A LETTER FROM YOUR dne Hi suns!

School has begun! I know you’ve been busy with the onslought of school; we’re back in the season of test taking, doing homework, playing sports, participating in clubs, and other things that fill our day. However, don’t forget an important part that’s vital for the suvival of Key Club–the members. You won’t be able to have a club without members, so try your best to recruit a friend or two. Club Rush (or whatever your school calls the time of the year where people can join clubs) is coming up, and you want to look your best to represent the organization you serve. Reach out to both underclassmen and upperclassmen to show them what Key Club’s all about! In this issue, you’ll be able to recap on the summer (it seems so long ago!), look forward to future events, and learn new way to increase membership. Good luck for in this school year, suns! A LETTER FROM YOUR ltg Hello Division 30 South!

I hope that you all have had a nice transition back into school and I know that this only means that there will be even more time for us to spend together now that school is back. I know it may start off as sluggish but please hang in there Suns! I believe in you all and I know that you all can make an amazing difference if you stay diligent and on top of your work! Please don’t be stressed and if you ever need a reliever, I believe the best way to relieve yourself is through volunteering! School is starting and that means we will all begin to get busy with homework and school but that doesn’t mean Key Club stops either! Keep on pushing through suns! I believe in everything that we have done and it just shows it through the amount of service that has been done throughout these first 5 months of our term! Remember our goal of 30,000 hours? We’re at about 14,000 hours already! It has only been 5 months into our term and we’re almost halfway there! Suns without your service and dedication to the community, we wouldn’t have been able to do as well as we have done. Thank you Division 30 South for such an amazing term so far and giving me the opportunity to serve alongside you all. You all have made me happier than I have ever been in my life and I know that each step of the way, we are going to make a legacy. The legacy where it’s not about me. Not about you. It’s about all of us working together. Coming together as one ohana to do service. Thank you Division 30 South and please keep up the amazing service. Until next time Suns!

CONCERTS

on the green

ALVIN HUA || OXFORD ACADEMY

Despite the grueling onslaught of SAT homework and the constantly looming idea of summer homework, I have still been able to find a way to release my stress. Every week, at the Concert on the Green, I serve with the people of Kiwanis, as well as with like-minded individuals in the hopes of contributing towards a greater cause. Through the various Concerts throughout the summer, I have been able to build a closer bond with the Cypress Community, as well as with various Kiwanis members. Together, we are able to experience the building of a close community and the growth of a tradition that will last long after my years here at Key Club. This continuation of tradition speaks not only for the longevity of Key Club, but for the longevity of a tight community and a close relationship between the members of the community. Community service is an excellent way to continue one’s love for the community and foster a growing bond between those who wish to enjoy the presence of a warm, loving community. A tight bond with the community gives people a place among others, and allows them to form connections with caring people. That’s what Key Club has given me, not just through this event, but through the entire Key Club experience. That is why, with all of my heart, I choose to remain grateful for all that this club has given me.

JULY DCM;

beach boomba

J CRUZ SAUCEDO || JOHN F. KENNEDY The most anticipated summer regional event of the term was a success! On the 25th of July the annual Beach Boomba was held at Huntington Beach which invited all Region 3 Key Clubbers to come on out and have fun in the SUN. Beach Boomba was one of the very first events I attended last year when I joined Key Club. I remember my experience very clearly because it was then when I found my passion for Key Club and knew I wanted to become more involved. Seeing everyone bursting with Key Club spirit at the event, made me want to be the same way. So you can imagine my excitement when I went back to where it all started

for me, and my expectations were met and surpassed. To kick off Beach Boomba, the Region 3 LTG’s set up icebreakers that kept us laughing and entertained the whole time. Afterwards, we got the opportunity to enjoy the beach and many of us went down to the water to swim in the waves. Our July DCM was held some time later and then came LTG pie in the face, which I do admit was really hilarious. Our summer event ended with a blast with the water balloon war where my friends decided to betray me and attack me all at once. My second Beach Boomba was just as great as the first and was worth the severe sunburn. I look forward to the rest of the events this term especially those with our region. Next stop, Fall Rally!

hOPE

food distribution

CARINA COLES || OXFORD ACADEMY

6:50 AM. As my mom’s car drove into the practically barren parking lot of St. Irenaeus, I noted two other Key Clubbers walking across the blacktop. This is good. I’m not the only one here. I said goodbye to my mom, yawning as I closed the car door.

It was our first time dealing with the tape. This shaped to be a fun experience as we perhaps were alarmed that we didn’t have enough tape. Luckily, one of the HOPE members appeared with more tape, and we finished marking off the area. (An even more fun occurrence was when I noticed a Whitney Key Clubber, Amy, wearing the same Key Club crew neck sweater as me! I cheerfully approached her, stating that at the end of volunteering, she and I should take a picture together. I was excited! I naturally introduced myself to someone new!)

It was summer. It was also a Saturday. I normally woke up at 9. But being able to volunteer at HOPE, which stands for Helping Other People Everyday, Food Distribution signified the important a lot to me. For one part of this thing, I agreed to sign OAKC’s volunteers in event was and out. More importantly, ensuring however, it was the Fourth of July, and before that people celebrations began, I received their wanted to help out.

food and other necessities.”

Having volunteered at the food distribution before, I knew the drill, so I immediately jumped in and assisted. I greeted a familiar face, Glenn, and I briskly walked toward the garages where the food was stored and piled onto vehicles. I pushed and pulled the vehicles in the direction of the playground until it was time for a change of pace. Glenn directed me to the garage near the shopping carts, where foldable tables stood. With the help of some Whitney Key Clubbers, we set up the tables, where food and other goods would eventually lay.

Soon enough, the event died down, and few people were left. After washing my hands, I spent some time with Amy and her friends. We took pictures as aforementioned.

9:50 AM. Before leaving, something stuck with me. The same guy I said good morning to upon arrival complimented me. Throughout my volunteering that day, Glenn had playfully teased me about an earlier incident, and I wasn’t entirely sure of what he thought of me. The fact that he made sure to tell me I had done a good job was rewarding. It reminded me that whatever momentary stresses I had faced in those three hours were just that— momentary. It wasn’t worth my time to dwell on them, and in the end, the important part of this event was ensuring that people received their food and other necessities.

I then started looping barricade tape through orange cones with one of my friends, Hitomi.

14

Time continued to pass as the volunteers worked laboriously to sort oranges, organize breads, and hand foods to recipients.
