INTRODUCTION

EDITOR’S MESSAGE

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you all had a memorable break and a warm welcome into 2017! As you begin to return to your typical routines, make sure that one of your resolutions is to continue making a positive impact on the community. The month of January doesn't only consist of weekly events; there are also major events such as Highway CleanUp and Conclave that you should attend. Once sign-up sheets are posted, strive to exceed the required 5 hours. This will show your commitment to service while benefitting you and others in the long run! In other news, this term is coming to a close; that means it's almost time for the selection of the 2017-2018 executive board. If you're considering running for an officer position, don't hesitate to let us know! Your current officers and advisors will be glad to help you learn the responsibilities you must fulfill. I am extremely proud of you Key Clubbers, for you have all touched people’s lives in some way. Let's start off this next semester right!

P A S T EVENTS

Lights on Rice Parade December 2, 2016

On December 2nd, 2016, Kauai High School Key Club participated in the Lights on Rice Parade. Key Clubbers from Kapaa High School also participated. Around 4:30 PM, club members joined together at their designated spot in line for the parade. Since the parade didn't start until 6:00, our officers called for a Division Council Meeting, in which we discussed plans for future club activities. A little after 6:00, we began our walk. Wearing our Christmas lights, Santa hats, and reindeer antlers, we made our way down Rice Street. We marched side by side singing Christmas songs while passing out candy to the little kids. Although we ran out of candy halfway through the walk, we continued on. Lots of the people watching were very familiar with our program and seemed delighted to see us walk by. We also spotted many of our fellow classmates and teachers too. I felt proud to represent our club in the parade. As we neared the end of the parade, the crowd got larger and the cheering louder. We walked past the County Building and we were finished. Despite it only being the 2nd of December, the holiday spirit grew stronger. It was definitely something to remember.

DECEMBER RECAP

Salvation Army Bell Ringing November 25 - December 22, 2016

0

Salvation Army Bell Ringing is devoted to helping local families and people who are in need during the holiday season. Bell ringing is conducted in multiple locations all over the country with thousands of people devoting their time to help their community and others. On Kaua‘i, various community service groups and clubs not only spread the holiday joy, but also encouraged people to support others in need by giving any amount of money they desire. The event is highly community-interactive; it gives people a chance to interact with others throughout the community by caroling and simply saying, “Happy Holidays.” Being in Key Club gave me a chance to help the local community hand-on-hand. Singing holiday songs like Jingle Bell Rock and greeting people with some of my fellow peers for two hours made the experience fun and unforgettable. Overall, it was amazing to see the joy and happiness on everyone's faces. I never thought that giving up my Winter Break and weekend would be such a heartwarming and all-out worth it experience. DECEMBER RECAP

Festival of Lights

December 16-18 & 22-24, 2016

Marking its 20th year, Festival of Lights was a very memorable time for visitors and Key Club members. This event took place every weekend in December at the Historic County Building. For a personal experience, I greeted people and explained what the Festival of Lights was to first-time visitors. All decorations throughout the building were transformed from materials that people normally recycle or throw away such as used CDs, bubble wrap, cans, and plastic bottles—making this festival so special and incredible. One night, there were long lines of people waiting to enter and I managed the visitors entering to prevent overcrowding. I met thousands of amazing people along the way who complimented me and understood when I messed up my words. Other members explained what each tree was made out of, photographed people sitting with Santa Claus, and much more. Nevertheless, we all had to be independent and step out of our comfort zones by interacting with everyone. I would come to this event every year and highly recommend it to the rest of our members.
