SWEEPSTAKES W OW ZE R S!!!

Gooooooood Morning 2021! (said in my best Robin Williams voice from the movie Good Morning Vietnam – it’s an oldie. If you haven’t seen it you definitely should…. I digress.) WHAT A YEAR! Never in a million years did I ever imagine living through a pandemic. So many changes, so many lessons, so many challenges and victories. I think it is safe to say we truly have no idea what 2021 holds; 2020 was a gentle reminder of that. We need to spend WAY more time enjoying the little things—the ride, the day-to-day, the freedom that we all took for granted. We decided to start 2021 off with a BIG BANG! In Creative Scrapbooker terms that means SWEEPSTAKES! That’s right! And RIGHT now we have TWO SUPER-HUGE sweepstakes going on!

Drum Roll Please…. 1. The first sweepstakes is Timeless Tools with Creative Memories! WIN a GINORMOUS selection of MUST HAVE tools for paper crafting from Creative Memories.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Impossibility of a Title

As scrapbookers we place significant value on the often-elusive title on our layouts. As we all know, a good title is few words, and BANG, it pulls you in. Some find choosing a title exciting, while others dread the experience. Either way, titles have a profound impact on our finished page. The challenge of 2020—a complex year to say the least—will be creating simple and powerful titles. That said, what I have seen from all of you has impressed me…powerful, one-word summaries.

Left to Right: Winter 2020/21 Fall 2020

Check out the titles on the COVID projects (page 30) in this issue, and on those we featured in our Fall 2020 and Winter 2020/21 issues. I expected words such as chaotic, loss, alone,

SOCIAL DISTANCING

exhausting, and ugh. You rose to meet the moment with humour, support, and kindness in your titles and stories. Your display of appreciation, friendships, and connections was powerful. You gave me a renewed sense of what is most important. For that, I am thankful! Let’s capture the resilience and inventiveness you discovered through this difficult time and pull it into our future. Let’s put words like hope and optimism, unity and support, kindness and calm at the tip of our tongues. Looking forward to hugging,

Katharina HEART & SOUL

WE LOVE TO HEAR FROM OUR READERS “I just thought I’d send kudos to Tiffany’s organizational system that she has written about in several issues. After making 41 Xmas cards, my craft/sewing room looked like a bomb had gone off in it. Over time, I’ve accumulated more and more supplies (I’m sure you’ve heard this before) and my old system of organizing wasn’t cutting it anymore. So rather than jam it all back into the cupboard, I decided to use Tiffany’s system of organizing by colours and themes, and it’s working beautifully for the birthday cards and Valentine cards I’m working on now. Thank you Tiffany.” ~ Frances Purslow

2ND CHANCE TRAIL RIDE Cathy Ockerman, Elk Point, Alberta “2nd Chance Trail Ride Society was founded by Morris and Fae Irvine in 2011, after Morris received his doublelung transplant in 2010. The experience made Morris realize that there was a lack of awareness for Organ Donation and a lack of support for those going through the transplant process. 2021 will mark the society’s 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY! We, with the support of our riders, donors, and sponsors, have subsidized THREE apartments, provided mentorship, and continue to promote organ and tissue donation awareness.” ~ Cathy Ockerman

Thank you so much Cathy Ockerman for sharing this lifechanging Society with all our readers. You and your team have so much to be proud of. For more information on the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society, its events, and how to become a donor, please visit 2ndctr.com for more information.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER A year has come and gone since we first heard the term “Covid-19.” We are all part of a historical human event, and future generations will know us as the survivors of a terrible time. What they won’t fully understand is the human and financial costs of delayed, dismissed, and suspended celebrations and restrictions in daily life that compounded the tragedy of loss and illness. We are so grateful scrapbookers have documented the everyday and extraordinary ways our lives changed during the pandemic. It certainly has been a year for the scrapbooks!

Rice Paper

Although I’ve been a fan of using napkins in my art, my world expanded upon the discovery of beautiful rice papers, and I couldn’t wait to try them out on everything, including inside my Bible! They are beautifully thin, yet surprisingly sturdy, so super easy to use and very forgiving when creating! We used three different methods to adhere the rice paper into our Bibles, and all have their place!

by Allison Orthner

BIBLE ART JOURNALING

Rice papers from www.Ninnysnapkins.com

I BELIEVE. HELP MY UNBELIEF Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Stamperia rice paper, unknown glue stick.

You may be as surprised as I was that rice paper for crafting contains NO RICE! Because the paper originated from China in the late 19th century and rice was China’s main cereal grain, Europeans wrongly assumed it was made from rice. Eventually it became so well known as rice paper, the name stuck and remains to this day even though it is actually made from the stems and branches of Tetrapanax Papyrifer and Mulberry bushes!

Scraps of Info I used a glue stick and applied it directly to the back of an entire piece of rice paper then adhered it inside my interleaved Bible.

Glue can be a lot more than just a way to adhere two pieces of paper together. For this article, I experimented with using glue–especially hot glue–to create a variety of effects and embellishments. All you need is an inexpensive glue gun, some glue sticks, and a nonstick craft mat. Sometimes you can find coloured or sparkle glue sticks in dollar and craft stores, but clear glue works just as well for all of these techniques because it can be coloured after the fact with a variety of media, such as paint, waxes, alcohol ink markers, or even nail polish. Here are some ideas for using hot glue for cardmaking and scrapbooking: • Stamp into a puddle of hot glue with an inked stamp, let it cool, and then peel the stamp back out of the glue to form a ‘wax’ seal or dimensional embellishment. I recommend inking the stamp beforehand with an embossing ink such as Versamark to get the stamp to release easily out of the cooled glue without adding colour.

• Squirt hot glue into shaped moulds to create detailed dimensional embellishments. Prima makes some beautiful moulds, and you can often find others that are originally meant for moulding clay or candy. • Hot glue makes excellent dimensional dots. Just pipe a small amount of hot glue onto a craft sheet to form small drops, let cool, and then add colour if desired. • Create glue designs to use as page titles, embellishments, and even as stencils. Simply squirt glue onto the craft sheet in various shapes, let cool, and colour as desired. You can freehand these designs, or trace a pattern placed under the craft sheet. The cooled glue can be easily trimmed with scissors. • Pipe some hot glue onto cardstock or heavy paper, spread slightly with a toothpick if desired and sprinkle with embossing powder. Gently heat to melt the powder. There are all kinds of ways to play with glue, and I hope that some of these ideas spark your creativity. Have fun with your glue!

Peek-A-Boo Card Kerry Engel, Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Brother ScanNCut electronic cutting machine, Art Impressions stamps, Ranger Archival ink and Glossy Accents, Chameleon Color Tone pens, Glue Dots Adhesives.

Scraps of Info Here is a look inside Kerry’s card. Now that you have scanned the stamped image into your Brother ScanNCut, you have it there forever! You can cut it out, draw it, and change the size! AWESOME!

70 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

BASIC SCANNING AND CUTTING WITH THE BROTHER SCANNCUT

1. Use Ranger Archival ink to stamp the Art Impressions stamp on a

piece of white cardstock. Be sure to stamp a dark black image.

3. Colour the doors with your favourite pens.

2. Using your Brother ScanNCut, scan the image and then cut it out.

Use the negative cut out to create your slim line cardbase.

4. Embellish the doors with Ranger Glossy Accents.

Scraps of Info Kerry used the Brother ScanNCut to give her card the Peek-A-Boo effect!

Live Life in Full Bloom Nicole Wright, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Ranger Archival ink, heat gun, Dina Wakley Media Clear Gesso and Scribble Sticks, Wild Whisper NWD stamps, recycled book pages, unknown paint brush watercolour brush, stamping platform.

Scraps of Info Nicole designed her art journal page using the Wild Whisper NWD Fanciful Bloom stamp set and coloured it using Ranger Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks.

72 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021

DESIGNING BOOK PAGE EMBELLISHMENTS

1. Apply a coat of Ranger Clear Gesso on your book page. This creates

a foundation without losing your book page look. You can use a heat gun to dry the clear gesso or wait for it to air dry.

3. Lay your book page down in a stamping platform and secure it with

the magnets. Position the stamps on the page where you want them. Then close the lid so the stamps stick and are perfectly positioned.

5. Ranger Scribble Sticks are packed with bold colours. Scribble the

leaves, stems, vines, and florals. You can even scribble colour over the sentiment. You can blend colours together to create more depth.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

2. Once the gesso has dried, it will curl the page. Simply flip the page over

and apply heat. Move the heat gun around the page so you don’t scorch the paper. This will reduce the curl.

4. Load stamps with Ranger Archival ink, and stamp the image. The ink will

not bleed when you apply water. Repeat this step until your image is full and clear.

6. This step is the most fun. When you apply water with your watercolour

pen, all the colours pop. Blend the colours together; wipe each colour off before blending to the next. This ensures that you won’t muddy the colours.

USING BASIC TOOLS TO CREATE AN ARTISTIC LAYOUT

1. Choose a paper that has a large overall repeating pattern. If it’s

double-sided, you’ll be able to use the opposite side for photo mats etc. If it’s single-sided, you’ll need another piece of complementary paper. You’ll also need white cardstock for the base, and pens in colours that coordinate with the main patterned paper.

3. Pick up a good amount of the watery paint with a craft paintbrush or

toothbrush. Tap the brush over the cardstock base with your forefinger to distribute splatters of ink. You can also run your finger over the bristles to create a finer mist of paint. Set cardstock base aside to dry.

5. Cut a 1″ × 12″ strip and two 4″ × 4″ photo mats from the remaining

paper or from another piece of coordinating paper. Then use MicroTip Scissors to fussy-cut as many shapes as possible from any remaining patterned paper.

2. Using the bold ends of your pens, apply ink to a craft mat and then

spritz the ink with water to form puddles of photo-safe paint.

4. Determine the pattern on your paper that you want to cut out, and use

the Micro-Tip Scissors to cut around it all across the paper. Leave one edge of the paper straight to be placed along the top edge of the layout.

6. Adhere the fussy-cut strip across the top edge of the paint-splattered

base page, overlapping the matted photos. Adhere the 1″ × 12″ strip along the bottom of the base page and add a border sticker above it. Arrange the fussy-cut shapes and stickers below the photos, overlapping and layering them with Foam Squares Adhesive to give dimension and interest.

Storytelling Photo Fun –through Part 1 Photos By Allison Orthner

I LOVE A GOOD STORY. Comedy, romance, suspense, intrigue. I love it all!

As humans, we are drawn to stories. It is why we watch TV, read novels, and go to the movies. It is also the foundation of why we scrapbook—to tell our stories. With photography, every photo captures a moment, but not all photos tell a story.

Why are some photos just a picture, while others draw you into a story? I’ve been analyzing this recently while following a few “photog-crushes” of mine (JeremyCowart.com and BenjaminCole.com), who are master storytellers through their images. This type of photo not only requires skills in composition, lighting, etc., but storytelling images also seem to contain a few other common traits:

EMOTION. We are drawn to emotion, especially extremes: happy is nice, but ecstatic is magnetic; sad is moving, but despondent is compelling. In Figure 1, we are immediately drawn to the deep emotion on the face of the man dancing with the bride. It tugs on our heart, and once we know the real story, it intensifies even more.

(Figure 1) As I write this, our world is still battling Covid and it looks like there may be many months ahead of staying safe, so I’ve been brainstorming ways we can amuse ourselves with photography! I think having fun with photos is a great idea for ANY time, but these are also activities that can work with restrictions still in place, be adapted to different ages and assorted locations, and of course still be great entertainment once our lives get back to normal!! So grab your cameras or cell phones and try some of these fun photo challenges with your family and cohorts! (Figure 1) 1. Where’s Waldo This challenge is patterned after the famous children’s books where you have to find Waldo within a very busy picture, but I also look for opportunities to blend into the background (Figure 1) or have someone so small in an image, you hardly notice them!

BY ALLISON ORTHNE

R

2. Guess What It Is This activity involves capturing a portion of something in such a way that makes it challenging to discern what the object is, and people try to guess! My friend Polly Krause is brilliant at capturing beauty in unusual objects like dumpsters (Figure 2), and I loved the orange colour of water streaming over a rock. 3. Create a Meme This challenge is especially fun for older children or adults who are likely more familiar with memes (an interesting or funny captioned photo or video). The goal is to either capture a new image or find an old image and create a meme from it to share. (Figure 3)

78 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

(Figure 2)

Other challenges you can try are: • Recreating childhood photos (see CSM Fall 2019 for examples) • Floor Art (creating a scene on the floor shooting straight down) • Most creative use of props (costumes, balloons, magnifying glass, etc.) • Create an interesting shadow image • Recreate a scene in a movie or title of a song

I suggest having a prize for the best capture from any challenge as extra incentive. However, the real beauty of doing some fun photo activities is that both the experience and the results are a source of great entertainment that can create memories for years to come. In the next issue, I will cover even more fun photo ideas that you can do with family, friends, and cohorts as we venture into the warmer days of summer!

A Sweet Springtime Illustration

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

1

I have no formal art training and wish I did, especially when it comes to drawing. When I began lettering, I also started to draw simple illustrations, mostly for my journal. I realized that I can draw basic shapes and lines that actually look like a variety of plants and leaves. 86 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021

HAND LETTERING

2

3

1. Previous page I often look at natural objects and figure out easy ways that I can draw them. If you learn how to draw simple flowers and plants, you can draw them in your art journals, planners, and on cards too. Pick up a pencil and piece of paper and try drawing some pussy willow branches.

2. There are three separate parts of a pussy willow branch to draw: 1/ Draw a couple of wiggly lines as a branch. You can add a Y-shape to this branch or leave it as a straight stick. 2/ Draw the V-shaped bases of the fluffy bits along both sides of the branch. 3/ Draw the fluffy bits as short lines that form an oval shape.

3. Use your lettering or a stamp, add a splash of watercolour, draw your pussy willows with black ink, and you will have a cute card! You don’t need a degree in fine arts to create some pretty illustrations for your projects. Give it a try!

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter

By Tiffany Spaulding

Spring - time to refresh, renew, rethink, reorganize Just before I begin a new article for CSM, I put a post on Facebook and ask readers what they would like to learn more about. When I posted requests for ideas for this article, there was an overwhelming response for more information about my new personal crafting space and how the

changes in my life personally had affected the design of that space. 2020 was a crazy year for all of us. My world was changed completely by a number of things: • COVID • Our youngest child graduated from college • I partnered with Sara Davies & Crafter’s Companion and moved Totally-Tiffany business operations to the UK

• We sold our home in Washington state and moved to a new home in Arizona, where we built a small outbuilding that houses my office/ studio/craft room/design space. (It’s been christened The Crafty Casita). We all love a before-and-after story, so as a complement to his article, Creative Scrapbooker Magazine has added a page to their website – (see QR code below) On this page you’ll find photos, videos and more details about the transition of my studio space.

Starting with an empty patch of dirt gave me an opportunity to design a space that was very specific to my needs. I found it really helpful to create a room layout on the computer when I was designing my space. If you are thinking of doing the same, try using an app like RoomSketcher.

Creating Zones I decided to first create “zones” for each of the areas I needed to work in. In my case, it was storage, office, craft room, studio, and product design zone. However, your zones might be stamping, Cricut/Gemini/die cutting, sewing, and painting. Or if you share a space with family, your zones might simply be your space, their space, shared space.

104 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021

THE ORGANIZED CRAFTER

When I planned the zones, my goal was to keep things together that I use together. Initially, I set up zones in this order: office, craft room, product design space, studio – with the storage zone overlapping office and craft room After working on a couple of projects, I realized that it would be more efficient to switch the craft room and the product design space; I often need things in the studio when I’m crafting, but I rarely need craft supplies when I have my product designer hat on. Which

areas are you most likely to overlap? Stamping and die cutting? Vinyl and cutting machines? Think about this as you work through your plan. With everything on wheels, rearranging the space was fast and easy. Wheels are the #1 recommendation I make when helping crafters design their space. If you’re considering cabinets, those can be put on wheels/casters as

well. If you put the cabinets on casters and your design does not work out quite like you thought it would, you can rearrange your space easily. Or, if you move, you can take your craft room with you. When I am working, I like to surround myself with whatever I need. Carts and workspace on wheels make it simple to create a U-shaped area with everything I need.

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021 105

THE ORGANIZED CRAFTER

with the way your space looks, but you don’t have time to really organize, so you just cram as much as you can into the cupboard and close the door. The shelving in my studio is a great example of how efficient you can be in a small space when you don’t have to worry about opening doors or drawers. The studio is just 9′ × 5′ (less than 50 sq.ft.), and that includes a 30″ × 80″ worktable. Everything I need is in arm’s reach. You’ll notice my office space is a permanent “U.” My crafting space becomes a “U” when I roll the table, cutting cart, ScrapRack shelf, and paper cart all into place. My product development space becomes a “U” when I roll the PIP (Products In Process) totes up along one side and roll the crafting table up along the other.

Open Shelving Over Cupboards If your goal is to design a space where you want beauty over function, cupboards can help meet that goal. However, if you want to maximize the accessibility and use of your crafting supplies, open shelving is a must! Open shelving makes it easier to grab what you need/want. It also helps to prevent what I call the “cram and close.” This is when you get frustrated

106 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2021

Open shelving also gives you a better look at what you own. Out of sight, out of mind, is easily remedied with open shelving. You’ll use more of what you have when you can see your supplies. Take a look at the pictures in this article and you’ll see many examples of my love for open and accessible storage. One last consideration: no workspace is complete without a space for your pet. Happy Crafting, T.

Scraps of Info That beautiful Heartbeat die is from Impression Obsession.

CATHIE’S CHOICE

The engagement of my son, Tanner, and his beautiful lady, Katelin, was my inspiration for my Cathie’s Choice for this, the Spring issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. I truly am jumping up and down, happy about the upcoming wedding for these two amazing people that met, fell in love, and want to let the whole world know by getting married. In this ever-changing world, this amazing announcement is music to my ears, and their amazing engagement photos simply needed to be played with. Their beautiful photos inspired my die cuts and my ink to create a fun new technique using pigment re-inkers, a spritz of water, and a clear acetate sheet. I found a way to “control smear” a background. A controlled smear, you ask? Yes, and I will be demonstrating this fun, easy technique in an upcoming Technique Taster. Using my Impression Obsession dies, I created custom embellishments for both the scrapbook page (which will definitely go into a shadow box to be displayed and enjoyed each and every day) and the card. The card of course is their “engagement card,” and it was created using the same techniques that I used to create the page; I just cut the paper smaller. I sometimes tell people that a scrapbook page is a card for me …. I just do not fold the “panel” I am working on, lol! Everything you see started out as white Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock. My beloved 130 lb. paper is good on both sides and takes all the altering I can throw at it, especially when I stick to pigment ink. I love that what I do on one side does not bleed through to the back side, making both sides of my page or card panel, usable. So my “Cathie’s Choice” for this issue is LOVE …. Tanner’s & Katelin’s love …. my LOVE for all things pigment, my Impression Obsession die cuts, and my Super Stock.

In the End Sometimes all you need is a little splash of colour! Play with it. Spill it. Paint it. Roll in it. Spread it. Embrace it as often as you can. In the end – life is about using the whole box of crayons!

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THE SUMMER ISSUE: • Pets! • Inspired by the Artesania of Mexico • Recycled plastic • And so much more!
