I love the process of creating and designing paper crafting projects so much that once I get started, I don’t know when to stop. And by stop, I mean I ALWAYS want to ADD more! More glitter, more drops, more stickers… basically more. I feel the same way about gathering ideas and inspiration for my future projects. Can one ever really have TOO many ideas in their tickle trunk? I think not.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER KATHARINA DOYLE

Capturing the

Energy!

Play Katharina Doyle, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, My Colors Cardstock, Ranger Dylusions acrylic paint, Kelly Creates pen, Sakura Gelly Roll pen, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L 3D Foam Squares and Crafty Power Tape, Rubber Stampede stamp.

It is summer, right now! The world is alive, growing, and full of energy. Put the window down and notice how everything and everyone is moving. Hold that in your mind for a moment. Now bring this into your scrapbooking! Whether it is a kid in midair over the water, a dog at play, or wind moving the trees, this is the energy we want to capture and communicate. Sometimes our work is contemplative and reflective. I am suggesting that this is the season for pop and energy! Consider these three elements to capturing energy: photos, target words, and colour. No surprise, summer photos are always our favourites. The light tends to be good, we are often having

12 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

fun, and energy is present. As you take pictures and review the ones you already have, keep an eye out for the ones that capture spontaneous, carefree, and physical. This is when our energy gets expressed. Words matter… it’s been said many times. In this case, few words matter even more. When portraying high energy moments, do NOT belabour the point. Remember how Batman comics read with “Pow!” “Bang!” or “Pop!” Keep your words limited and focused on the action and mood. Colour sets the mood. Bright colours are obviously associated with summer and play, but this oversimplifies things.

The key is to use supporting colours in the background that align with your sense of the moment. In other words, bring integrity to your memory of the story. Check out the SPORTS feature (pages 40–52) in this issue, and see how you can feel energy from the layouts. They use these three elements to hold your interest and effectively convey that energy. I love that scrapbooking will enable us to look back on our layouts years from now to recall awesome moments. Wishing you all an amazing summer full of energy!

Katharina

DIY Home Décor with Photos These “Do It Yourself ” photo projects inspire us to get our photos off our phones, computers, and hard-drives and on display in our homes where we can enjoy them each day.

I love having my favourite photos on display throughout my home. They are everywhere, including my bedroom, stairwells, our front entry (where I have 30 years of annual family portraits hung) and countless places in-between (Figure 1). Most of them are simply printed and framed because I am obsessed with collecting unique frames, but I also love finding creative DIY ways to showcase my favourite people, vacations, and memories in my home. With digital images captured so effortlessly now, it’s easy to neglect printing them to display and enjoy. Sadly, I’ve also heard horror stories of people losing years of photos and memories due to technology issues. The entire point of capturing photos is to preserve and enjoy the memories, so here are a few super-easy ways to add more of your favourite personal photos into your everyday life through home décor!

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

At the top of our stairs in the hallway is our “Travel Wall” (Figure 2), where we created a collection of panoramic photos from assorted trips around the world. These are created in three easy steps: 1. Cut MDF wood the same size as your prints. Gesso the base and paint the edges black. Let dry. 2. Apply Decoupage to the board. Make sure it is completely and evenly covered. 3. Align the corners, as you carefully place the photo down onto the wood. Use a brayer to remove any air bubbles. Let dry. Some other DIY home décor photo ideas include painting canvases and then simply adhering a smaller photo in the middle for a minimalist look (Figure 3). You can even create your own mini-gallery, using assorted silicone mold frames and paints to showcase miniature portraits in a fun way (Figure 4).

Figure 2

SUPPLIES: DecoArt Chalky Gesso, DecoArt Decoupage Matte, DecoArt Americana Acrylic paints (Black, White Wash, Turquoise Blue), DecoArt Elegant Finish Metallic Paint in Rich Espresso, DecoArt Extreme Sheen Metallic Paint 24K Gold.

got game?

Whether you and your family participate in sports competitively or casually, there is no denying the benefits of sport. Lifelong friendships are formed on the fields, teams learn and grow together, and a full range of emotions are experienced and handled through hard-fought wins and devastating losses. Through sport you learn about yourself, how to be a part of a team, and how to manage stress and deal with things out of your control. Of course, scrapbookers document those stories and mark all the wins, losses, and lessons learned! This gallery is filled with inspiring ways to help you create sport pages of your own!

I saw a can of shaving cream in my bathroom the other day, and it caused me to start thinking about the classic shaving cream techniques for paper marbling. This technique has been around for a long time, and it creates beautiful results without taking much money or time. Once my brain started thinking about this, it wandered to other things commonly found in bathrooms and how they could possibly be used for crafting. I’ve previously done an article about upcycling old makeup and nail polish (Fall 2020), but I discovered that there are other common bathroom items that can be repurposed in your projects. Here are some ideas:

• Toilet paper can be easily embossed to make card backgrounds. Put about 4 sheets of toilet paper into your embossing folder, mist lightly with water (or with mica sprays to add sheen and colour) and run through your die cut machine. Let dry. You can then add more colour, if desired, by sponging or spraying with ink. • Toilet paper can also be used to make paper “casts” of stamps. Take 5 or 6 sheets of toilet paper and thoroughly

54 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

wet the stack. Lay these sheets on top of your stamp and gently press into the stamp’s image with a stencil brush or a similar brush that has stiff bristles. You want to be able to push the wet toilet paper into every crack and crevice of your stamp. Carefully remove your tissue cast from the stamp and set aside to dry.

out with an old gift card, drop two or three colours of dye re-inkers at regular intervals on the shaving foam surface, and then use a wooden skewer to gently swirl and marble the colours. Press a piece of paper into the foam to pick up the ink, and then scrape off the shaving foam and let dry. You can also scrape this coloured shaving foam through a stencil for a completely different look.

• Empty toilet paper rolls can be used for a surprising number of things. Use toilet paper rolls to stamp circles or hearts with paint or ink, cut across toilet paper rolls to create thin strips that can be used to make different ornamental designs or even cut the roll apart and use as a piece of heavy brown paper to create tags and other embellishments. Toilet paper tubes also make great minialbums: just flatten the rolls, decorate with paper, and attach together with binder rings or ribbon. A standard-sized shipping tag fits perfectly into the flattened roll.

• Epsom salts can be used with watercolour paints to create texture. Sprinkle salt crystals on top of wet watercolours and let dry completely. The crystals will draw some of the pigment and leave a speckled, textured look.

• Vaseline or other petroleum jelly can be used in various resist techniques. These are a little messy but fun to do. For a stamping resist, spread a thin layer of Vaseline on a stamp, and press onto glossy paper. Add alcohol ink and blending solution around and on top of the stamped image. When the ink dries, rub the Vaseline off. For a stencil resist, spread Vaseline through a stencil to regular cardstock, cover with ink or paint, then rub the Vaseline off with a paper towel.

• The shaving cream technique has a few variations, but the basic idea is to squirt a layer of shaving cream into a paper plate or disposable foil pan, smooth it

• Repurpose first aid supplies such as band aids, gauze, and tape as embellishments for cards. • Makeup sponges and Q-tips work well for adding paints, inks, or chalks. • Old combs, hair picks, and hair pins are great for adding texture to texture pastes or paints. • Use dental floss as string to thread buttons, hang paper banners, or string a few beads.

“When Creative Scrapbooker Magazine sent out the call to upcycle something from the bathroom, I knew it was time to give this idea a try. I got out a mould, some clear gesso and toilet paper. I layered it, alternating toilet paper layer with a gesso layer and pushing it into the mould with a thin pallette knife. Add more toilet paper as needed to firm it all up. I did this working on the pocket side of the mould – periodically checking the front to make sure there were no air bubbles. When I was satisfied that the mould was packed enough, I let it air dry overnight. I was amazed at how easily it pulled out of the mould. It remained highly malleable, and accepts inks readily. It can be embossed on as well as cut with scissors.” ~ Pam Colosimo

BeYouTiful You Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Lavinia Stamps stencils and stamps, VersaFine ink, The Stamps of Life dies, Zig Marker, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L adhesive.

I am not sure how this is possible, but my baby grandgirl, Rianne, is about to turn 25. What “trick of time” is this? It seems like yesterday she was just a tiny, curly blonde-haired baby. Personally, I do believe in fairies, and I believe that these mischievous, magical creatures must be speeding time up when we’re not looking! In celebration of her birthday, I wanted to create something very special, and 64 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

of course, customized for her. What could be better than an explosion card, loaded with a few of my favourite photos of her from her 24th year. To set the stage for this magical card, I used Lavinia’s mystical fairy stamps and background stencils. I paired them with my favourite medium—pigment ink (which in itself is pretty magical). It allowed me to create layers and layers of beautiful images as I worked from

lightest to darkest colours and back to light again. The versatility of this ink never ceases to amaze and delight me. I am so looking forward to using these very same techniques to create a wonderful scrapbook page preserving these memories for all times. Happy Birthday, Rianne!

I felt alone. Frustrated. I wanted to give up. with Allison Orthner

"The main purpose of Soul Art is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do."

66 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

I honestly don’t remember the situation I was in, but I clearly remember the feelings of despair. I called my friend Christy, and she invited me to join her art class that evening “to help soothe your soul,” she said. I went, and that experience changed EVERYTHING. It’s difficult to explain, but Christy guided me through not only creating a “PIECE of art,” but also a “PEACE of art” within me. Soul ART was eventually birthed out of that experience, as I learned first-hand how creating can soothe the heart and soul. In fact, that is the main purpose of Soul ART… to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do. The end result is meaningful art on a canvas, within a journal, a “soulbook,” Bible, or even on a piece of cardboard from an Amazon box!

SOUL ART On first glance, Soul ART projects look like typical mixed media, but the truth is so much deeper, symbolic, and meaningful. Incorporated into the process and every detail is a life lesson and a visual reminder that brings perspective as you reflect back on your art.

HONOR YOUR SCARS Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: DecoArt Decoupage Matte, DecoArt Chalky Gesso, DecoArt Americana acrylic paints (Burnt Umber, Black, Turquoise Blue, Carousel Pink, and Citron Green), Soul ART tissue and quotes, assorted napkins, book and hymnal pages and stamps on a piece of cardboard.

Scraps of Info Allison also included a piece of her grandpa’s Bible and Christy’s name as part of her heart in honor and remembrance of both.

Music, flowers and butterflies remind us that we can still grow strong and beautiful in spite of our wounds and scars. There is always hope even amidst the pain. The bird is a reminder to help others find their way up and out from the darkness of pain. The cross is a symbol that God is always with you and brings hope and comfort if you let Him. Stitches indicate where wounds have healed, but left scars and permanent marks on our lives. The wounded and torn heart shows the impact painful experiences can have on us, our lives, and our souls. The dark ground illustrates assorted painful wounds we have all experienced.

Scraps of Info For more information, please visit SoulArt.ca

Soul ART’s Vision is: To connect. To create. To grow. Together. Life is better together. The past couple of years with Covid have shown me how important it is that we don’t neglect to gather together to grow, learn, and journey through the good and the bad alongside others. When done in a group, Soul ART helps us know we are not alone in our experiences.

68 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

The topics we tackle in Soul ART are varied, and ones that many can identify with: • Friendship • Grief • Worry • Gratitude • Soul, Body, Spirit • Tears • Younger Self • Soul Goals

Lettering Titles on Layouts

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

There’s no better way to make a statement on your scrapbook layout than by hand-lettering your own title! Drawing large block letters onto a watercolour background is easier than you might expect. If you don’t want to draw your own letters, you can type them out and print them to use as a tracing template or stencil. 70 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

This design element works best if it is a short word. Otherwise, the lettering will not fit on your 12″ × 12″ page. I made the title “Beach Baby” for this beautiful photo of my niece who lived in a tropical beach town for the first two years of her life.

watercolour paper. I chose blue, orange, and light brown to echo the sunset on the beach in my photo.

1. Choose any word to suit your photo, and gather your supplies: watercolour paints, watercolour paper, brush, water, pencil, waterproof black pen. Let’s get started! 2. Practice drawing your large word on scrap paper; use a ruler to measure the top and bottom lines so that all the letters are the same height. 3. Choose two or three watercolours, and paint them across your

3

4. Draw the title word onto the painted paper with pencil, and then trace over with a black permanent pen. Erase your pencil lines. 5. Using scissors, cut around the edges of the letters to give the word shape. NOTE: I also used a brush pen to write “baby” on top of this watercolour word, but that is optional. I also used a brush pen to write a quote beside the photo. I really encourage you to hand-letter and use your own writing on your layouts because your handwritten words make those memories even more meaningful.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

WATERCOLOUR BOOKMARKS

1. Cut a piece of watercolour paper to 2 ½″ × 8″. Load a watercolour brush

with Ranger Distress Oxide Ground Espresso ink. Draw a line, or in this case—a tree trunk.

3. Paint the branches, using Ranger Distress Oxide Forest Moss ink.

Using your waterbrush, start at the top and create smaller branches, gradually making them wider as you paint down the tree. Criss-cross back and forth across the tree trunk as you are moving down.

5. Add more highlights to the branches and tree trunk, using Ranger

Distress Oxide Rustic Wilderness and Fossilised Amber inks. Think about where the light is coming from, and use these lighter and brighter colours to create light. Load your highlight colours onto your watercolour brush to highlight the tops of the branches, tree trunk, and even a little grass.

2. Create a shadow by applying layers of the same-coloured ink down the

left-hand side of the tree trunk. Repeat until desired darkness.

4. With the same dark green ink and your waterbrush, add another layer of

ink onto the bottom of each branch. This creates a shadow at the bottom and a highlight on the top

6. Stamp a sentiment or two, using Ranger Jet Black Archival ink. I tinted

some ribbon with the Ranger Distress Oxide inks and then stamped a sentiment. Use a hole punch at the top to string the decorative ribbon through. Use a corner rounder punch on the corners.

CREATE A 3D PICK UP TRUCK

1. Using The Stamps of Life 5″ × 7″ Truck Fold-it die set, cut out one truck

body from metallic cardstock; one detailed body from white cardstock, and one detailed body from grey cardstock. Save the grey detailed body for another project.

3. Apply grey, black, red and yellow pigment ink to the individual parts

including the white tires, headlight, taillight, grill, and side mirrors as above.

5. Adhere the embossed black detailed body to the grey body using a thin

3D double-sided tape. Next apply a thick layer of YES! Adhesive to the sculpted parts, using a toothpick. This adhesive gives a true 3D effect.

2. Apply black pigment ink to the white detailed body and emboss with

clear embossing powder. Repeat as many times as you like to create an even thicker body.

4. Using a stylus and foam mat, sculpt the black tires, grey fender flairs,

and grey bumpers.

6. Adhere all the parts in place as shown. Add Tonic Studios Nuvo Drops

to the headlights.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

DESIGNING A 12″ × 12″ GRID STYLE LAYOUT

1. Start by cutting out sixteen 3″ × 3″ squares

2. Arrange them on a 12″ × 12″ piece of cardstock. Think of each square

as a mini-canvas.

3. Cut out a variety of 3″ × 3″ squares from patterned paper, cardstock,

and your photos. I like to use the Project Life App.

5. You can also cut your photos, patterned paper, or cardstock to fill two

squares or four squares. The sky is the limit.

4. Now start playing. Replace the white squares with your photos,

cardstock, or patterned paper squares.

6. Once you decide on placement, decorate or embellishment each little

square canvas. Here is another example of the GRID technique in action.

Journaling is the very heart of scrapbooking. Not only does it record important facts for future generations, such as who, what, when, and where, but it can also be cathartic to the storyteller who is sharing their intimate thoughts and feelings. Given its integral role in scrapbooking, why not add some creativity by twisting those words into interesting shapes that also help tell the story. For example, journaling about reading habits become the pages of a book or Christmas memories become part of the Christmas tree. What a delight to see stories come alive and take shape in your memory books! . 98 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022

Loving This Summer “I backed the ice cream cone with patterned paper the colors of some of my favorite ice cream flavors. If you've never seen blue ice cream before, you're probably not from the Upper Midwest region of the United States. Blue Moon ice cream is delicious! I filled each segment of the shaker with chunky glitter for a sparkly finish.” ~ Dana Tatar

Our Creative Scrapbooker team enjoyed the many heartwarming stories shared during the Crop and Vendor Faire. See you in Arlington, TX, on June 10th & 11th and in Lancaster, PA, on July 29th & 30th! For information on all their upcoming events, visit ckscrapbookevents.com.

Sherry Webster takes her copy of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine with her everywhere she goes! We love seeing Sherry relax and enjoy our WINTER 2021/22 issue while on vacation in Hawaii and our SPRING 2022 issue while in San Francisco!

Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2022 143

In the End There is no doubt that art soothes the soul. Our world has been turned inside-out and upside-down in the last few years with the challenges and trials of a little virus called Covid. The caring and nurturing of our mental health has never been more important. Let art guide you, help you through, and settle your mind. Paint, sew, bake, sing, craft… the art is the limit. In the end, a little Soul Art may be all you need.
