A LETTER FROM YOUR ltg Hello Division 30 South!

I wanted to thank you all for attending Region Training Conference and I’m excited to see where we will go in the next month! We have been able to serve 18,000 hours since the beginning of the term and it wouldn’t have been possible without your efforts to continue serving. Key Club is constantly happening and I know that we are going to get busy with school but that doesn’t mean you can never come back. We will always be here for you whenever you need the support. We will always be here to make sure that you have fun throughout your stressful weeks of school. We will always be here to make sure that you feel appreciated. We will be here to be your friend. Thank you Division 30 South for such an amazing term so far and giving me the opportunity to serve alongside you all. You all have made me happier than I have ever been in my life and I know that each step of the way, we are going to make a legacy. The legacy where it’s not about me. Not about you. It’s about all of us working together. Coming together as one ohana to do service. Thank you Division 30 South and please keep up the amazing service. Until next time Suns! shinin’ in service, john hoang Division 30 South Lieutenant Governor

GREAT brain

race

ALVIN HUA|| OXFORD ACADEMY

Due to the stresses of junior year, I have not been able to dedicate as much of my time as I previously had towards Key Club. Because I hadn’t volunteered for nearly a month, I decided to dedicate one of my mornings to one of my favorite activities; volunteering. I woke up on Saturday morning at 6am and drove to Miles Square Regional Park. In the pitch-black morning, I tried to find other fellow volunteers that would help me find my way to the race. In this chilly, dark morning, I was able to find the glow of many of our Division 30 South suns, as well as the warmth present in other divisions as well. Together, we worked towards ensuring the event went smoothly. We set up the area, and guided runners, assisting the community, as well as the fight against Alzheimer’s. At this event, I was able to let myself relax and find an outlet to release my stress. This event allowed me to ignore the stresses of school and focus on the community, not my studies. I realized how important it is that I dedicate some of my time towards volunteering, as it allows me to find satisfaction out of helping others, as well as gives me more energy to continue with my struggles outside of service.

BRYAN NGUYEN || LOARA Loara’s homecoming dance, D30S and other regions got together at Mile Square Park to organize A Project Warmth to help out with blankets and service. This was done in extremely hot conditions but sitting under the canopy was truly a great idea. I felt pretty fortunate that Loara earned first for shining club of the month which made me proud as a fourth and final year member in the club. I was also sorrowful for the children who could not afford the blankets they needed but as a Key Club member we will live by the motto; “Caring our Way of Life”; which has passed on for over a long period of time. This was a great experience with the making of 60 blankets ( CAN I GET AN OH YEAH??!!) and I can’t conclude it enough with the help of our very own LTG John Hoang; in which we reunited after we departed our ways. This has been a great experience! Anyways, thank you for reading this and enjoy your day! Go SUNS

EMILY HUYNH || OXFORD ACADEMY With the absence of Light the Night, the excitement for September DCM seemed to be significantly less this year. Light the Night had always been such a huge event, especially for those who were interested in joining Key Club as freshmen. Without it, I feared that there would be a lot less Key Club hype. September DCM, however, ended up being a surprise region-wide event and was anything but disappointing. In fact, blanket making was probably the best service This event event we have ever done because was perfect many people could work on it at and I once, encouraging hope it cooperation, and becomes a the blankets were so adorable. It was even tradition relevant because of the El Nino season. for the There were so many years to amazing, productive things about the come.” blanket making event that I don’t have any qualms about Light the Night being cancelled. Oxford Academy Key Club also got to bond with four new members who came to September DCM! We worked together to make three different blankets: a pink cupcake blanket, a gray/yellow owl blanket, and a blue martian blanket. This event was perfect and I hope it becomes a tradition for the years to come.

club rush

FRANCES LEE || WHITNEY “I feel good, oh I feel so good! UGH! I feel fine, all of the time! Abooga, abooga, abooga, booga, booga,” resonated throughout the quad of Whitney High School as Key Club cabinet members cheered the famous chant to attract more members and to show them what we were really made of: overflowing spirit that translates into the caring that we follow as our way of life.

we can make all together when we set our minds to it. As we tell prospective members what Key Club is about, I can see it all play out in my mind: Key Club tutoring program, Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Operation Christmas, Lock-In… But as my mind extends to the future, it of course has to take into account the impending elections of 2016-2017. It’s sad to think that there are only a limited number of DCMs, meetings, raffles, etc. left for us seniors but I can’t that bittersweet feeling wait for reminds me that Key Club was part of my the coming everything during my year to see time at Whitney.

Club Rush 2015: my last club rush as a high school student was bittersweet and satisfying as it allowed me to give it my all to attract the where next generation of leads Key Club volunteers. As I thought of new ways to publicize and obscure ways to get people’s attention, it not only sparked others’ interest in this amazing club, but it also rekindled by love for the club and all its craziness. It’s easy to forget how important Key Club is to me in the midst of all the senior year struggles and college preparation, but Club Rush was the perfect opportunity for me to remind myself that the combination of spirit and service is what brought me into the club in the first place. As I watch new members and returning members ask questions and smile at our ridiculously hilarious cheer, I smile in return as I realize how big our ohana is and how large of an impact

it all to.”

Club Rush reminded me that Key Club has influenced my life in ways that is indescribable unless they join. As I publicize on Facebook and Instagram, I’m not publicizing to boast future club numbers, but to reach out to as many people as possible to impact their lives as well. But also, Club Rush would not have happened without the efforts of my beloved cabinet of course and especially our members who always return to give back to their “home, school and community” with a warm heart. As they engage in the process and fall in love with Key Club themselves, I realize that my job is slowly coming to an accomplished end and I can’t wait for the coming year to see where it all leads to.

SPIRIT

On Saturday September 12th, 2015, I attended the very first Spirit Day of the term. We had some time at the beginning to just hang out, and obviously Western Key Club had to start playing icebreakers before the actual icebreakers. It was mostly our own club, but there were some people from other schools joining in. Then the spirit coordinators had us play some icebreakers. The first one was a name game (which was confusing at first) and it got pretty intense for some reason. Next came the dance battles. Somehow, the group I was in ended up naming themselves “Losers.” Doesn’t matter what you called us though. We won. Anyways, we also played Simon Says; we somehow ended up doing push-ups and squats, and I’m glad Key Club cares about my health. Now to the reason we all showed up: cheers! It was my first spirit day, so I came there only knowing the “How Do You Feel” cheer. It was really fun to learn them all, and just be my loud and energetic self. Now to the REAL reason we all showed up: spirit battles. The spirit coordinators filled us in on what does down during spirit battles, and we had a practice run. I have no idea how or why I singled out Kristyn from Rosary, but I did. Next thing I knew we were stepping on each other and cheering “WE’VE GOT SPIRIT, YES WE DO. WE’VE GOT SPIRIT, HOW ABOUT YOU” in each other’s faces. I’m pretty sure we’re going to be starting a lot of spirit battles at Fall Rally. I’m that much more excited for Fall Rally now. Spirit Day #1 was pretty great, can’t wait to see the spirit coordinators top it with Spirit Day #2!

I’m that much more excited for Fall Rally now.”

LESLIE AGUIRRE || WESTERN

Take a group of spirited key clubbers and what do you get? DIVISION SPIRIT DAY! I was really looking forward to this event because it goes hand in hand with my position as spirit coordinator! I arrived at the event rocking my Key Club Division shirt and met up with the rest of the Key Club group. Can you imagine my excitement when I found out that Western had the biggest turn out! And, out if the eleven members that showed up, seven of them were new! I honestly felt so excited for them starting their Key Club journey. At the same time I was hoping they don’t get too frightened by our extremely loud spirit. To ease them all into the event, I had the idea to get our new members excited by playing a club favorite-Indian Chief! At first it was hard to get the ball rolling with the game but after a couple tries the members really enjoyed it! Then Our Division Spirit Coordinators started the event off with an icebreaker (of course) consisting of memory. We were split off into groups and the point of the game was to remember everyone’s name. If the person in the middle choses a person, then the person on their right and left have to compete to see who can say the other person’s name the fastest! I really loved my group because it was mostly freshman and I love to think that they still have all these years left in Key Club! After playing in our little groups the Spirit Chairs decided to have a battle between champions! I was so delighted to see that a freshman from my group ended up winning the whole game! The next game we played was a sort of dance off between all the groups. During the first round my group ended up losing with this other group so the Spirit Chairs paired us up and called us the loser team and had us play against the winners. I really liked how they paired the groups and didn’t leave us behind even though we lost the first round. It’s funny because what ended up happening is that the team of losers ended up being the winners in the final round! The next game we played was simon says! Our Spirit Chairs had us do the silliest tasks and it was a really funny way to be silly! The last thing we did was learn our amazing Key Club Cheers! The asked all the spirit coordinators to stand in the middle of the circle to lead the cheers and I felt so honored! I proudly stood in the middle and pumped up my school’s spirit! The cheers were the same from last year so it wasn’t too hard following along! Overall, I loved the spirit day and was overjoyed that we had so many new members come join us! This only makes me look forward to the next spirit day and FALL RALLY SOUTH! WOOHOO Ready for this year, well at least spirit wise.

KIWANIS TAKEOVER

idea!

Kiwanis Takeover is where the club you serve could “take over” a Kiwanis meeting. Your club could create the agenda, lead the meeting, and add fun incentives for the meeting. Kiwanis Take Over could also be a great way to auction off Gift Baskets and items to raise money for your home club or one of our preferred charities.

idea!

Plan a Thanksgiving-style dinner for your Kiwanis Family this season! Plan the event with each branch of the KFamily and find food sponsors. Invite club members from all branches and ask Key Club members to cook and serve food. A suggestion to have the whole family participate in the dinner is to have activities for each branchperhaps K-Kids could set/decorate the table, Builder’s Club could serve the food, Key Club could entertain, etc. This would be a great way to show appreciation and support for your Kfamily and a wonderful way to celebrate this fall season.

KIWANIS DINNER THANK YOU NOTES

idea!

Thank someone today for the service they have done, whether it’s for your country, community or Key Club! We should especially thank our sponsoring Kiwanis clubs because they are a source of constant support, so make sure to express your gratitude this season. And let’s not forget about the veterans who are fighting for us. Get some Key Club members together and write thank you cards and notes to our loving veterans!

idea!

CARING WITH CRAFTS This is a service project where both Kiwanis and Key clubs work together to fundraiser for yarn, knitting, or looming supplies. Following the fundraiser, is a day dedicated to working together and creating hats for hospitals. Do not feel limited to hats, any crafts would be much appreciated by hospital patients.

idea!

BOOK DRIVE Inspire and encourage the love of reading by donating books! Set a date for collection, and make sure to have enough time to advertise the event. Ask a local coffee shop or store if they can sponsor any snacks or little gifts for those who donate books. Then, have members, boxes, and a responsible adult help you to pack the books away and send it to an organization like Open Books. d i v i s i o n 3 0 s o u t h NOV E M B E R 2 0 1 5
