WELCOME We are delighted to welcome you to the fourth edition of Kensington + Chelsea Art Week. Building on last year’s success and despite the uncertainties, we are proud to celebrate the resilience of our community with a fantastic programme of events hosted by participating venues and artists. On the theme of Re-Imagine, we have expanded KCAW Public Art Trail to new locations at Earl’s Court, Kensal Canalside and King’s Road Curve; and are welcoming back our partner festivals, The Great Exhibition Road Festival and Shubbak, with activities focusing on the climate emergency and the multi-culturalism of our city. KCAW Art in Windows returns, this time in support of our chosen charity partner the Kensington + Chelsea Foundation. We once again offer an array of tools to explore all that KCAW and our participants have to offer: an interactive Culture Map, curated walks on Go Jauntly, the printed Guide and much more. Tune into Portobello Radio Show this Summer, every Friday from 4-6pm, to hear stories from the local creative community. I would especially like to thank our Advisory Board, our Producer Rebecca Gremmo, the KCAW team, all participating venues, retailers, artists, creators and sponsors without whose unwavering support we would not be able to encourage such an energetic and colourful return to a new normal and to celebrate those working hard to reopen, now. Kensington + Chelsea Art Week began with a public consultation and was founded by a group of volunteering arts industry professionals. Since 2018, the Advisory Board have offered their knowledge, effort, experience, and care for the local community, the board supports all aspects of KCAW and expands year on year. The festival activity is not-for-profit, and this year we have become a Community Interest Company dedicated to supporting young people entering careers in the creative sector. Despite the pandemic, over 75 volunteers joined KCAW in 2020 and many are returning. Their local knowledge and dedication are what makes our festival amazing. This is why we are piloting an enhanced programme for graduate volunteers to join an awards scheme, designed by our Advisory Board members Damian Rayne, Vicky Caplin and Volunteers Manager, Laura Green, to provide ingallery experience to act as a stepping-stone for their future careers. Recovery is a huge part of this year’s focus and we are proud to be working with Kensington and Chelsea Council to launch the inaugural multi-disciplinary Kensington + Chelsea Festival. From 21 June – 31 August, K+C Festival will bring people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired. Welcome back! Vestalia Chilton, Director KCAW.CO.UK KCAW.CO.UK

KCAW21 HEADLINE PROJECTS

Each year, KCAW conceives and delivers an extraordinary array of Headline Projects. For the 2021 edition we have extended the range of public art installations, and bring to the borough new digital projects, curated walking tours and poetry displays for all to enjoy. KCAW brings eleven days of public art festivities across eight designated zones of the borough and online, brimming with exclusive events and exhibitions. Follow the Public Art Trail from Sloane Square to Earl’s Court, and Holland Park to Latimer Road. Explore the borough and experience exclusive content with the interactive Culture Map (map.kcaw.co.uk) and curated self-guided walks with Go Jauntly. Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more about our projects, view the full Kensington + Chelsea Art Week programme, and book your place onto popular talks and events.

CURATORIAL THEME The theme for KCAW21 is: REIMAGINE The theme reflects the Festival’s mission of creating public spaces for conversation and exchange; rethinking the purpose and function of public spaces through Art – from places to pass through to places to dwell, play, dream. Encounters with art help us all to re-imagine what’s possible in our own lives; and creativity involves a daily re-imagination of what’s possible. We will all need to re-imagine the shape of our lives as we seek to re-establish them post- pandemic. But we also must address urgent issues including the climate emergency, reimagining the impact of the Anthropocene; as well as address social and racial justice issues. Asking the questions: What if we had made different choices as species or society? What if we make different choices now? What might life be like if we don’t?

PUBLIC ART TRAIL

“The festival programme celebrates the abundance of local creativity and our community’s resilience after a year of lockdown” Vestalia Chilton, KCAW Director and Founder

The KCAW Public Art Trail creates temporary landmarks across Kensington and Chelsea, connecting the borough through an evolving discovery trail, explored on foot and through digital experiences. In order to give greater visibility to locally based creative talent, KCAW hosts an annual Open Call inviting artists to submit artworks to be displayed in public spaces, responding to the KCAW Curatorial Theme. The shortlisted proposals were selected by an Art Committee of names from across the visual arts, culture, literature and media worlds: the Design Museum’s Director, Tim Marlow; Producer Sara Blonstein; artists Michael Forbes, Faisal Abdu’Allah and Sokari Douglas Camp; Goldfinger’s Marie Cudennec Carlisle; curator Bolanle Tajudeen; art critic Tabish Khan; and Cllr. Gerard Hargreaves, Mayor of RBKC. KCAW X CHELSEA WINDOWS Once again and back by popular demand, KCAW is collaborating with local artists and creative studios to activate store windows along the iconic King’s Road and Fulham Road, through a series of exhibitions and imaginative interventions. Participating stores are displaying works by local artists during KCAW21, carefully curated by KCAW Advisory Board Member Caroline Boseley. The high street has long been an inspiration and hub for creatives. The King‘s Road has been connected to designers such as Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood; musicians Malcolm McLaren and Led Zeppelin. It was the residence of celebrated actors and artists; and is home to many innovative institutions. Inspired by the area, drawing on its cultural legacy, our aim is to showcase artists’ practices and engage visitors to the High Street, in a visual celebration of culture and creativity, turning retail spaces into pop-up contemporary art galleries. . The project supports the KCAW21 Charity Partner, Kensington + Chelsea Foundation, by giving the public the opportunity to purchase prints by participating artists. KCAW x Chelsea Windows and King’s Road Curve Public Art installation are supported by Sloane Stanley. Visit kcaw.co.uk for the full list of installations and to purchase prints.

KCAW X HIGH STREET Since 2020, KCAW has been working with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to create site-specific installations in vacant retail premises, with artists including the Dotmaster, Gala Bell, Alexander Ikhide, Luap, Orlanda Broom, Fiona Grady. Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more about venues and participating artists.

Recover + Reconnect appeal no child left behind

Over the last extraordinary year, thousands of children and young people in Kensington and Chelsea have been badly affected by the pandemic and lockdown. Some have struggled to keep up with school-work due to a lack of digital resources. Many more are feeling anxious and overwhelmed at the crisis and lonely or isolated from their friendship groups. Young people need help to get their studies back on track and to regain confidence and hope for their future. The Kensington + Chelsea Foundation’s new Recover + Reconnect will support children through tutoring, social activities, outdoor exercise and mental health services. “The pandemic has increased the gap in opportunities between rich and poor children. Kids whose families cannot afford home learning resources, whether technology or time and support, have fallen behind in their studies which affects their educational attainment, their confidence and motivation. This Summer we need to focus on supporting those kids not just with their learning, but also getting them away from screens and reminding them how to play with others, build their social skills and confidence.” – Abdi Aden, Earl’s Court Youth Club Please support us to ensure our children and young people overcome some of the barriers caused by the pandemic to reach their full potential. • £50 could provide a child with a 1-2-1 counselling session to help address some of the mental health impact of the pandemic and lockdown • £300 could provide a weekly tutoring session to 10 young people for the next 8 months

A better life together Please give what you can and help ensure no child in our community is left behind. Contact us today at team@thekandcfoundation.com or visit www.thekandcfoundation.com

The block of flats in Kensington and Chelsea, one of England’s wealthiest boroughs, was covered in ACM flammable cladding. The choice of material on the building and the lack of regulations meant the fire could not be contained and resulted in the deadliest fire in Britain since the Second World War.

Seventy-two innocent lives were lost and hundreds of residents displaced. Over the past two years, Feruza Afewerki has met with and photographed survivors, bereaved families and members of the local community. By capturing their portraits and listening to their stories Feruza hopes this exhibition will highlight the humanity and courage of the Grenfell community, honour the memories of loved ones we have lost and bring dignity to people directly impacted by the tragedy. Feruza Afewerki is a photographer, storyteller and a bereaved family member of the Grenfell Community. Gold & Ashes is inspired by Feruza’s desire to humanise the story of Grenfell by offering a space for survivors, the bereaved and the local community to share their voices and truths. Over the last two years, Feruza developed a kinship bond with those photographed; their strength and courage has shown her the beauty in community and given her the drive to reshape the narrative by refocusing on the people at the heart of Grenfell. Feruza dedicates this exhibition to her big sister Amal Ahmedin and niece Amaya Tuccu.

NOTTING HILL ARTS CLUB NOTTING HILL WALK OF FAME

Notting Hill Arts Club and Kensington + Chelsea Art Week present the Notting Hill Walk of Fame, a temporary Public Art installation celebrating the music icons who made their first appearances at the iconic music venue. West is Best, or so they say.. And they would be right.. The Clash, Damon Albarn, Lily Allen, The Who and The Rolling Stones have all called West London their home at some point and most of them still do. At the cultural epicentre of this part of the Capital is Notting Hill Gate and at its heart lies one of the most iconic music venues in the world, Notting Hill Arts Club, which boasts a long legacy of breaking some of our most beloved pop icons into the mainstream.

One, The Killers and more. For many of these artists their appearance at the club was at the very start of their career, highlighting the venue’s longstanding commitment to championing new talent and continuing the rich musical legacy of the area. Further cementing this ethos, the club is home to Notting Hill Academy of Music and Notting Hill Arts Club Recordings, educating and supporting the next generation of industry execs and music artists. Notting Hill is famous for many reasons and a walk of fame starting from The Club to The Gate and beyond would rightly cement its status as an iconic destination, celebrate past, present and future art and musical brilliance, and draw even more people to this pioneering West London hub of creativity.

One of London’s most important art and music institutions, it has hosted countless stars, such as Ed Sheeran, Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, The Libertines, Mark Ronson, Headie

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST GROWING UP

Magnificent Grade I church with wonderful glass, sculpture and painting. Drawn from the experience of postcovid uncertainty, the exhibition ‘Growing Up’ asks 9 artists to reflect on what they’ve learned during the transition from freedom to isolation, and back again and again. This exhibition explores themes of growth, change and development. Through a series of works made by painters who have called the Royal College of Art their home, presented in the unique setting of St. John the Baptist, ‘Growing Up’ asks: is growth more about the process than the end result?

SAIRA JAMIESON LOVE LETTERS & OLD SCARS

This exhibition of paintings is inspired by the chance discovery of Saira Jaimeson’s long-lost diaries and a further hidden entry glued between pages. It described a devastating moment of lost hope, a realisation that the freedom she desperately craved, was futile. A buried memory, surfacing like a tornado in her heart. She yearned to speak to this girl, her former self.

28

So she wrote a love letter of gratitude, for gathering the strength to continue to fight and a promise to her daughter; she would know their history and champion freedom as a basic human right.

VESSEL GALLERY FORMED FROM INSTINCT

Vessel Gallery presents emerging glass artist Nina Casson McGarva first solo exhibition of glass sculptures. Whilst momentarily malleable, immense planes of hot cast glass are coaxed into life. Imbued with the intensity of their creation, each unique artwork is filled with drama and breathtaking poise. In her own words: “The starting point in my work is nature. I take a detail of an element I find in nature and use it as an inspirational base to create my own abstraction, that then builds into a

VITRINKA GALLERY AT THE CZECH CENTRE TENDER IN LONDON

complex sculpture. My inspiration comes from cycles of nature that I associate with glass because to me the material goes through a cycle and is at it’s most alive when it’s hot and being transformed. The end result is solid and doesn’t move any longer, it is at the fragile time before disintegration and maintains a dynamic form and rich structures such as dry leaves, feathers or sea shells. In the making process I shape it hot in an open kiln until the glass stops moving. When the glass transforms to be a solid, the piece is finished”

AMY JACKSON THE ALTERNATIVE ART TRAIL | PORTOBELLO

The Alternative Art Trail is an interactive walk, ephemeral street art piece and a means of reconnecting with nature through mindfulness. Take a never-before-seen journey through the Kensington and Chelsea and remember to pause and reflect. This piece helps us consider art and nature, in terms of impact, aesthetic, medium, fragility and value. Amidst grandiose architecture and the bold artworks installed for KCAW, hides a secret world of nature to explore. Prepare for powerful moments of mindful reflections, contemplate splashes of colour and spot unexpected appearances by collages of moss.

Too often overlooked, these delicate reminders of nature - its ephemerality, resilience and presence are brought into the frame and under the spotlight in this delicately designed (and fully sustainable) Alternative Art Trail. These carefully crafted routes allow us to walk through the ‘same old’ streets whilst journeying through a miniature world. Let this be the year that we continued to slow down and remembered to look up from our phones once again.

NOTTING DALE CAMPUS

A Truly original campus created for extraordinary people.

KIMSOOJA Cities on the Move – 11633 Miles of Bottari Truck, 1998

Set around the focal point of Breaker’s place, each building has its own character and purpose.

The Yellow Building’s most striking and attention-grabbing atrium artwork is the 2 Ton Hyundai Truck by Korean artist Kimsooja currently parked and overlooking Breaker’s Place.

An unrivalled and striking contemporary art collection by world famous artists adorns the Notting Dale Campus, truly setting it apart from any other working environment in London. The collection spans a wide range of eras, media and styles, from Jeff Koons’ Baroque Egg with Bow which sits proudly in The Yellow Building atrium alongside work by David Hockney, to Damien Hirst’s famous ‘spot painting’ in The George Building and specially commissioned sculpture by Philip King, Tra La La at the heart of the campus in Breaker’s Place. Creativity plays an important role in the campus’s spirit and the evolving collection keeps this alive with celebrated curators continuing to source and add to it.

32

The truck’s bed is loaded with a mound of colourful Bottari (cloth bundles sewn by Kimsooja herself ) bound together to form an interactive piece of performance art. The truck was driven through Korean cities from November 4 to 14, 1997 with Kimsooja sitting atop the bundles capturing the journey on film to create a reflection on the role of women in society, and voluntary or involuntary migration and movement. The film has been shown around the world and even projected onto a Seoul building – she has since recreated this in cities such as Paris proving its global contemporary relevance by evoking both a nostalgic feeling for the past whilst projecting hope for the future and new beginnings. The truck may have found its resting positioning at Notting Dale but the stories it has told and the roads it has travelled will forever give it meaning in a changing world.

24 HOURS TO REALIGN THE WORLD BY MR. LISP If you was given 24 hours to re-align the world, what would you do? Would you use recycled toilet paper, when you go to the loo?, Would you put on the light in the middle of the day or open the curtains and embrace the natural ray? Would you put all your rubbish in just one bin or would go green recycle your papers, plastic, cans and tins ? Would you open a window and let in some fresh air, or would you still spray artificial air fresheners with out no care? Instead of driving Would you walk to the shops ? would you get off the bus early and walk the remaining stops? Would you light that fag, or put it back in your bag ? We already know air pollution is at an all time bad. Would you watch a box set on Netflix, as you consume copious amounts of sweets, cakes and chips or would you go for a leisurely stroll, appreciating nature and smashing your daily fitness goals? We have choices galore, but each choice has an impact on what’s next in store. The polar caps are melting as we speak and how long have you been putting off fixing that tap with the leak? We all can do our bit, but change ain’t going to happen if we remain and sit.

ZAK OVÉ AUTONOMOUS MORRIS

KCAW is proud to collaborate with artist Zak Ové and the Design Museum to bring a public installation of Ové’s sculpture, Autonomous Morris. Standing at approximately 3-metres high, Autonomous Morris is a monumental sculpture made from deconstructed and collaged vintage car parts, welded together to produce a futuristic yet retro, cross-cultural totemic mask. Autonomous Morris is a motorised ‘Macco’ – a person who involves themselves in other people’s business for the purpose of gossip and posterity. Ové’s sculpture references his interest in the sculptural aspects of cars, using them to represent geographical movement, historical documentation, protection and nostalgia. The sculpture is entirely made from discarded car parts including several vintage Morris Minor bonnets,

44

referencing the assumed British tradition of Morris Dancing, which in reality came to the UK courtesy of the Moors. As an unwitting monument to the recent news that the last V W Beetle is to roll off the production line next year, the sculpture’s organic lines and animated filmic representations add to the cultural potency of the material. “I’m fascinated by ideas around time travel, the spread of diaspora and the positive effects of colliding cultures. My sculpture highlights my belief in the power or play embodied in masquerade, to liberate a sense of self and provide an alternate or evolving creative space both personal and commu- nal. Autonomous Morris soaks up contemporary oral history and information, recording and storing as a ‘never forgetterer’. He listens to your aspirations, your pride, joy and anguish, acting as a receiver and archiver of memory.” – Zak Ové

LR VANDY SUPERHERO COG-WOMAN #01

In her sculptures, LR Vandy brings together both found and made objects in order to create new meaning from seemingly unrelated mediums forced together. A large Jesmonite sculpture from the series Superhero Cog-Woman, this work, on view in Napoleon Garden for Summer 2021, is a tribute to women throughout time, alluding to how women have often acted as the unmentioned drivers of industry, toiling long and hard but underrated, often overlooked and largely unrecognised. Cogs are mechanical components used to connect one thing to another, literally enabling things to be driven forward. As such, they act as a perfect metaphor for the role of women in industry and indeed in society in general. Made of Jesmonite and polished steel, the sculpture is formed by stacking the cogs onto a splined

AMY JACKSON THE ALTERNATIVE ART TRAIL | HIGH ST KENSINGTON

In these challenging times, many of us are looking forward to when life can go back to “normal.” This may not only be unrealistic, but a more probable threat than the pandemic when we consider the cumulative impacts of climate change. The deceleration of the economy has been necessary to stymie the spread of disease, but it has also shown us that we can slow down. Through a seismic shift in the way we live, we have learned to breathe, to pause and to seek beauty in the little and local world around us. Some of us have reconnected with nature, reimagined what we see before us and reconsidered our footprint on the planet.

46

Amy Jackson is a British artist whose work explores issues such as climate change, consumerism, mental health, social inequalities, and critically, how these themes are inextricably linked. Her work often sits outside of the ‘white cube’ and inside the communities it touches.

ANTHONY GARRATT WILD WORDS

WildWords, by artist Anthony Garratt, is a means of challenging the way in which poetry and the written word are presented and interacted with. It is an opportunity to temporarily place words in the context of their inspiration and in unexpected places, outdoors. Quotes from historically celebrated naturalists and wordsmiths have been selected alongside quotes and poem extracts from the present day; the kids and future generations who are responsible for our future relationship with the natural world. The selected words which take inspiration from the subject ‘reimagine the natural world’ have been temporarily ‘scorched’ into areas of short grass at various locations across West London. They will appear over a couple of days as the grass dies and alters from green to brown.

Over a couple of months; the time it will take for the grass to recover, the poems / words will transition from brown, back to green, until finally disappearing once recovery is complete. Time-lapse footage and photography will be the only evidence of the installation once the words have disappeared. All of the locations and credits to the writers can be viewed on the project website: wild-words.co.uk

wild-words.co.uk wildwordsinstallation Avondale Park Chelsea Common Cremorne Gardens Chelsea Embankment Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park Holland Park Ropers Gardens Tavistock Gardens Westfield Park Yalta Memorial Garden Find all locations at: wild-words.co.uk map.kcaw.co.uk

The action of burning the quotes into the ground implies a commitment and an assurance to the words, and the subsequent recovery engenders a respect for the power of nature to overcome the human action.

IF I COULD FLY If I could fly, I would fly really fast and fly back to the past. l would feel like a hero that is brave like fire. l would see clouds, houses, the ground, the sky and other animals that can fly. l would circle the world like the Earth circles the hot sun. l would circle it so fast it would look like I’m on the run. l would travel to the future and take the knowledge from there to bring it back to the present, then tell everyone that the future will be pleasant. ASMAA ALANBARI GILGAMESH

Asmaa Alanbari is an exhibition curator interested in telling the stories of communities through immersive experiences. She directs the interplay of light, colour, form and sound, bringing to life plans of the imagination into three dimensions. Her new exhibition ‘Gilgamesh’ (2,500 BC Babylon, Iraq) fuses painting, video projections and music to reinterpret the ancient myth in a contemporary way. Here she collaborates with Alya Al-Sultani, composer and performer, in inviting the public to get immersed in ‘light and sound paintings’.

62

Alanbari’s work is anchored in a number of postgraduate degrees in art, architecture and urban economics. Being Iraqi, French and British, she believes that art and culture are powerful tools in advancing intercultural dialogue and in subverting stereotypes. She co-curated the “In Between Show” at Saatchi Gallery (2015), a celebration of people who do not conform to societal clichés and expectations. BAKER & BOROWSKI THE PLEASURE GARDEN

KCAW is collaborating with artists Baker & Borowski to transform a meanwhile space on Warwick Road opposite Earl’s Court Underground station. As part of Underbelly’s London Wonderground set in the former site of the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre, this botanical wonderland is created especially for the Summer 2021. The artists’ takeover is made up of a huge 35-metres mural inspired by local wild flowers, alongside sculptural structures and a floor design reminiscent of ‘Sumer of Love’ colours and echoing the Pleasure Gardens popular in the area during 18th Century. The focus of this installation, however, is on 21 century and our modern considerations of nature in the urban environment. Inspired by the flora and fauna of Kensington and Chelsea, the area is transformed into a meanwhile space encouraging visitors to enjoy the previously closed site.

66

zone 6 – earl’s court

The Pleasure Garden takeover by Baker & Borowski is part of KCAW Public Art Trail, and marks the opening of the inaugural Kensington + Chelsea Festival. The summer long performing and visual arts programme will run from 21 June to 31 August, and will pop up at Underbelly’s London Wonderground as part of K+C Festival weekender hub at Empress Place. Baker & Borowski is a partnership between artists and curators Lee Baker and Catherine Borowski, cultivating and commissioning incursions of art into unexpected places. In 2017 the two artists teamed up to re-conceive the idea of the exhibition space, launching SKIP Gallery – an ongoing series of collaborative, sitespecific artworks housed in skips on public sites. United as Baker & Borowski, the duo are on a mission to bring unexpected eruptions of art into the everyday urban landscape.

HUMAN CONNECTION BY RAMONA GALARDI I desperately want to connect with you

Oh stranger I passed on the street

Our eyes locked Momentarily We smiled

With our eyes

The only body part left exposed

We smile

We see each other Heart-warming

Just a fleeting connection

But real

In 2 heart beats

I still remember My heart smiles In hope

And need

Of Human Connection

LAUREN BAKER POETIC LIGHT TYPOGRAPHY

Lauren Baker is an experimental artist whose practice expands across multiple disciplines and mediums to address the vastness of the universe. Passionate about environmental issues and sustainability, the artist uses light to express the ‘secrets of the universe’ and aims to raise the vibration of love and connection within the world. For KCAW21, Baker presents a series of her signatures neon installations, which portray the power of energy through poetic typographic and celestial chakra artworks. Displayed in unexpected locations, in Sloane Square, Duke of York Square and the surrpunding area, the works inspire passers-by to contemplate life, joy, existence with works inspired by their location. The poetical installations also resonate with the artist’s favourite local icons including Vivienne Westwood, The Beatles and Oscar Wilde.

74

With phrases such as ‘The Answer is Inside’ and ‘Expect Magic and Miracles’, Baker’s works are designed to inspire an upgrade in mindset through positive mantras and affirmations. Their messages encourage us to reimagine the situation we are living in now, to reimagine our thoughts, to look inwards, to transmute darkness and to evolve our consciousness. The goal is to create unity, joy and to have a beautiful impact in the world. Conceptually grounded but also aesthetically striking, her work involves making the unseen seen. Baker’s visual style is often built around emitting or reflecting light. A sense of mystery and emergence - of connecting with something beyond or much bigger than our own immediate world - pulsates throughout her work. Principal Sponsor Cadogan.

SHUBBAK FESTIVAL EVERY ACT OF RECOGNITION ALTERS WHAT SURVIVES

Sited online and in Chelsea Physic Garden, London’s oldest botanic garden, ‘Every Act of Recognition Alters What Survives’ is a dynamic, episodic work by Rand Abdul Jabbar, a multi-disciplinary artist born in Baghdad and now living in Abu Dhabi. Consisting of a series of sculptural interventions, performances and a digital archive, the work emerged from a participatory process in which women of the Iraqi and Arab diaspora in London engaged in conversation around the role of memory in relation to place and history. Sensitively positioned in the four acre atmospheric Chelsea Physic Garden close to the Thames, four sculptural interventions are set in dialogue with the wide range of plants from across the world, the plants resonate with the artists themes of migration and dispersion.

On certain days co-collaborator Entissar Hajali, one of the original workshop members, leads audiences through a performance walk, reciting her specially written personal text ‘The Climbing Vine.’ The fourth intervention ‘The Garden Scene’ is a re-imagining of the relief of Queen Libbali-Sharrat’s Gardens at Ninevah, currently in the British Museum. The artist’s sculptural response, made to the same size as the original, conveys the collective experience shared by the group of women who are undertaking the journey of ‘Every Act of Recognition Alters What Survives’ together.

EUGENIE VRONSKAYA + PETER COWDREY PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION REIMAGINED

Russian composer Modeste Mussorgsky wrote Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874, inspired by a visit to an exhibition commemorating his artist friend Victor Hartmann. Each of the ten numbers of the suite is a musical picture inspired by an individual work by Hartmann. In a dancing whirl of creative colour Russian artist Eugenie Vronskaya reverses the creative process and reimagines the music on canvas in real time, while Peter Cowdrey plays Mussorgsky’s spectacular original score on the piano.

ONE WORLD, ONE DREAM BY SONIA BEN ACHOURA Night fell and the moon appeared. Silver crescent in the midnight sky, Looking down and reminding the people to rest, And prepare for the day ahead. All the people slept and dreamt. All the people of the Earth, every tribe on the Earth. They slept and dreamt of better days, As a rain of dreams descended. Showering them with a multitude of colours, Hues of love and wonder, Lifting the rage and cleansing the wounds. In the morning the people rose with pure hearts The Earth had healed. The dreams of all tribes came in all colours and sizes. Every dream is a brick. With new resolve and clarity they set out to unite, And rebuild their world, One dream at a time. ‘This poem was written during the first lockdown, a time of extraordinary emotional intensity. The depths of despair sank lower with the death of George Floyd. The world was shaken. New dreams emerged. It was time to reimagine a new world, a new society, that emphasises equality. For the first time I spent three consecutive days writing poetry. I also painted a series of paintings entitled ‘The Dreams of The World’. This poem corresponds specifically to the painting entitled Human Eclipse.’ Sonia Ben Achoura soniabenachoura.com @soniabenachoura

YAN SKATES OUR BEST FRIEND (THE DOG)

This floral sculpture installation is dedicated to the memory of KCAW Advisory Board member Sarah Farrugia who worked tirelessly to support cultural activities in the area for many years; her work included making sure that flower baskets appeared in the famous King’s Road, a place and community which she loved dearly. Part of KCAW Public Art Trail and supported by Sloane Stanley the artwork is created by artist and florist Yan Skates. It features a 2metre tall dog, made from discarded materials and living plants. The sculpture acts as a symbol of companionship but is also a figure that we can all recognise and relate to. It invites us to get close and investigate the work, its unusual materials; encouraging conversation and connections. This installation is based on the lessons learnt by Skates whilst taking part in Netflix’s The Big Flower Fight, where he was asked to create large scale animals and creatures out of waste and plants. The work urges us to reimagine the way we live today. Using discarded materials such as water bottles, alongside living plants,

the sculpture is a reminder of the urgent issues of pollution and waste, and invites us to think of our own impact on the environment.

Danish born Yan Skates started his company, Bespoke Flowers, in 1999. Having set up a fine art studio in Spitalfields, a chance meeting led to setting up a flower stall in the thriving Spitalfields Sunday Market.

In the late 90’s this was the regular meeting point of the vibrant Young British Artist Scene with regular costumers being Gavin Turk, Patrick Hughes, The Chapman Brothers, Tracey Emin and Gilbert & George amongst many others. Bespoke Flowers client list includes everything from Royals, to fashion brands to Charity Fundraising balls and visual merchandising. In 2006 a visit to a flower arranging show with his grandmother opened Yan’s eyes to competitive floristry and a very engaged period ensued with several prizes including a Chelsea Gold Medal, A 1st prize at Hampton Court Flower Show and a 1st prize at The Nationals. Yan still competes in flower shows.
