LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
“We stay apart, so when we get together there is no one missing.” Is this real? Is this happening? Today – the day I am writing this letter – the number of cases of people with COVID-19 in the world is unbelievable. And even more heart-wrenching is the number of loved ones lost. I have no words. I find myself battling my inner voice on an hourly basis. Worry. Fear. They find me. Will my children be okay? Will my parents stay healthy? Will the health care system manage? And oh the constant scratching as my brain ventures into our economy. Our jobs, our future, our safety. My anxiety takes my breath away. Breathe in. Breathe out. I try to fill my mind with gratitude. • I am so grateful for every single person who is out working during this pandemic. The janitors, the healthcare workers, the police, the grocery store workers, the construction companies, and ALL the helpers. YOU ARE THE HEROES. Thank you. • I am grateful for my husband Christoph. He is the only one in our home going out into the world where the virus waits. He is our rock. Thank you. • I am so incredibly grateful for technology. We can stay connected with my parents, my daughters, my family, and friends. We can see each other. We can talk.
Thank you.
COWS Jackie Ludlage, Elk Point, Alberta SUPPLIES: MultiCraft Forever in Time cardstock, Ali Edwards The Art of Noticing notebook, clips and die cuts, Kelly Creates Fineliner, Simple Stories alphabet stickers, Ranger Archival ink, Glue Dots Adhesives, unknown roller date stamp.
• I am grateful for all the artists in the world who go onto the Internet and share their art with us. The YouTubers, the Facebook lives, the IG stores. You distract me. And when my anxiety lessens, all that you have done will inspire me.
Thank you.
• I am grateful for this little tiny notebook by Ali Edwards. Every day, when my heart rate won’t slow down, I take a picture of something little that makes my heart smile. Then I add the moment to this little keepsake, along with whatever story needs to be told. Nothing fancy. It is all I want to do right now. It is perfect for me. Thank you.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Although we are all apart, it has never been more clear to me how connected we all are. You are all in my thoughts and in my prayers. Stay well. Stay safe.
Jackie

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
As I write this letter, we are in the thick of social distancing and self-isolation. Things have moved so fast I have no idea what daily life will be like as you’re reading this. There are two things I know for sure. First, each of us will all have a Coronavirus story we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. Second, we scrapbookers are some of the best-equipped people to stay busy during periods of isolation AND for carrying our unique stories into the future. So if you have not started already, join me in welcoming summer and finding ways to pay tribute to the time we’ve spent cooped up with family, supporting those who got sick, and watching a global and virtual community come together.
I challenge all of us to scrapbook these world-changing times. Let your future self and family know what you experienced and how it impacted your world…our world. What I love about scrapbooking is that it is both emotionally and intellectually engaging—two things we can share every day to help one another. We will hug hard again soon; for now, I am sending you a virtual one.

When in Doubt – grab a Stencil! The versatility of a stencil is astounding! You can use a stencil to add texture and colour with virtually any medium. Layer on inks, paints, and texture paste, and watch the results become a perfect custom background for your cards, tags, and scrapbook pages, or even your project’s main feature! Enjoy these diverse projects with one common feature— the wonderful stencil.
30 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020
DID YOU KNOW? The use of stencils dates back over 37 thousand years, as evident in Neanderthal cave art found in Spain. These paintings are outlines of hand prints; it is theorized that Prehistoric man or woman would place their hand against the wall, and then blow finely crushed pigment around it. These stencils were accompanied by shapes from the natural world and daily life: animals, hunting scenes, and ritual all figure prominently. Stenciling eventually spread to Europe, thanks to the trade routes from the East. The technique of stenciling became quite popular, and was used to add color to master prints. Stencils became handy in mass productions of items, including manuscripts, playing cards, book illustrations, fabrics, and wallpaper.1

BIBLE ART JOURNALING THINK ON THESE THINGS Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Ranger gesso, Jane Davenport stencil and acrylic paints, Stabilo pencils, Faber-Castell Gelatos, American Crafts gel crayons, Chameleon pencil crayons, assorted napkins.
Scraps of Info I practiced several faces in my art journal first, before drawing in my Bible. I used a variety of stencils and experimented with different mediums. Play with whimsical colours and features as well as more realism for variety.
BASIC STEP BY STEPS:
1. Gesso the page and let dry.
2. Paint the base skin tone.
Outline the face and features using a stencil and pencil or light colour.
Add slightly darker paint where shadows would be and lighter paint for highlights.
3. Use a variety of mediums to add hair, details on the eyes, and extra colours on the cheeks, lips, and background.

I love sequins. They are an inexpensive way to add an eye-catching touch to your scrapbook layouts and cards. Sequins come in many different sizes and colours. Although they are traditionally round, different shapes, such as stars and hearts, are also sometimes available. I often find sequins at the dollar and thrift stores, and for a few dollars I end up with enough sequins to last me for years.
Use sequins to decorate stamped images and die cuts, or glue them in a line, circle, or stenciled pattern. Sometimes just scattering a few sequins on a page background is all that you need. I find that a liquid glue such as Ranger’s Glossy Accents or Therm O Web’s iCraft Mixed Media Adhesive works best to adhere sequins. These glues grab the sequins quickly and hold them tight. Here are some sparkly ideas to get you started.

Which way to the beach?!?! Summer lands many of us at a beach where we get to play, relax, and capture photos of our loved ones.
BY ALLISON ORTHNE
R
Beach photos of people are tricky because the extremely bright sun creates harsh shadows, sun flares, and hazy shots. However, by following a few tips, you can still capture beautiful photos of your loved ones enjoying the beach.
66 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer Spring 2020 2020
LIFE THROUGH THE LENS 1. Avoid harsh sunlight on the face. If you can’t avoid the harsh sunlight, turn your subject’s back toward the sun. Not only will this remove harsh shadows from the face, but if exposed properly (more about that later), the backlight will make for a soft and airy look with beautiful rim lighting. Figure 1 2. Search for shade with scenic backgrounds. Be intentional, and search out shaded areas that still show the scenery, but eliminate harsh shadows. Figures 2 and 3 show the difference shade makes exposing faces. 3. Shoot at sunset or on cloudy days. Images captured at sunset provide beautiful golden glows. Figure 4 was backlit with the sunset providing a gorgeous sun flare through some beach huts, while Figure 5 is my niece facing the setting sun, resulting in a soft golden glow. If you happen to get a cloudy day at the beach, the entire area is perfect studio conditions, so even photos in the middle of the ocean turn out (Figure 6)! Just make sure your camera is waterproof! 4. Shoot in manual. Cameras will automatically meter the extra bright light of the sun and water reflections, which results in underexposing your subject. Shooting in manual will allow you to override the default settings and properly expose for the face. Consider these adjustments: • spot meter on the face • force your flash if subjects need more light (Figure 7) • overexpose slightly for brighter, cleaner skin tones The bright sun at the beach can make for some beautiful photo effects if done properly! Practice this summer and see if you can capture some beautiful resting beach faces of you and your loved ones!

Watercolour Lettering
Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.
Hand lettering isn’t all about pens. Your tools can be a range of mediums, such as chalk, colouring pencils, and paint. I have fallen in love with the beautiful art of watercolour lettering and thought I would share some helpful tips with you. .
My second book, “The Art of Watercolor Lettering,” is now available and will teach you everything you need to know to start painting pretty letters. You can also find my new Kelly Creates collection of watercolour lettering supplies to help you along the way—brushes, workbooks, palettes, paper pads, and watercolour inks, manufactured by American Crafts. 78 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020

I prefer sizes 1, 2, and 3, but you can use a bigger brush if you like. Another option is a fine-tip water brush. 2. Liquid watercolour ink is ideal for painting letters and takes the guesswork and labour out of mixing tubes of paint or using hard cakes or pans. Paint swatches of them for your reference.

Use two containers of water: one for clean water and the other for dirty water (cleaning your brush). I usually use glass jars. > Have paper towel or a rag handy to clean up spills or ‘erase’ mistakes. 5. Use regular lined or grid paper to practice painting letters, which will save the expense of buying watercolour paper while you’re learning.
lettering, so you can have the freedom of painting without being so technical, unlike brush script calligraphy. I still love script, but now I paint many more playful styles, mixing block letters with serifs, lowercase, and uppercase. Lettering is a creative expression of your artistic ideas, so don’t feel like you have to paint perfect letter forms. For me, it’s about relaxing and feeling calm while I watch the magical colours form letters on paper. Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020 79

CREATE A LANDSCAPE LAYOUT WITH A GEL PRINTING PLATE

blend of paint. Wipe off your brayer with a cloth or baby wipe. Then brayer the grass part of the gel plate, and blend into the sky. Get creative with your blending if you like creating hills. 3. Press a piece of 12” × 12” Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock on the gel plate, applying even pressure throughout. Then pull the paper off to reveal the background.
4. Die cut flowers using a Sizzix die and Wild Whisper NWD Media
Assemblage Mixed Media patterned paper. Loosely place the die cut flowers where you want them to be on the background. Using the same green paint you used for the grass, dip your brush and drag to create the stems.
5. Adhere the die cut flowers to the background, using Scrapbook
Adhesives by 3L 3D Foam Squares.
Scraps of Info I use my finger to smear the paint to get the paint moving before I use the brayer on the gel plate. This reduces any big blobs on the brayer.

By Cathie Allan
TAKING A BIRTHDAY CARD TO THE NEXT LEVEL I had a very hard time deciding on what to call this particular Cathie’s Choice article. Special, made-fromthe-heart birthday cards for the people that “create my life” is something I love to do. To make these cards extra special, I love to add photos. This card I am sharing with you is a card that I made for my newest, grand-handsome little boy, Max. Max, recently turned one year old—an extra-special birthday, right? I love that I could create a card that celebrated him in such a way that it would become a keepsake, and over the years he will have memories to last his life because I used pigment ink, which is highly fade-resistant!
Why do I know this? The answer to that is that I have an amazing 19-yearold, handsome grandson named Liam, who informed me that he has saved every card that I have made him since he was three! My heart jumped out of its creative box, of course. I cried, and I determined that I will do this for every birthday until I cannot do it anymore. I truly am a very happy stamper. You can start today. Celebrate your loved ones; create not just a card but a keepsake that they will have when you are not here anymore. It will make your creative heart so very happy, and theirs too! BIRTHDAY TAG Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Impression Obsession stamps and dies, Judi-Kins window plastic, Tsukineko pigment and StazOn ink, Nuvo Drops, Copic Markers, Sharpie Markers. 94 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020

THE
ORG AN IZED Crafter
Punches, Stamps, & Dies – how to organize your crafting tools using a catalogue. Whether you have hundreds of tools or just a few dozen, creating a catalogue is the easiest way to keep track of them.
Catalogues serve 2 major purposes: • Provide a visual reference to the tools you own. • Make it fast and easy for you to locate the exact tool you want to use. Let’s start first with setting up the catalogue itself. You can create your catalogue on any size of paper. I prefer 12” × 12” because there’s a lot of real estate on a 12” × 12” sheet. With that said, A4 or 8.5” × 11” is a little bit easier to manage when you travel. Create your catalogue using five major sections—Alphabets & Numbers, Themes/Sentiments, Holidays/Seasons, Shapes, Backgrounds/Borders. You may also want a Designers category if you collect particular designer(s).
96 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020
Alphabets & Numbers This category is self-explanatory, but it will also include punctuation marks. Occasionally you’ll have an alphabet set that also falls into a theme or holiday category. In that situation you’ll want to include the alphabet (or an example of it) in both sections.
Themes/Sentiments This section should be organized alphabetically. It will include things like Birthday, Bon Voyage, Camping, Congratulations, Family, Sports, Travel, etc.
By Tiffany Spaulding
Holidays/Seasons
Backgrounds/Borders
I prefer to arrange this section January to December, but you can use Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall if you prefer. This category will contain your seasonal and holiday tools arranged chronologically.
These are very generic tools—designs that could be used on any project. None of these would be theme-specific. A large number of embossing folders fall into this category.
Shapes
Designers
This section is for your Circles, Frames, Hearts, Squares, Stars, Tags; also organized alphabetically. You may have tools that fit in multiple sections. Hearts, for example, could be represented in two categories— Shapes/Hearts and Holidays/ Valentine’s Day.
You may want to catalogue designers you love/collect into their own categories as well as within the generic categories. As an example, you may have a catalogue section for all things Stephanie Barnard/ Stamps of Life, but you would also include her birthday dies/ stamps in the Birthday section of your catalogue.
I recommend that you catalogue ALL tools together using the categories listed above. There is a temptation to separate tools by type (dies, stamps, embossing folders, etc.) that will result in needing to create multiple catalogues. If you put all your tools together in one catalogue, you’ll have
just one catalogue to look through. This way, you may find that you’re inspired to use items you hadn’t even thought about using, just because you see them when you’re looking for something else. As an example, if you’re looking for a Christmas sentiment stamp, when you flip to the
Christmas section of the catalogue, you may find that you have the perfect holly border punch to complement your project. If the punches were separate from the stamps, you may never have thought to use the punch.
Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020 97
THE ORGANIZED CRAFTER
Creating examples for your catalogue For most tools, dies, punches, and stamps, you’ll want to cut/punch or create an impression of the actual tool. This is important because seeing the actual size will help you determine if it’s a good fit for your project.
For alphabet stamps that are individually mounted on wood blocks, you don’t need to stamp out the full set. Just an “ABC, abc, 123” will be enough to give you a good idea of the size and shape of the stamp set.
Add notations to the examples on the pages, reminding yourself where that tool can be found. Put your catalogue pages into a 3-ring notebook and start crafting!
98 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2020
For tools that come in standard sizes, such as embossing folders, creating a small representation and including a notation of the size in the catalogue will be sufficient. This method will also require less time to create and will occupy less space in your catalogue.

Introduction to Paper Making by Nancy Nickel
Are you a multi-crafter? Do you like to try every new craft you come across? I think many of us collect new crafts like we collect paper pads for our stash! Today, I want to introduce you to a great craft to add to your collection— paper making. As someone who has a very extensive craft collection, I have decided to ask myself three questions every time I’m introduced to something new: • What is the initial financial investment? • Will I need to purchase more supplies to continue, and are they available in my area? • Will I be able to use these supplies or the product of this craft, in other ways? When it comes to paper making, the answer to all three questions is very positive! My first introduction to handmade paper was as a young girl. I received a card that I really treasured. There was something special about it, and about the way it felt in my hands. It wasn’t until years later that I realized it was made out of handmade paper. I discovered this when I was in a specialty gift shop, and they were selling sheets of handmade paper for $20 a sheet! I was right to think that the card I received was special!

Several more years passed, and then I saw a gentleman by the name of Arnold Grummer on a TV craft show. He was demonstrating how to make your own handmade paper. I was fascinated! He made it all look so easy and so fun. And guess what? It really is! Arnold Grummer videos are available for you to watch at the Arnold Grummer website. It’s a fabulous source of instruction and inspiration.
You need only three things to make paper: pulp, water, and a handmold. PULP To make your pulp, you will need a blender. You don’t want to use your kitchen blender for this. I bought a used one for $5. They seem to be available everywhere. Pulp can be made from many different things. One of my favorite things is to recycle the junk mail that I receive. All of those flyers, advertisements, newsletters, and packing paper, can be turned into pulp. Even your bills can be used for pulp, although I do recommend paying the bill before you turn it into pretty, handmade paper. To make pulp, you simply tear up the paper you want to recycle, and throw it in a blender with some water. After blending it for 30 seconds you have pulp.
HANDMOLD A handmold is basically a screen with a frame around it, and an open support under it. The frame around the screen is called a deckle. The deckle can be shallow or taller. This will be determined by the method you use for making your paper. There are two methods for making paper: the dip method and the pour method. I will be focusing on the pour method in this article as it is my favourite way to make pulp. The pour method is done with a deeper deckle, or a thicker frame around the screen. In this method, you fill a tote or bin with water, and set the handmold into it. You then simply pour the pulp into the deckle. Try to spread the pulp as evenly as possible across the screen. Let the pulp dry completely. Then you carefully peel the paper off the screen. My papers were all made using the pour method, and Arnold Grummer’s Papermill Complete Papermaking Kit. This kit includes everything you need, plus a few extras to encourage your creativity. Another word used often in paper making is “inclusions.” Inclusions are anything extra that you add to the pulp. This can be flowers, leaves, mica dust, iridescent flakes, and much more. Do keep in mind that you don’t
HANDMADE PAPER want to add things that will tangle up in the blender blade. Use small items, and things that will blend easily. Alternatively, larger inclusions can be added to the deckle. They can remain on top of the pulp, or imbedded into the pulp.
Leaf Stamped Card Nancy Nickel, Langham, Saskatchewan SUPPLIES: Arnold Grummer's PAPERMILL Complete Papermaking Kit, Stampendous stamps, Stampin’ Up! ink, Celebrate It ribbon, unknown cardstock and blender.
Scraps of Info This paper was made with packing paper that came in an order of craft supplies. Handmade paper provides an excellent surface for stamping!
Here are some samples of inclusions: • Using Iridescent Flakes as an inclusion in mauve pulp. • Using a Skeleton Leaf as an imbedded inclusion in pulp made from orange cardstock from Club Scraps. The process of making the paper is fast – and so much fun! I usually choose an afternoon for the task, and set up a papermaking station in my kitchen. There is a wonderful sense of satisfaction when you hold a stack of beautiful papers that you’ve made yourself. To review my three questions regarding a new craft, the initial investment can be a little or a lot. I find the most cost-effective and convenient way of getting started is to use one of the Arnold Grummer Papermill Kits. They come in various sizes, or you can buy the parts individually. Once you have the necessary parts, you’re set to continue your paper making indefinitely. The only thing required to make more paper, is the pulp. Since we all get an endless supply of junk mail and other papers that need recycling, there will always be a source for pulp.
You Have Me in Stitches Nancy Nickel, Langham, Saskatchewan SUPPLIES: Arnold Grummer's PAPERMILL Complete Papermaking Kit, Stampendous dies, Stamin’ Up! and Close To My Heart stamps, Memento ink, DMC embroidery floss, unknown tissue paper, cardstock, piercing tool, mat, sewing needle and ribbon.
What’s better than having an endless supply of papers that you make yourself? These papers can then be used as creatively as any other paper. They can be inked, stamped, sprayed, die-cut, and coloured. This is definitely a craft that we should all add to our collection!
Scraps of Info This paper was made from recycled sewing pattern tissue. It was fun to add some stitching and a flower made from the pattern tissue.

HANDMADE PAPER
The Good Stuff Fan Deck Project Nancy Nickel, Langham, Saskatchewan SUPPLIES: Arnold Grummer's PAPERMILL Complete Papermaking Kit and Mini 52 Card Fan Deck, Spellbinders dies, Ranger Perfect Pearls Mist, Tim Holtz Idea-ology stickers, unknown pearl and liquid glue.
The Good Stuff Fan Deck Project: • Make paper from recycled packing paper, using the Arnold Grummer Papermill Kit. • Take the Arnold Grummer 52 Card Fan Deck, in the mini size, and remove the screw from the Deck. Set the inside papers and screw aside until later. • Measure the front and back covers. • Measure the handmade paper to fit the front and back cover.
Scraps of Info Handmade paper has a soft edge to it. To keep the soft edge, measure the paper and tear against the sharp edge of a metal ruler. • Die-cut some flowers and leaves, using the Spellbinders dies. • Using the Perfect Pearls Mists, spray the front and back cover in Turquoise. Spray the flowers in Grape Fizz and the leaves in Sour Apple. • Set aside to dry. • Create the flower by adhering two of the flower layers together. • Add several leaves in place on the back of the flower.
• Adhere a large pearl to the centre of the flower. • Adhere the dry misted papers to the front and back covers of the fan deck. • Place the pages back between the covers, and tighten the screw in place. • Adhere the flower in place, on the front cover. • Add a little bit of liquid glue to the back of the sentiment stickers, before positioning them on the cover. This will ensure a tight stick. Enjoy filling the pages of your sweet little book!
Summer Fun Has Begun! Oh! Is there anything more glorious than a perfect summer’s day, spent with the people you love? Things seem brighter, more colour-filled and tailor-made for sweet icy treats and the great outdoors. Whether you are on a lake or at an outdoor market, warm summer memories are waiting!

These past few months have truly reminded us to take time to enjoy the little things. To focus on kindness, relationships, and good health. In the end, it’s all that really matters.
WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THE FALL ISSUE: • Recycling Make-Up…what? • Life During Social Distancing • Pantone Color of 2020 • And so much more!
