WELCOME Welcome to the fifth edition of Kensington + Chelsea Art Week! We celebrate our return with yet another fantastic programme of events hosted by venues and artists in our unique area of London. On the theme of Nourish, we have expanded KCAW Public Art Trail to new locations, including Exhibition Road, South Kensington, with the Great Exhibition Road Festival returning to this iconic street after a two-year pause, and to Sloane Street, where we focus on Chelsea styles. KCAW Poetry Corner and KCAW x Chelsea Windows once again support emerging artists and poets: spot them in windows across the area and follow self-guided trails by downloading the Go Jauntly app. You can also join me on a borough-wide self-guided cycle tour of the art trail. Our Go Jauntly tours also include our favourite food and drink venues – nourishment for soul and body! As always, we offer a range of tools to explore all that KCAW and our participants have to offer: an interactive Culture Map (map.kcaw.co.uk), curated tours on Go Jauntly, our Guide and What’s On calendar. We have added QR codes to every Public Art Trail artwork, with interviews with the creators conducted by Piers Thomson of Portobello Radio, who will also enlighten you on the Art Bus – a four-hour drive along the Art Trail. KCAW began with a public consultation and was founded by a group of volunteering arts industry professionals. Since 2018, the Advisory Board have offered their knowledge, effort, experience, and care for the local community: the board supports all aspects of KCAW and expands year on year. Over 60 volunteers joined KCAW in 2021 and many are returning. Their local knowledge and dedication are what makes our festival amazing. The festival is not-for-profit. We pride ourselves on acting as a stepping stone for artists to enter the public art sector via our annual Open Call, for which over 150 submissions are received. With help from Kensington & Chelsea Council, we have added two extra months to the Art Trail exhibition period. So don’t worry if you are away during the week itself - you can still see the Trail until 31 August. I would especially like to thank our Advisory Board, our Sponsors, the 2022 Art Committee who selected the Art Trail finalists, our incredible KCAW team, and all participating venues, retailers, artists, creators, and sponsors without whose support we would not be able to encourage such an energetic and colourful return. What a treasure trove and packed programme we have for you this year. Enjoy!

KCAW22 HEADLINE PROJECTS Each year, KCAW conceives and delivers an extraordinary array of Headline Projects. For the 2022 edition we have extended the range of public art installations, and bring to the borough new digital projects, curated walking tours and poetry displays for all to enjoy. KCAW brings eleven days of public art festivities across eight designated zones and online, brimming with exclusive events and exhibitions. Follow the Public Art Trail from Sloane Square to Earl’s Court, from Holland Park to Latimer Road, experiencing exclusive content with the interactive Culture Map (map.kcaw.co.uk) and curated self-guided walks with Go Jaunly. Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more about our projects, view the full KCAW programme, and book your place for popular talks and events.

CURATORIAL THEME: NOURISH Every living being is sustained by Nourishment of some kind, whether through consumption of food, photosynthesis or other means. Nourishment can also be intellectual, social and mystical. Nourishment is a form of knowledge – food for the soul as well as food for the body. Food is culture. It unites and divides us. It is sensual. It is gluttonous and indulgent. It is pleasure, spirituality and meditation, pain and boredom. It is fun! In addition to our food-inspired Public Art Trail and events, this year’s KCAW will see the festival collaborate with a range of restaurants, bars and culinary pop-ups.

KCAW X CHELSEA WINDOWS For the third year, KCAW is collaborating with Sloane Stanley to create an exhibition that spans 10 shopfront windows along the iconic King’s Road. Participating stores, restaurants, cafes and more will be displaying ground-breaking artworks by London’s most exciting emerging artists throughout Art Week, curated by Isabella Bonner-Evans. For this year’s edition, the theme of Nourish informs the curator’s approach – she seeks to enrich the High Street with a celebration of culture and creativity, while helping to further the careers of young artists. For this project, retail spaces become pop-up contemporary art galleries and artists have the chance to reach new audiences and show their work in unique locations. The public are invited to discover the up-andcoming artists and enjoy the High Street lit up with creativity. Visit kcaw.co.uk for the full list of installations and to purchase artworks directly from the artists; KCAW charges no commission, with 100% of sales from the artworks going directly to the artists.

ART BUS BY THE GALLERIES ASSOCIATION + PORTOBELLO RADIO 2022 sees the return of the Art Bus, organised by the Galleries Association in partnership with Portobello Radio. Local broadcaster Piers Thompson of Portobello Radio will lead an extraordinary experience of art and performance on a classic Routemaster Bus, guiding passengers through the backstreets of West London, whilst informing them about the rich local history and counterculture. Designed to distil the area’s cultural highlights, the bus tour allows art enthusiasts to connect with local gallery managers and artists. For this Art Week special on Saturday 2nd July, the Art Bus takes visitors around the Public Art Trail locations. This hop on, hop off, four-hour tour is not to be missed! Visit kcaw.co.uk to find out more and book advance tickets.

During KCAW visit Gloire Immortelle, an exhibition of West African photographer Rachidi Bissiriou. Bissiriou’s images are remarkable for their simplicity and a freshness that feels utterly contemporary. Shot against plain backdrops, or in the town where they lived, Bissiriou’s subjects posed wearing their own clothing, which could range from traditional West African attire such as grand boubou, head wraps and Ankara agbadas, to more modern styles that nodded to the explosion in youth culture at the time.

Graffik does not cater purely for the collector, they open up their doors by offering graffiti workshops that allow anyone to submerge themselves in this amazing culture. The Gallery’s expertise is down to its insight and being at the forefront of this industry: they were the first street art gallery in West London and the first to bring graffiti workshops to the world.

POETRY 4 GRENFELL - VOICES FROM DA GROVE AND LATIMER

14

Poetry 4 Grenfell - Voices from da Grove and Latimer is a tribute to all affected by the fire. The creative product of the ongoing workshops that Kamitan Arts had been running as an immediate response to the tragedy. A self-published book, it includes the voices of local residents, the bereaved, the survivors and the empathetic wider community, from the ages of 3-77 years. It has been a creative means to amplify the voices and messages of our traumatised community. Kamitan Arts raises funds through sales of the book as a means to sustain their free creative healing projects in the community, post-Grenfell.

CHARLOTTE COLBERT CELLULAR AMULET

The amulet piece was designed during lockdown as an interactive and protective sculpture. Inspired by the shape of white blood cells, which form the immune system, it protects: a talisman holding an apotropaic function. Its scale and playful reflective surface remind us that ultimate protection is born of play and togetherness. Language, psychoanalysis, and socio-political constructions of gender and identity are at the heart of Colbert’s practice. Spanning film, photography, ceramics and sculpture, she questions narrative structures and storytelling, weaving surreal and fantastical mise-enscenes in a documentarian approach to characters. Fiction becomes a way to approach the truth and the most intimate emotions. Straddling the fine line between fine art and film, Colbert’s films have strong philosophical undertones and play on questions of time, space and identity. They are often dark and surreal with a hint of comedy.

KIPLING HUNT HOME GROWN IN KENSINGTON + CHELSEA

This artwork was created especially for Kensington Memorial Park, to be temporarily exhibited on the side of a shed currently used for storage by the Kensington Dragons football team. The paintings feature four examples of cut plants, homegrown from a private garden, in recycled jam jars filled with water. As the artist comments: “These four panels are painted and primed in acrylic, with the intention of being seen from a distance by pedestrians walking in the Kensington Memorial Gardens. They might also be viewed from the no.7 or 316 bus.” This artwork came from a previous incarnation Hunt created in 2020, when she turned the exterior of her house into an installation during the first lockdown, under the title ‘The Healing Powers of Flowers’. The idea came about during the pandemic, when she, like so many other people, had taken refuge in outdoor spaces and gardens filled with nature. It was not only liberating, but also

educational – it taught the artist the meaning of time, patience, how plants take their form and shape, and what nourishment they need to survive. Kipling Hunt proposed to repeat this experience in the Kensington Memorial Park by showing flowering plants, vegetables or fruit tree blossom grown from her own garden. “I was born in Holland Road, and was adopted nine days after my birth through the agency the Crusade of Rescue (now the Catholic Children’s Society), which is based in St Charles Square W10. I moved away with my adopted parents to live in Fulham. Years later I returned to the area when I bought a shared ownership flat with the aid of the Notting Hill Housing Association, located at St. Mark’s Road. I feel I am homegrown in Kensington and Chelsea and now I want to give back something which is close to my heart - hope in the future of all living things if we look after them properly.” Kipling Hunt

BIRUNGI KAWOOYA & BOKANI TSHIDZU REFLECTION AND REST

KCAW, the curator Bolanle Tajudeen - also the founder of Black Blossoms School of Art - and artists Birungi Kawooya and Bokani Tshidzu are working together to create a mural which will visually present ways of Rest, Reflection and Wellness for womxn of colour. Black womxn are traditionally underrepresented in public art in London, with Statues for Equality estimating that only 6% of the capital’s statues depict (non-royal) womxn, and only a tiny fraction of these represent womxn of colour. Indeed, Art UK estimates that London boasts more statues of animals than it does of womxn and people of colour. The same can be said about non-permanent public art interventions. Further to this, Kensington and Chelsea is a borough filled with a plethora of cultural landmarks and venues; however, the imaginations, thoughts and contributions of communities of colour are often absent or invisible. We want the impact of the mural to be the creation of a space that tells different narratives within our very diverse area.

20

Curator Bolanle Tajudeen, who has intensively researched and taught about the Black Art Movement in Britain, sees the mural as a continuity of art interventions across the city by Black and Brown artists who London’s governing body has historically supported. Particularly she wants to highlight the history of funding given to Black and Brown artists and its discourse within visual arts, and the significant similarities and differences that can be seen between what happened in the 1980s and now. As Black British art historian Eddie Chambers states, “their patronage became dubious and counterproductive when they took it upon themselves to become initiators rather than project funders.” This project seeks to address that past misstep, giving Black artists autonomy to create works that resonate with their community in an authentic way. Image shows Hiplet by Birungi Kawooya.

NOTTING HILL ARTS CLUB NOTTING HILL WALK OF FAME

Notting Hill Arts Club and Kensington + Chelsea Art Week present the Notting Hill Walk of Fame, a temporary Public Art installation celebrating the music icons who made their first appearances at the iconic music venue. West is Best, or so they say.. And they would be right.. The Clash, Damon Albarn, Lily Allen, The Who and The Rolling Stones have all called West London their home at some point and most of them still do. At the cultural epicentre of this part of the Capital is Notting Hill Gate and at its heart lies one of the most iconic music venues in the world, Notting Hill Arts Club, which boasts a long legacy of breaking some of our most beloved pop icons into the mainstream.

One, The Killers and more. For many of these artists their appearance at the club was at the very start of their career, highlighting the venue’s longstanding commitment to championing new talent and continuing the rich musical legacy of the area. Further cementing this ethos, the club is home to Notting Hill Academy of Music and Notting Hill Arts Club Recordings, educating and supporting the next generation of industry execs and music artists.

GAVIN TURK THE SPIRIT OF PAINTING

Mysteriously landing on the cupola of The Coronet Theatre during the quiet of a global pandemic, a lonely figure poses in the adlocutio stance of an Emperor in ancient Rome addressing his troops. Contra to this heroic posture, this figure portrays the artist in his studio overalls painting the sky with a paintbrush instead of a sword, palette as shield. Originally designed to have a sculpture of Mercury on the roof of the theatre, now the messenger God of commerce has become a prophetic painter of our current hubris. ‘I imagine being in the sky, I thought of an oversized paint splattered stepladder on the roof, to help a giant decorator to paint the clouds or change the earth’s light bulb (sun).’ Gavin Turk Gavin Turk uses art historical referencing as a material to question art itself. This figure takes its form from Alfred Drury’s sculpture of Sir Joshua Reynolds, a familiar iconic statue grand-standing in the

32

courtyard of the Royal Academy. Where the Drury sculpture portrays the first president of the RA as a member of the establishment, this contemporary classic presents the artist as artisanal workman. At this time of fierce debate around public sculpture this portrait brings a new provocation to the conversation. The Coronet Theatre presents an eclectic programme of theatre, film, dance, music, poetry and visual art in its intimate 195-seat main auditorium and 90 -seat studio space, re-named The Print Room in recognition of the company’s previous home at a nearby print works. A fusion of multi-disciplinary international and UK work, The Coronet Theatre stages a mix of new productions, commissions and visiting artists, including a number of UK and world premieres. We offer memorable and often unexpected experiences for our audiences, while supporting established artists and nurturing new talent.

DAVID BÖHM & JIRÍ FRANTA WHO TELLS WHOM ABOUT WHAT

An outdoor, large scale photo series of imaginary city models by leading Czech artists David Böhm & Jiří Franta reflecting on the meaning of borders, neighbourhood, and how indivisible the current world is. Inspired by the exquisitely staged narrative paintings by artists such as Pieter Brueghel, the artists’ tableaux will be displayed in an outdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy in London on busy Bayswater Road in the Notting Hill Gate area. Using imaginary city models with staged micro-stories, David Böhm & Jiří Franta draw on current social and political issues to explore the city not only as a place of neighbourhood and coexistence but also as a crowded and fragmented world, in which it is necessary to reconsider some of the basic ideas. Does the concept of nations still make sense? Isn’t it possible to organise the planet better? Who sustains whom? And can we find a way to stop living at the expense of future generations?

Awarded the Illustrator of the Year Prize at the Czech Grand Designs 2022 for their work on Osamu Okamura’s book City for Everyone; A Manual of Urbanism for Beginners, David Böhm and Jiří Franta present in this project for the KCAW Public Art Trail a distinctive perception of the world and their views on society, politics, and the mass media, while playing with multiple meanings and irony. Using the motif of the ‘ fence’, they unite the outdoor exhibition on the fence with the indoor space of the Czech Centre’s gallery, where the actual models they meticulously built are on display, while referencing relations with our neighbours and borders beyond which we are not welcome.

subtle motion of souls. The details of the women in such conscious gestures and unwitting movement are the reflections of beauty or the mysterious beauty which is distinctively revealed by the sudden yet exquisite brushstrokes; combined with the intimate narratives between the female bodies.

48-50 Kensington Church Street, W8 4DG hjartgallery.com

HJ Art Gallery is delighted to announce the exhibition of some magnificent new works by the Italian artist, Stefano Puleo.

As a painter, and with the mystery that is part of being a painter, he returns everything that he sees and feels with a confident brushstroke and a specific colour, possessing energy, eros, and luminosity that are the products of a re-elaboration of life and what is visible in the depths of ego, using creative pulsations that come from memory, the present and vision. The ethereal colour, so sanguine and sensual, he uses to construct his female figures certainly does not reach out of the blue. This dawn-like quality amplifies the complexity and softness of the female body, and the golden aura creates this flamboyant joy that is filled with love, intimacy and passion.

23 June - 10 July

Stefano Puleo is by no means an illustrator. That world of human figures in action, his drawing, has been carried around for ages: it is his world. The world gives him a human identity in a beautiful time when it is so easy for us to lose our identity. The painter recognises himself by drawing his human types, men and women. Through the prominent lines, without hesitation, defining the exact mood, sometimes implicitly, while he is swirling and following the

KONSTANTIN BENKOVICH THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD

The artist reinterprets the established religious iconography of the right hand of God, widespread in Jewish and Christian iconography from Late Antiquity to early Middle Ages as a symbol of God’s intervention in the affairs of the world. It also served as symbol of divine omnipotence. In Dura Europos Synagogue mosaics, the right hand of God signified the divine acceptance of the offered sacrifice or even the voice of God himself. It was also a place of refuge for the righteous, the persecuted and those threatened by their enemies.

out judgement and protects those suffering from injustice. According to the artist, ‘Today, as never before, humanity is on the brink of the third world war and the nuclear apocalypse is looming close, threatening self-annihilation. It becomes our personal duty to read the sign and prevent the approaching catastrophe.’ The project runs as part of the Bird & Carrot art residency initiative.

The sculpture represents the right hand of God, typically shown reaching down from the sky. However, here the artist conflates the traditional right hand iconography symbolising mercy, presence, omnipotence and judgment of God, with apocalyptic imagery of the Giving of the Seven Bowls of Wrath (Revelation, 16: 1-16). In this way, the benevolent right hand of God also becomes the hand of judgment for the evil-doers. It metes

SOKARI DOUGLAS CAMP CBE HOMAGE TO CARNIVAL

The artist Sokari Douglas Camp CBE has created these new sculptures, especially for display at Kensington and Chelsea Art Week Art Trail, in front of The Design Museum, where her work once stood when it was the Commonwealth Institute. The institute previously occupied the building (behind where the sculpture is sited) before it was renovated and The Design Museum moved in.

of the plantations where some of the slaves would have worked. Sugarcane plantations, tea plantations. The luxury of drinking tea is practiced and has been adopted as part of English culture, Lipton’s tea, Yorkshire tea, Tetley PG tips. If you are shocked and need calming, you are given tea... which is nourishing. Tying these historical connections to contemporary life is an element of my practice.”

Sokari Douglas Camp comments: “I came across some beautiful watercolours by Isaac Mendes Belisario on the internet of Carnival characters and was struck that they looked like West African Masquerades. I made some sculptures of Nigerian Masquerades, men dressing as spirits early on in my career. Now, John Canoe is a character that came about because slaves were given the chance to celebrate for a day. The Notting Hill Carnival has nourished London, especially the international communities in the city. I am hoping that display of Carnival characters will lift spirits; the format, dressing up as a character, is very contemporary, Batman Spiderman.... making an African character with Western clothing. I was attracted to the image of a colonial house with shutters and trimmed bushes. This reminded me

Two dancers tussling, twisting a flag between them dressed as John Canoe characters. Telling a story with headdresses decorated with logos of tea companies (which are beautiful in their design). To have an example of Carnival parked on Kensington High Street or any other street where vehicles can park provides an unexpected moment for people to savour.

While the Notting Hill Carnival has been cancelled for the past two years because of the pandemic, the vital energy of these dancing figures looks forward to a time – soon to come – when the joyful revels return, and the entire community unites in celebrating together again our collective powers of resilience. The artist chose to display Homage to Carnival on a Carnival float to reference the transient nature of the carnival festivities.

The exhibition titled ‘What A Wonderful World’, based on the song made famous by Louis Armstrong, will continue throughout the hotel, depicting LUAP’s journey into sentimental large-scale paintings, filled with his ionic bear in forests next to fires and high up on the glacier, he continues to challenge our understanding of mental health. LISE BOUSSIERE ROLLER COASTER

During Art Week, ‘Roller Coaster’ by Lise Bouissiere will be exhibited in the Brompon Cemetery chapel. Inspired by London’s cityscape and the cranes constantly overhanging the city like giant insects, the sculpture is made of reused straws that have been collected in the city’s bars, clubs, coffee shops and tea houses; these plastic pieces of rubbish, which nature cannot digest, are transformed into blooming sculptures. Added to this architectural inspiration, the composition suggests a wide range of other interpretations. From shape and colour harmonies, to the reuse of material and the evolution that the straw is going through today, as a result of the environmentally-related discussion. In addition, the people who used the straws left their DNA fingerprints behind. Roller Coaster has been exhibited in the Royal Society of Sculptors Summer Show (2021), The Smallest Gallery in Soho (2019), Gerald Moore Gallery (2020), Aora space (2022) and Venice art land (2019).

AZARRA AMOY STARS OF EARL’S COURT

KCAW is collaborating with local artist Azarra Amoy to transform a meanwhile space on Warwick Road (owned by The Earls Court Development Company) opposite Earl’s Court tube station. The artist’s takeover is made up of a huge 39-metre mural of a series of portraits based on an open call by KCAW to find out who the artistic ‘stars’ working and living in Earl’s Court are, both today and in the past. The results were surprising. They include visual artists, important groups once frequenting the famous Troubadour music venue such as the Black Panthers and Bob Dylan, but also perhaps less obvious personalities who are nonetheless equally important and have become part of the creative fabric of this area today.

style, peppering the artwork with objects and themes linked to the area and the personalities themselves. Azarra Amoy is a London-based artist working predominately with traditional and mixed media. Born and raised in Earl’s Court, she is already a star in the contemporary art scene. Her work recently graced the MT V Awards and her largest mural to date has just appeared at Saatchi Gallery.

RICHARD MACKNESS DOMUS

Cities nourish the soul. Here we gather to exchange ideas, trade and socialise; to draw on the power of the city and to contribute. ‘Domus’ takes the form of a giant plastic food package, crushed and discarded; the hollow shell has an interior space with the feel of a shelter. Lying on its side on the ground like a fallen statue, its smooth, sensuous curves echo the drapery of classical civic sculpture, yet while appearing soft are formed in hard grey concrete, the quintessential urban material. ‘Domus’ quotes from and subverts the material language of the city and its architecture. The artist, Richard Mackness, often deals with opposites: Ancient / Modern, Worthless / Priceless - a way of questioning assumptions. The discarded food package, ubiquitous in the urban environment sits at a point of contrast in city living; how to shelter and sustain the body while nourishing the self. As a child, river clay from the banks of the Ouse near the artist’s home near York allowed the Roman soldiers, animals and monsters imaginings to find form in his mind. Inspiration abounds in York, an ancient city with a large population of statues, figures and grotesques

72

ZONE 6 – EARL’S COURT

to fascinate and delight. So it was a natural decision for Mackness, at the age of 16 to head to the city’s Art School; there he learned that creativity comes in many forms, and that one should remain true to one’s instincts. Since then, he has pursued his own work, helped others with theirs (as a sculpture tutor and as a commercial sculptor working for more established artists) and worked with museums, companies and corporations as a maker and in design. Mackness believes the imprint of touch, and the human actions recorded in an object are important. He continues: “Objects we encounter in the world are experienced through our physical being - we estimate, measure, and reveal the world to ourselves as a reflection of the body we possess. And for me, sculpture is a particular discipline; it is a story told in form, mass and surface. It exists in space, sharing the world with every other thing, like a human being.”

MAYA SANBAR QUILT PATCH

In partnership with the Chelsea Theatre and World’s End Estate, QUILT PATCH is an installation made of recycled fabrics celebrating human expressions of happiness. Taking the form of stories quilted onto flags, it hangs from the theatre’s exterior and surrounds the piazza from June to August 2022.

Artist: Maya Sanbar

Made collaboratively in crossgenerational sewing and storytelling workshops, this artwork is a reminder of the creativity, shared wisdom, unique identities, and resonant voices of the participating communities based on the theme “What Does Happiness Mean to You?”. From a bar of chocolate to holding hands, stories of joy are incorporated into individual quilt blocks that are used to create the flags and make up the installation. Together, these expressions of happiness remind us of the things that bring us joy, specific to individual identities and lived experiences.
