INTRODUCTION

TREASURER’S MESSAGE

HEY, EVERYONE! Can you believe it's already February? This is the month of spreading love, so I hope you all take it amongst yourselves to be caring to everyone you meet—especially when serving your community! The required amount of hours for February is 4, and March is 6. Aside from the service projects, we hope to see many of you at this month’s movie night! Although you won't get service hours for attending this club-bonding event, you’ll get to partake in fellowship. Also, the election for new officers will be coming up quickly. If you want to give back to your home club and promote character building, please think about running for an officer position! Best of luck! ♥

Division 22 Makai Conclave January 14, 2017

On January 14, I had my first Conclave experience of going to Maui to elect our LTG for the 2017-2018 term. In all honesty, I was a bit frightened by all the responsibilities at Conclave: I had to carefully listen to what each candidate had to offer for Division 22 Makai, communicate with my home club on Kauai, and take part in contest judging. Nevertheless, I knew that I could overcome my fears by focusing on my responsibilities as an officer and member. This year was my first and last time to experience Conclave, but it will always be the most memorable opportunity I was given. I got to meet with an old friend that moved up to Maui and be closer with the other Key Clubbers at Conclave. Just like how this opportunity impacted me, I hope that someday you'll overcome your fears and go beyond from there on.

JANUARY RECAP

On Saturday, January 14th, Kauai High Key Clubbers met in Mrs. Higashi’s room to participate in Conclave. Conclave is an annual event held to elect the next Key Club LTG, or lieutenant governor. Through Google Hangouts, we joined up with other schools across the state. Two delegates from each club met on Maui, where the election took place; Charlene Tan and Destiny Morden served as ours. During Conclave, we engaged in a caucus session. After hearing speeches from two candidates, the delegates then asked them questions. While the votes were being counted, we created Valentine’s Day Cards for the other clubs. Being a new member, I thought the Conclave experience was interesting and found it inspiring how both candidates passionately spoke about service. It gave me an insight into higher leadership positions and the roles they play in Key Club.

Highway Clean-Up January 28, 2017

Last Saturday morning, Key Clubbers and Kiwanis advisors met up at the old Grove Farm plantation house along Nawiliwili Road. Since this was my first time at a Highway Clean-Up, I didn't know what I was supposed to do. When everybody was finally there, we split up into five groups and made our way to different sections of the highway that needed to be cleaned. Even though I began to sweat, the event was pretty fun. We found cool stuff such as missing socks, old newspapers, and slippers. There were also large items that we broke apart to fit them into our orange trash bags. After we were done, I felt that we did something nice for the environment. I wish we could do this event more often because there was still much more trash--both large and small--that we didn't pick up. Overall, I really liked this event and the Kiwanis Club members that helped us.
