DANIEL BENJAMIN GALLERY COME UNDONE

Daniel Benjamin Gallery is a contemporary art gallery based in Notting Hill. Founded in 2018, the gallery suppo1rts and exhibits selected living contemporary artists working with different mediums. During KCAW19, Daniel Benjamin Gallery presents C O ME U ND O NE, the first solo exhibition by Ellie MacGarry. Through her paintings and ceramics, she foregrounds fleeting and intimate moments involving the body and its everyday transformations. MacGarry’s work considers the self-conscious body; the inside and out, the clothing and unclothing, the desperate desire to be seen and the even more desperate desire to be hidden.

From the sexy theatre of assertive undressing to the humour and embarrassment of failing coverings, the intimacy of the everyday is put at centre-stage. There is a focus on the ever-changing parts of us; our clothes, which we keenly renew for the sake of reinvention or desire, and our hair and nails which endlessly shed and renew themselves. Often at a point of transition – half-unbuttoned, mid-haircut with the snipped hairs clumping on the shoulders, the bed as yet unmade or food which is yet to be eaten – there is a sense of privacy which has been broken down. Invites are issued; the viewer is urged to look in and come closer.

AMANDA PARER STUDIO LOST

As part of its Public Art Trail and annual Sloane Sq commission, KCAW19 presents the world–premier of LO S T by Amanda Parer Studio. The monumental flowers and flora featured in this work are extinct and endangered species from the seven continents of the world. They are delicately coloured, illuminated and vibrant, highlighting the beauty and wonder that has or will be lost. Living in the 21st century demands living lives where most of our social experience and values arrive to us digitally at break-neck speed.

The giants of Parer Studio’s creations stand enlarged, stimulating imaginations while offering scope for reflection about our state with the natural world. “Lost creates a space where people are immersed in nature’s beautiful forms – a place distinctly other that allows people young and old to stop, reflect upon the artwork through play.” – Amanda Parer. The installation is supported by Cadogan.

Inspired by the dramatic Tasmanian landscape, Parer’s artwork aims to explore the natural world, its fragility and the role of humanity within it. When the audience visits one of these ephemeral art installations they are enticed by the play of scale, light, dark, drama, and humour.

RICHARD WOODS HOLIDAY HOME (WHITE CITY)

H O LIDAY H O ME ( W HI T E CI T Y ) is part of a series of house-shaped identical sculptures called H O LIDAY H O MES. They are called holiday homes because they are always temporally installed. Each sculpture is exactly the same size, but they are also all different colours. The idea behind the series is to locate the identical houses in very different locations – the idea being that each location is affected in a different way by the introduction of the house sculpture. “I‘m very enthusiastic about showing the house in White City Place as the scale and contemporary feel of the office buildings around it will make the small house appear even smaller and more traditional in style. I hope in the years to come to take the H O LIDAY H O ME series on a travel around the world, allowing the sculptures to temporally sit in deserts and jungles, dense urban streets and quiet country lanes, interior and exterior spaces. I feel the more locations it can sit within, the more profound the artwork can become.” – Richard Woods

H O L IDAY H O ME ( W HI T E CI T Y ) is presented with the generous support of Stanhope Plc. Stanhope Plc are an award-winning developer, who have been responsible for some of the UK’s most revered developments, including Television Centre, Chiswick Park and Broadgate in the City of London. Purchasing White City Place from the BBC in 2015 in partnership with Japanese property developer Mitsui Fusodan and Canadian Pension fund AIMCo, the site has been transformed into a mix of commercial office space, restaurants, bars and a 2000 seat theatre.
