LETTER FROM THE EDITOR JACKIE LUDLAGE
There are so many things I love about the Internet. It is a VAST sea of information at our fingertips. So many times during the day, something odd comes up in a conversation and we wonder, “How the heck did they do that?” Or “What is that made of?” Within seconds we can google and find out. How seriously AWESOME is that? I have almost entirely forgotten about the days when I wondered about something and then had to look it up in that HUGE set of encyclopedias my parents bought from the door-to-door salesman when I was little. The Internet has brought the JOY of scrapbooking even more alive in the last decade. One of my MOST favourite things to do is watch videos about paper crafting, art journaling, mixed media, card making, (and the list goes on). I seriously cannot get enough. I love watching everyone. Every single person does something slightly different, and I take a little something away from each video. At Creative Scrapbooker Magazine we have put together a Video Library on our website. It’s an incredible collection of videos that are packed with techniques, tips, and products
Scan for a direct link to the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Video Library.

that we love. The Video Library is set up in a way that you can click on a technique you are interested in and then all the videos associated with that technique will show up! Or you can just watch them all. Like me! When you click to watch the video, all the products used will be displayed under the video, including product links. This makes it much easier for you to find the products that the designers were creating with. Yes, we thought of everything! The Internet is an amazing place, and although I have fond memories of poring over pages in our set of encyclopedias with family and friends, I am equally happy to see my children uncover life’s little mysteries on the Internet! Be sure to visit the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Video Library; I promise you will love it! CreativeScrapbooker.ca/Videos Happy surfing, my friends!
Jackie PS In the winter issue, my letter was all about QR Codes. I continue to be amazed by this technology. It’s so easy. Turn your smartphone to camera mode, hold it over the QR Code, and a link will appear. Click the link and it will take you directly to what you are looking for! Be sure to check out all the QR Codes in this issue: it’s like a little treasure hunt!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER KATHARINA DOYLE
Thankful
for Scrapbooking!

Thinking positively won’t make problems disappear. It can, however, make problems more manageable as we stay open to new and better solutions. Friends, humour, and gratitude are three ingredients that help us stay positive. Thankfully, scrapbooking is the perfect medium that lets us reflect upon and celebrate these three positive ingredients.
So, bring forth your images and stories. What can you convey that helps you reconnect to the positive? For whom (or what) are you thankful? If you reconnect to even a little of this, your projects have life and become relatable. Others will see and feel it. Your power is in the positive story; your techniques and craft will make it art on the page.
In your next layouts I encourage you to be reflective. Stop and consider:
Personally, the process of scrapbooking helps me reflect, appreciate, and remember details. Whether or not I always acknowledge it, I do rediscover the gratitude that keeps me moving forward in every project. Please join me for the next one.
Who matters? – Friends and family, of course.
Where’s the joy? – How is the humour and love shown?
What’s it worth? – A lot! This is where gratitude comes in! 12 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2022

Hangin’ with My Gnomies Gnomes have been part of folklore for hundreds of years. They were generally cast as underground dwelling creatures and eventually showed up in gardens as protectors and defenders of the earth, and the life it supports. Right now, these engaging little creatures are showing up everywhere, and we can’t get enough of them. Gnomes are also believed to be a symbol of good luck, and we are certainly lucky to be able to share this gnome-tastic gallery with you!

Craftroom Carts - General Storage, Storage by Craft, Storage by Tool 3 strategies for making the most of your craftroom cart(s)
Carts in your craftroom can be a huge asset, but they can also become a mobile mess.
Cart Choices My Three Favourites Dimensionally, all of these carts are very similar. • The Lexington (bright pink) is available in 16 colours, which is great for matching your craft room. • American Crafts’ Ala Cart (white cart) has lots of great optional accessories. • The TotoLot (teal) is the easiest to assemble and folds flat for storage.
Organize a Tool Trolley Perfect for the tools you use every time you craft. If you don’t have space on your desktop to keep all of these handy, a tool cart can be the perfect solution. Put the things you use most on the top. Divide things like punch boards vertically for easy access.

Organize Paper These carts were designed to hold 8.5″×11″ / A4 or 12″×12″ paper. However, using something like Paper Handlers or Fab Files will allow you to store larger sizes of paper on the top shelf. When organizing paper on the lower shelves, you’ll want to leave enough space so you can tilt and lift things out of each section. I included a few small basic paper tools on this cart—a small trimmer, scissors, a ruler, and a pop-up trash can.
Organize by Tool – Cricut, Button Press, Foil Quill… You’ll use these types of tools more often with more success when everything is together. Cricut Supplies – Vinyl & Foil Quill Cricut machines are almost mandatory in craft rooms today. With them come rolls and sheets of vinyl, specialty tools, power cords…and more.

Create a Colour Cart I used the Lexington Cart for this colourful project. Bonus: all of the Ala Cart accessories seem to fit perfectly on this cart as well. Using the Totally-Tiffany 6 Level Stadium Arranger gave me easy access to all of the small bottles and jars on the bottom two levels. The top section is perfect for paints. The American Crafts Ala Cart Large Hanging Bin was ideal for brushes and paint pens. The smaller bin is a perfect “water” cup.

Organize Your Cart(s) by Type of Craft – Stamping, Sewing… Whether stamping, die-cutting, painting, or whatever, my mantra is “Keep things together you use together.” Having a cart or two organized by craft is an easy way to find everything you need for a specific type of craft. STAMPING If you love stamps, you probably have acrylic blocks, spritzing bottles, as well as a variety of inks, re-inkers, and tools spread around your craft room. TOP TO BOTTOM & LEFT TO RIGHT Ala Cart by American Crafts Ink storage buddy bags – Totally-Tiffany Accessory apron and hooks – American Crafts Craft Room Basics – Pocket Cards Organizer – Scrapbook.com Craft Room Basics – Stadium Organizer – 4 Compartments
A few more ideas… Perfect for Planning – Are you a planner junkie? Use a single cart to store all of your planner supplies together. Dies & Stamps – Getting your unmounted stamps and dies organized on a cart can be the perfect storage solution. Empty Cart - Keep a cart empty in your craft room and load it up with all of the supplies you need for a particular project.

The popularity of craft beer in my part of the world has grown astronomically in the last few years, and many of the breweries design beautiful labels for their beer. Many labels are actually just large stickers that can be easily peeled off the aluminum beer cans. After peeling, place the label on a piece of plain white cardstock. You can then use this “patterned paper” for card backgrounds or fussy cut portions of the label design to use as embellishments. I also discovered a super-easy trick for removing labels from most wine bottles. Simply fill the bottles with VERY HOT water to just above the level of the label (a funnel helps to keep from spilling water on the label), wait for a few
minutes for the heat to soften the glue and then slowly peel the labels off to use in wine journals or for scrapbooking projects. In addition to wine and beer labels, keep an eye out for other beverage product packaging that potentially could be repurposed. For example, my kids love flavoured sparkling water, and the cardboard cartons often have beautiful images of watermelon, oranges, and limes that could be fussy cut and used as embellishments. Possibilities are everywhere.

Modeling Paste I’m pretty hesitant to add anything too thick inside the pages of my Bible, but fellow artist Jenn Knibb recently informed me that using modeling paste was one of her favourite products to use. I adore art with texture and dimension, so decided to try it inside my Bible and was utterly delighted with the results. The modeling paste goes on like butter, can be applied thick or thin, and is flexible once dry, making it a great addition to Bible art. by Allison Orthner
BIBLE ART JOURNALING MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: DecoArt Media Modeling Paste, Matte Medium and Liquid Glass, DecoArt Americana Sunflowers stencil, DecoArt Americana acrylic paints in Bright Yellow, Canyon Orange, Burnt Umber and Turquoise, DecoArt Extreme Sheen Metallic 24K Gold paint.
Scraps of Info Modeling paste is sometimes known as texture paste and can come clear and transparent or white and opaque. It is easily mixed with acrylic paints for added fun.
HOW TO USE MODELING PASTE
Step 1. Prep page with matte medium and let dry. Using a palette knife, apply a thin layer of modeling paste through your stencil. Gently lift off. Repeat where desired, and let dry well.
Step 2. Place some modeling paste on a palette, add a small dab of acrylic paint and blend. Create two or more colours, and then apply through your stencil shape. Gently lift off and let dry.
Step 3. Use acrylic paints to enhance the dimensional designs created with the modeling paste. Fill in the background, add highlights, and finish off with some journaling. Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2022 69

Home Noreen Smith, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: All supplies by Creative Memories.
TECHNIQUE TASTERS
USE THE 45º LINE ON THE 12″ TRIMMER FROM CREATIVE MEMORIES
1. Choose a double-sided paper that has good contrast between the patterns
on the two sides, and a coordinating patterned paper, solid cardstock, or album page for the base page. Use the 12″ trimmer to cut the doublesided patterned paper into one 9″ × 12″ piece and three 1″ × 12″ strips.
3. FLIP the paper over and repeat on the opposite side. Discard triangles
or save for another use.
5. Adhere the 12″ edge of the large rectangle to the top edge of the base
page with the angled edges pointing down. Place the two 1″ × 12″ strips over the seam with the angled cuts meeting in the centre to form a mitered corner. Adhere. Trim off the overhanging portions of the strips with trimmer.
2. Place one of the short sides of the 9″ × 12″ paper on the trimmer,
aligning the edge with the 45° line printed on the trimmer base plate and the bottom corner of the paper at the 4.5″ line. Make the cut.
4. Place one of the 1″ × 12″ strips on trimmer with the long edge on the 45°
line and the top corner at the cutting line. Cut to create an angled corner. Flip over a different 1″ × 12″ strip to show the pattern on the opposite side, and then repeat the steps to cut an angled corner on the second strip.
6. Adhere the third 1″ × 12″ strip along the bottom of the base page. Add
photos, embellishments, title, and journaling as shown or as desired.

CREATE A WATERCOLOUR BICYCLE
1. Stamp the Art Impressions bicycle, using Ranger Archival ink on a piece of
watercolour paper. Apply blue marker to acrylic palette. Add water with a paintbrush. With a very light hand and very little water, paint the bicycle, leaving areas with no colour.
3. Repeat the same process with a brown marker, painting the baskets
and seat. Use more or less water to create different shades. ALWAYS use a light hand.
5. Repeat this process with both the green foliage and yellow flower
stamps by Art Impressions. Use a green and a yellow marker to colour the stamps. Use a paintbrush and a small amount of water to create a watercolour effect in the same manner as in Step 4.
2. Repeat this process with a black marker, painting the tires and adding
shadows to the baskets and seat.
4. Using a dark orange and light orange marker, stamp different values of
the Art Impressions circle flower, stamp slightly over top of the baskets. Use a paintbrush to dab a small amount of water over the stamped images to create a watercolour effect.
6. Finally, stamp the flower and stem Art Impressions stamp using both a
green and a red marker. Again, apply a small amount of water to the stamped images with a paintbrush to create a watercolour effect.

There Is Never a Wrong Time for a
According to a Cosmopolitan Magazine article, polka dots first showed up in the 1700s with inventions that revolutionized the textile industry. However, dotted fabrics were initially associated with the plague, so they didn’t really show up in fashion in a big way until the 1920s. Dots became a pop culture mainstay, with a memorable song about yellow polka dot bikinis, and who doesn’t love Minnie Mouse’s iconic red polka dot dress? Now, dots are a staple in our spring wardrobes, and usually suggest a playful tone. This rings true also for our spotty, dotty gallery; enjoy these light-hearted cards and pages in our dots feature!

Journaling is the very heart of scrapbooking. Not only does it record important facts for future generations, such as who, what, when, and where, but it can also be cathartic to the storyteller who is sharing their intimate thoughts and feelings. Given its integral role in scrapbooking, why not add some creativity by twisting those words into interesting shapes that also help tell the story. For example, journaling about reading habits become the pages of a book or Christmas memories become part of the Christmas tree. What a delight to see stories come alive and take shape in your memory books! . 98 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 202298

I adore anything DIY and admit I started my photography business over 25 years ago (Figure 1) by “MacGyvering” a backdrop out of bedsheets tied to a broomstick with elastics and then suspended on an easel! The results were decent enough to launch a business, and although I now have a fully equipped professional studio with strobe lighting and backdrop system, I still love the challenge of a creating a makeshift studio anywhere I go.
The key to success is lighting. Boring, yes, but oh so vital to a great photo!! It is almost the only thing you need to worry about for a DIY studio-looking portrait. 102 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2022
LIFE THROUGH THE LENS
If shooting indoors, walk around and see where you can find large windows and beautiful natural light coming in. Avoid direct sunlight and instead seek soft, indirect sun. If you only have direct sun, you can try diffusing it with some sheer material, plastic, or even a thin shower curtain. Going outdoors is another great option for DIY studio portraits, especially in warmer weather. Here you also want to look for a shady spot away from direct sunlight, with a blank wall as the “backdrop” or a place to hang your own backdrop, if possible. While in Brazil at a youth home several years ago, I brought my camera, a portable reflector, and a few outfits from my studio, and offered portraits to several of the girls. Figure 2 show a behind-the-scene of the setting I chose against the stucco of one of the homes, along with a few of the results. I even shot photos of a newborn baby and little girl using a small piece of fake fur I brought with me (Figure 3) .
Figure 2
Once you have great light and a decent background or backdrop, simply set your camera settings and then focus your full attention on capturing some beautiful portraits and having fun!
NEXT ISSUE: Watch for some superfun DIY home décor projects you can make with your new favourite portraits and other photos you would love to display!

Spring Hand-Lettered Place Cards
Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.
I love spring and Easter! Bunnies, eggs, and chocolate, of course, are irresistible, and if I can add them to my hand-lettering projects, then I am very, very happy.

This year we will be celebrating Easter with my little niece Keli who is 3, so I wanted to make some super-cute place cards for our dinner table. Follow these simple steps to make your own.
4. Cut and fold place cards from white cardstock. Cut two bunny ears from the same white cardstock, and cut pink inner ears too. Adhere the ear parts together.
Now you can set the table for Easter or host a spring tea party!
1. Make an egg-shaped template and cut out as many eggs as needed from watercolour paper.
5. Cut two small slits (with a trimmer or craft knife) along the centre top fold of the place card, and slide the bunny ears into slits.
2. With a pencil, outline one letter in the centre of each egg. Using a black fineliner that is waterproof, draw “stitches” around each letter. Erase pencil lines when finished.
6. Use foam adhesive to adhere the egg letters to the front of the place card. Optional: Add a bow to one of the bunny ears.
3. Paint each egg with watercolour, avoiding the inside of the letters.

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2022 143
In the End Are you as excited for Spring as we are? Farmers are out in their fields seeding; greenhouses start opening their doors to share all their winter growth; university students finish up their winter programs and start bringing their youthful enthusiasm to summer jobs. The air is sizzling with new beginnings, fresh energy, and YES chocolate! The Easter Bunny fills our homes with smiles and anticipation. Take a moment, close your eyes, and breathe it all in. And of course, in the end, say yes to that piece of chocolate!
Scan here to see the page calls and submit your projects today.
