LETTER FROM THE EDITOR JACKIE LUDLAGE

The Mystery of a

QR Code Okay – there are so many of you that just giggled! Scanning a QR Code with your smartphone and it directing you to a website with more information, has been around for many, many, many years! I have (embarrassingly so) been very late to this party!

Scan for more info about our Exclusive VIP Club

When we moved our youngest son to university this fall, it was the first time in literally a year or more, due to Covid, that we physically sat down to dine in a restaurant. (Yes, it took food to get me up to speed on this technology ). Adhered to the centre of each table in the restaurant was a QR Code that directed you to the menu. After fumbling with my phone and my lovely children rolling their eyes at me, I turned my phone to camera mode, and hovered over the QR Code. BAAM! Like magic, the menu appeared! I was crazy impressed! LOL (Again, I know many of you are giggling as you read this!)

Now that the mystery of the QR Code has been unraveled in my brain, I just had to start including these little gems in our magazine. AND make sure that if there is anyone out there slow to the party, that you are not missing out! What a fabulous way for you to WATCH projects that are featured in the magazine being made in videos! OR instantly find information just by hovering your phone while in camera mode, over a QR Code! Wow! Not to mention the endless possibilities in scrapbooking to add a QR Code to a project you created and link it to a video associated with the story. So fun! YES – this technology isn’t new! But it seriously felt like Christmas for me when it finally applied to my real-life situations! As you flip through the pages of the Winter issue, when you see the QR Codes, just turn your phone to camera mode, hover over, and see where this little code will take you! If you have been using QR Codes forever, you are AWESOME! If this is your first time, MERRY CHRISTMAS from me to you!!!! Enjoy! Have a wonderful holiday season, my friends!

Finding

My Message

Watching You Katharina Doyle Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: My Color’s Cardstock, Ranger Pigment ink and embossing powder, Sakura Gelly Roll pen, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L E-Z Runner and 3D Foam Sqauares.

When asked what I love most about scrapbooking, my answer is always “the journaling.” As the images come together, I begin to think about who will see the piece and what I want them to know. This is when I clarify my message through writing. Let’s not get carried away: my messages are not always intended to bridge 20 years to the next generation. Sometimes they are simple and fun—capturing the fun of a party, the silliness of a laughing kid, or the beauty of a winter day. I try to use journaling to pinpoint what I loved about the moment… what I want the viewer to take away.

way to pay attention to your audience. As you are working with an image, start journaling about yourself: • Where was I when this image taken? • What did I hear, smell, or do at that time? What was I thinking? • What do I want to share from this memory? For some inspiration, check out our “Shape up Your Journaling” feature on page 98 of this issue. It won’t be long before you distill what is most important—the feeling or experience you want to share. Just start and see where it goes! Warm hugs,

If you are new to journaling, don’t be intimidated. Think of journaling as a

Everyone who lives in a snowy climate knows that a little snow never stops anyone from having fun! There are so many winter pursuits to enjoy, such as ice fishing, skiing, tobogganing, or curling, that the snowy days will pass by too fast! Thank goodness for scrapbookers who take those memories and create pages that help slow down time and preserve those frosty adventures, and then share them with us for inspiration!

Inspired by

Scandinavian Folk Art

Timeless, enduring, and cheerful, the repeated patterns of Scandinavian folk art abound with bright colours, bold graphics, and natural motifs. It’s no wonder these visually lively prints have made their way into many paper artists’ projects. They are especially suited to winter projects, as they often exude a sense of warmth and coziness, but as you can see in this gallery, application of Scandinavian folk art is limited only by an artist’s imagination!

BOLD & BRIGHT

Storytelling through Photos By Allison Orthner

I LOVE A GOOD STORY. Comedy, romance, suspense, intrigue. I love it all! As humans, we are drawn to stories. It is why we watch TV, read novels, and go to the movies. It is also the foundation of why we scrapbook—to tell our stories. With photography, every photo captures a moment, but not all photos tell a story.

Why are some photos just a picture, while others draw you into a story? I’ve been analyzing this recently while following a few “photog-crushes” of mine (JeremyCowart.com and BenjaminCole.com), who are master storytellers through their images. This type of photo not only requires skills in composition, lighting, etc., but storytelling images also seem to contain a few other common traits:

EMOTION. We are drawn to emotion, especially extremes: happy is nice, but ecstatic is magnetic; sad is moving, but despondent is compelling. In Figure 1, we are immediately drawn to the deep emotion on the face of the man dancing with the bride. It tugs on our heart, and once we know the real story, it intensifies even more.

A Secret Tip! I’ve been a portrait photographer for over 25 years and one of my favourite tips to help capture the relationship between two people is telling one of them to whisper a secret in the other person’s ear. I first tried this with my own kids during a dream photo shoot at sunset by the ocean when they were little (Figure 1 – above). I told Justin to whisper a secret in Lindsey’s ear and her reaction was priceless!

BY ALLISON ORTHNE

Asking one of the individuals you are photographing to whisper a secret to the other is a great way to generate some fun and natural responses and it works for all ages. Figure 1. THE REAL STORY: This bride danced with her uncle who lost his wife The main thing to remember is to be ready!!! Adjust your camera settings (her aunt) the week prior to the wedding. Before passing, the aunt requested and before askBakker them bphotography-sd.com to share a secret together. It is best to this position dance in her honour.you Bethany be a fair distance away and zoom in close so you are not intruding on this private moment, but still able to capture the emotion on their faces. Finally, be sure to take multiple photos including the telling of the secret as well as the assorted reactions.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Over the years, I’ve used this secret tip with a variety of people of all ages:

CHILDREN: In (Figure 2 – top) of two young siblings, I asked big sister to whisper in her baby brother’s ear and the resulting portrait is adorable. I’m pretty sure she just made some funny noises, but it worked! TEENS: I’ve even used it with teenagers (Figure 3 – middle). I was photographing several grad couples and these two definitely had a connection already, but the secret whisper got a huge smile! NOTE: never ask a teenager what the secret was haha! COUPLES: Whether it is engagements, anniversaries or weddings, a secret whisper almost always generates a sweet result especially when love is in the air (Figure 4 – bottom).

Now that my kids are older, I’ve asked both of them what the “secret” was that made Lindsey laugh so hard on the beach, but neither can remember! A true secret lost forever, but the memories of that experience will be treasured and remain in these precious photos of my two kids.

ORG AN IZED Crafter Make Purging Your Super Power! your donated items included in them. Your old die cuts may appear on the teacher’s bulletin board.

#2 – We’re saving products for that “special” page or project If the very idea of purging craft supplies induces nausea or gives you hives, rest assured you’re not alone. Purging is an essential part of getting and staying organized. Developing your Purge Power will ensure your crafting time is spent crafting instead of searching for supplies.

in our lives know we care about them. Each of the products we purchase– especially the unique and special things– come with an emotional connection attached. So, of course, removing those supplies from our collections can seem like a negative emotion.

Four Reasons We Have Trouble Purging

One way to remedy this attachment is by using emotional transference. Giving the items to a person or place with which you have an emotional connection will help you transfer the emotion from the items to the person or place. Doing something with your purge pile that makes you feel good makes it easier to purge. For example, if it’s going to your child’s classroom, you may have the joy of seeing art projects come home with

#1 – We attach to stuff emotionally Crafting is an emotional activity. We do it because it brings us joy, helps preserve our memories, makes our homes and lives more beautiful. The things we create are given as gifts to let the people 54 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2021/22

You purchased some wonderful embellishment or paper and added it to your collection. You flip by it regularly, sometimes stopping to admire how beautiful, fun, or cool it is. You might think, “That would be great on the project I’m currently working on.” But then you think, “This project isn’t quite special enough for this amazing _________. I’ll save it for something better later.” Every project you do– from a simple gift tag to an amazing double-page spread– is SPECIAL. Every memory is worth using the “good” stuff. You may just find that while you’re holding onto those precious little boy embellishments, your kids have grown up and left for college. The felt monkey face is no longer appropriate. Quit waiting; use your GOOD stuff now, or it may end up in the purge box later.

#3 – We don’t want to be wasteful, but think of it this way Try not to focus on what those things cost you financially when you purchased them; instead, try to focus on what those things are COSTING you to keep them. Chances are you’re wasting your space (storing the item), you’re wasting your time (digging past it), you’re causing yourself frustration, which is wasting your creative energy. You’re not being wasteful by getting rid of it. You’re wasting your time, your energy, and your space by keeping it. Try to think about it that way. If it was just one item, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but multiply your space, time, and energy by potentially hundreds of items, and you’ll see that the cost is exponential.

You can set a goal based on weight– “I’m going to purge 5 lbs.;” depth– “I’m going purge 6 inches;” time– “I’m going to purge anything that I haven’t used in 5 years;” or size– “I’m going to fill this box.”

2. SET UP A PURGE BOX Whether you’re doing a major organization project, or you’re just hoping to implement better systems/solutions as you move forward, the purge box is going to aid you in your success. Once you create your purge box, and you put it wherever it’s going to be, consider it a permanent addition to your craftroom.

Let the purging begin! Follow these simple steps to start purging the supplies you’re not likely to use.

1. CREATE A PURGE GOAL. > Set the goal. > Write it down. > Post it up. > Share it with someone.

As you go through your supplies, ask yourself, “What would I use this for?” If you can answer the question quickly, there’s a good chance you’ll use the item. File it in the proper section of your 4 Section System and keep going. But if you don’t come up with an answer, you guessed it…throw it into your purge box.

6. KEEP IT GOING As you work in your craft area, every time you put your hands on something to move it from one place to another, ask yourself, “Will I use this? If so, with what?” And then, depending on your answer, put it away or purge it.

#4 – Future Crafting Success Have you ever thought that if you throw a particular crafting item away, it’s going to somehow jeopardize some wonderful project in the future? Instead, try to think about your crafting success in the present. If you’re not getting things done because you’re too busy searching through the items you don’t need to find the items you want to use, then you’re sacrificing SURE success today for POSSIBLE success in the future. Be successful in your current crafting, and you’ll be motivated and inspired to keep crafting.

You might think, “Wow, this is really outdated.” Things that give you a negative reaction will be easiest to put in your purge box. If you pull something out and your first thought is, “Yikes, this is ugly. I wonder what motivated me to buy it?” then put it in the purge box!

3. IDENTIFY WHERE YOUR PURGED PRODUCTS WILL GO Pick a recipient for your supplies that you consider motivating and inspiring, and it will make purging easier. If you’ve got an emotional attachment, even better. Your church, local school, hospital, favourite charity, or retirement centre would love your extra craft supplies. 4. BEGIN SORTING; START SMALL AND KEEP GOING It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you’re working on an organizing project. Go through your supplies one ScrapRack section, one box, one drawer, one bin, etc. at a time. Completely work through each bin before you start the next. Feeling successful with a small task is essential to staying motivated and avoiding the feeling of being overwhelmed.

ONE LAST TIP Consider shopping with intention. Take a moment to really consider each item you’re purchasing. How will you use it? Do you already have similar products? Where will you store it so you can find it when you want it? Asking yourself these simple questions will go a long way to ensuring the products you purchase end up on projects instead of in your purge box.

5. PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU’RE REACTING TO THE THINGS YOU’RE SORTING As you begin sorting supplies, you’ll have a variety of different reactions.

During the holiday season, brightly coloured gift wrap with beautiful patterns is readily available and can be used to add colour and flair to handmade greeting cards and layouts. Most wrapping paper is of poor quality to be sure, but it’s good enough to make a quick card, and it is very inexpensive, especially if you recycle wrapping from a gift that you receive. Use pieces of gift wrap for card backgrounds, fussy cut interesting elements out of the paper, or

punch simple shapes. I found that foil papers were harder to cut precisely, so I recommend sticking with regular paper wrap if you need to cut finer details. Small gift bags and decorative gift boxes might also have some nice patterns or graphics that would work well for both card making and scrapbooking.

Faux Whitewashed Wooden Plank Fun

Front Side Creating, painting, stencilling wooden signs has become quite the trend over the last few years. As you’re walking or driving down your street you will often see these decorated planks of wood garnishing someone’s entry. These welcome signs are what sparked my project for the winter issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. I decided that I could create faux wooden planks with my beloved Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, my stamps, and my ink. Once I had found the magic 64 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2021/22

Back Side combination that truly mimicked the wooden plank, I began creating projects. The first project I created using this technique was a gorgeous tag for Christmas for my grandson Elias. This tag will be on one of his Christmas presents this year, and I don’t even have to write Elias’s name on the tag because the photo tells you that it is for him. Next year his mom and dad will hang this fun tag on their Christmas tree because it is truly a personalized decoration that you could not find in any Christmas store.

AND because Super Stock is 130lb white mat cardstock and I use several layers to create my “faux whitewashed wooden planks”, this ornament is sturdy to last through the years. Also, because I used pigment ink, the colours will not fade. The second project I created using this fun technique was of course a scrapbook page. Not only is the entire background on the page done with my faux wooden planks, but I also created another faux

white washed wooden tag to embellish the scrapbook page. The creative journey that I went on to create these two projects has totally inspired me to create more and in different colours. I now have four more faux wooden plank tags—one for each grandchild—that will be decorations for my Christmas tree this year; sometimes you just have to create something for yourself, and I am so happy that my

tree will sport these totally unique decorations that will bring a happy smile to my face every time I look at them.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Gel Printing I’ve been captivated by gel printing since I first saw it years ago, but have not played with it much myself… until I found out we can gel print inside our Bibles!! That was enough to inspire me to gather all the things, play and learn more!! I was intimidated at first, but now I’m loving the results and encourage you to dive into “print pulling” as well.

by Allison Orthner

BIBLE ART JOURNALING MY WAYS ARE NOT YOUR WAYS Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Ranger Gel Printing Plate, Tim Holtz Brayer, Distress inks and Distress Oxide inks, unknown torn paper.

Scraps of Info While driving through BC Canada during some forest fires (opposite page), I captured a hazy sunset photo of the mountains and used it as inspiration for my Bible art.

GEL PRINTING MOUNTAINS

1. On your gel plate, mark off the size of your page with washi tape to help you align it for each print. Tear strips of paper in mountain shapes and select several colours of Distress Inks and Oxides to apply with a brayer.

2. Begin with a very light pink hue as the base, and then use the assorted torn papers as masks on the gel plate to form the mountain ridges. Start with lighter colours and be sure to remove the mask before doing each print.

3. Gradually move down the page getting darker with each print. Repeat until page is filled. NOTE: Very gently pull up the gel plate starting with the side running along the inner binding of your Bible to avoid tears with each pull. Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2021/22 69

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

by Kelly Klapstein

Lettering with

Snowflakes

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

96 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2021/22

Winter snowfalls are so beautiful! When those big, fluffy flakes start drifting down, adding sparkle everywhere, I want to capture them on paper. For my ‘Joy’ holiday card, I painted the letters J and Y and then used watercolour to add a pretty snowflake as the O.

LOVE LETTERS

Drawing and painting snowflakes are easier than you might think. If you break down the snowflakes into simple shapes and lines, you can create beautiful, unique designs. Using stars, circles, diamonds, and hexagons, you can draw and paint really pretty snowflakes!

How to draw snowflakes in steps: • The easiest snowflake to draw or paint consists of intersecting lines with dots or circles at the ends of each line. (Row 1) • We can add to this snowflake by drawing a hexagon at the centre and adding branches to the radiating 6 lines. (Row 2) • Change up the hexagon with a star, and add diamonds instead of branches to create a more elaborate snowflake. (Row 3)

You can paint or draw these snowflakes in blue, purple, or teal colours. I use iridescent paint so that the flakes really sparkle.

Now you can add the beauty of winter snowflakes to your scrapbook layouts, cards, gift tags, planners, mixed media art journals, and more!

Journaling is the very heart of scrapbooking. Not only does it record important facts for future generations, such as who, what, when, and where, but it can also be cathartic to the storyteller who is sharing their intimate thoughts and feelings. Given its integral role in scrapbooking, why not add some creativity by twisting those words into interesting shapes that also help tell the story. For example, journaling about reading habits become the pages of a book or Christmas memories become part of the Christmas tree. What a delight to see stories come alive and take shape in your memory books! . 98 Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2021/22

Sealed with a

Kiss

Christmas cards are generally believed to have first been sent in England in the mid-19th century. With improved printing technology and mail service, they became ubiquitous in the early 1900s. Artists became sought-after, and card designs were fiercely protected from rival printing companies. Today, billions of cards are sent around the world each Christmas. Most are mass-produced, but the very luckiest recipients will receive a hand-crafted card like these gorgeous samples from our SWAK gallery! Merry Christmas to everyone!

Creative Scrapbooker | Winter 2021/22 143

In the End

Winter is no longer coming; it’s here! Firewood has been collected, campers have been winterized, snowbirds have flown to warmer destinations, and our big winter boots have been hauled out of storage, ready for another season. At least that is what winter looks like in our neck of the woods. Regardless of the weather, with every winter comes the beginning of a new year. Light the sparklers, clink the champagne glasses, kiss the person beside you, as you ring in the New Year. In the end – a new beginning is always something to celebrate!

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THE SPRING ISSUE: • Repurposed Drink Labels • Polka Dots • Gift Cards • And so much more!
