WELCOME Welcome to the biggest edition of Kensington + Chelsea Art Week yet. There has never been a more important time for us to celebrate the hard work of our community, foster collaboration and support our local culture. We are proud to once again fill our borough with public art installations alongside a rich and diverse programme of cultural highlights, all developed and tailored in response to the momentous events of the past few months. The creative sector and art industry as we know it — like everything else — is deeply affected by the coronavirus. The arts have received a digital boost. Despite the abundance of cultural offerings on the Internet — virtual tours, exhibitions and much more – we have realised how much we need the real-life experience. Although museums and galleries have expanded their digital activities, the pandemic has raised a crucial question: “Who has access to art? Who can afford art today?” After months of uncertainty, and through my personal journey as Director of our festival, I have observed incredible resilience, collaboration and friendships develop between organisations and people that have inspired me and given me courage. They now share this with you. Not only has our festival been extended from three to 11 days with 10 locations added to our Public Art Trail, we have also built new partnerships to focus on mental health. Over 130 venues are taking part in this edition with more than 200 activities being held, ranging from online workshops to socially distanced wine tastings. It has been a collective effort. With our charity partner CW+ we focused on ways in which art can improve wellbeing; with Go Jauntly we developed self-guided discovery trails to encourage outdoors activity; with RBKC we offered support to musicians, artists and poets during lockdown. The enormous effort of our board together with the unwavering support of our sponsors have lead to our most important Kensington + Chelsea Art Week to date. Together, we will do our bit repair the damage wreaked by this unprecedented pandemic. Please enjoy the festival in a safe and respectful manner. Vestalia Chilton, Director KCAW.CO.UK KCAW.CO.UK

KCAW20 HEADLINE PROJECTS
Each year, KCAW conceives and delivers an extraordinary array of Headline Projects. For the 2020 edition we have extended the range of public art installations, and bring to the borough new digital projects, curated walking tours and poetry displays for all to enjoy. KCAW brings eleven days of public art festivities across eight designated zones of the borough and online, brimming with exclusive events and exhibitions. Follow the Public Art Trail from Sloane Square to White City and Holland Park to Latimer Road. Explore the borough and experience exclusive content with the new Culture Map and curated self-guided walks with Go Jauntly. Responding for the first time to an overarching curatorial theme, all KCAW20 Headline Projects take as their inspiration the theme of TRANSFORMATION. Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more about our projects, view the full Kensington + Chelsea Art Week programme, and book your place onto popular talks and events.
PUBLIC ART TRAIL The KCAW Public Art Trail creates temporary landmarks across Kensington and Chelsea, connecting the borough through an evolving discovery trail, explored on foot and through digital experiences. Previous installations included work by Terry O’Neill, Laura Ford, Amanda Parer, James Capper and Richard Woods. The extended Public Art Trail for this year would not have been possible without the support of our Principal Sponsor Cadogan and Kensington and Chelsea Council. In order to give greater visibility to locally based creative talent, KCAW20 hosted an Open Call to artists to submit artworks to be installed in a variety of public spaces during KCAW20, responding to the KCAW20 Curatorial Theme: TRANSFORMATION.

KCAW HEADLINE PROJECTS
“Despite enormous uncertainties we have maintained a strong team and more than doubled our festival activity for 2020. ART IN WINDOWS A new addition this year is Art in Windows featuring local artists and creative studios who will transform store windows along the iconic King’s Road and Kensington High Street, through a series of exhibitions and imaginative interventions. As the high street responds to the pandemic, these empty retail spaces will be brought to life with works by local artists to engage passers-by in a celebration of culture and creativity. KCAW.CO.UK

KCAW X CHELSEA WINDOWS Kensington + Chelsea Art Week is collaborating with exciting local artists and creative studios to activate store windows along iconic Chelsea streets and King’s Road, through a series of exhibitions and imaginative interventions. Participating stores are displaying works by local artists during KCAW20, carefully curated by Caroline Boseley [KCAW] with support from Sarah Farrugia [KCAW]. The Royal Borough has a long history of artistic collaboration, creative discourse and urban counterculture. The high street has long been an inspiration and hub for creatives. For instance, King‘s Road has been connected to designers such as Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood; musicians Malcolm McLaren and Led Zeppelin. It was the residence of celebrated actors and artists; and is home to many innovative institutions, like the Saatchi Gallery and The Fashion School. Inspired by the area, drawing on its cultural legacy, and the success of Chelsea In Bloom (which has taken place since 2006, during the week of Chelsea Flower Show), where retailers create beautiful window displays with flowers, our aim is to showcase the work of artists who live or work within Kensington and Chelsea. KCAW x Chelsea Windows is supported by Sloane Stanley.
KCAW X HIGH STREET KENSINGTON The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea has commissioned eight retail art installations which will be installed in vacant retail premises along Kensington High Street, which will stay in-situ until Christmas with participating artists including Shuster & Moseley, Dotmaster, Lindsay Mendick and Catriona Robertson. Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more about each venue and participating artists.

Visitors can also explore the Public Art Trail and the Windows installations via the Culture Map, gaining access to exclusive content and more information about the installations, their site, and the artists who created them. The Culture Map is conceived as a digital extension of the originally planned KCAW Art Bus, connecting places of interest with Spoken Word and Film Recordings. Supported by RBKC Arts Grant. ALEX CHINNECK ALPHABETTI SPAGHETTI
Alex Chinneck creates surreal sculptures and public artworks that disrupt the world around us. Drawing on the disciplines of art, architecture and engineering, he has been described as a “master of urban illusion” (The Guardian).
within half a mile of over 98% of the population and their design and colour help create a quintessentially British landscape. No variation to their design is allowed, except in very exceptional circumstances.
By introducing sculptural fluidity to a typically inflexible form, the work challenges expectations and promotes child-like wonder.
In recent years, Chinneck has been responsible for a succession of major public artworks, including flagship installations for London Design Festival and Milan Design Week Completed artworks to date include sliding the brick facade from a threestorey property; constructing a fullsize melting house from 7,500 wax bricks; creating the impression that a stone building on London’s Covent Garden Piazza was floating in mid-air; inverting a 37-metre electricity pylon to stand on its very tip; and unzipping the walls, floors and façade of a building in Milan.
Red pillar post boxes are a cultural icon in the UK and there are over 115,500 across the country as a whole. A Royal Mail post box stands
Whatever their scale or setting, Alex Chinneck’s artworks respond to their environment, making the world seem momentarily magical.
Chinneck’s most recent work, A L PH A BE T T I S PAGHE T T I, takes the form of a traditional red metal pillar post box that has been tied in a knot. The sculpture on Lockton St, Notting Hill, presented as part of the KCAW20 Public Art Trail, is one of a series of his knotted post boxes that have appeared overnight on streets across England over the past twelve months.

ALICE IRWIN PEOPLE PLAY
KCAW20 presents the first installation in London of PEO PL E PL AY by Alice Irwin, a series of sculptures exploring Irwin’s long-term interest in the importance of play and of the playground, in particular as a vital place of freedom, interaction and fun. Commissioned by The Piece Hall in Halifax, PEO PL E PL AY is based on Irwin‘s bold, colourful and distinctive printed characters, with a reference to the former mill town’s textile heritage. Irwin works with print, etching and sculpture to reference childhood experiences and creates her own creatures from imaginary worlds. Her larger than life figures acknowledge the families that worked in the cottage industry of textiles, and subsequent Victorian mill workers whose contribution helped place Halifax on the world stage for cloth production.
Irwin hopes the works will inspire a love of play. Whilst the playground, innocence and imagination are integral themes in her practice, aspects of her work often explore a more unsettling subtext and thought-provoking themes. People Play references the importance of play and considers those children that worked long hours in the mills for whom it was not an option, and for some children around the world, is still the fact today.

PEO PL E PL AY is the first outdoor installation by Alice Irwin, who graduated in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in 2018. She has received considerable attention over the past few years, exhibiting widely and winning the Contemporary Art Trust Prize in 2017.

DANIEL BENJAMIN GALLERY JEMMA APPLEBY ONLINE EXHIBITION
Daniel Benjamin Gallery is a contemporary art gallery focusing on emerging and young artists. Past exhibitions included artworks by Josh Rowell, Alexi Marshall, Xiuching Tsay, Willem Weismann, Yanghwa and more. Currently relocating, the gallery is presenting an online exhibition of works by Jemma Appleby. Appleby grinds black charcoal and applies it on paper with her bare hands in a unique creative process that allows for no mistakes. In each of her hypnotising drawings, only parts of the buildings are shown, suggesting that the architecture is not the focal point, but instead an accessory to the protagonist of the work, the light.
During KCAW20 visit the Public Art Installation THROUGH N.3 by represented artist Liz West in Duke of York Sq. Other upcoming projects by Liz West are a solo exhibition at the Hyvinkää Art Museum in Finland and a large scale permanent wall installation for the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. For that occasion the artist will release a new limited edition print, Our Melody Unwound. Part of the proceeds from the sale of each print will support The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. You can find more information on our website.

VESSEL GALLERY BLOWN, BOUND AND BOLD: A SOLO EXHIBITION BY CHRIS DAY
Emerging artist Chris Day makes his debut at Vessel Gallery. The artist, who worked for more than two decades as a self-employed plumber before discovering glass, has produced a series of highly personal pieces that discuss and investigate the treatment of black people in Britain and the United States of America. Within the work he also uses materials derived from heating and electrical systems in a reference to his former career.
“My main purpose is to engage the audience on issues that are hard to confront on many levels, using art to help overcome some of the traumas that haunt our collective past.”
114 Kensington Park Rd, W11 2PW vesselgallery.com
Much of Day’s research has focussed on the history of the slave trade in the Eighteenth Century, with the copper cage in one piece representing the restriction of movement both physically and mentally, emphasising the complete control traders possessed over another human’s life.

BARNABY BARFORD THIS EARTH OF MAJESTY, THIS SEAT OF MARS
As part of its Public Art Trail, KCAW20 presents THIS E ARTH OF MAJEST Y, THIS SE AT OF MARS by British artist Barnaby Barford. At over 2 metres, the sculpture is a giant wizened apple sculpture; the apple is wrinkled, past its best, through decay – it is transforming. This work was born from looking at those in power and at their unscrupulous desire for more. What effect does this have on us,
CASS ART
on society, the country, and the planet? We are on the precipice of unrectifiable transformation. The use of a line from John Gaunt’s famous speech in Shakespeare’s Richard II as the title is imbued with ironic nostalgia. Gaunt’s speech evokes an image of a majestic and beautiful England; yet, despite Gaunt’s praise, the speech gives way to something darker and less pleasant alluding that Richard has turned England into a fallen paradise.

TOY STUDIO IN BLOOM
As part of its Public Art Trail Open Call, KCAW20 presents IN BLOOM by London-based design collective, Toy Studio. IN BLOOM is a geometric sculpture and light installation inspired by the complex forms of the stellated polyhedra. The form intends to stimulate the viewer, a visual tool for contemplating the underlying mathematical nature and beauty of the universe. The sculpture is lit within, casts delicate and intricate shadows onto both its surroundings and its participants, thus incorporating them into the work. It is constructed from 420 laser cut aluminium pieces, assembled into 60 modules, forming 12 pentagons, which are connected into a spherical sculpture and powder coated in a pearl gold finish.
IN BLOOM illustrates one of the many ways one can derive connection and meaning from geometry and other natural wonders and shared it with others through the medium of arts.
Sloane Sq, SW1W kcaw.co.uk toystudio.co.uk
Toy Studio’s work spans the fields of art, architecture, and design. Founded in 2016 by architects Toby Plunkett and Innes Shelley, the studio’s practice is inspired by investigations into natural, mathematical, and scientific systems.

The studio’s work is driven by rulebased parametric design processes and digital tools. These are translated into sculptures and large-scale installation found in both galleries and public spaces. Ultimately, the studio crafts experiential and interactive works which share stories, educate, and form new experiences. Principal Sponsor Cadogan.

LIZ WEST THROUGH N. 3
THROUGH N. 3 by British artist Liz West is a six-metre long triangular prism corridor of light and colour that continues the artist’s exploration of colour and light as primary material for artwork. This walk-through structure encourages visitors to literally look at their surroundings in a different light. West says “Making your way inside the multi-coloured corridor through either side of the structure, visitors will see the world around them transformed by saturate colour. The coloured barrier between the outside and inside will create a multicoloured striped cloak and distortion in an array of different hues, transforming the usual colourations and appearance of the outside environment.”
phenomena can evoke psychological and physical responses that tap into our own deeply entrenched relationships to colour.

Her intuitive and often playful approach to making sculpture and art installations leads to visually rich works that viewers cannot help but be drawn into. Underpinning West’s practice is Josef Albers’ colour theories and his Bauhaus teachings, which she references alongside an informed understanding of Newtonian optics and Goethe’s theory of visual perception.

KING‘S ROAD, CHELSEA COLOURFUL STREET / COLOURFUL LIFE
In this time of uncertainty, King’s Road welcomes the artist and artwork of Lois O’Hara, a born optimist. A naturally effervescent spirit who paints her vision large in murals and whose affinity with colour perfectly suits our setting and mood. COLOURFUL STREET / COLOURFUL LIFE is an abstraction of the shape, flows and colours of King’s Road, creating a visual feast for the eyes.
LOVE MY HUMAN
The project is in collaboration with Pantone and The Pantone Colour Institute to define and expand on our understanding of the colours around us and their impact on our inner and outer worlds. This project pays homage to one of the world’s earliest students of colour, Jacob Christoph Le Blon, who lived on the Sloane Stanley Estate, then known as Chelsea Park.
Love My Human is a contemporary pet boutique with grooming facilities. They place emphasis on well designed and well made pet products and pet food. During KCAW20, Love My Human will display works by an artist who features dogs in their work, and whose style and medium fits in with Love My Human’s design and approach to the ‘modern day pet’.

AMY JACKSON LITTLE VOICES
LIT TLE VOICES is an art piece comprising sculpture, performance, spoken word and visual art. Underrepresented artists and members of society will use a variety of mediums to address the topic: transforming society to solve the climate crisis and the greatest inequalities of our time.
More than just artwork, LIT TLE VOICES is a platform for transformation, containing a wealth of resources, knowledge, craftsmanship and musings. Designed to make us pause and reflect on the biggest challenges we face and determine what we can do to change our world for the better.
The project includes established and emerging artists from marginalised backgrounds and will be available online. The piece shines a light on critical collective action to help us fight major and interlinked societal issues of our time, specifically climate change and inequality.
Amy Jackson is a British artist whose work explores issues such as climate change, consumerism, mental health, social inequalities and critically, how these themes are inextricably linked. Her work often exists outside of the ‘white cube’ and inside the communities it touches.

WHITE CITY
CAMILLE WALALA LES JUMEAUX
A new large-scale public artwork by French artist Camille Walala has been unveiled in White City. Comprising of two uniquely-designed pedestrian crossings and seven striking murals, the artwork entitled L ES J U ME AUX (‘The Twins’), can be recognised by Walala’s signature use of geometric patterns and primary colours. With the easing of lockdown measures set to continue combined with the reopening of many local retailers and outdoor-dining destination The Set at Television Centre, White City Place welcomes the eye-catching installation to the area which transforms the pedestrian crossings on South Africa Road and Wood Lane, whilst the murals adorn the façade of the WestWorks building. With a right turn out of both Wood Lane and White City underground stations, passers-by and visitors are led by the artwork directly to White City Place which, along with the neighbouring Television Centre, has undergone extensive redevelopment into an emerging hub of activity and creativity.
Camille Walala draws inspiration from the strong functional shapes that can be found on the facades of buildings, continuing her renowned installations in the urban landscape. ‘Les Jumeaux’ brings new life to White City with the use of vibrant colours and visually arresting patterns, connecting Walala’s distinctive joyful style with the rich architectural history of the area. Beginning with drawings and collages in a sketchbook, Walala experiments with colour and pattern to develop this large-scale installation through an intuitive, artistic process.
White City, W12 whitecityplace.com #WalalaWhiteCity #WhiteCityPlace #StanhopePLC #CamilleWalala
Commissioned by Stanhope, Mitsui Fudosan and Aimco, ‘Les Jumeaux’ is Walala’s first major public outdoor artwork in West London and is part of White City Place’s wider cultural programme. Walala’s artwork follows the success of international design duo Craig & Karl’s colourful transformation of a disused petrol station on Wood Lane, and Richard Wood’s H O L IDAY H O ME as part of KCAW19. With its playful design and buoyant colour palette, Walala’s latest artwork will inject long-lasting energy into the community.
