welcome Welcome to our 6th Edition! We are delighted to celebrate our return with yet another fantastic programme of events hosted by venues and artists in our unique area of West London. On the theme of THE ART OF CHANGE, we have expanded KCAW Public Art Trail to new locations including Knightsbridge and South Kensington. Two toilet roll sculptures have been surreptitiously incorporated into the Art Trail - on your art walk, see if you can find them using our digital map (map.kcaw.co.uk) - hint: one is made in marble. KCAW Poetry Corner returns by popular demand in support of local poets, spot them in participating venues across the 8 Zones of Art Week Map. This year, KCAW x Chelsea Windows are curated by Jack Trodd where artists are exhibiting works in King’s Road at some of our favourite local retailers. Spot them in windows across the area and follow self-guided trails by downloading the Go Jauntly app. You can also join me on a borough-wide self-guided cycle tour of the art trail. If you’re curious to find out more about any of our artists, then use our QR codes which can be found next to each artwork to listen to interviews conducted by Portobello Radio’s Piers Thompson. Piers will also host the Art Bus on 1st July, a free five-hour hop on-and-off open bus tour of the Art Trail, with talks from art experts, live entertainment and DJs. And don’t miss Ministry of Arts podcasts with participating artists talking to Gary Mansfield. This year we forged a new partnership with local community students from Morley College who will be your volunteers around the entire Art Trail; you will recognise them from their volunteers’ t-shirts, designed by them through their participation in a public art design project in North Kensington. We are particularly proud of our charity partner, The Playground Theatre’s charitable outreach programme of special events and performances for this edition of Art Week. This year, Saira Jamieson returns to KCAW as artist-in-residence at The Exhibitionist Hotel, where she is hosting her immersive art programme of beautiful installations and events, and where our Opening Reception will be held on 22nd June. Founded on its core values to make public art accessible to all, KCAW started as a not-for-profit arts festival in 2018, having begun with a public consultation by a group of volunteering arts industry professionals, who now comprise its dedicated Advisory Board. I would like to thank them, the KCAW management team, and especially our Public Art Trail Committee who selected the Art Trail finalists, as well as all participating venues, retailers, artists, creators, and our sponsors, without whose support we would not be able to fund any festival activity. We look forward to welcoming you! Vestalia Chilton, Director KCAW.co.uk

kcaw23 headline projects Each year, KCAW conceives and delivers an extraordinary array of Headline Projects. For the 2023 edition we have extended the range of public art installations, and brought to the borough new digital projects, curated walking tours and poetry displays for everyone to enjoy. Brimming with exclusive events and exhibitions, KCAW brings eleven days of public art festivities across nine designated zones. Follow the Public Art Trail from Sloane Square to Earl’s Court, from Holland Park to Ladbroke Grove, and experience exclusive content with our interactive Culture Map (map.kcaw.co.uk), as well as curated self-guided walks with Go Jauntly. Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more about our projects, view the full KCAW programme, and book your place for popular talks and events.

Curatorial Theme: The Art of Change “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new” - Socrates Progress is impossible without change, the alternative is stagnation. The key lies in embracing this reality and even seeking it, in order to access the unimaginable. Change is a moment of bravery and action, the moment to embrace the flow of chance that’s the moment of freedom, the feeling of change in the air.

CORE TALKS PROGRAMME We have expanded our talks programme to include conversations with participating Art Trail artists, whom visitors will be able to meet at Cromwell Place, where leading experts in architecture, city planning, and the arts, such as Dr Georges Kachaamy, Professor of Architecture at The American University in Dubai, and Architect and Urbanist, Victoria Whenray, will discuss how culture informs and impacts city planning.

KCAW X CHELSEA WINDOWS For the 4th year, KCAW is collaborating with Sloane Stanley to create an exhibition curated by Jack Trodd that spans nine shop front windows along the iconic King’s Road. Participating stores, restaurants and cafes will display ground-breaking artworks by London’s most exciting emerging artists throughout Art Week and beyond. For this year’s edition, THE ART OF CHANGE theme is reflected in these ’ones-to-watch’ artists’ unique styles, changing perceptions on what’s possible, utilising classical art movements and methods in totally new ways, whilst spotlighting the positively changing commercial landscape that is seeing more businesses championing young artists. As seen in this project, retail spaces become pop-up contemporary art galleries, artists have the chance to reach new audiences and show their work in unique locations, whilst the public is invited to discover the up-and- coming artists and enjoy the High Street enriched with creativity.

DIGITAL PROGRAMME ‘SARABESQUE’ by artist Saira Jamieson “It isn’t words, but the semiotic power behind scripture that holds a spell over me.” - Saira Jamieson Join London-born artist Saira Jamieson on her 10 day experimental digital art project at the Exhibitionist Hotel in South Kensington. A rising star on the London arts scene, Saira has exhibited in London, Paris, New York, and Miami, in addition to being a spotlighted SuperRare artist. Saira is a vocal advocate of the revolutionary Web3, and uses her presence as a speaker, host and panellist to champion female creatives and the under-represented; she was recently invited by Tate to participate in a talk about the vital role of South Asian artists. The rich narrative of Saira’s multi-disciplinary work is deeply personal and courageous, and embraces traditional skills alongside modern technology. As an official partner of KCAW, Saira will host an array of immersive events, during which her sensory, thought-provoking and experiential exhibition will showcase her cursive, feminine and seductive style through painting and pixels, sharing her compelling stage with creatives from across the music, spoken word, performing arts and culinary worlds.

The PlayGround Theatre Official charity partner The Playground Theatre, formerly a bus depot, was originated as a creative space for innovative theatre artists of all disciplines to ‘play’ with their imaginative ideas. Over half of the activity the Playground undertakes is in its local community of North Kensington. ‘Well Read’ their flagship service (which originated in St Charles Mental Health Unit and continues to be delivered there) has engaged over 450 unique participants: Reducing isolation, improving well-being and promoting fun, through reading plays aloud in a group, facilitated by a theatre professional, the priority being participation, not perfection. Well Read is adaptable: Reading to dementia day patients, or mixing professional actors, community members and technology to live-stream Well Read to New York. Their education projects, in conjunction with Nicholas Kent’s award-winning Grenfell Inquiry plays, have engaged hundreds of young people across London, as have ‘Dalgarno Drama Clubs’, Playground Summer Schools and in housing KAA’s drama department. Latest service ‘We Start’ is supported by Grenfell Recovery Fund. Locals can make and access arts, develop artistic careers and improve skills. From sculpture to spoken word poetry. This summer they are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the arrival of The Windrush, specifically the people it brought to our local community. Quotes from their service users: ‘After (Well Read) finished I felt like I was on fire!!’ ‘The only reason I came out today was your group’ ‘Well Read is a framework for interaction without the pressure of having to connect directly, focussing instead on the characters.’ The Playground Theatre 8 Latimer Industrial Estate343 - 453 Latimer Road London W10 6RQ Boxoffice@theplaygroundtheatre.london info@theplaygroundtheatre.london

goldfinger

Photography gallery established in 2015, specialising in previously unseen bodies of work. Taught by both Walker Evans and Minor White, two photographic masters, Baldwin Lee spent his free time in the mid-to-late 80s documenting Black communities in America’s southern states. During this period Lee created an extraordinary body of work, having produced 10,000 monochrome 5 x 4” negatives. These images are only now being seen by the world. In the words of the New York Times, ‘Baldwin Lee is one of those artists who teach us to see’

Ten years ago, Goldfinger opened its doors for the first time, with the founding belief that design can be a force for good.

Emslie Horniman Mural CHILDREN ARE OUR RISING STARS - JUNIOR TOMLIN

This design, located in a children’s playground in the Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park, was selected by anonymous vote by the community. The chosen artwork by local artist, also known as the Salvador Dali of Rave, Junior Tomlin was based on elements of the environment, and encapsulates historical, social, and aspects of the area. “Every child is a star - they are a constant reminder of where we all started – comments Junior. I wanted to show that in my proposal – there are lots of stars and they are vthe children. In addition, I included musical symbols to reference the rich cultural heritage of our community. Here is an abundance of musical talent and the fact, every year, Panorama Steel Pan is held in the park. I included a line of text in the design from my visit that inspired me to make a sentence ‘Be kind to one another and respect life and help others in need’.” In Junior’s words.

Roof of Coronet Theatre The spirit of painting - Gavin Turk

Mysteriously landing on the cupola of The Coronet Theatre during the quiet of a global pandemic, a lonely figure poses in the adlocutio stance of an Emperor in ancient Rome addressing his troops. Contra to this heroic posture, this figure portrays the artist in his studio overalls painting the sky with a paintbrush instead of a sword, palette as shield. Originally designed to have a sculpture of Mercury on the roof of the theatre, now the messenger God of commerce has become a prophetic painter of our current hubris. ‘I imagine being in the sky, I thought of an oversized paint splattered stepladder on the roof, to help a giant decorator to paint the clouds or change the earth’s light bulb (sun).’ Gavin Turk

The Coronet Theatre presents an eclectic programme of theatre, film, dance, music, poetry and visual art in its intimate 195-seat main auditorium and 90-seat studio space, re-named The Print Room in recognition of the company’s previous home at a nearby print works. A fusion of multi-disciplinary international and UK work, The Coronet Theatre stages a mix of new productions, commissions and visiting artists, including a number of UK and world premieres. We offer memorable and often unexpected experiences for our audiences, while supporting established artists and nurturing new talent.

Gavin Turk uses art historical referencing as a material to question art itself. This figure takes its form from Alfred Drury’s sculpture of Sir Joshua Reynolds, a familiar iconic statue grand-standing in the courtyard of the Royal Academy. Where the Drury sculpture portrays the first president of the RA as a member of the establishment, this contemporary classic presents the artist as artisanal workman. At this time of fierce debate around public sculpture this portrait brings a new provocation to the conversation.

Freston Road WE REST - by Bokani and Birungi curated by Black Blossoms

A vibrant new large-scale public mural is unveiled on Freston Road as part of the #BLM project launched by KCAW together with Bolanle Tajudeen. This is the 3rd mural to go up on this site The mural ‘We Rest’ is also part of the Untold Stories initiative, part of the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm. KCAW and curatorial art platform Black Blossoms, selected local London artists Birungi Kawooya and Bokani to create the new artwork located on a large hoarding on Freston Road, W10, which will be unveiled in April. After presenting 3 designs to the public vote, the design titled ‘WE REST’ was a clear favourite. In this large-scale artwork, artists Birungi and Bokani collaborate with their different and distinct art styles to inspire the community about how we can relax, rejuvenate, and restore. The artists worked with participants from the local community who attend Homefield House Children Centre to explore ideas around rest as a source of nourishment. In response to the workshops held with the groups, artists BOKANI and Birungi collaborated to create three artwork designs that drew the attention of the broader community to the many ways rest can manifest and

the physical and psychological benefits it can have on individuals. CHOSEN MURAL ‘WE REST’

Freston Road, W10 Opposite Bramley Studios Open 24/7 Disabled access: yes

In this collaborative mural, the dreamscape of Bokani’s abstract painting provides the perfect space for Birungi’s figures to be free to think, dance, and play in nature but, most importantly, rest. The artists also reflected on their personal and cultural experiences of resting and how in a demanding and capital-driven society, rest becomes a reward.

Flash-crowd Meditation - ‘Black Womxn at Rest’ During Art Week Black Blossoms and artists BOKANI and Birungi Kawooya in collaboration with KCAW and the Mayor of London’s ‘Untold Stories’ Fund will host a flashmob on 28 June 2023 at 4:30 pm to 5pm inside the atrium. No need to book, just turn up for a moment of rest and meditation. The meditation is part of the activities surrounding a subject matter of rest and wellness, based on a mural created by the artists titled ‘Black Womxn at Rest’, which challenges societal expectations and encourages a much-needed dialogue on the importance of rest and self-care.

GALLERY THIRTEEN PLANETS

Gallery Thirteen is the Studio and Exhibition space for artist Hermès Lucas. It brings together works from international exhibitions and biennales. Most works are photographs using Hermès’ style that is strongly influenced by his early passion for sketching and drawing and an in-depth study of sculpture, architecture and the classical aesthetic and philosophy on creation underpinning it.. Amongst the techniques used, this is also brought to life by the use of obsolete positive and negative film and traditional darkroom printing techniques. Hermès’ recent exhibitions show

fluidity in both extreme convergence and divergence, immersed in notions of egalitarianism and universality.

the Design Museum Ai Weiwei

We are delighted to showcase Ai Weiwei as part of KCAW Public Art Trail. “Marble Sofa” [pair], 2011 and “Pendant (Toilet Paper)”, 2021 are displayed outside the Design Museum as part of the exhibition Ai Weiwei: Making Sense. “Marble Sofa” [pair], 2011 (free to visit, displayed next to the museum’s High Street Shop) is a replica of two chairs owned by Ai’s father. In replacing leather with marble, he has turned a commonplace object into a sculpture that is less functional but more precious, which was a common practice among the rulers of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644 CE). In the museum’s courtyard visit “Pendant (Toilet Paper)”, 2021, another of Ai’s sculptures (free to visit, displayed next to the museum’s entrance). Toilet paper, a seemingly worthless item, was suddenly much sought after when it became scarce during the Covid-19 pandemic. The artist was struck by this because the item was a luxury when he was growing up in China. By carving this roll in marble on a grand scale, he memorialises a moment when we were forced to recognise the value of ordinary things. Ai Weiwei is one of the most significant and recognised artists working today. Known around the world for his powerful art and activism, Ai does not differentiate between disciplines: his practice glides across art, architecture, design, film, collecting and curating.

His latest major exhibition at The Design Museum, developed in collaboration with the artist, is the first to present his work as a commentary on design and what it reveals about our changing values. Through his engagement with material culture, Ai explores the tension between past and present, hand and machine, precious and worthless, construction and destruction. Ai is fascinated by historical Chinese artefacts, placing their traditional craftsmanship in dialogue with the more recent history of demolition and urban development in China - resulting in a meditation on value – on histories and skills that have been ignored or erased.

leighton house Shahrzad Ghaffari: Journey to Oneness Nour Hage: Kheit Evelyn De Morgan: The Gold Drawings

With paintings on loan from Ghaffari’s own collection, highlights include a highly personal piece, Lion and Sun (2010), a rare example of figurative painting created in response to protests against the Iranian regime in 2009. Reinterpreting an ancient Persian symbol, Shahrzad depicts a female lion, to represent the strength and courage of women in the face of oppression. Written over the lion’s flank and sword are the words ‘my body, my choice, my rights’, which allude to Shahrzard’s views on feminism, particularly in the context of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which has gained momentum in Iran and beyond in recent year. Meaning ‘thread’ in Arabic, Kheit presents three artworks created in response to the tiles in Leighton House’s Arab Hall and staircase hall. An award-wining textile artist, Nour has also researched the museum’s collection of antique textiles, featuring Syrian clothing, Ottoman hangings and runners, and Iranian carpets.

loaned by the Trustees of the De Morgan Foundation and Victoria Dolorosa from the Leighton House collection. In addition, preparatory drawings for the figure of St. Francis made in pastel on paper are included to showcase De Morgan’s working method and skill as a draftswoman. This exhibition will be the first since 1889 to display a group of these beautiful artworks made in brilliant gold pigment on dark grey woven paper. De Morgan initially discovered this technique through Edward Burne-Jones but her works went beyond this initial inspiration. Using solid blocks of pure gold pigment and grinding them to a powder, she invented crayons and paints that she then specifically applied to the production of her drawings, which remain luminous today. Featuring angels, saints, biblical figures and mythological deities, these drawings celebrate those who are in some way superhuman, or close to godly. Depicting her subjects in gold suggests De Morgan made the drawings to possess talismanic qualities.

The exhibition Evelyn De Morgan: The Gold Drawings (11 March - 27 August) explores De Morgan’s unique practice of making gold drawings, showcasing 13 artworks

Sambourne house

Sambourne House is the family home of legendary illustrator Linley Sambourne (1844 - 1910). Tucked away in Holland Park, a leafy neighbourhood in West London, stand Leighton House and Sambourne House. Combining living and studio space, the houses remain largely unchanged today. They are the extraordinary legacies left by two ‘celebrities’ of the late Victorian era – Frederic Lord Leighton (18301896) and Edward Linley Sambourne (1844 -1910).

Leighton and Sambourne lived as neighbours for over 20 years and had many acquaintances in common. They were widely known to their contemporaries; Leighton as the most prominent artist of his day, a celebrated painter and president of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sambourne as Chief Cartoonist at the infamous satirical magazine Punch. Their similar tastes were reflected in the furnishing of their homes, both filled with sculpture, blue and white ceramics and glassware. But if we delve beyond the physical artefacts, what do we know about these men, their lives and careers, and why do their former homes capture our imagination today?

Napoleon Garden, Holland Park The Cloud House Wendy House - PETER MORIS

The Cloud House Wendy House is a scale model of The Cloud House, by Peter Morris, simplified and reconfigured as an open-frame Wendy House and public sculpture, created especially for KCAW Art Trail 2023. The Cloud House concept is born out of the desire to create a public artwork where children can play, and have their imaginations piqued; and where adults can experience a moment of delight that will remind them of their own childhoods. A Wendy House is a playhouse named after the character Wendy Darling from Peter Pan, written by JM Barrie, who lived on Kensington. As an object for play, this little Cloud House embraces the joyful spirit of Peter Pan, and celebrates the glorious pastel colours of some of Chelsea’s prettiest streets – the area that had a powerful impact on the development of Morris’s’ own creativity and the realisation of dreams.

I moved to the King’s Road, and it blew my mind. This magical place, Chelsea – with its stylish people, and streets of pretty pastel-colored houses – combined with the brilliant creativity I was encountering at the RCA, changed my life forever.

Napoleon Garden, Holland Park, W8 Disabled access: yes petermorrisarchitects petermorrisarchitects.com

It was a place beyond imagination, a place of wonder and delight. And it’s where my dream was born – to build, one day, a pink house for myself, where I could live with my future family. Now, aged 51, I hope that dream is about to come true. The Cloud House – a fairy-tale pink palace with a cloud-shaped roof – is to be built, near Hampstead Heath. Chelsea won’t be its home, but it will forever be the place that led to its creation. Kensington & Chelsea changed me, and this artwork reflects and celebrates that change.”

“Thirty-five years ago, I was living in the Midlands. My mum worked in a factory. My dad worked as a shepherd. And we had no money. It was a world away from Chelsea.

Peter Morris

I was dyslexic, had been to 12 secondary schools, and had two GCSEs to my name. But then something miraculous happened. I started dreaming, and I started drawing. Thanks to those drawings, I won a place to study Architecture at university. And in 1997 I was offered a place at the Royal College of Art.

The rich narrative of her multidisciplinary work is compelling, deeply personal and courageous, embracing traditional skills with modern technology. “I love what my work has become. A synaesthesia of visualisations, sounds and pictures forever in my head, now exposed. The vibrancy of Bollywood and spiritual essence of Qawwali prayers from my childhood forged into a new expression; Sarabesque. Fused with my career in music, video production and my love of art, dance, and tech. The series weaves all these elements together, bringing my art and history to life, fluid and transformative in a perpetual state of change. It represents the very beauty of scripture; forever evolving but eternally connected to our origin.”

The lightweight modules can be linked together to fit the space and can be easily hung between walls or on a façade. The installation addresses the complex part of the ecosystem that exists in the invisible part of the city, especially underground. A massive network of mycorrhizal mycelium and fungi can connect many parts of our environment and plays an important role in the functioning of our world. The idea of a great system of invisible links is present not only in the forest, but also in cities.

“We look at an image of a tabby cat feeding her kittens and think, how cute or even a sow feeding her piglets. Yet the human breast has become so sexualised that breastfeeding in public has almost become a criminal act. Resulting in our vulnerable babies being fed, at times, in most unsanitary conditions, risking infection and illness. This must change!”

KENSINGTON GARDENS TREEPHONIA

In 2019, ‘Music for Trees’, an interactive geo-located music app featuring original music written by young composers for trees in Regent’s Park, was launched. The project was initiated by arboriculturist Matt Steinmann. In a continuation of the project, 17 composers from the Royal College of Music have composed works for 190 trees in Kensington Gardens, including 32 unique species. ‘Treephonia: Kensington Gardens’ is an immersive soundscape that invites listeners to engage meaningfully with the trees of Kensington Gardens and seeks to raise public awareness of the importance of the environment and the threats it faces. It is hoped that through Treephonia, listeners will forge stronger relationships with their surrounding environment. Each composer conducted a close observation of their tree over the course of 10 months – from its leaves, flowers and fruits to its complex root systems. They listened to and conversed with their tree and studied its interaction with surrounding trees. Reflecting the harmonious and symbiotic coexistence of the many trees of Kensington Gardens, Treephonia explores not only the unique voice of each tree, but how they vocalise together. Visit the Kensington Gardens click on the website and find our tree, then listen to a composition while there. Open during daytime hours

Standup comedians and poets also take the stage before the musical acts. All the while these performances are recorded in high quality for the artists to use for social media posts.

Underground 1.5 @ Metre Squared

There is an undeniable influence underground scenes have on the mainstream and therefore an urgency to make these scenes more ‘open’ again. As a continuation from our first successful event we’re adding smaller, more affordable pieces as an extension to our voyeuristic and intimate take on London’s underground scenes and offering an antidote to the increasingly homogenised and elitist structures. You’ll be able to view images / paintings / collages of our interpretation of the underground community.

Kensington High Street PINGA - MISHA MILOVANOVICH

Misha Milovanovich is a Belgrade-born artist living and working in London. The artist works across several mediums, from sculpture to painting and live art. Characterised by vivid colour, optical movement and energetic visual cadences, Misha’s visual work fuses a diverse repertoire of images and forms. She often features discarded shards of consumerism - unloved icons of disposability and careless consumption. Misha’s work is often a symphonic abstraction. Her colourful, densely layered works are held in a state of tension between order and chaos, rational structure and spontaneity. She combines depth and surface relief, orchestrating bold contrasts of form, texture and space in her pictures. An intimate colour palette of bodily fluids - red, pink, white, black, yellow and brown - animate the writhing forms and the refracted memories of cartoonish cultural production. A cultural polymath, Misha is constantly engaged in observing society and it’s distortions of desire, lust and attitudes to the body. Traditional techniques have been studied and absorbed and although her work is partly conceptual, it’s execution always reflects these hard won technical abilities.

76

zone 6 – EARL’s COURt

Characterised by a profusion of exuberant colours and shapes, energetic visual cadences, Misha blurs boundaries—between abstraction and figuration, painting and sculpture, flatness and dimensionality, formalism and conceptualism—demonstrating the richness of the middle ground between opposites. In her most recent work, Misha Milovanovich’s unique aesthetics absorbs network of influences with centres around primitive and mythology. These are anthropomorphic creations that exude warmth and humour and perform (nod/homagge) to Miro, Picasso, David Smith, Louise Bourgeois and Noguchi. Her work blends animal shapes and shapes of nature always giving it human quality, that of primeval man that still resides in the cerebellum part of our brain and is lost in the age of a post-truth world that finds itself digitally displaced. Her work relates to human condition and our connection with the natural world and ourselves, yet offers optimism in the face of contemporary absurdity. Everything connects to her biography lived experiences, learned techniques, jokes, memories and eulogies.

Kensington High Street LOOK AT THE SKY AS EVERYTHING IS ALIVE - ADAM BRIDGLAND

The commissioned work for 2023 Art Trail, Look At The Sky As Everything Is Alive is a continuum of a series of works Adam has placed in to landscapes across the United Kingdom. The works create new dialogues and narratives between the text and location. The work will never be the same at any given point, the world, light and seasons around the piece changing throughout the time it is in location, while the text stays constant, a place for the viewer to contemplate and distract from the speed and noise that surrounds them. This installation is made from recycled marine wood, plants and compost. ADAM BRIDGLAND B. 1979, Leicester in England

Since his graduation in 2006, he has exhibited widely in the UK, America, Europe and Asia. The British Museum, the V&A, UBS, Boeing and Debbie Harry are just some of the collectors of Adam’s work. In July 2009 Adam was awarded his first major public art commission by Commissions East. He has since gone to complete a number of important projects, including work for YouTube, Heal’s, Comme Des Garcons, Airnimal bikes, Warchild, Ace Hotel, Soho House, smartlife, Jacuzzi and Eastern Pavilions.

Cadogan is proud to present KCAW Public Art Trail finalists Baker + Barowski, who have developed a new body of work titled ‘Flower Clouds’. These immersive installations hark to the horticultural heritage of Chelsea, from the King’s Road as home to plant nurseries and exotic species in the 18th century to its 1960’s Flower Power, the Coronation and rewilding projects currently being installed by Cadogan in Sloane Street - and of course, the worldfamous Chelsea Flower Show. The artworks reflect inspiration from each location, from edible species planted as part of a trail on Pavilion Road to the ‘Royal’ colour palette being introduced on Sloane Street to transform it into a beautiful green boulevard and Mary Quant’s famous daisies on the King’s Road. As an artistic counterbalance to urban life, Graphic Rewilding creates vast, nature-inspired, attention-grabbing artworks in city spaces. These Flower Cloud sculptural seating artworks are inspired by the rich cultural history of London and encourage people to take a moment, reflect and be engulfed in the super-saturated colours of nature.

ABOUT BAKER + BOROWSKI Catherine Borowski and Lee Baker are the co-founders of SKIP Gallery and Graphic Rewilding. Graphic Rewilding is a counterbalance to the lack of green space in cities. Lee and Catherine create vast, flower-inspired, maximalist, positivity-inducing artworks and immersive environments in oftenoverlooked urban spaces. The vibrant images of nature are set in opposition to the grey concrete jungle, and though these obviously could never provide the same environmental and psychological benefits as real nature, the intention is to inspire people to connect and empathise a little more with the natural world, hopefully mitigating some of the negative effects of a lack of exposure to green space.

Hoopers Court, Knightsbridge DETANGLING MBS - JOSEPHINE CHIME

‘Detangling The MBS’ is a mixed media sculpture a response to the confining narratives and contradicting messages of how women should present themselves. Chime’s practice delves into skewing the dominant notion of aesthetic goals, pulling from ancestral symbolic practices and pictographic messages to inform new female forms that transgress what is socially desirable. Stuffed bulbous and warped forms reflect body parts, they are bound with rope on top of an engraved dark looming comb, speaking on the pressure to control the natural form and rhythms of the human vessel. The hair comb embodies myths and rituals of how people mould and seek to tame what grows from their skin in order to achieve an acceptable idea of beauty or make their own. MBS means mind, body and soul. Detangling The MBS is a call to service oneself, to create a flow of healthy self reflection which may enact change. Detangling The MBS speaks of action, a constant action to become a version of yourself that can recognise the myriad of life’s offerings and self-worth.

Josephine Chime’s practice delves into transgressing ideas of accepted beauty through the deconstruction of the body. The strong cord that connects her work is the visual analysis on the onslaught of female homogeneous images and how technology shapes the vision and ideals of what is desirable. “I see our skin holds the story of the body like etched hieroglyphics, instead of silencing the story my intention is to it is amplify via intricate patterns, bold colours and textured shapes inspired by ancestral rituals and traditions.” comments Chime. ‘Detangling’ draws from the essence of the sculpture Detangling The MBS. MBS stands for mind, body, and soul. Detangling The MBS is a call to service oneself, to create a flow of healthy self-reflection which may enact change. Starting with the self to loosen the knots found in the heart, the muscles, and the psyche, it is a monumental step in feeling free from life’s expectations and societal constraints. Please visit the artist’s website for more details.

The Gallery is a for-hire space dedicated to promoting emerging artists. Our ambition is to create a space that will become a major resource upon which artists, collectors, curators, and the broader artistic community might draw and benefit in the future. Not only are we a hire space giving full flexibility to artists regarding the length of exhibition and number of participating artists, but, we also offer a wealth of additional support. We are delighted to bring together this retrospective of works by artist Jane Phillips. The exhibition features a range of works that demonstrate her ability to capture the essence of nature in all its complexity. Her canvases are alive with

colour and texture, inviting the viewer to explore every detail of the scene before them. Each piece is a reflection of her lifetime of work, a testament to her unwavering dedication to her craft. Catherine Ducker confronts her life and practise in this exhibition of paintings: “My work has been evolving since I left St Martins. My inspiration has always been the land. Life within the landscape. Travel, growing plants and farming have been the roots of much of my work. Endless moments to recreate.” This exhibition brings together a new body of work that expresses Ducker’s love and mastery of colour.

CHELSEA THEATRE Giant Mamas - MAYA SANBAR

Giant Mamas is an outdoor installation created from stories of women living and working in World’s End estate. This project forms part of our annual whole-community creative event. Our experience from last year’s Quilt Patch outdoor installation has shown us that harvesting stories and giving a voice to those who do not often have one has a positive effect on mental health and social cohesion. Pairing our citizens with established artists leads to a formula in which ‘citizen art’ has qualitative impact. The artworks created celebrate the role of women in the community, with the women represented as a set of Giantesses / Goddesses installed on the outside of the theatre and piazza. Inspired by ancient mythology brought to present-day reality, we will create up to 10 figures, measuring from 2m to 4m in height.

The role of the women holding our community together is immense and often undervalued - making them giant mythological beings will underline their strength and power. Each of the giantesses will have a back story created with a professional writer participating in the workshops. These stories will translate into a play with the input of a dramaturge if we are able to gather the funding.

7 Worlds End Place, London SW10 0DR kcaw.co.uk

Installed from 22 June, the beginning of Kensington and Chelsea Art Week, it will form part of the Art Trail and continue into the Kensington and Chelsea Festival which will include many outdoor performances.

22 June to end of August

The form, character and shape of the Giantesses is developed in collaboration with the community in a series of workshops. The women living in working here will feel a sense of ownership of them, as representations of the spirit they embody - without them being identifiable.

Red flush, Peri, bitten white window & a leather soft… Whispered into feather frantic premonition (unsure, tentative)–woman of a sparked idea that burns the writing hand, that severs it at the wrist, like proffer… Peeled fold, woman fragmented, woman, split, like God, In the shared bed, stripping something rawer, shared bed to solitary limbs grown thinking, reaching in the crevice she can’t shrink to fill. Woman secret, waking again. Woman, a thousand, a billion, like God. Because & solely because, warding off that last dying Because & solely– Woman metamorphic in the face of stillness, Capering to the song of her crying out

Aishwarya Gupta - The magic box

I will put into my magic box The ripple of a cobalt Ocean on a summer’s morn The switch of a swift, rapid cheetah in thick foliage The warm unique sensation of the Aurora in Iceland I will put into my magic box The affectionate protective sense of a mother Wolf Or the phosphorescent, beam of light, engulfing the Savannah The last trace of a roaring hurricane I will put into my magic box The first syllables spoken by a newborn baby A tear of immense joy and a taste of sadness An explosion of relief and minuscule wisp of stress I will put into my magic box The last word of a drowning sailor The type of an ivory pearly iceberg The warm, slightly melancholic hug of farewell My box is fashioned from icebergs lava wisps of smoke and lush foliage, covered with far away, are stories, secrets, and stars Its hinges on melted iron and water The magic chest is washed away to the shores with silver whales loiter On hurricane from the sudden seven seas And the secrets will be lost forever....

Aldo - untitled

Humidity evolved into a raindrop the champagne into celebration when it popped the seed you planted a rainforest the body to a machine, the robot back to a human we taught AI to hug the way we do and they crashed us like closed books returning to the shelf we all followed a chance to progress, for a change and our fears became our certainties our prayers our nursery rhymes we overcomplicated, we simplified we even blew it all up at times but we followed through the art of rhymes we tasted euphoria like bitter chocolate the abandon, the faith, the joy of couplets and it all made sense in the end because there was no such thing and couldn’t turn the wind into sand the desert into spring
