MAY RECAP

DCM (May) May 15, 2016

May’s Division Council Meeting was held through video chat with clubs from Kapa’a, Baldwin, Waiakea, Hilo, Kealakehe, and King Kekaulike High School. During the meeting, we interacted with the other Key Clubs within Division 22 Makai, and discussed important matters such as next month’s Officer Training Conference. After the meeting was adjourned, Kaua’i and Kapa’a High Key Club officers created no-sew blankets to give to the patients at Wilcox Hospital. We spent our time cutting and tying strips of fabric until each blanket was completed. Since we all worked on each blanket in groups, we ended up creating four blankets. Overall, this DCM was a wonderful experience that kept us updated on important events and demonstrated how much we can accomplish as a club.

KCC Graduation May 13, 2016

On May 13, 2016, there was the Kauai Community College graduation that was held at the Vidinha Stadium. Before the ceremony started, Key Clubbers arranged themselves into sections on the aisles of the bleachers and entrance so the people would be safe settling down before the ceremony started. Once everyone was seated and ready, the graduation ceremony began at around 6:30 PM. Key Clubbers were able to watch the ceremony as they stood by the aisles. When the ceremony was nearly to an end, the Key Clubbers made sure everyone was seated until all graduates walked onto the field and the entrance to the field was opened. Once the emcee announced that everyone could enter the field, the Key Clubbers made sure that everyone went down safely without letting people get harmed. After everyone left their seats to meet the graduates, the Key Clubbers immediately scanned the bleachers and field to look for trash. Alezza Benting

MAY RECAP

CERT Training

March 30 - May 14, 2016

Hello, my fellow Key Club members! As your secretary, Destiny Morden, joining the CERT program was an unbelievable first-time experience. CERT program is short for Community Emergency Response Team. Basically, as a community, we civilians help others in need during a disaster, like a hurricane, while we wait for emergency personnel such as firefighters, police officers, and EMTs to come. At first, it was a bit slow of a start. However, each class we attended became more hands-on. At the final training on May 14th, we were dressed up as injured victims. It was fun putting on the bloody and fake injuries, and acting as if we were actually hurt in the gym. Learning how to help my community in times of need and playing the role of a victim was a huge learning experience for me. I recommend you to join it next year. Highway Clean-Up May 14, 2016

On Saturday, May 14, I attended my very first Kiwanis Adopt-aHighway Clean Up. We met in the back parking lot of Kmart and then split up into groups to clean up as much trash as we could along Nawiliwili Road. After about an hour of walking along the road and picking up trash, it was nice to see that we had filled a lot of trash bags and it felt good knowing that we all took part in keeping our community clean. Overall, this was a great experience and I highly recommend that all members participate in this event. Not only do members have the opportunity to help clean up our roads, but this is also a fun opportunity to bond with other Key Club members and our sponsoring Kiwanis club. Sharae Cua

MAY RECAP

KHS Graduation May 20, 2016

On May 20th, Key Club was at the Kaua’i High School graduation at Vidinha Stadium. We got to watch the whole ceremony. As the graduation ceremony was coming to an end, the seniors performed their senior song. We then got into groups and made pathways so everyone in the audience could go out on the football field to visit the seniors. When lei giving was over, we were given gloves and trash bags. Along with LEO Club, we picked up flowers, flower petals, leaves, confetti, and all kinds of trash off the field and bleachers on both sides. It was a lot of hard work, but we managed to pull through. After that, we did a final sweep across the whole field to pick up any remaining rubbish. Thanks to our hard work, the Vidinha Stadium was all cleaned up. Lastly, congratulations to the class of 2016! Sheena Torres
