LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Virtual SUCCESS COVID has made the world so much smaller, and in my opinion…that is a GREAT thing! After going back and forth for a few weeks, we decided that holding our 13th annual Great Canadian Scrapbook Carnival in Edmonton and Calgary just would not be the same allowing for all the social distancing regulations. Honestly, we are a team of huggers, and an event with no hugging would be WEIRD. So, to the internet we turned and held our first ever Great Canadian Virtual Scrapbook Carnival. It was a HUGE SUCCESS! This event made us remember how SMALL our world is. Regardless of geography, there are scrapbookers all over this beautiful planet who love to cut and paste, ink and stamp, story tell, giggle, but most important of all: support each other. Throughout the weekend, there were numerous technical glitches here and there, but EVERYONE pitched in to make sure no scrapper was left behind. WOW! We were humbled that more than 5000 participants from around the globe found their way to our little piece of the internet and spent two glorious days creating with us. THANK YOU! The halls are booked for next year for our 14th annual IN PERSON event in both Edmonton and Calgary. We cannot wait to hug you all again. AND for those who live too far away, we are going to make our VIRTUAL carnival an annual event as well! Stay tuned!

Allison Orthner created this map and QUICKLY coloured it in as scrapbookers from around the world checked into the event. HOW COOL! Check out these two fabulous layouts designed during the virtual carnival by two of my favourite people! They totally captured the fun and energy of the event. We didn’t plan for the theme to be REFRESH but “refreshing it was”. (That is a bit of an inside joke for all the attendees!)

Until then, stay safe and well, my friends! That really is all that matters. Happy Holidays!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

GET AWAY Katharina Doyle, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: My Colors Cardstock, Ranger Dylusions paint, The Robin’s Nest Dewdrops, Sakura Gelly Roll pen, unknown brads, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

There is something magical about a printed image, but…

We all have them…hundreds, if not thousands, of images in jpeg format. This winter, I recommend you take time to dig back into your hard drives and smartphones and get them printed! Remember how you asked people to pose for a photo, or made the extra effort to wait for the perfect sunset? What did you do with these images? Perhaps, you enjoyed the feedback from social media for a few days. I get it: the immediate satisfaction through social media is strong. But, let’s be honest: Facebook is not where you will see/share those images in the future. Whether your pictures are of your children, your travels, your pet, your joy, or your pain, it’s sharing them that keeps the memories active in our 12 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21

present lives. People have been using photographs to communicate memories for over 100 years. So, liberate your pictures from their “data files” the old-fashioned way—print them. Get busy revisiting older memories as you scrapbook the stories you need to tell. Whether it was the arrival of a baby, a graduation, a vacation, or a lost relative, prepare the memories to be passed along…and also for yourself. Consider asking friends to send you their pictures. Even your children. No doubt you will get some unexpected images that will tell fun stories and help capture everyday life…the stuff that will otherwise fade into oblivion. They will thank you years from now! Since you are on your phone, there are many apps that make printing your

photos in various sizes easy. My personal favorite is socialprintstudio.com or the app: Print Studio. Their print quality is amazing! For more great apps, check out our "There's an App For That" article on page 30. Remember, it does not matter if the photos were taken 10+ years ago, just scrap what you want to share. The longer we put this off, the less likely we are to rediscover these pictures and the memories that go with them. Your family will thank you for saving them from jpeg data files!

Wishing you a creative and wonderful winter, Katharina

One of my favourite apps for quickly adding text to a photo is called Word Swag. It is free and very easy to use. You can either upload your own photo to the app or use one of the 1.4 million free backgrounds. Then simply type in your desired text and choose a text style from the multitude that are available. It is a great way to make quick greeting cards or add an inspirational quote, page title, or journaling to a photograph for scrapbooking. Have fun experimenting with it. There are so many creative possibilities!

Social D i s t a n c i n g We are going through what is hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime event. The Covid-19 global pandemic is an experience shared around the entire world. We’ve all learned phrases such as “flattening the curve,” “social distancing,” and “speaking moistly,” and we’ve all excused ourselves from our normal routines. In a true testament to the human spirit, after our lives were turned upside-down, we set out to create a new normal and, as these scrapbookers documented, life goes on.

Normal life ground to a halt, and we retreated to our homes with time on our hands. Long before I started scrapbooking, I did petit point and counted crossstitch. Like many other hobbies, the supplies were boxed up and put away when life became busy. I think that’s true for many people as I often see cross-stitch supplies being given away or sold cheaply online or in second-hand stores. Embroidery thread, cross-stitch fabric, and even old patterns can be repurposed into unique cards and scrapbook pages. For those of us who like to cross-stitch, consider creating little cross-stitch projects to accent cards and layouts. There are plenty of free patterns on the internet, with others being available for a nominal charge on Etsy. You can use scraps of even weave or Aida cloth from your stash, plastic canvas, or perforated paper.

There are even metal dies on the market that will create a grid of tiny holes to make stitching easy. Even if you’ve never been a needlework fan, embroidery thread is inexpensive, and a little hand-stitching can go a long way. For hand-stitching on paper, be sure to pierce holes first using a needle or paper piercer to avoid ripping the paper. A piece of corrugated cardboard or foam mat under the paper will make this easier. Thread a larger size embroidery needle with some embroidery thread and start stitching. Depending on the look that you want, consider anywhere between 2 and 6 strands of thread. I adhere the loose ends with a piece of scotch tape when I am starting or ending stitching on paper. Try handstitching around die cuts or patterned paper design elements, or just poke a few holes in a line or square. Even a few hand-stitches can add so much texture and beauty to your projects.

THE

ORG AN IZED Crafter

By Tiffany Spaulding

10 Strategies for Organizing Your Craft Space 1. Decide on a system and stick with it The biggest mistake and perhaps the most common mistake crafters make is having different systems for each type of craft supply, or even worse— no system at all. If you’ve followed along with my Organized Crafter articles, videos, or classes, you know that I call my preferred system the 4 Section System. This system separates your supplies into four major categories: Alphabets & Numbers, Themes & Sentiments, Holidays & Seasons, and The Rainbow.

3. Create a catalogue Having a quick reference to everything from dies and stamps to paints and markers can help ensure you’re maximizing the use of the products you own. Create a catalogue for these items, and you’ll use them much more often. (For instructions on how to create a catalogue, read The Organized Crafter in the Summer 2020 Issue, p. 96).

2. Purge Make the most of your crafting time by limiting the amount of time it takes to find the supplies you want to use. To find things quickly, you need to use your space efficiently and have less stuff to dig through. If you don’t love it, then lose it!

4. Prioritize Prioritize your most used items, and organize those things first. This is helpful in a couple of ways: you have immediate access to things you need, and there is less stress and frustration when you sit down to craft. Less stress will inspire you to craft more and to organize more.

68 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21

5. Avoid the mish-mash, jumble box An easy solution is to combine paper-sorting trays and small drawer organizers/baskets to create a minidrawer system for your smaller supplies. These things are available everywhere from the budget-conscious Dollar Store to higher-end storage stores. Clear bins can be useful, but not if you have to dig through them. The small drawer organizers/baskets can be pulled off the shelf and brought to your workspace, and then easily replaced when you’re done. Best of all, you can see what’s in each little drawer.

ORGANIZED CRAFTER

6. Roll with it! Carts can be an organizational life saver I encourage people to create a “U” shaped workspace where the majority of supplies can be accessed by simply rotating in your chair. That is not always possible. Putting your supplies on wheels can be a great solution. Group supplies together by use, such as die cutting, stamping, painting, etc., —and when you want to use a particular group of supplies, you can roll it into your workspace.

7. Things inside of things, inside of other things... When you put things inside of things inside of other things, getting to them becomes difficult, and they won’t get used. By organizing your supplies in such a way that getting to them takes less effort, you’ll use them more often.

9. Go vertical Products that are stored vertically generally take up less space and are more accessible. Consider doing this with paper pads, “club” boxes, ink pads (check with the manufacturer), and even certain types of storage bags; you might be surprised what you can tip up on its side when you start looking around your craft room.

8. Maximize your space Prioritize your most used items, and organize. Here are a few ideas to make the most of your available space. • Look at the spacing between your shelves. Are there large empty spaces above the items you have stored there? Try adding a few more holes to the shelving unit and filling in the gaps with more shelves.

Both of these cabinets contain the same items, but by taking everything vertical, we’ve made it easier to access. Now we’ve got plenty of room to add new items. ‘’

9. Don’t fear the rainbow! • Do you have a door or a closest door in your craft room? Over the door shoe organizers work well for a variety of craft supplies and tools. • Turn exposed sides of your shelving units into storage. Command style hook(s) can easily be added to either solid-sided shelving or open-sided shelving units. These can be really handy for tools you’re using all the time, such as scissors or rulers.

Organizing and storing your embellishments together by colour will simplify the searching process every time. The other huge advantage is you’ll use more of your craft stash with every project.

Storytelling through Photos How to Look Your Best in Photos By Allison Orthner

I LOVE A GOOD STORY. Comedy, romance, suspense, intrigue. I love it all!

As humans, we are drawn to stories. It is why we watch TV, read novels, and go to the movies. It is also the foundation of why we scrapbook—to tell our stories. With photography, every photo captures a moment, but not all photos tell a story.

Why are some photos just a picture, while others draw you into a story? I’ve been analyzing this recently while following a few “photog-crushes” of mine (JeremyCowart.com and BenjaminCole.com), who are master storytellers through their images. This type of photo not only requires skills in composition, lighting, etc., but storytelling images also seem to contain a few other common traits:

EMOTION. We are drawn to emotion, especially extremes: happy is nice, but ecstatic is magnetic; sad is moving, but despondent is compelling. In Figure 1, we are immediately drawn to the deep emotion on the face of the man dancing with the bride. It tugs on our heart, and once we know the real story, it intensifies even more.

(Figure 1) A lot of women hate themselves in photos and many avoid the camera altogether. I get it. I have my days too where I let the inner critic stop me, but I’m working hard to fight back. I’ve spent the last 8 years studying how to pose and capture any woman looking her best, including myself.

BY ALLISON ORTHNE

R

"Every single woman is worthy of being captured looking her best in photos." I don’t care what age, size, or body shape enters my studio, I believe they 1. THE REAL STORY: danced with her uncle who lost his wife of anyone. areFigure worthy of being seen, This andbride I can capture a beautiful portrait (her aunt) the week prior to the wedding. Before passing, the aunt requested Through the years, I have sadly heard complaints about the same three this dance in her honour. Bethany Bakker bphotography-sd.com areas of concern: weight, arms, and chins. However, I have learned how to pose women to address those “problem areas” and help them look and feel their best.

78 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

1. Turn to a 45˚ angle and push your tush away from the camera. Every body type looks better at an angle instead of straight on (Figure 1). Popping your hip and pushing your tush away from the camera not only reduces the focus on that area, but it naturally bends the front knee forward giving the whole body a more complimentary shape. 2. Slim your arms. No woman wants larger arms, but all arms look wider when pressed against your body (Figure 2). Instead, create a more slender looking arm by moving your hand to your hip or thigh so it is away from the body and slightly bent. 3. “Pigeon” or push your chin forward and slightly down. It’s easy to have an extra chin show up especially when laughing. So even though it might feel unnatural, push and extend your chin forward and slightly down to help define your jawline (Figure 3).

Finally, wear something you like, remembering that darker colours are more forgiving. (Maybe even give fake eyelashes a try!) Life is too short to not have some fun as you capture the best version of you! Most importantly, be intentional about including yourself in more photos and inside your scrapbooks. You are worthy of being seen.

Bubble Lettering

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

Every era has its lettering style favourites, and mine from the 1980s is bubble lettering! It is so easy and cute that anyone can quickly master it. Use this fun style for cards, layout titles, your art journal, planner, and home dÊcor. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop drawing this simple, playful alphabet! 86 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21

HAND LETTERING

1

2

3

4

5

Step 1. With a pencil, lightly draw

Step 5. Now embellish with colour-

your basic alphabet letters at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall. Space them apart so you have room to draw the bubbles.

ing, patterns, or paint…or make these bubbles into balloons by adding little triangles, strings, and bows.

Step 2. Draw a really wide outline around each letter. If there are interior spaces, make them really small.

TIP: Practice first with pencil on lined or grid paper. When you’re drawing your word on blank cardstock or watercolour paper, use a ruler to draw guidelines that the letters will sit on and touch at the top.

Step 3. Trace over your letters/word with permanent black ink.

Step 4. Once you are sure the ink is dry, carefully erase all the pencil lines.

Play around with colours and designs. I made a couple of seasonal

cards, but these ideas can be modified for any special occasion or time of year. I added wavy lines to create ‘snow’ bubble letters on the “let it snow” card. After painting these snow caps light blue with watercolour ink, I added a layer of iridescent ink to make it sparkle. This adorable lettering style is easy for kids to do, too. There’s something happy about bubble lettering; it makes everyone smile! Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21 87

OH Christmas Tree!! There is nothing I love more than setting up Christmas trees all around my house usually starting in November! There is just something special about draping them with ornaments and lights that fills my soul with love and peace and reminds me of the true reason we celebrate Christmas‌ the birth of Jesus. by Allison Orthner

BIBLE ART JOURNALING

USING AN IPAD TO TRACE

1. Install the free “Lightbox Trace” app on your iPad. You can use this app to display any image you wish to trace or as a blank screen or light box to trace an image you have already printed. Both work great!

2. In Lightbox Trace, select the image you wish to trace and resize it to fit your page.

3. Place the iPad beneath the page in your Bible where you want to add it to.

Once sized, use the “lock” feature to keep it at that size and to prevent the image from moving around as you trace.

Using a pencil, gently trace the image onto your page. Once done, remove the iPad and you are ready to colour and finish your page. Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21 89

By Cathie Allan

All I want for Christmas is Great Big Stamps!

I LOVE big stamps. I love big background stamps, large Christmas stamps, oversized floral stamps, larger text images. They always catch my eye and my stamping brain simply goes into overtime when I see them; there are just so many ways I can enjoy using them. For these projects I focused on some amazing 6” x 6” images from Impression Obsession. I used the Free Spirit Dot Solid to create the backgrounds for all the panels of my card. I used my Cathie Allan’s Position-it, so I could print perfect images. Then I used the same image to create the background for my scrapbook.

116 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2020/21

I used a couple of different techniques to give the bow a 3D effect and then added embellishments. I then used my 6” x 6” images to create a family village. There will be more, as I have four wonderful, grown children, who each have their loved ones, and of course five crazy, awesome “grandamazing children”. There will be a Christmas house for each of them and one for Brian and me, as well. With my stamps and my pigment ink, I create original projects that will stand the test of time because pigment ink is the most stable and light fast of all our stamping mediums. These projects will look as good as the day I made them when I am no longer stamping on this planet. (I plan to sneak a few into heaven, lol).

So from my family to yours, MERRY CHRISTMAS …. And may the memories of your Christmas 2020 be your favourite ones.
