01 | EDITOR'S NOTE

What’s Up Sunnies, I hope that you are all making the most of your summers so far and staying extra hydrated under the shining sun. As the first quarter comes to a close, it makes me realize how fast time is going by. By the time that you all read this, hopefully our first in-person DCM has occurred. Nothing makes me happier than to physically see the social interactions between members, a part of Key Club that I’ve genuinely missed. Without a doubt, one of my most memorable events in my first year as a Key Clubber has got to be Beach Boomba. With the entire region coming together at Huntington Beach, everyone is prepared for a day filled with icebreakers, games, and meeting people all over the region. If you don’t know already, our region consists of 7 divisions, which are Division 4 Central, Division 4 East, Division 4 North, Division 4 South, Division 4 West, Division 30 North, and ourselves, Division 30 South. Overall, I hope that you make the MOST of your Key Club journey by coming out to these events because I definitely don’t regret it at all. 😁 SUN-cerely,

chri ina nguyen

SPOTLIGHT ON

SERVICE what is the spotlight on service program?

The CNH Spotlight on Service Program (SOSP) was created by the Service Projects Committee to promote District and International Initiatives as well as to encourage active participation with organizations and initiatives. Monthly guides include tips and ideas on how clubs can complete the monthly service initiatives. The program also gives clubs the opportunity to showcase their unique service projects that positively impact their home, school, and community. The Spotlight on Service Program would love to receive project submissions from the District to showcase projects from the previous month in the District Newsletter. august: children’s education

Since 1946, Key Club International has encouraged members to focus on Major Emphasis— “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” We must provide children with the education they need to ensure that kids all around the world have a great future awaiting them. During the month of August, we should remember to focus on increasing access to quality education for all children.

05 | SPLASHING INTO SERVICE: OCEAN HERO

splashing into service: Throughout June 1-20, our division held an OceanHero service event! The volunteer organization allows millions around the world to turn the everyday action of searching on the web into a volunteer opportunity to fight against ocean pollution. They inform their users about various ocean facts such as how plastic is predicted to quadruple by 2040, and how pollution negatively affects between 700-1200 species. Volunteers were able to download the Chrome extension over the course of the activity and together, we were able to serve a total of 388.5 hours throughout! Thank you to everyone who was able to participate!

07 | ARTICLE: OFFICER TRAINING CONFERENCE

r e c a p In order to provide necessary leadership skills and training for the new officers of Region 3, Officer Training Conference was hosted on Saturday June 19th. Since COVID circumstances have still yet to completely calm down, the conference was hosted online under the alias, Training is Magic. There were different breakout rooms on Zoom for the various Lieutenant Governors to teach their specialized lessons. For the first session of workshops (10:45 A.M-11:30 A.M.), the options were for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, and Key Club 101. In the Vice Presidents Room, D04W Lt. Governor Diane Dao and D04S Lt. Governor Jessica Nguyen emphasized the flexibility and importance of the role. Each home club has its own unique needs that correspond directly with the response done by the VPs. Regardless of role, it is imminent to delegate tasks to support your president to the best of your ability. VPs should familiarize themselves with the tasks of their president on a week-to-week basis. The main goal of a vice president is to minimize the work for their president, so it is vital to hold other board members accountable. There are times where circumstances need leniency, but without accountability, the club won't be able to continuously progress. Another attendee, Jacqueline Lee (10), said, “I learned more than I thought I would. Everything from the length of the workshop to the content was worth it as I learned how to successfully build connections with my members and build my own focus." Both Diane and Jessica finally emphasized acting as a role model to both members and their board; vice presidents can do anything as long as it progresses the club. Another session was held after lunch with broader topics varying from leadership, connections, fundraising, public speaking, and service project ideas. Personally, I wished to learn more about fundraising from D30N Lt. Governor Cassandra Flandre-Nguyen and D04C Lt. Governor Katie Nam. Something that came as a revelation to many participants was the vocabulary required to fundraise. While staying safekey is already a standard held in Key Club, terms such as “buy”, “sell”, and “merchandise” cannot be used in terms of fundraising. Donating towards any cause is desirable, but Key Club International’s preferred charities for this term are Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), March of Dimes, and Children’s Miracle Network. Regardless of the situation, fundraising with different approaches such as game tournaments, boba, and grams can always provide small incentives for members to participate. Being consistent and forming bonds with the Kiwanis Club can greatly increase funds to spend on club improvement! As I only attended those two workshops, I cannot attest for the rest, but some officers on my board reached out later to share what they had learned from other workshops. Not only were there presentations from the LTGs, but there were also conversations between others from different districts. All officers were able to clearly educate themselves and come back with knowledge to share!

who are the

KIWANIS? Most of you have probably heard the word Kiwanis, but don’t know who these people truly are. Some pronounce the word as “Kiwanese” and others know they have some relation to Key Club, but these people are the ones who allow Key Club to be as amazing as it is. The Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world by dedicating more than 18.5 million hours to survive and raising over $100 million for a variety of causes. Some of the Kiwanis organizations provide opportunities for Key Club members, and in our case, the La Palma Kiwanis sponsor our amazing Whitney Key Club. With their continuous help, we have been able to succeed as a club. They always love to participate in our fundraisers, they aid in giving us ideas, and without their help, we wouldn’t be the club we are today. Since they assist our club so much, we should show our appreciation by going out to events with them as members and officers. One of the first annual events where you can meet the La Palma Kiwanis is the Kiwanisgiving event. Each year, Whitney Key Club and John F. Kennedy Key Club partner and hold an event where members are able to bond with the Kiwanis and show their appreciation for them. Usually, this event is during Thanksgiving time, so make sure to be on the lookout for that! You will be able to play games with the Kiwanis, do service, and eat remarkable food, so I can’t wait to see you all at the Kiwanisgiving this year, which will hopefully be in person. Another monthly event you can go to is the Kiwanis DCMs. Unfortunately, in July, there isn’t a Kiwanis DCM planned, but these DCMs are a great way to see the Kiwanis’ work ethic in action. They discuss updates within the different clubs, and it shows how much the Kiwanis care about each and every Key Club. To join these DCM’s, they will usually be publicized during the regular DCM’s, so make sure to be on the lookout for the next Kiwanis DCM! Lastly, there are Kiwanis meetings each month with the La Palma Kiwanis where we are able to discuss updates within our club and see the work and progress of the Kiwanis club. Although this event isn’t open to members as of now, it may be open to you all during the upcoming months, so make sure to check your emails regularly about any updates. Plus, attending Kiwanis Family events can aid you in the Member Recognition Program as this is one section that could help you receive recognition during DCON. Overall, the Kiwanis are wholehearted and amazing people that truly put all their efforts into supporting our clubs, so I hope to see you all go out to as many Kiwanis events as you can in order to show your appreciation towards them!

OXFORD KEY CLUB

PRESIDENT’S PROFILE name: LYDIA LEE school: OXFORD KEY CLUB class: 2022 Hello suns! My name is Lydia Lee and I'm absolutely excited to serve as your OAKC president :D I hope to increase your love and passion for Key Club as the term progresses as well. Make sure to say hi at our next DCM or social!!

- fun facts -

1. I know how to solve the Rubik’s Cube 2. I go to Oxford 3. I am a part of Key Club

what made you want to be president? I wanted to become President because I met so many friends and people that I truly treasure and love. I wanted to make sure that other students were able to experience the same happiness that Key Club was able to provide for me!

when was your key club moment?

My Key Club moment was HOPE Food Distribution. Contrary to popular belief, I am a very social person with few fears in terms of socializing. I met some of my favorite people at HOPE Food Distribution because I waved and said “hi” to every single person I wanted to get closer with. Even if I didn’t know their names, grade, or who they even were.

why did you join key club? I joined Key Club because some stranger came up to my brother while we were at Taco Bell and asked if he was in Key Club at Oxford because he looked familiar. It seemed like a fun and social club which fit my vibes, so I decided to join.

what do you love most about your club? I love how dedicated everyone is. Although our members generally became known as “that Key Clubber”, it’s because they’re dedicated and passionate for Key Club. Attending that one event truly motivated them to attend even more, hence their nickname and entire personality becoming “Key Club”.

what are your goals for the 2021-2022 term?

My goal is for every member to attend at least one event, and for that event to inspire them to attend even more. Whether it’s due to making new friends or just having a blast volunteering, I hope it becomes their motivation to become more involved within Key Club.

OXFORD KEY CLUB snapshot

Solely in June, OAKC served over 686 service hours due to the many in-person service projects we have while also continuing to host online service projects. Some of these projects include HOPE Food Distribution, Riverbed Farms, Uplift Charity Food Bank, and more! We've hosted a Krispy Kreme fundraiser as well as an online social with John F. Kennedy Key Club. Furthermore, we have a beach social planned with Western Key Club for late July. We are currently planning a very fun in-person social with Savanna and Gretchen Whitney Key Club for August as well as selling Krispy Kreme donuts during August DCM. Furthermore, we have many food banks and service projects lined up for August.
