me hard, especially when I realized that I didn’t have a recent photo of us together. After all, I’m a professional photographer and a Daddy’s girl!

BY ALLISON ORTHNE

R

Thankfully, my dad survived, and a few weeks later, I forced my entire family into my studio to capture an assortment of “legacy portraits.” The portrait of my dad and me was the first one I took (Figure 1).

Legacy portraits: good quality portraits that will one day be priceless, especially after loved ones pass away.

64 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

(Figure 2)

In Victorian England in the 1800s, it was a common practice to do “death portraits” of loved ones after they passed. Photos were rare and expensive, but they felt compelled to take a last photo to preserve the memory of the deceased. Although modern day technology has changed things, many of us still do not have good quality portraits of everyone we love, including ourselves.

Because I don’t want you to miss out on the opportunity of taking these priceless portraits, I encourage you to use this checklist for your own collection of legacy portraits.

Some day you will be looking for pictures of your loved ones, and one day they will be looking for pictures of you.

Trust me when I say someday these portraits will be priceless.

Checklist for Legacy Portraits: While death is a topic we prefer to avoid, perhaps if we actually sit with the reality a bit and allow all the feelings, we will have a better appreciation for the gift of life, the relationships and people we treasure, and perspective on what is truly important. Portraits and photos of our loved ones help cement this. I thoroughly enjoy all I have captured of my loved ones over the years (Figure 2).

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter Spring Organization Reboot – Plan on It! Spring is here, and that means it’s time for spring cleaning and organization. If your New Year’s resolutions have come and gone, this is the perfect time for a reboot! While the top resolutions we make are often around health, fitness, and family, it’s difficult to accomplish any of those goals without some planning and organization. Over the last couple of years, planners have crept into the craft world, and I’ve found myself drawn to the joys of the analog task of writing down things and checking them off. That joy is enhanced by crafting in my planner as I make my to-do list. As a crafter who loves to organize, I thought this was the best time to share my crafty tips for planning and organizing.

74 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

1– Pick a planner If you haven’t purchased a new planner, now is the time! I prefer a disk planner for two reasons: • It’s soooo easy to move pages, lists, dashboards etc. around when you’re using disk. • I like being able to fold the cover back and still have the planner flat on my desktop. Spiral bound planners and ring planners are also very popular, so choose the type, size, and shape that fits your life, and start crafting your plan to be organized!

2– Get a punch that works with your planner Buy a hole punch that works with your planner binding and also is as portable as you need it to be. I have the Create 365 Punch, but I also have the WeR Memory Keepers Planner Punchboard. The Create365 punch works great, but it’s big and heavy to travel with. The WeR Planner Punchboard is quite a bit lighter if you’re planning to carry it around with you. It also offers more versatility, so if you’re using a variety of planners/journals, you’ll get more use out of the WeR punch.

By Tiffany Spaulding

THE ORGANIZED CRAFTER

3– Get CRAFTY with your planner! T

Trim the edges off printed papers to create fabulous borders for your planner pages. You’ve got tons of paper crafting supplies and scraps of paper, so create your own planner embellishments and use up your stuff! I want my planner to be as pretty to look at as it is efficient to use! If you buy a store-bought planner, it’s often difficult to find accessories that match, so use your stickers, paper, punches, markers, and adhesives to create a planner that matches your style and personality. If you don’t have a Xyron sticker maker, I would recommend one. Regardless of the type of planner you’ve chosen, you’ll be able to use your Xyron to create stickers and sticky notes that are a perfect fit on your planner pages. I also recommend the Xyron adhesive eraser: it helps to remove any little bits of adhesive around the edges of your stickers.

Finish your pages by adding colour blocks to some or all of the sections.

This butterfly paper was a full sheet of a repeating design. I trimmed the edge of it for a border and cut smaller embellishments from the pattern to use as accents on the page. Self-adhesive vellum can be used to create a writing space over darkcoloured paper embellishments.

When you’re done designing your planner pages, cut extra rectangles, squares, and decorative elements, and run them through your Xyron. Put them all together in a pocket in your planner. They’ll be ready when you want to add, change, or embellish something.

I prefer to use paper rather than cardstock when I’m working on a planner, but I regularly use both. The thickness of cardstock adds more of a “bump” to the page when you’re trying to write. I’m especially fond of using printed paper that has a design around the edge.

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020 75

4– Make it your journal the year’s events, you’ll be able to use your planner as a reference.

As scrapbookers, a yearly planner can serve as a scrapbooking journal too! Use your planner to keep track of your daily life, but add in extra pages filled with journaling notes. At the end of the year, save your journal with your photos. When you’re ready to scrap

Are there family videos posted on your YouTube channel? Or someone else’s? Consider creating a QR code that links to the video and adding that to your planner/journal; you’ll be able to scan the link with the camera on your phone or your tablet and rewatch the video whenever you want.

When you scrap that event, you can add the second sticker to your scrapbook page. Anyone who wants to view the video can scan and watch.

Print out a couple of copies of the QR code and run them through your Xyron. “Stick” one down to the planner page, and save the other in a little pocket in your planner/journal.

5– Dashboards will help keep you focused on your goals

Don’t freak out over the word goal; goals can be gigantic and overwhelming or they can be small and easily achievable. You should have both types of goals in your life. Habit trackers, goal trackers, errand lists, weekly menus, and to-do lists are just a few of the things that can be managed off a dashboard insert in your planner.

I like to use tracing templates to create interesting edges and layers on my dashboards. I leave the dashboards blank and add large sticky notes/lists to them for each of items I am tracking. I have a big To Do list in my planner, I call it the Perpetual To Do List (PTD). This is a list of all the things that pop into my head that I don’t want to forget.

I write them down on the PTD List until I have a chance to prioritize them. Each morning I read through the PTD List and cross off anything that’s been done, then transfer things I’m going to get to this week on to the assigned day of my planner. It’s at this point that I’ll move something onto one of the dashboards.

Here are three things I plan each week that truly simplify my life 1 Wardrobe– Getting dressed in the morning can really slow me down. On Sunday when I’m planning my week, I haul my planner into the closet and use it as I physically plan my wardrobe. The information about weather, meetings, videos, etc., is key to choosing the right wardrobe for each day. I use hangers that are marked with each day of the week. I include everything from handbags and 76 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

hosiery to jewelry and jackets. 2 Dinner– Meal planning can be a little painful and requires a bit more work than the others, but I’m always so happy when I get home from work and I don’t have to make any more decisions; I just execute the plan I made on Sunday. 3 Errands– I DEPLORE running errands– putting gas in my car, picking up dry cleaning, going to the bank or pharmacy, dropping things off at the Goodwill…whatever little tasks need to get done – YUCK! I’ve found that

putting the worst things at the front of the week makes the rest of the week better. If you have things you don’t like to do, try squeezing them into Monday or Tuesday. I also load everything into my car on Sunday night, so I don’t have any excuses for not getting things done on the way home. Personal Joy Note– When my husband is in town, if he drives my car, he always stops by the gas station and fills up the tank. I LOVE THIS!!!! I’m not sure what it is about getting gas, but it’s the errand I detest. Thanks Park; this is just one of the many reasons I love you.

HEADER SEALED WITH GRANDPARENTS HERE A KISS

by Kelly Klapstein

A Sweet Spring Alphabet Beautiful lettering can be composed of simple lines. It doesn’t have to be ornate or elaborate. Sometimes, the prettiest letters are the easiest to draw. In my lettering workshops, we learn how starting with a simple, classic alphabet with clean lines can be modified easily and transformed into creative letters and words. Pick up a pencil and paper, and let’s transform a simple alphabet into something special.

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

78 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

HAND LETTERING 1

2

3

4

1. Start by drawing a classic alphabet on grid or lined paper with a pencil. I always like using grid paper with squares because it is helpful to have guidelines for consistency and structure. Remember to use your eraser to fix anything you don’t like about your letter. Now let’s add a little more curl to the end points of the lines in the letters. This will transform the alphabet into a whimsical style. For a seasonal theme, we can add simple flowers to the lines to create a style that is perfect for spring. You could take this style one step further and change all the lines to flowers and leaves.

TIP: Keep a separate journal or notebook for collecting different hand lettering styles, and draw each alphabet from A to Z.

Once you have practiced drawing an alphabet from A to Z, it’s time to draw some words. Hand lettering any word is a 3-step process:

2. Practice drawing the word with pencil on grid paper until you have a ‘final draft.’

3. Draw guidelines and words lightly

4. Trace over with pens, and erase the pencil lines when ink is dry. (Optional: add colour.) When it comes to hand lettering, overthinking is usually a bad idea. If you’re anything like me, I tend to think more than I do and end up planning and imagining a perfect project that is almost impossible to create. Thinking too much can take away the joy of making, and we will never feel satisfied that what we made is ‘good enough.’ So keep it simple, pick up a pen and paper, and draw some pretty letters!

with pencil on blank paper, or use a light pad.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

COLOURING WITH FINNABAIR MICA POWDERS

1.

Use your Eileen Hull Wrap Journal die and Sizzix Mat Board to create the journal base. Collect your Wild Whisper NWD stamps and Prima Marketing Finnabair Mica Powders.

2.

Stamp your floral image, using Ranger Archival jet black ink. You can free-hand stamp like I do or use an acrylic block or stamping platform.

3.

Repeat Step 2 throughout the journal using different stamps from the set. Do not reload the ink every time you stamp. Try stamping 3 to 4 times randomly to create a lighter version of the stamped image. This will naturally create layers for you.

4.

Sprinkle your Mica Powders onto a craft mat and spray some water either on the powders or right beside. Use a paintbrush to apply the wet Mica Powder to the stamped image. The Mica Powders offer a beautiful shimmer to any project. Once the Mica Powder has been applied, seal it with a light spray of hairspray.

STAINED GLASS TECHNIQUE For this stained glass technique idea, we have to thank my Granny. I remember that when I was a little girl she had a picture of a flower (I believe it was a rose) on the wall. It was so shiny, pretty, and sparkly. Of course, being a very inquisitive girl who loved to colour, I put my little nose right up to it, peered in, and realized that all the sparkle was coming from crinkled up tinfoil.

Much later when I entered the world of rubber stamping, I realized that I could duplicate this idea. Of course, this technique has evolved over the years. This is my latest rendition of the technique that I have shared over the years. I used my idea in a very spring-like way, even though when I created it it was full-on Christmas. So, feel free to use this technique with different dies and stamps, adding that

lovely stained-glass embellishment to your favourite project, be it a tag, a card, or a scrapbook page. I have also created some amazing projects using stamps instead of dies to create a stained glass piece. Stay tuned to Creative Scrapbooker Magazine, and we will share those ideas in a Technique Taster or an article soon! Thank you, Granny, for having that picture on your wall that now will inspire us all.

CREATE THE STAINED GLASS EFFECT

1. Cut out the Impression Obsession die from

Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock. Colour in the die, using pigment ink

4. Colour the backside of the clear plastic,

using Sharpie markers. If desired, blend colours on the front as well.

2. Emboss the die cut with clear embossing

powder. Repeat 2 to 3 times.

5. Crumple up a piece of tinfoil. Flatten the

3. Place a strip of double-sided Sookwang

tape on a non-stick surface. Remove the backing. Roll the tape into a long thin log. Adhere the tape log to the back of the die cut. Manipulating the tape along the thin lines. Then adhere the die cut to a piece of clear plastic. Trim off excess.

6. Trim the tinfoil.

tinfoil, using a rolling pin. Cover the entire back of the die cut with double-sided Sookwang tape, and adhere to the flattened tinfoil piece. Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020 99

WITH JAYME LOGE

Planners Gonna PlanHabit Tracking and Inspiration

This Is My Life

Jayme Loge Spruce Grove, Alberta SUPPLIES: Elizabeth Craft Designs planner book and die, Echo Park Paper Co. patterned paper, Momenta die, Stampendous stamps, Ranger Archival ink, American Crafts Kelly Creates pens and sticker quote, unknown watercolor paints.

Have you been feeling a little stuck in your life, wanting something different but not knowing where to start or how to find the time? Do you need to make changes for your health and well-being? Tracking your current habits and perhaps establishing new ones can get you on your way; small changes in your life really can lead to large shifts in how you use your time and how you feel.

102 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

Getting started is simple because you do not need anything beyond a blank bullet journal and a great pen, but of course you are welcome to add anything that makes your heart happy. There are even ready-to-go journals on the market, and you may be fortunate enough to find one that meets your needs. Simply start off with a monthly grid and determine which habits you want to track on a daily basis. Consider the things you want to do more often and the things

you want less of in your life that will bring you closer to your goals. Keep in mind that you are not committed to tracking these things forever. You can always modify your goals as your habits and needs change.

Hike Traveler’s Notebook

Karla Yungwirth, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Wild Whisper patterned paper, card pack, stamps and Traveler’s Notebook, Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink, VersaMark ink, Emerald Creek Craft Supplies embossing powder, SpiegleMom Scraps sequins, Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stencil, Southern Ridge Trading Co. wood veneer, unknown washi tape.

Scraps of Info “I used the Project Life App to save my photos as four 2” x 3” pictures in a 4” x 6” template, making them a perfect size for this Traveler’s Notebook.” ~ Karla Yungwirth

The open format of a bullet journal gives you a lot of flexibility. You can fill your page with only grids or bullet journals for tracking habits, but you also can leave space to create art or record quotes that inspire you. Your trackers can be elaborate or simple. They can exist in their own little journal, or they can be on a page that is included in your daily planner book.

Once you have your materials at the ready, the next thing you need to do is decide which things you want to keep track of. Do you want to track how often you engage in a certain

activity or how much time you spend on it? The choice is yours. Although the following list is limited and incomplete, it may give you some ideas on where to start: ● Personal Goals: engage in art, reading, or exploring music; learn a new skill; watch TV or tablet; phone a friend or family member ● Work Goals: respond to emails; complete tasks; collaborate with colleagues ● Financial Goals: shop; put money in savings; pay bills ● Health: exercise; eat junk food; meditate; experience symptoms of ill health

● Household Tasks: do weekly and daily tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, watering the garden, or pet care; or monthly and yearly tasks such as changing the furnace filter and cleaning the baseboards. (Never again wonder whether it was done last week or not!) When you have tracked the activities /habits you want to change, you can make informed choices about how you might make adjustments to increase your satisfaction with your life and where it is headed. Note these goals in your planner also.

Downtown Spokane Traveler’s Journal

Lindsy Cummings, Vauxhall, Alberta SUPPLIES: Studio Calico Traveler’s notebook, tag, and roller date stamp, Ranger Tim Holtz Distress ink, M&G journaling pen from Happie Scrappie, unknown background stamp, photos printed on an Instax printer, antique postcard.

Habit tracking takes very little time, but can provide meaningful transformations in life satisfaction and goal attainment. Consideration and time are needed to set up each month’s grid, but after that, all that is required is a few minutes at the end of the day to reflect on what you achieved and to give some thought to the next day’s goals. This sort of meditative reflection can have positive effects on mental health, mood, and attitude!

104 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2020

Scraps of Info “This page layout was part of my Easter Vacation Traveler’s Journal, where I traveled to Spokane, Washington, with my parents. Each night I would journal in the hotel. I even brought my Instax Printer with me, so I could print the photos directly from my phone on the go!” ~ Lindsy Cummings

Studies have shown that the act of writing something on paper has more impact on your behaviour than using digital formats. It takes slightly more effort to do and so underlines the importance of your goals. Thus it remains a central focus in your daily life. The beauty of tracking your habits is that it makes you more accountable to the things you want or don’t want in your life. Sitting down daily to reflect on how you are spending your time and whether or

not those choices will help you reach your goals can be transformative, plus it allows you to focus on the things you have done. When the day is busy and filled with surprises, be kind to yourself and notice what you have accomplished! Happy tracking!
