INTRODUCTION

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hey Key Clubbers— We are now in the 2016-2017 Key Club year! I am so excited to start the new year. We have more opportunities to help the community and make more friends with people all over the island. I also want to congratulate the new officers, and say thank you to the previous officers—we had a really good term. To all of our seniors, good luck in college and may you be successful in all that you do. Madison Rayno President, Kaua’i High Key Club

Wilcox Easter Basket-Making

March 11, 2016 Wilcox Easter basket-making was a surprisingly fun event. At this event, Key Clubbers cut out and decorated Easter baskets to give to the students at Wilcox Elementary. When I signed up, I expected just two hours of straight tracing, cutting, and folding. I was so glad to be wrong because the chairperson, Sharae Cua, knew how to keep others entertained. We would talk and play games while being productive all at the same time— it was great! In fact, we all had so much fun that we lost track of the time; we finished almost two hours after the actual time we were supposed to finish. This event taught me to never judge things from the start without actually experiencing them. Patrick Villanueva Member, Kaua’i High Key Club

On March 12th, I, Gwyneth Abella, volunteered to help out at the Bum Run. The Bum Run was an annual event where participants ran and walked around the Po’ipu Bay Golf Course to spread awareness of colon cancer. Everyone was separated into groups with different assignments; my group sat down under a tent before the run began, while greeting runners through a megaphone. We had to show directions for registration and boxer pick-up, as well as provide sunscreen. As people were finishing the run, we stood at the finish line to tell everyone what a great job they all did. We then told the participants where to go and what they could do right after they ran. Meanwhile, other Key Clubbers gave out leis and served people with fruits and water. Seeing everyone’s smiling faces before and after the run was worth cheering for. Threads for Teens March 4, 2016

Threads for Teens called upon Kaua’i High School Key Clubbers to help with the setup for their event at the Kaua’i Marriott. Their goal for this event was to help disadvantaged girls obtain new dresses or outfits along with learning how to accessorize their choices. Key Club was asked to blow up balloons and decorate the ballroom with those creations, which provided an uplifting atmosphere for this charity event that was held the next day. Threads for Teens hosts this event to inspire girls by improving their self-esteem and teaching them lifelong skills in the areas of fashion and beauty. In exchange for our loss of breath, we were able to help out this great event and give the participants a new look on their future!
