ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This internship training gave me a lot of new experience that could not be achieve in school. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues who have spent their time and effort for teaching me and guiding me throughout my 2 months internship. They have been generous to share their experience and knowledge with me which makes me have a deeper understanding in architecture. 1.0

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION “ The expert in anything was once a beginner.” In a short period of 10 weeks internship, we are exposed to real architect’s working life. This module aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and operations involved in working in architectural / construction practices. The purpose is to facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission fro various drawings from an architectural practice and the range of contract documentation produced to support these drawings. The internship period was started since 2nd of January until 10th of March. The working time for intern had been fixe, which starts from 9.00a.m. until 6.00p.m. every weekdays. During the internship I get a chance to participate as a member of the team here, with being responsible for designing, drawing, and visiting sites.

BACKGROUND OF HABITAT DESIGN ARCHITECTS

2.1 INTRODUCTION OF FIRM HABITAT DESIGN ARCHITECTS SDN.BHD also known as HDA. HDA embraces the disciplines of architecture, interior designer, town planning and urban design. This organization provide these professional services to a diverse range of clients both locally and internationality. HABITAT DESIGN ARCHITECTS SDN.BHD had built its reputation astute collection of talented professional who respond sensitively to the urban fabric of cities and regions by combining knowledge and experience with creative design solutions. HABITAT DESIGN ARCHITECTS SDN.BHD is about people. We value ideas and relish the prospect of collaboration with others who are interested in meeting the challenges of our time.

PROJECTS INVOLVED

4.1 SILVER CHANNEL Site Location

: Mak Mandin, Butterworth, Penang

Specification

During my 8 weeks of internship training, I started off by introduced to my first project, Silver Channel. It is a 3 blocks condominium with 14 floors each situated in Mak Mandin, Butterworth, Penang. This project is still in a submission state where the original architect firm that handle this project is Farid H Khamal architect and now it is referral to HDA. My task is to overlay the original plan on the current plan using proper annotation and line type. Therefore, an obvious comparison between the original plan and refine plan can be seen for the submission. Besides, proper hatching pattern is applied in drawings to clarify the type of materials used in the building. For example, color red code 10 is used to hatch for brick wall and color yellow code 50 is used to hatch for low wall.

4.0 After that, I was tasked to produce details drawings of two types of bathroom. The requirement includes a detail plan and two sections. “God is in the Details�. Through this task, I have learned to illustrate toilet details with considering the arrangement of W.C, basic and even floor tiles. The position and height of the appliances should be correspond to each other to ensure that people will feel comfortable while using the toilet in future.

4.0 On my week 5 of internship program, I get a chance to pay a visit to the site. It is under construction where we need to make an on-site checking. This project was handled by another architect firm before and is back to track recently after it was left no further progress for about 2 years. Following the instruction given by Nelson, me and Shakinah need to check through the minor changes of the show room according the drawings that have been amended. The site visit gave me an opportunity to learn the reality of works or jobs done in construction field.

4.2 CASA PERDANA Site Location

: Mukim 14, Simpang Ampat, Penang

Specification

: Semi D, Terrace house (112 sq.m and 250 sq.m)

Casa Perdana consist of two types of housing, which is semi-detached house and terrace house. This project is in an early stage where it needs to be prepared for submission approval of planning. In this project, I helped in designing the spatial layout of the terrace house in two different built up area. ( 6100mm X 12000mm & 6705mm X 12000mm ).

4.0 Site visit

Figure 7: The surrounding of site I had paid a site visit on 22th January. The site is surrounded by hoarding where I was tasked to take pictures of the site for PKM (planning permission) submission. Some preliminary investigation and basic information about the site have to be provided for PKM. Although surveyor have provided the survey plan, the site condition have to be checked and photos have to be taken as a prove. The site was surrounded by hoarding. I wasn’t managed to go in the site, but through the hoarding, I managed to take some photos and videos of the site. 18


4.0 3D modelling In this project, Mr Timoty and Ms Looi assigned me to design the faรงade of the housing. From some minor details such as windows height, to the design of roof, every detail was taught by them to produce a good design. Furthermore, they have taught me the way to apply design which correspond to the site condition and spaces inside the building. I appreciate their patience in guiding me throughout this project.

4.0 Drawings After the 3D model have completed, its time to produce a series of plans, sections and elevations. I have learned to produce clean and understandable drawings using proper hatching and line weight. This project comes to an end in March, where I have used almost 1 month to produce the 3D models and drawings.

4.3 METRO JELATA Site Location

: 3 floors bungalow (38 units)

Metro Jelata project is in construction state whereby it is nearly done. According to the procedure, a series of inspection have to be done before certificate of occupancy is granted. A certificate of occupancy (O.C) is a document issued by a local government agency or building department certifying a building's compliance with applicable building codes and other laws, and indicating it to be in a condition suitable for occupancy. On the second week, Ms Shakinah, Ms Aida, and me had pay a visit to the site for inspection. We have delegate the work among ourselves to check for the deflection occurred in the building. For example, cracks on the wall, windows that cannot be opened,

or even an uneven paint on the wall. These problems have to be noted down and take photos for evidence. After that, we have to compile these information into a report.

4.4 JALAN ROHZAN Site Location

: Jalan Rohzan, Mukim 14, Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang

: 1 shop office

Jalan Rohzan shop office is in planning submission state. I was tasked to produce plan, section and elevations of the building based on the sketchup 3D model done by Ar.Anthony.

4.0 After that, I was tasked to handle the PKM submission of the layout plan. It is a great opportunity for me to understand the detail requirements of submission. First, key plan and location plan have to be insert in an A1 size paper with proper title block. After that, building plan with proper hatching and dimension labeled have to be done. Using the survey plan from surveyor ( Jurukur Mas ), building plan have to be insert to form the layout plan. Ms Tan had guided me throughout this project, where I have learned to read a survey plan. For example, checking the final discharge of water, the floor level, the adjoining lot and also drainage. I also get a chance to understand the requirement of MPSP for example the

number of carpark and plot ratio.

4.0 After layout plan was done, CD submission for endorsement was required. The layout plan was overlaid on the original survey plan which is following coordinates. The CD submission for endorsement was return back for the first time, where my layout plan was not tally with the coordinates of surveyor. With the consultation of my peers, the CD was successfully approved at the second time of submission. Whereas the CD submission if just the lead off of the procedure. After that, based on the size of the building, plan fee have to be calculated according to UBBL. For commercial building, a plan fee of RM4.00 have to be paid to every 9.29m2 of building area. Besides, I was tasked to produce a list based on the adjoining lot owner (Nama Tuan Punya Tanah – Tanah bersempadan). I really appreciate this opportunity that provide me to have a better understanding on the documents to be prepared for planning submission.

4.5 PASAR AWAM Specification

: Market

According to MPSP, for every 1000 unit of housing built, a market should be provided. For this project, I was involved in doing a rough plan of Pasaw Awam (wet market). Referred to “ Garis Panduan Perancangan Kawasan Perdagangan� , 75 stalls have to be provided

including 10 food stalls, 11 grocery store and 54 fish/meat/vegetable stalls. The size of the stalls and the numbers of carpark to be provide are stated in the guideline too.

During my last week of internship, I was given the last task which is the post production of terrace house and shop office. After amending some minor parts of 3D model which previously built by Ms Looi, I rendered the image using Sketchup Vray and did the post production using Photoshop.

5.0

CONCLUSION In this short period of two months, I have learned a lot of things which could

not be learn from school. It has given me a great understanding of how this industry work and a clearer image on the way I am heading towards. It also exposed me to the working environment and culture of this industry. Working with this amazing team will be a great memory pieces that I would never forget.
