A LETTER FROM YOUR dne HI SUNS!

Is it already time to go back to school? I feel as if summer began just yesterday... For many of us, August has suddenly become the month where we say goodbye to our summer and say hello to another year and another term. Although summer’s coming to a close, focus on how you’re going to make this school year great. Whether you’re starting high school and you’re a little scared, or you’re a big bad senior, this year will have something to offer; Key Club will have something to offer to you this year. So when school starts, go out with a big smile and meet some new people! Keep volunteering, pay your dues, and work hard to fundraise. Make big plans while it’s still summer and you have time, and carry them out throughout the year. Look back on your Key Club-filled summer by looking through this newsletter and the ones before it. In this issue, you’ll find recaps on ICON 2015, Officer Training Conference, and more. Also, look forward to the events we have in store in August! Always stay sunny, suns.

A LETTER FROM YOUR ltg HELLO DIVISION 30 SOUTH!

I hope that you all have had an amazing summer so far and have had a productive one full of volunteering, serving, and smiling. Summer is a perfect time to volunteer and with summer coming to a close and school is coming closer, this is the perfect time to begin volunteering so that you can get a head start on your hour requirement. You all have made me so proud to serve Division 30 South through the amazing service, participation, and smiles that you all have been doing through this term. We have gone above and beyond and broke barriers that we have never done before. We have already served OVER 10,000 SERVICE HOURS! That is so amazing and it could not have been done without you all. We are going above and beyond and this is honestly all because of you. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to serve so much. Without you, the presidents wouldn’t have been as inspired to work as hard. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to work as hard as I did. Everything that has been done so far is because of you. Thank you Suns for making this term so far so amazing and let’s end this with a bang. I hope that you all have had an amazing time at Beach Boomba and I just hope that I can continue to serve as much as I do for you all. Because summer does have so much more free time, I really want to get to know you! Feel free to message, text, or call me! I really want to get to know everyone in Division 30 South! Until next time Suns!

CONCERTS on the green

MATTHEW PHAN || OXFORD ACADEMY Summer. The time of year when everyone’s happy, there’s music playing everywhere, and people are serving delicious hamburgers and hot dogs. There’s only one service event that could handle all of this goodness: Concert on the Green. There, Key Club volunteers had a great time working with our fellow Kiwanians to serve everyone at the concert. It was a great event, giving the volunteers there ample time to mingle and have fun. The best part, however, was the fact that we got a free meal for volunteering there. It’s pretty much dinner and a show. What better way to serve the community that to be rewarded for it with a big, juicy hamburger? I mean I’m not saying that volunteering is all about the rewards, but a free burger is a pretty good incentive. The best part is, Concert on the Green is basically a weekly event throughout the summer! Why volunteer at an event once when you have the opportunity to do it throughout the whole summer? The event is pretty fun because you get to talk to the people of Kiwanis there, and it’s a great experience because they’re all so friendly and knowledgeable. So if you have the time this summer, you should definitely check out Concert on the Green! Keep on shining Suns!

training conference

FRANCES LEE || WHITNEY Officer Training Conference - the one day where officers from all over Region 3 congregate in a single building to learn about new ways to IMPROVE THE EXPERIENCE of our amazing Key Club members and to better our home, school, and community. Not only do we bond as the rainbow region, but we learn novel methods to implement in our respective clubs from our lieutenant governors. At this conference, we truly recognize and remember why we applied or were elected for our positions: we truly to help IMPROVE KEY CLUB and to provide for those in our community. Oftentimes, we as officers tend WHY to forget the true intention of our titles and why we applied or it’s imperative were elected for that we take our jobs and the leadership our positions: to that we exercise seriously. Every help day is another day with so & much POTENTIAL for us to make TO PROVIDE our members’ experience for those in our so much more than “just another service organization” in community.” this unforgettable ohana called Key Club. OTC taught us more than several new ways to help ourselves grow as leaders and to aid our members when they need us the most; it also helped us make new friends and truly exercise our FOUR CORE VALUES: leadership, inclusiveness, character building, and caring. As we attended the different workshops and heard many words of wisdom, we saw LEADERSHIP AND CHARACTER BUILDING in action and as the hardworking, dedicated officers helped each other by providing their respective insight, we saw the INCLUSIVENESS AND CARING (our way of life) that Key Clubbers have been and always will be known for.

LINDA LE || WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL

the month: How Will You Stay Active? We had an open mind session about The June Division Council it and the members basically said that Meeting took place on June 13th, to be able stay active they would 2015. It began at 1:00 PM and lasted check up for updates through social until 3:00 PM. It took place at Veteran’s media and go to volunteer events. This Park. This event/potluck was organized made me think about what Western by John Hoang to celebrate the end Key Club was doing, and I guess we were already one step ahead! of the school year! After the meeting was finally Key Clubbers of Division 30 South gathered together to this very adjourned, we were split into different event. I saw many new faces and groups by whatever number was on the plate we received. In many old faces in our groups we played an ice which I’ve recognized I was lucky breaker where we all grab a from other volunteer events. I was really enough to person hand (each hand had have someone different happy to see many of make NEW to from your other hand) and the friends I’ve made from had to untangle each other past events. Although FRIENDS & there wasn’t that many BOND with without breaking until we were in a circle. For the group Key Clubbers at this them along I was in it did not take awhile event, I was lucky enough for us to figure it out, because to make new friends and the way as we were all coorparting and bond with them along the well.” communicating! Then, once way as well. As everything was getting settled John we were done it was potluck time! Finally, we were able to sit had finally gathered everyone up, so down and enjoy our food. In the group he could start the meeting. During the that I was sitting with were people meeting, John talked about the old business which was about the May from Kennedy High School, Loara High DCM (The AMAYzing Book Doctors) School, Magnolia High School, and and the OC Visions walk. He also Oxford Academy. Although it sounds talked about the new businesses. like the whole Division was bonding From one of the new updates one of together, we weren’t. I was pretty our club member was recognized as bummed that after we all got our food member of the month for Division 30 everyone just seemed to disperse and South! That member was Mia Urtez. did their own thing. I wish there could Even though she joined Key Club have been more ice breakers or about a month before; she had shown activities and maybe even a service so much excitement and enthusiasm project! But to sum up my experience for Key Club. Moving on from that, with my very first DCM this term, it was John, introduced to us the topic of less than what I expected. At the same time I did enjoy being there.

Did you know that 250 million kids lack basic education? Not 25, 250, or 250,000. 250 million kids. That’s a lot of children who are unable to reach their full potential because of something that they cannot control-the lack of accessible education in their countries. Help make education a reality for these kids! Get involved: -Try and start a leadership council or a PoP Club! Both of these will help greatly in advocating for education. -Raise money to build a school, to fund a scholarship, to help create health programs to keep kids healthy, or to train a teacher.
