CONCEPT
6 Shaping Spaces
Cross Section NTS NTS
The concept behind this project was creating five interlocking spaces. These spaces are equal in size, separate, but connected using light apertures that allow for the user to see completely through all five spaces. The apertures towards the top of the building are larger than the lower level which creates a hierarchy among the spaces. Orange is used for its connotations of warmth, joy and healing. Blue is the complimentary color and serves a balance to the warm tones associated with orange. Orange is placed on the walls because warm colors are known to stimulate the rosins in the brain whereas the blue on the ceiling does the opposite.
BIOPHILIC DESIGN This space was created to become a hospital. Biophilic design is incorporated through the use of apertures. The largest light aperture would be for long term patients, in hopes of a faster recovery as a result of being connected to nature, and the smaller apertures would be reserved for critical patients.

CONCEPT The Fusion Soup Kitchen was focused on designing a soup kitchen for the food insecure communities located in Seattle, Washington. Creating an eclectic space that is unique and differed from the user’s normal setting was the driving force behind the design. The restaurant features varying levels of intimate to public spaces to accommodate a variety of comfort levels and personalities. The use of vivid and split complimentary colors serve as a relief from the dull and rainy climate of Seattle, while promoting healthy habits. Feature Piece

The second diagrams feature a separation between students and teachers with designated spaces at the center for microinteractions to be fostered. And finally, a plan based around levels of privacy being placed around the perimeter and open areas located in the middle.

COLLABORATION CORRIDOR From initial planning, a concept of flipping the conventional office layout upside down and placing the offices in the center of the space came about. This planning produced a “collaboration corridor” which fosters microinteractions and the movement of information.

FEATURE PIECE 1 Created as a wayfinding tool and lighting element, this feature piece is wrapped around the central office spaces to provide users with a clear and direct path of circulation around the space. Included in the design is cork-backed felt presentation boards that can be mounted over the feature piece to hang senior capstone projects in the main lobby. When not in use, these felt boards can be dismantled and stored away. Connected to the feature piece is a graphic element which continues the wayfinding aspect of the piece throughout the central corridor.

Similar to wall streets stock display, this feature piece serves as a hub for displaying vital information for the Real Estate program. This circular datum point would be used to display professor announcements, event details, international news, and real estate developments; helping to facilitate the spread of information. This feature piece is comprised of IMAGIC Weave LED Screens to display graphics and an LED lighting strip above the screen to grab the users attention and draw them in.

CONCEPT AND MATERIALS Power lines work to move large amounts of energy over vast lands to facilitate the movement of information and communication. Using this concept, power lines were the driving force for the design decisions. From distributing energy throughout the space, to serving as a wayfinding technique, communication and energy are dispersed throughout the space through this concept of power lines. Orange was chosen as a color to brand the space for Virginia Tech and allow students to feel connected to their built environment. A variety of seating types and collaboration areas were introduced to foster interactions among individuals and a place where students will feel welcomed to study.

CONCEPT AND BRANDING The concept of reflection emphasizes reflecting back on existing art deco forms within the space while adding streamlined design aspects. The motif that appears on the ceiling helps to add contrast with the carpet and creates flow and rhythm within the lobby. Through the addition of new branding elements, gold details that echo art deco patterns, and the addition of mirrors to intentionally reflect the designs, the past is reflected throughout the space. Project members were Grayson Levitch, Grace Evans, and Ren Gumbert.

PROCESS For this cross-studio collaboration project between Interior Design and Industrial Design, my group members were Gustav Berner, Dana Werlich, Josie Price and Jie Qi. Starting in the process stage, we conducted research to find out more about the Expo and the sub theme of sustainability. My contributions for this project included making the spatial and bubble diagram, the infographic, the brochure, two of the renders, the storyboard and the layout and graphic content in the final poster.

CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER Cross Laminated Timber is a sustainable material because it is made out of renewable wood and it does not require fossil fuels to be burned during production.
OUR GOAL This exhibition was designed to help you gain a greater understanding of the process and the sustainability of felt. By seeing felt in an unexpected, grand form, visitors will experience the applications of different, more sustainable materials which will hopefully broaden your knowledge and viewpoint on how several materials can be substituted with more sustainable options.
INFORMATION For our pavilion, we focused our efforts on educating visitors on the sustainability of felt and the process in which it is made. To do this, we designed a brochure that would be printed in four languages: English, Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic. The brochure contains information on our pavilion, the process NO of making felt and facts on the sustainability of felt.

STORYBOARD
Visitors are greeted at the entrance of our pavilion by a felt structure that is organic in shape. We chose this form because it is a unique application that we hope inspires visitors to think outside the box about sustainability. As visitors move through the structure, they are immersed in the felt while being able to look out to the surrounding expo.
Dubai Expo 2020 31
THE MODULE The module is constructed out of cross laminated timber (CLT) as the base which then continues up vertically to combined with high density felt that is an inch thick. The felt continues up and over the base to comprise an organic form which the visitor is immersed in when walking through.
32 Dubai Expo 2020
RENDERED We modeled our module after a barrel vault to give visitors a obvious path through the structure. This provides visitors a chance to immerse themselves in felt and provides an acoustical relief from the loud noises associated with an expo.

This pavilion aims to give visitors a greater understanding of the process of making felt and ways in which it can be used. Viewers will also learn what makes felt a sustainable material and what aspects might increase its embodied energy. By seeing felt in an unexpected form on such a large scale, visitors will develop a curiosity about the application of more sustainable alternate materials.
WOOL FELT Wool fibers are natural, rapidly renewable resource and is harvested without injuring the sheep. Wool is a biodegradable material. Wool is flame retardant and self extinguishing, it can absorb excess moisture, has insulating properties, neutralizes toxic substances and is resilient. In addition, felt can absorb 21 decibels.
