WELCOME

Welcome to the 7th edition of Art Week!

We are delighted to celebrate our return with an extraordinary programme of events, hosted by artists and unique venues in our vibrant corner of London. Our nominated ambassadors have crafted special trails for each zone, reflecting key themes and local flavours that promise unexpected discoveries: feast your eyes on the Portobello Food and Art Trail or delve into the rich history of Frestonia, once an independent republic, now transformed into a bustling arts quarter, where you can spot the likes of Anthony Gormley and Jeff Koons exhibited.

This year’s theme is CHANGING LANDSCAPES and marks our biggest art trail to date! With over 20 sculptures and collaboration with additional partners such as Serpentine and artists Gillie and Marc who have introduced a child-friendly trail called KIDS GO WILD dispersed across Knightsbridge and the King’s Road. Find them all!

The KCAW Poetry Corner, expertly guided by Kamitan Arts CIC, along with the KCAW x Chelsea Windows curated by Jack Trodd, continue to champion emerging creative talent. Look out for their work displayed in windows throughout the area, and follow self-guided trails using the Go Jauntly or Bloomberg Connects apps. For a more active experience, join a borough-wide, self-guided cycle tour of the art trail.

Hop on the Art Bus with Piers Thomson of Portobello Radio - your guide on this free, five-hour ride along the Art Trail, supported by The Muse Gallery. Mark your calendars for 30 June, starting in Portobello and finishing at the Serpentine Pavilion.

We are proud that Youth Action Alliance is our Charity Partner this year and will host a special event at Westway Sports Centre on 22 June. Check out the Open Artist Studios at Empress Place during the first weekend of Art Week, and on Friday 21 June explore the Art Market in Chelsea. Thanks to our partnership with Morley College, students have designed our volunteer T-shirts. We are also grateful for the support from the Kensington & Chelsea Council and the team there!

KCAW’s journey began with a public consultation and the dedication of a group of volunteering arts industry professionals. Since 2018, our Advisory Board has contributed their knowledge, effort, and care for the local community, ensuring that KCAW thrives year after year. Remember, our festival is not-for-profit, and we owe our success to the unwavering support of our Ambassadors, the Public Art Trail Committee, our dedicated KCAW team, Advisory Board members, and all participating artists and creators, venues, retailers and sponsors.

We look forward to welcoming you!

CURATORIAL THEME: CHANGING LANDSCAPES

Every year, our Advisory Board selects a theme for the festival that reflects the current climate. For the 7th edition, they’ve chosen the vibrant colour purple as our themed hue, emphasising that the programming is curated and created by our creative community. Stepping away from our usual four colours, we have introduced a new shade of purple to our branding!

Our programming aligns with our overarching theme: Changing Landscapes, where our participants were encouraged to consider geographical and digital landscapes, natural habitats, and the human response to the world - leveraging the power of AI.

KCAW X CHELSEA WINDOWS

For the 5th year, KCAW is collaborating with Sloane Stanley to create an exhibition curated by Jack Trodd that spans selected shop front windows along the iconic King’s Road. Participating stores, restaurants and cafes will display ground-breaking artworks by London’s most exciting emerging artists throughout Art Week and beyond.

For this year’s edition, the CHANGING LANDSCAPES theme is reflected in these ’ones-to-watch’ artists’ unique styles, changing perceptions on what’s possible, utilising classical art movements and methods in totally new ways, whilst spotlighting the positively changing commercial landscape that is seeing more businesses championing young artists. As seen in this project, retail spaces become pop-up contemporary art galleries, artists have the chance to reach new audiences and show their work in unique locations, whilst the public is invited to discover up-and- coming artists and enjoy the High Street enriched with creativity.

YOUTH ACTION ALLIANCE

OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNER

Youth Action Alliance Partnership working with Kensington + Chelsea Art Week 2024

Youth Action Alliance (YAA) is delighted to be selected as the chosen charity of Kensington + Chelsea Art Week (KCAW) and looks forward to supporting KCAW to shine a spotlight on the unique cultural variety across a multitude of events and spaces.

On Saturday, 22 June, YAA will host a free daytime event titled ‘ONE HEART FESTIVAL’ filled with free fun for all the family held also to pay tribute to Grenfell, bringing everyone together under “one community”. This annual local festival aims to uplift and unite everyone in the community, welcoming people of all ages for a fun and free family day and to pay tribute to Grenfell, bringing everyone together under “One Community”.

The ‘One Heart Festival’ (formerly known as the North Kensington Youth & Community Festival) was set up in 2017 following the tragic loss of two of YAA’s young members in the Grenfell fire. What started out as a youth festival has evolved into a special community event. Through this event the YAA is able to provide a platform for young people to showcase their talents in music and sports as well as engaging them in positive activities.

Tania Moore, CEO of YAA, said “Our team is excited to be supporting KCAW and facilitating public engagement in the local culture. Through collaborating with leading organisations in the area, we aim to broaden our network and expand our partnership landscape whilst raising awareness of our services and the support available for children and young people in the local community. We hope this will create opportunities for us to diversify our funding sources and remain a sustainable charity in K&C”.

Join the One Heart Festival and support the vital work of YAA here: www.youthactionalliance.org/oneheart

Design and sustainability pioneers Marie Cudennec Carlisle and Oliver WaddingtonBall opened the doors to Goldfinger at the foot of Trellick Tower in 2013.

The North Kensington wood and joinery workshop is the lifeblood of the enterprise. Here, bespoke furniture and homeware is designed and crafted for residential homes and many London businesses; from hotels to cafés, shops to offices.

The Goldfinger Academy teaches marginalised young people the art of woodworking through an apprenticeship programme, so they can progress into meaningful work. Public craft workshops are also offered - with free spaces offered to local residents on low income.

Graffik Gallery has a reputation for being the capital’s prime street art destination. The gallery has carved a master status in the movements of the urban art genre. You can view works by Banksy, Stik, Alec Monopoly, Bambi, Invader, KAWS and many up and coming stars of the future

Graffik Gallery does not cater purely for art collectors but opens up its doors to the whole art buying community whatever your budget.  The now infamous on site graffiti workshop events have been running for nearly a decade.  The workshops submerge the guests in this amazing urban, street, skate, and spray culture.

“Poetry 4 Grenfell - Voices from da Grove and Latimer” is a tribute to all affected by the fire, is the product of on-going workshops that Kamitan Arts had been running as a response to the tragedy. A self-published book, “Poetry 4 Grenfell” includes the voices of local residents, the bereaved, a victim and the empathetic wider community, from the ages of 3 – 77. Using creative means to amplify the voices of our traumatised community that have been manipulated or misrepresented by the media. “Poetry 4 Grenfell” witnesses the inscribed written words and images; immortalising our memories through the written and oral testimonies, for indeed these dear souls will never be forgotten.

TRIBAL GATHERING LONDON

One of London’s best-kept secrets, the gallery has been operating in Notting Hill for more than 25 years: formerly in Westbourne Grove and for the past two years happily part of the Ladbroke Grove landscape. Inside the gallery on display is a personally curated and revolving collection of authentic African traditional art that reflects a deep understanding and appreciation by its owner.

The upcoming online and physical exhibition, titled ‘Fibre and Ore’ (12 June-14 July 2024) will exhibit a curated selection of pieces of prestige and adornment in fibre and metal from across the African continent.

The Khalsa Jatha Gurdwara is the oldest Sikh Temple in Europe. Sculptor Gervase Clifton-Bligh of G23LAB has been invited to site his abstract light sculpture at the temple.

‘The Everyperson’ is a light sculpture based on the Golden Ratio, which is a number found throughout nature and which was incorporated by Da Vinci into his famous drawing of the Vitruvian Man. The ratio is irrational, it can never be completely accurately expressed, so it represents both life and its constant evolution.

‘The Everyperson’ is on a pilgrimage to places of worship belonging to each of the world’s major religions. Visit the oldest Sikh Gurdwara in Europe, and, as in mediaeval times, collect a token (stamped by the artist) to confirm your visit and a chance to come together amidst the turmoil of shifting political and religious landscapes that cascade around us.

On 28 June ‘The Everyperson’ will join forces with the Gurdwara’s traditional Indian musicians and local poets to create a live evening of light, sound and chai.

Street Art Market - Portobello Wall (2024 – 2025)

This project aims to showcase local artistic talent across London’s iconic streets. Bringing together the themes of Community, Art, and Ecology, we support improvements to local areas by creating public art exhibitions which celebrate pride of place.

This exhibition features 15 local artists’ original works. Artists have created site specific works in 2D mediums, including photography, water-based aerosols, and other acrylic mediums. The work is shown on 8x4ft sustainable boards which have been made from upcycled waste.

The exhibition creates a visual link between two vibrant and celebrated market areas, Portobello Market and Golborne Market. The project seeks to nurture the legacy of street artists in the area and develop new and existing artist’s creative careers.

We hope this project brings joy and satisfaction to local residents who continue to feel pride in keeping a clean and respected street.

NOTTING DALE CAMPUS ART AT NOTTING DALE CAMPUS

A truly original space created for extraordinary people, Notting Dale Campus is set around the RIBA award winning open space of Breakers Place. An unrivalled and striking contemporary art collection by world famous artists weaves through the campus.

The collection spans a wide range of eras, media and styles, from Jeff Koon’s ‘Baroque Egg with Bow’ which sits proudly in The Yellow Building atrium alongside work by David Hockey, to Damian Hirst’s famous ‘spot painting’ in The George Building and specially commissioned sculpture by Philip King, ‘Tra La La’.

The campus’ latest pieces include a sculpture by Antony Gormey, entitled ‘Root’ and artworks of giant proportions by Bridget Riley, Ragna Bley and Lucia Laguna.

Frestons Café is also open Monday to Friday (8am-4pm) serving a wide selection of hot and cold food options together with drinks and with inside and outside seating.

BEAKERS PLACE SCULPTURE IN NOTTING DALE

Located within Breakers Place, Antony Gormley’s ‘Root’ sits alongside art from Philip King and Alexandre da Cunha, contrasting the former’s rich, iron tones and contorted shape with pastel colours and curving shapes.

Brazilian born, London-based artist Alexandre da Cunha creates sculptures and paintings that play with and distort the concept of the ‘readymade’, inviting us to reconsider our surroundings and the objects we think of as familiar. His interest also lies in the notion of monumentality, the relationship between public and gallery-based sculpture and the transformation of found materials. This specially commissioned permanent work at the Notting Dale Campus, allowed da Cunha to not only continue these investigations but gave the artist an opportunity to explore them within a public context for the first time. ‘MIX’ takes the form of a reclaimed concrete mixer drum placed on top of a distinctive concrete plinth - its point of departure stems from the materiality of the site itself and the newly constructed buildings which use concrete as a primary material.

The ‘Angel of the North’ sculptor, Antony Gormley is famed for use of iron, with ‘Roots’ proving no exception; this cast iron piece weaves a poignant vision of the human condition: eternally suspended between order and chaos,

nature and structure. The art was acquired for Notting Dale with the proceeds from the sale being donated by Gormley and White Cube Gallery to raise funds for the ‘Artists for Client Earth’ initiative. This is an unsurprising move from Gormley, who has long been an advocate for action against climate change, with a number of his previous pieces exploring the issue. Simultaneously resembling tree roots, an aerial and an inverted human form, ‘Root’ vividly evokes Client Earth’s central theme: namely, the interaction between the natural and man-made worlds.

In August 2021, Phillip King’s ‘Tra La La’ sculpture joined Breakers Place. The piece proved to be a perfect addition to the area, with its light form and pastel colours generating a summerfeel enjoyed by occupiers from across the courtyard from Frestons Cafe. Originally created in 1963, this piece was reconfigured and upscaled for this outdoor display. ‘Tra La La’ is not only placed at the heart of the Notting Dale Campus but has proven to mimic the importance of one too. It has generated huge amounts of calm and joy in equal measure for those visiting Notting Dale and Frestonia.

The Electric Cinema has been, and always will be, a resolute and popular part of the very fabric of Portobello Road. It has survived two world wars, a bombing, and a major fire; it garnered worldwide recognition for the phenomenal programming in the 70s; and it was saved from being turned into a Bingo Hall in the 1980s thanks to an outpouring of local support. It celebrated its centenary in 2011, and in 2018 saw the 50th anniversary of the Electric Cinema Clubthe guise in which it made its name as a bastion of arthouse cinema.

J/M GALLERY CHANGING TIDES

‘Changing Tides’ is a solo show of work by multi-disciplinary artist Simone Brewster, curated by James Marshall.

The show, situated in Portobello Road’s J/M Gallery, will coincide with a display in Knightsbridge of Brewster’s large scale public sculpture project, Spirit of Place, as a key headline display in the acclaimed KCAW Art Trail.

Changing Tides, follows on from Brewsters 2023 showstopping year as the Special Commision winning artist for London Design Festival, and the Now Gallery summer exhibition solo artist.

The title “Changing Tides” captures this specific moment in Brewster’s practice, when her sculptural and three dimensional work opens a dialogue with her painting.

Both the artist and the curator are known for their multi-disciplined approach. Rather than be known as separate specialisms, the artist sees each discipline as a tool to build a larger narrative. Each creative mode informs the other to produce something greater than the individual facet. In Changing Tides, this takes a literal sense within the exhibition, with a constantly changing display.

Brewster’s work often offers a playfulness to viewers, inviting them to reflect on themes and associations we often attribute to simple shape and colour. Pulling you into the canvas she leads you to question if these forms connote concepts such as gender, race, or body image? Through this exhibition, attendees are invited to reflect on their inner landscapes and the shapes that echo our cherished memories, evoke our childhood, mirror our natural environment, or resonate with our intimate relationships.

Her paintings, far from the constraints of conventional representations, encourage viewers to delve into the familiar yet often unnamed organic shapes that exist beyond definition. Rejecting the idea of using ‘named’ shapes, Brewster underlines the profound familiarity that comes with experiencing these forms, as well as the emotional sentiment, value, and comfort they hold.

ROOF OF CORONET THEATRE THE SPIRIT OF PAINTING - GAVIN TURK

Mysteriously landing on the cupola of The Coronet Theatre during the quiet of a global pandemic, a lonely figure poses in the adlocutio stance of an Emperor in ancient Rome addressing his troops. Contra to this heroic posture, this figure portrays the artist in his studio overalls painting the sky with a paintbrush instead of a sword, palette as shield. Originally designed to have a sculpture of Mercury on the roof of the theatre, now the messenger God of commerce has become a prophetic painter of our current hubris.

‘I imagine being in the sky, I thought of an oversized paint splattered stepladder on the roof, to help a giant decorator to paint the clouds or change the earth’s light bulb (sun).’ Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk uses art historical referencing as a material to question art itself. This figure takes its form from Alfred Drury’s sculpture of Sir Joshua Reynolds, a familiar iconic statue grand-standing in the courtyard of the Royal Academy. Where the Drury sculpture portrays the first president of the RA as a member of the establishment, this contemporary classic presents the artist as artisanal workman. At this time of fierce debate around public sculpture this portrait brings a new provocation to the conversation.

The Coronet Theatre presents an eclectic programme of theatre, film, dance, music, poetry and visual art in its intimate 195-seat main auditorium and 90-seat studio space, re-named The Print Room in recognition of the company’s previous home at a nearby print works.

A fusion of multi-disciplinary international and UK work, The Coronet Theatre stages a mix of new productions, commissions and visiting artists, including a number of UK and world premieres. We offer memorable and often unexpected experiences for our audiences, while supporting established artists and nurturing new talent.

RUBY ZOE HOTEL FACADE JUMBIE JUBILATION BY ZAK OVÉ

British-Trinidadian artist Zak Ové will be unveiling his first artwork in glass mosaic in the heart of Notting Hill on 21 June. Inspired by the traditions, flair and freedom of carnival and masquerade Jumbie Jubilation will celebrate the rich heritage of the area and Ové’s own links to the world-famous carnival. Zak’s childhood was rooted in the local scene, his father Sir Horace Ové, also an artist compelled to create, made his first feature film ‘Pressure’ based on Black life in Notting Hill in the 70s, an astute and important full length feature which captures the grimness of west London’s pre-gentrified Ladbroke Grove revealed in dreamlike, deep-focus, pinsharp detail.

Jumbie Jubilation is designed and drawn from Ové’s artist practice, combining elements from his abstract works, where he uses crocheted doilies to create colour fields, and that of his sculptures, primarily those that take influence from the carnival and mythology of Trinidad. Both elements embody and use vibrant sound clashes of colour, movement and shape which are fused together to create a celebratory procession across the panels.

“I have imagined the mosaic panels akin to apertures through which to glimpse and experience another time and place,” says Ové, “a liminal space of mesmerising colour, rhythm, and dance. These panels become portals through which the viewer peers into hyperspace

allowing them to enter, for a moment, the beating heart of Carnival itself.”

About Zak Ové

Zak Ové (b. 1966, London) is a British/ Caribbean artist with a multi-disciplinary practice across sculpture, film and photography. His work is informed through the history and lore carried through the African diaspora to the Caribbean, Britain and beyond with particular focus on traditions of masking and masquerade as a tool of self-emancipation.

Ové’s artworks explore the interplay between old world mythology and ‘potential futures’, a space where he reinterprets present existence into the fantastical. His work is a celebration of the power of play and the spirit of imagination in the blurring of edges between reality and possibility. In this way, Ové seeks to re-write a history for the future through heralding the past in a new light. Ové’s work features in a number of museum and private collections. He curated the acclaimed exhibition, GET UP STAND UP NOW: Generations of Black Creative Pioneers, London, 2019.

I gave you a hard rap, little one

But you were strong, you survived

You appeared painfully shy

Unable to speak, to stand or to show yourself

I suffered that part of you

But in reality, you were strong, in protection mode

You had built yourself a hard ‘carapace’

You were invincible

But broken inside

You withstood emotional abuse

Rejection and abandonment

Mockery and jeering, isolation and despair

You were, in fact, so strong

Little One

You, are the True Champion of me

You are my Hero

If not for you

I would have jumped out of the window

If not for you

I would have swallowed 60 pills

Life was painful, lonely

Full of despair

But you, Little One

You are my Hero!

Today you wear a magic cape

And carry the yew and crystal wand I chose for you

Just 2 days ago

And you made such astounding changes

My Little Hero

That, you are!

‘Be Bold’ you tell me!

And yet I am the big one

‘Tis your guidance, wisdom and actions

That saved me, that allowed me to grow

And become who I am

All thanks to your invisible inner strength

We no longer need to hide, Little One,

We can come out to play, now

In full sight

Of the world.

Pennies and pounds, ups and downs. There’s a few less smiles, and a lot more frowns. This is regardless if you’re living in an urban city or a surburban town.

As the Earth evolves, the polar ice caps dissolve. The landscape starts to form a brand new mould, stillrich with minerals, such as diamonds and gold.

The battle between social and cultural, has really caused a rift, the effect is like two tectonic plates that have had a major shift.

The world will keep evolving, regardless of technology and the apps that weare downloading.

The earth has mysteries that continue to be unfolding, and we all have responsibilities that we should be upholding.

42 ZONE 3 – KENSINGTON CHURCH ST

CHRIS ARNING - WHAT IS POETRY?

People ask me: what is poetry?

It’s like the music of words

It comes… when I’m musing on hurt

It speaks truth to power; it accuses the world

It’s much more than just nouns fusing with verbs

No…

Poetry is life - poetry is death

Poetry is strife - but poetry is never stress

It brings serenity - it’s found in the breath

Poetry is YOU singing The Song of Yourself

What are poems good for? Well, mending a heart

Poems are your destiny: they’re writ in the stars

Poetry is Walt Whitman & John Cooper Clarke

And William Shakespeare & Kendrick Lamaar

Poetry is what your feelings might be seeking

Poetry is you & your thoughts when they’re teeming

Poetry is guitars silently weeping

Poetry is Keats on the Heath - when he’s dreaming

Poetry is rhyme, the tempo, poetry’s the rhythm

It’s the flutter in your heart when you’re with him

Poems meditate on the sadness in your bones

And they see the gladness in your face when she phones

Poetry is like a gushing of emotion

Poetry ‘pours a balm on the world’ like a lotion

Poetry is magical - casts spells like a potion

Poems needs solitude - but poetry is social

THE DESIGN MUSEUM PLAZA XABANA BY MATTHIAS NEUMANN

‘Xabana’ is a site-responsive series of temporary sculptures created by Matthais Neumann that follows a distinct formal constructive language, using untreated commercial wood slats and colour fields. Built on site by the artist himself, using fully recyclable materials, the construction of the piece forms part of its performative element.

Visitors are invited to observe how the artist works during the installation. Matthias welcomes conversations with passers-by as he creates the piece. After exhibition the artworks is disassembled with parts donated for use again by someone else. ‘Xabana’ are inhabitable sculptural environments that act both as a colourful marker and as a negotiated spatial environment in various degrees of privacy in extension of the contiguous public space.

The work for the 7th Edition of KCAW Public Art Trail will be in continuation of this ongoing series of work, re-creating ‘Xabana (45°29’28”N 10°08’42”E)’ first commissioned for Capitale Italiana della Cultura - Bergamo Brescia 2023, and realised at a former military site, the Ex Polveriera, and acts as a marker overlooking the site, enclosing a void that itself is enveloped in layers of space.

Matthias Neumann is a multidisciplinary artist and architect based in Germany, the USA and in Greece. His work has

been presented internationally, including at venues such as Manifesta 8, Galeria HIT, National Museum of Contemporary Art Romania, SITE:Lab, the Queens Museum, Montalvo Art Center, and the Jule Collins Smith Museum, among others, in addition to a significant number of public art installations throughout the US and Europe.

His architectural work has been recognized through competitions, including his finalist design for the WTC Memorial, New York, his winning competition entry for the Africa Centre near Cape Town, South Africa, among others.

His work is firmly based in a spacial practice, with a particular focus on installations in the public sphere. A recurring interest is how space, material assembly and related processes allow for the experience of the spatial condition in relation to its place, and to bring into focus notions of material, cultural and spatial ecology embedded in the built environment.

JUBILEE SQUARE ‘SALVIA CORRUPTED’ BY JULIAN WILD

‘Salvia Corrupted’ by Julian Wild is a tall, self-supporting sculpture made from welded box section stainless steel. It is a man-made version of a natural structure that twists and turns chaotically upwards.

The sculpture was originally created in 2011 as ‘Salvia’. The work was based on the salvia plant as a site-specific installation for The Chelsea Physic Garden: Salvia, otherwise known as sage, has many species and many healing properties as well having a hallucinogenic strain.

‘Salvia Corrupted’ is a visual metaphor for changing landscapes through both the way it has been created over a 9-year period and for its dynamic form, colour and representation of positive regeneration and growth. It has references to both natural and technological sources. The artwork is intended to engage audiences with its dynamic form, bright colours and reflective forms.

Wild was awarded The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Arts Club Trust Studio Bursary from 2009-2012. He won an individual Arts Council Grant in 2011. In 2005 he was a finalist in the Jerwood Sculpture Prize and won the Millfield Sculpture Prize in the same year. His sculpture titled ‘Indeterminate System’ is permanently installed at Kensington Town Hall.

Julian Wild’s works allude to minimalist sculptures disrupted by interventions and gestures within their form. He often uses colour as an agent to exaggerate the contrast between interior and exterior or to give an object a presence in space. Many of his installations take the form of man-made versions of natural structures, with geometric forms appearing to grow up out of the ground

Wild has exhibited at venues including: Modern Art Oxford, Chatsworth House (Sotheby’s), Sculpture in the City, Canary Wharf, V22, William Benington Gallery and The Ann Norton Sculpture Garden in Florida. Commissions include: The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, The University of Oxford, Modern Forms, Cass Sculpture Foundation, Jerwood Sculpture Park, The Lightbox Gallery and many more.

Julian Wild is a fellow of The Royal Society of Sculptors and was Vicepresident from 2015-2019. He is Sculpture Leader and a Senior Lecturer at The Art Academy London. He lives and works in Sussex, UK.

THE DESIGN MUSEUM ENZO MARI

The Design Museum is delighted to showcase the first ever UK museum exhibition devoted to one of the most significant Italian designers of the 20th century, Enzo Mari, whose designs have inspired generations of creatives around the world. Mari has been described as ‘design’s conscience’, and his stance was one of activism, calling for a greater social responsibility in design, and access to knowledge.

Produced by Triennale Milano, the unmissable retrospective includes the full spectrum of Mari’s prolific output, from his work as a designer, but also as an artist, teacher, critic and theorist. In total, more than 300 objects are on display – most have not been seen in the UK before. Ranging from furniture to conceptual installation-based works, and from product design to graphics. Also on show are his children’s books and games, which were an important aspect of Mari’s output as in his vast creative field. The projects featured in the exhibition can collectively be considered the most representative works of the nearly 2,000 Mari created during his career.

Alongside the exhibition, the museum is showcasing a related free display featuring a number of commissioned pieces from contemporary designers in celebration of Enzo Mari’s pioneering ideas spanning disciplines such as art, graphics, product design and education.

Sometimes a designer’s work is so influential that it inspires generations and continues to resonate beyond their lifetime. Mari’s wide-ranging practice has been a reference point for many creatives and this display features a selection of London-based designers, studios and collectives whose work shares an affinity with Mari’s. They have connected with Mari’s interest in challenging production processes, his attention to the simplification of form, his engagement with toys and games, and his desire to democratise design.

The former home and studio of the leading Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896), from its first construction in the 1860s up until shortly before Leighton’s death, his studio-house on the edge of Holland Park was a constant preoccupation. Absorbing large amounts of his time, money and effort, the house combined spaces for living, working and entertaining and the display of Leighton’s collections. Regularly featured in the press, his home came to embody the idea of how a great artist should live.

Sambourne House is the family home of legendary illustrator Linley Sambourne (1844 – 1910). Sambourne adopted many principles of aesthetic design when decorating his home, painting stylised flowers onto the internal doors, using Morris & Co wallpapers and Japanese embossed wallpapers, and buying pieces of aesthetic movement furniture, including a painted and carved sideboard for the dining room. But the house also reflects his own unique taste, with a sheer density of objects that went against the more restrained aesthetic style.

THE NAPOLEON GARDEN ANANAS BY ANNIE TREVORAH

‘ANANAS’, a striking 3-meter upsidedown pineapple sculpture, comprises six stainless steel pineapple halves radiating from a central hexagonal column. The sculpture’s intricate lasercut lattice design allows visitors to appreciate the scenery through negative spaces, while the colours shift from gold to green in the upper fruit section an the leaves are coated in a rich blue.

The pineapple fruit made its debut in the UK in 1668 and became synonymous with lavish dining tables during the Georgian era. However, its cultivation was challenging and costly and thus the pineapple because an object of pride and envy on the lavish colonial dining tables. Despite its association with colonialism and slavery, today, the pineapple has evolved to symbolise hospitality, friendship and openness. The artist turned it upside down as a reflection on its past and as a form of a revolution.

Annie Trevorah’s multi-disciplinary practice takes a panoptic and cinematic approach, embracing sculpture, textiles, photography, print, video and sound. Based locally, she holds a MA from the Royal College of Art and was commissioned by Wandsworth Council to produce a public sculpture in Battersea Park, replacing Barbara Hepworth’s ‘Single Form’ whilst on loan. She was also awarded the Chianciano Biennale 2022 Prize for Photography and

Reflecting on socio dynamic interplay between humans and non-humans, her work communicates connectivity, entanglement and mutation and is grounded with concerns around society, justice and political comment. An emphasis on metamorphosis provokes a playful approach to her making as she re-imagines future worlds and new mythologies, while her interest in human–plant interconnectivity leads her to weave and merge linked evolutionary and reproductive processes into her work.

Trevorah uses an array of materials and vivid colours, regularly drawing on the ecosystem to provide living sculptures. Strong bodily references expose connections between various manifestations of freedom and containment, control, tension and incongruity and her work often reveals fluidity within structure.

This year she has been selected for the coveted Arte Laguna prize exhibition at Arsenal Nord, Venice and secured another commission from Fulham Palace, supported by Arts Council England.

CLOSING THE GREEN GAP - ‘THE SMALLEST EVER RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW GARDEN.‚ BY GROW TO KNOW

Grow to Know, the not-for-profit born through guerrilla gardening in the moments following the Grenfell Tower fire, brought its activism to Chelsea Flower Show in 2023 by exhibiting the ‘smallest ever Chelsea Flower Show garden ’ - Closing the Green Gap

Closing the Green Gap tackles the growing divide and disparity in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, intended to highlight the reality of nature access beyond the gates of RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Positioned in the UK’s most affluent borough, North Kensington is one of the most impacted communities by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the cost of living crisis, the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, and many other socio-environmental injustices.

In what is a relatively small borough (143,900 residents), the wealth and outcomes gap continues to widen, while poverty and deprivation, and their impact, continue to deepen. This is most emphasised by the average life expectancy difference within the

borough—nearly a 20 year difference, as reported most recently by K+C Foundation: Poverty and Prosperity in K+C: A Deepening Divide.

Grow to Know are changemakers aiming to cultivate creative, cultural and community nature access and action to inspire change.

“Building the smallest ever Chelsea Flower Show garden to highlight inequality and lack of access to nature was to make a statement in the world renowned and high profile RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It’s important that bridges are built to support the most in need and we’re on a mission to close that gap to ensure that everyone has access to beautiful, healing, good quality, safe space.” - Tayshan Hayden-Smith, Founder and Creative Director of Grow to Know.

19 EXHIBITION ROAD STELE BY GUS FARNES

‘Stele’ created with the use of latest 3D printing technology, is a figurative sculpture of inspired by 3D scans of standing stones from ancient sites. The artist, using 3D modelling software, composed the sculpture by manipulating each scan, scaling them and moving into position to replicate an stone figure of 244cm in height rendered with jesmonite and sand, reminiscent of the ‘Stone Henge’.

“Whilst creating the piece I was thinking about how the activities of the ancestors have influenced the way we live today and journeys of the people and the stones they quarried.”

Gus Farnes is a British artist working within a contemplative domain, fomented by human activity and the social milieu. Led by interests in history, the natural world and identity Farnes sculpts using materials sampled from his local situation – remnants from a landscape, prehistoric monuments, organic matter and found objects are collaged using digital and analogue processes giving rise to figurative forms.

Gus Farnes has shown work publicly participating in solo and group shows nationally, most notably with Sotheby’s, OHSH Central and Thompson’s Gallery in London. Farnes’ sculptures have been acquired for private collections throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States.

THE EXHIBITIONIST HOTEL

MY FAVOURITE CITY

The Exhibitionist Hotel is a constantly evolving artwork. The hotel curator, Vestalia Chilton, has worked on a range of projects to bring colour and adventure to the walls of the Art Corridors, the Bar and Reception galleries downstairs, and a total takeover of the sister hotel, The Gainsborough, opposite the road by artist Sasha Bowles inspired by the age of Enlightenment and the collections of the museums next door such as the Natural History Museum and the V&A.

This exhibition by Michael Wallner celebrates the beauty of London through the shapes, outlines and colours that define its character. London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Paris, Singapore, Miami, and Dubai all feature in this show. .

Before becoming a full-time artist Michael spent more than twenty years in the television industry working on entertainment programs, talk shows, documentaries, animations and a children’s novel. He even had a job writing poetry about pirates.

But creating original and innovative art was always his true passion and one of his favourite things about being an artist is experimenting.

“I love the challenge of finding a different way of presenting the world around me, whether it’s the quest to find the extraordinary views, strange angles and fantastic shapes, or the search for the most unusual materials to work with.”

Alongside the exhibition, the Exhibitionist Hotel will host Aishwarya Gupta’s new book ‘The World Through My Eyes’ launch event on 25 June.

STRIP-TOWER BY GERHARD RICHTER

A new large-scale public work at Serpentine South by Gerhard Richter, STRIP-TOWER (2023) expands on the artist’s six–decade exploration of painting, photography, digital reproduction and abstraction.

Richter began developing his series of ‘Strip Paintings’ in 2010, inspired by an earlier ‘squeegee painting’ titled ‘Abstract Painting 724-4’ (1990). This painting was then photographed, scanned, digitally manipulated, and divided into two strips, then four, eight, sixteen and thirty-two. The vertical strips of the painting were stretched across horizontally and laminated onto aluminium and covered with Perspex. ‘STRIP-TOWER’ employs a similar method, in which colourful striped ceramic tiles form a dense composition covering two perpendicular panels. The intersecting panels create a cross section that visitors can stand within.

Gerhard Richter’s artist book ‘Pattern’ was the first manifestation of this fractal method. The book shows Richter’s experiment of taking an image of his ‘Abstract Painting [CR: 724-4]’ and dividing it vertically up to 4096 strips. This methodology led to 8190 thinner strips which are then mirrored and repeated. The outcome is 221 patterns which are published on 246 double page images. ‘Pattern’ is one of many outstanding artist books Richter has

produced over the last couple of years.

‘STRIP-TOWER’ builds on Richter’s ongoing interest in the idea of reflections, its glossy tiles subtly mirroring the viewer and the surroundings of the Royal Parks. This new commission is the latest in a longstanding series of significant public presentations in the Royal Parks since Serpentine’s foundation in 1970.

In his multi-layered oeuvre, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932 in Dresden) deals with fundamental questions of painting. Among the numerous honours he has received in his career are the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice Biennale and the Praemium Imperiale Prize, Tokyo, both awarded in 1997. In 2006 the Gerhard Richter Archive at the Dresden State Art Collections was founded. Richter’s many solo exhibitions have included Tate, London, (1991, 2011); Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (1986, 2012); MoMA, New York, (2002); The Met Breuer, New York (2020); The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (2022) among many other institutions. He lives and works in Cologne.

This new large-scale work by one of the most significant artists living today is the latest in a long-standing series of significant public presentations by the Serpentine Gallery in The Royal Parks since Serpentine’s foundation in 1970.

Founded in April 2015, Old Brompton Gallery is a new fresh space in South West London, presenting exhibitions by established and emerging artists. Located in a modern space “Old Brompton” has established it’s own unique character.

The Gallery showcases artists of international standing, whilst also introducing and supporting artists at earlier stages in their career. With works in various media, from painting and photography to three-dimensional objects, the artists are encouraged to use the space creatively and take advantage of the large front window of the gallery with imaginative installations.

Brompton Cemetery is one of London’s famed ‘Magnificent Seven’ – a series of spectacular cemeteries that were created to ease overcrowding in Victorian London.

Nestled amidst the cemetery’s trees and wildflowers are over 35,000 gravestones and monuments.

Some of the period’s most eminent individuals were laid to rest here – from feminist icon Emmeline Pankhurst to pioneering doctor, John Snow.

YOUNG ARTISTS BY ALISON JACKSON + THE ART OF CHANGE BY LUCY OATES

See the free ‘YOUNG LOCAL ARTISTS’ portrait installation supported by Kensington & Chelsea Foundation and Rockspring Charitable Trust, in partnership with Young K&C located on Warwick Road, in situ with KCAW floor mural by artist Lucy Oates, painted last year and titled ‘The Art Of Change’.

One of the first things commuters will see when they emerge from the Warwick Road exit of Earl’s Court Underground Station is a vast display of portraits shot by youngsters who are part of YOUNG LOCAL ARTISTS, a photography programme founded and run by BAFTA and multi-award-winning artist Alison Jackson and supported by Kensington & Chelsea Foundation and Rockspring Charitable Trust, in partnership with Young K&C

The portraits captured during the programme culminate in a major public installation in partnership with The Earls Court Development Company. The installation is part of a wider programme of art at Earls Court, central to a vision to Bring the Wonder Back which will enliven the area as a destination and celebrate the creative talent of the local communities. Previous installations at this space include Baker and Borowski’s Pleasure Garden and Azarra Amoy’s Stars of Earl’s Court.

All the portraits were taken by young people aged 4-24 who are part of the YOUNG LOCAL ARTISTS programme and live in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Many of them had never held a camera before joining the initiative which inspires, educates, and provides mentorship and opportunities.

The Art of Change by Lucy Oates

In June 2023 as part of Kensington + Chelsea Art Week, West London mural artist and winner of the 2020 Chelsea Arts Club Trustee Award, Lucy Oates along with the local community painted a large multi-coloured floor mural on Warwick Road Apron. Lucy’s artwork was been inspired by a wish to transform ordinary spaces into a bright, playful area for people to spend time at and enjoy.

Gallery 286 is a private art gallery situated in a Victorian terraced house in Earl’s Court.

Having found the property in 1996 and realised its potential as a home/studio/ gallery, Jonathan Ross and his wife, the painter/sculptor Camilla Shivarg, spent a year and a half restoring what is one of the few remaining complete period houses on the road and creating somewhere they could live and work and hold exhibitions.

Initially the plan was to show Shivarg ‘s work and the holographic artists with whom Ross has been involved for many years but they soon broadened their remit to include work by a wide variety of artists we admire.

I am pluridisciplinary artist with a background in creative writing, based at Empress Studios (SW6)- working and living in the area since 1993. I use printmaking and specifically nature printing to interrogate the place we hold in this world of ours and how we are but a part of nature. In my practice I extend the idea of the matrix to surfaces either found or created , often printing in nature or from natural objects. This puts the process at the centre of my project and shows how everything, including humans, is a fragment of the natural world . I am also the founder of the EMPRESS SALON, a community building initiative to connect artists to new audiences and create opportunities to skillshare at a local level.

DUKE OF YORK SQUARE ON KING’S ROAD LOVE CONTINUUM BY YONI ALTER

‘Love Continuum’ is a larger-thanlife sculpture by artist Yoni Ater that celebrates the most important human emotion. Playful and interactive, the sculpture challenges visitors to explore an abstract squiggly line, that morphs into ‘Love’ when viewed from the right perspective.

‘Love Continuum’ is displayed at Duke of York Square, on the King’s Road, the one-time stomping ground of The Beatles with their anthem ‘All You Need Is Love’.

Alter is known for his colourful, out-ofthe-box ideas that add a sense of joy and play with scale. He has collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld, the NYC Marathon, Hermes and Tate, among many others. Guided by experimentation and semiotics, Alter passionately seeks new ways of creating visual representations, working across sculpture, painting, print, and digital media.

A self-confessed Chromatophilic (lover of colour), his designs and graphic works are full of optimism and brightness. Alter studied Art and Design before completing his MA in Graphic Design at the University of the Arts, London, and the city ceaselessly functions as a source of inspiration. His debut London show at Kemistry Gallery creatively abstracted London architecture and the surrounding urban landscape. Alter synthesises sharp silhouettes, bold colouring, and Pop Art iconography, reflecting the seductive creative vibe of London city.

TUTTI FRUTTI BY CHARLOTTE COLBERT

Monumental sculpture ‘Tutti Frutti’ by Charlotte Colbert draws inspiration from ‘Stoned Ape Theory’ that suggests our stone-age ancestors ate their way to higher consciousness by consuming mind-altering foods, thus leading to the development of language, imagination, the arts, philosophy, science, and all human cultural endeavours. Forming part of Colbert’s installation ‘Dreamland Sirens’ curated by Simon de Pury and UTA, ‘Tutti Frutti’ was shown during Frieze London and for KCAW will be hosted among the artisan and gourmet retailers and restaurants on picturesque Pavilion Road.

Charlotte Colbert is a multi-awardwinning filmmaker and multi-media artist who the Evening Standard dubbed “a natural born magician.” A creative force whose directorial feature film work was praised by the New York Times and won the Golden Leopard for Best First Picture, she has been described as “the lovechild of Salvador Dali and Emily Dickinson.”

“Colbert conjures fantastical worlds by blending the boundaries between reality and imagination,” writes the Design Museum.

and Eric

Her work has strong philosophical undertones and often questions narrative, time, identity, dreams and the unconscious. The surreal and fantastical become a way to look at our world afresh and find the space to question and reimagine.

“ We have in us the power of intuition, the power of connecting to the unseen, which can be very powerful. I think we are all mediums, and that artists are the ultimate mediums and Charlotte is definitely one.”

SLOANE SQUARE LIVING LONDON BY AMY JACKSON

‘Living London’, created by Amy Jackson is not only a beautiful public art sculpture. A living, breathing moss garden, crafted from sustainable materials, the living bio-filter will sequester carbon, absorb pollution, and enhance urban biodiversity. It will proudly sit on Sloane Square, framing the current green transformation of Sloane Street.

A lesson in living art; the whole process of its creation and life cycle is life-enhancing – with community engagement (‘moss-growing community-workshops’ - driving engagement and appreciation for art’s role in sustainability) the installation will be accompanied by a series of workshops for children in the local area, invited to be part of the build and maintenance of the piece.

Inspired by sacred geometry, ‘Living London’s’ circular form represents the divine unity of everything in our universe. Imparting a deeper appreciation for our interconnectedness with the planet and showcasing the power of art to create positive change. Visitors are reminded to pause, reflect and breathe amidst the bustle of city life.

Jacqueline Amy Jackson is known for her darkly humorous works, which tread lightly and consciously on the planet despite their sharply critical social and

environmental undertones. Jackson is commonly considered a conceptual artist traversing a myriad of mediums to explore tragedies of the human condition in the hyper-capitalist era.

She reveals unseen truths and camouflages hidden messages into her minimalist and meticulous acts and objects. Her most notable work Cleaning Squares, referencing mental health and the state of the environment, has seen thousands of ephemeral squares appear around the world since 2005. Other works engage with topics such as climate change, consumerism and social inequality, often imagining and bringing to life future dystopias.

“All art is political and most artists want to change something in the world… to spur action,” Jackson once commented, a statement that reflects her vision of using art as a tool to inspire change.

Jackson was previously a Board member of Waterlow Residents and is a charity Trustee. She is an ambassador of the Diversity Project, founded the Asset Owner Diversity Charter and in 2023 committed to giving away 50% of all profits made from her art in life and in death.

A limited series of 30 miniature Living London’s will also be available for sale from June 2024.

DEBBIE GOLT - MEETING OF THE CONTINENTS

Rivers flow from the highest points to the sea

Waters start from their own distinctive taste

Meandering through settlements, hamlets, places of people

Gushing through ravines, plateaux, places of plants, places of animals

Each gathering their own stories, experiences, pictures, special to themselves

Minerals in their natural unsmelted forms

Fishes going their own way to live their lifespan or be caught and eaten

By wildlife or humans, wild in their own way, harnessing it all

Watersvital to our continuity be we bird, beast, fish,or human

Flowing through survival of pollution

Flowing through reservoirs of life

Creating energy electrically, technologically

Going to their destination deeper depths

Unified from North, East, South and West

Turned into one from heat, from cold, to common ground

Oceans of transit that

We have to cross to meet, encounter, expand

Wars have been fought above, below and on the seas

Lives have been lost in and on and below the seas

Pleasures have been found on journeys across the seas, above the seas

As we follow our destinies

Fela Kutisang ‘Water no got enemy...’We are 70% water

We all have blood Which tells its truth of health

Which tells nothing of where we live,or our allegiances

It’s important to have clarity, to know where we come from

It’s vital to find common ground and shared territories

It’s not necessary to confront and conflict overthese factors

We can learn from the rivers and follow our own directions

Gathering strength and form

With a shared destination

HOOPER’S COURT SPIRIT OF PLACE BY SIMONE BREWSTER

Simone Brewster’s ‘Spirit of Place’ in collaboration with Amorim, and commissioned by London Design Festival, is an installation of five large scale sculptural vessels made of versatile and sustainable material: cork.

This family of objects, ranging up to 2.5m, represents Amorim’s cork forest at Herdade de Rio Frio, Portugal. As we face the climate crisis, cork is one of the most versatile materials we have available. The future of the cork oak forest will be secured by four key traits: upright expression, drought resistance, regenerative growth and biodiversity conservation. These four characteristics act as the foundation for the visual language of the piece, with Brewster translating each factor into a visual equivalent that can then be experienced and enjoyed in the centre of London.

Simone Brewster is an artist, designer, educator & cultural change-maker. Strongly grounded in craft, Simone uses her creative outputs as her voice, celebrating and sharing windows into varied Black female narratives and histories.

Based in London; the threads that flow throughout her work display a balance of function with beauty, a repurposing of the “ethnic” and the “western” and a continuous playing with scale, materiality and architectural form.

The creation of ‘Spirit of Place’ was made possible thanks to the material of cork and the support from Amorim - a sustainable family-run farm in Portugal growing and processing, protecting the cork forest. With special thanks to the engineering consultancy services of Arup. ‘Spirit of Place’ was initially exhibited at London Design Festival in 2023.

In Kensal House, where dreams take flight, A tale of joy and endless light, With golden sunbeams, morning bright, Awakening hopes, a vibrant sight.

Dusty curtains, they part with grace, Revealing beams of sunlight’s embrace, Energies stirring, eager to chase, Adventures waiting in this sacred space.

Mozart’s melodies, sweet and clear, Resound through rooms, eliminating fear, Preparing hearts for a day so dear, Where dreams and aspirations draw near.

Bounding forth, the playground awaits, Crunchy floor beneath, anticipation elevates, Swinging freely, defying earthly weights, Reaching for the sky, conquering the gates.

Now strolling slowly, streets wind around, Concrete challenges where strength is found, A scraped calf, blood dripping to the ground, Yet resilience prevails, a warrior unbound.

Returning home, blessed and content, Family gathered, love’s sweet scent, Drifting on clouds, memories invent, A tapestry of joy, never to relent.

Kensal House, a haven of dreams, Where SPID’s spirit forever gleams, In every heart, its essence streams, A poem of hope, in radiant beams.

SLOANE STREET THINKING BY EGOR ZIGURA

‘Thinking’ by the Ukrainian artist Egor Zegura explores the internal changing landscape of an individual’s existence, the evolution of personality and perception over time, and the boundary between their interior and exterior worlds.

One of a series of portraits from the series ‘Shift’, ‘Thinking’ is crafted in bronze (a material enabling a range of coloured patinas and oxides) masterfully harnessed to communicate the artist’s vision: one side is calm and poised (one’s exterior), the other undimmed, tumultuous, and pure (one’s inner thoughts and emotions). The works aim to demonstrate fracture in the mind, and the solution - to live in the present.

This poised sculptural form is complemented by the backdrop of elegant Yorkstone and planting on Sloane Street.

Born in Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine) in 1984, Egor Zigura currently lives and works in Kyiv and Nice. The artist creates sculptures, installations, and art objects. He graduated from Taras Shevchenko Art School in 2003, from the Department of Sculpture of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in 2009, and from the graduate program of the

National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in 2012. He taught sculpture and graphic art at the Karpenko-Kary Kyiv National University.

A member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine and L’Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques in Monaco. His sculptures combine canonical forms with contemporary notions, highlighting the issue of identity in the multicultural world, consumerism, ecological challenges, and other problems of the global society.

The artist works both with traditional and with contemporary materials. His arsenal includes bronze, metal, stainless steel and polyester. His works have won acclaim on the international level including global art fairs Spectrum Miami, Kölner Liste, Luxembourg Art Fair, Tokyo International Art Fair, Volta Basel and more.

Egor Zigura’s sculptures were acquired by numerous private and public collections in Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, France, Monaco, Portugal, the UK, Singapore, the USA, Japan, China and Italy. His sculptures are installed in public spaces in Ukraine, France, USA, Australia.

ACROSS KNIGHTSBRIDGE + KING‘S ROAD KIDS GO WILD BY GILLIE & MARC

Kensington and Chelsea Art Week is thrilled to welcome a brand new feature for 2024, our first family friendly trail entitled ‘Kids Go Wild’.

Brought to you by the Knightsbridge Partnership and King’s Road Partnership the free trail features astonishing bronze sculptures created by British and Australian artists, Gillie and Marc, dubbed ‘the most successful and prolific creators of public art in New York’s history’ by the New York Times.

Their highly coveted sculptures have animated over 250 cities across the world, and this summer their project ‘A Wild Life for Wildlife’ will roam the Brompton Road and King’s Road bringing joy and wonder to all ages, but importantly raise awareness for endangered animals, in partnership with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).

One of the greatest joys and sources of wonder comes from the most natural place, the wild. Animals, forests, lakes, and all the beautiful treats of planet earth are more exciting and healing than anything we have created. Yet the world is currently experiencing the 6th mass extinction.

More and more beautiful creatures are in trouble. The reasons can be linked back to us, humans. Thousands of the most important animals are facing imminent

extinction unless we act now. But with the same joy and love that we get from being in these magical places, we can also heal them.

Taking a seat on a tandem bike in Royal avenue, joining a game of chess or throwing a ball in a pool, encourages families to become a part of the journey with endangered animals. It allows them to learn and understand why each of these species is in trouble.

With QR codes connected with the sculpture, kids and adults will be transported to important information about the different animals’ lives, needs, and threats.

This creates an experience accessible to all, putting wildlife conservation at the centre of people’s cities and lives.

Wildlife conservation is no longer hidden in the outskirts of human society, it is right here in the urban jungle.

Very little known spot, called The King’s Road Curve is home to famous Vivienne Westwood Shop and next to it is a charming Garden Square set within the curve of the King’s Road. Here, the old Chelsea’s studio artists used to enjoy a weekly market. Just walk along the King’s Road from Sloane Square and past Chelsea Town Hall, you reach a cluster of galleries dotted along the curve. Our local ambassadors have organised a ‘Gallery Hop’ trail to welcome visitors to World’s End - named after an old tavern that has long since gone, while the clock outside Vivienne Westwood’s first boutique still turns back the time.

#SAVINGBUTTERFLIES

#savingbutterflies is a conservation project by WE RESTART Charity, intertwining art and environmentalism. It features an interactive workshop for children aged 8-15 at the World’s End Estate and Lots Road Big Local, delivered by CAUKIN Studio.

Young people engage in “Butterfly Conservation Educational,” creating a butterfly sculpture, designed by Aylal Heydarova, symbolising transformation and ecological balance.

#savingbutterflies extends through a vibrant social media campaign, inviting community engagement with educational content and challenges. The project, running until 30 June 2024, aims to inspire a future where art, education, and environmental stewardship coexist.

AISHWARYA GUPTA - REFUGE POEM

BANG! THUD! CRASH!

Booming bombs blast, the sounds scarring my ears, I crumple down like a ragged letter, my eyes welling up with tears. I know now - this is war. Peace will bless us nevermore.

I seize a bag, and run outside, The arms of my homeland wave goodbye, The borders of my homeland once stretched far and wide. Today, they are forced to hide

Gunshots pierce the air, Bodies , blood , cries , broken homes , tanks, guns – all this loss is too much to bear.

I dash and dodge around houses of my neighbours, looking for my family , sobbing in sadness, I scream and shout endless cries within - oh why this cruel catastrophe and madness.

But…I can’t stop this all, I watch helplessly as the homes we built with love and toil, now crumble and fall

My heart is pounding and thundering in my chest, I see dreams crushed with every strike. I am a victim, stalked by the hungry eyes of trauma Ready to bite and bury the people in the depths of …

I gaze pensively, like an intrepid agent. Was this what the world leaders really meant? They are fierce zephyrs ready to force me to relocate and shoot me back to the start.

Soulless villains, void of a heart.

I think of the time ahead

Where will I go?

Where will I find a home, a family, a life?

Where will I find refuge?

Where will I seek refuge?

Oh no !…

BANG! THUD! CRASH!

I was taught about love and peace

Of dreams and brotherhood

But now it’s bloodshed ,

For borders that we created in our heads

This land will remain, but we will be killed

The war will end but the trauma will never fade

So hear my cry, hear my plea

Merchants of massacre - I beg you to consider Is violence the only answer

God said love is the answer

So end this hate

Before it’s too late

You say no boat

But how do I stay afloat …

BANG! THUD! CRASH!
