Tran Pham Division News Editor

Hello, Division 30 South! I hope that you’ve been having the time of your lives in Key Club now that you’ve been recruiting a lot of new members! Each club’s hard work honestly astounds me and I love how each and everyone of you is bringing our division little successes to reach our overall goal each month! It’s so astonishing how our term is quickly coming to an end. I feel like it really just started yesterday, but it’s been unbelievably months since I started as your Division News Editor. If there’s anything I’ve learned so far, it’s how resilient and dedicated everyone is to making their Key Club a better place. I’m honestly so proud of you all, and I know that with the few months we have left together, it’ll surely be just as extraordinary in terms of division progress. Additionally, thank you to all of our wonderful editors for helping me put together this November issue! I’m so thankful I have you all alongside me in highlighting really great moments within our division history.

Earlier last month, I asked Jennifer about our progress as a division, and she explained that our division has come extremely far ever since the beginning of the term. If you’ve been here with us since the first issue of the term, you’ll remember that Jennifer talked about how a bit nervous she was for our division because of quarantine regulations. However, all of that has changed! Jennifer believes that despite being put under such difficult hardships, we’re still managing to go above and beyond!! In fact, it’s become so apparent that we’re THRIVING as a division. She continues to appreciate everyone’s hard working efforts everyday and can’t wait to see what the rest of her term as LTG has to bring!

Recruiting New Members By Douglas Lam | Western Key Club Well, around a few weeks ago, us board members had participated in a club rush event to recruit as much as we could for our club. All of us, including myself, have been completely going off the rails as to coming up ideas on how we can get members to join Key Club. We’ve used our social media platforms to promote our club so that anyone Western student who follows our Instagram and Facebook accounts can be notified or could be introduced to the entire society of Key Club. Our methods were to explain why they should join Key Club as to how it could give amazing benefits when they graduate for their own causes. We went through great lengths as we asked our previous board members from last year’s term to help us out by creating a video to explain why students should join Key Club by explaining who they are with their reasons through their own experience from their previous years of joining Key Club in order to persuade the current freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to join our club. While that video was going on, we searched for others that we know or come in contact with on social media individually and we kept on trying to message them every single day. Our expectations were slightly low, but successfully, we have had over 50 students attend our very first meeting. We couldn’t be anymore proud.

D30S Self Care Week By Maile Kobayashi | Western Key Club From Monday, September 21st to Friday, September 25th, Division 30 South hosted a service week, with the theme of self care, in honor of September's Suicide Prevention Month. Each day, different opportunities to earn hours were provided through fun activities that are central around self care. On Monday, the theme was Make It Known Monday. On this day, you could earn hours by creating informational graphics/posts about practicing self care. This was a fun day because I personally enjoy designing flyers. Not only that, but it was a very useful reminder on ways I can practice self care. On Tuesday, the theme was Tappy Tree Tuesday. By downloading the relaxing Tappy Tree app, you can play the idle clicker and tapping game to plant real trees. On Wednesday, the theme was Workout Wednesday. To help relieve stress, members were encouraged to get exercise using the AtlasGO app. This app donates to charities in exchange for your exercise! With a variety of different exercise activities to choose from, such as walking, running, yoga, meditation, and more, there was something for everyone. On Thursday, the theme was Green Thumb Thursday. For this day, members could earn hours by tending to their plants or to their environment. This could include watering your plants or keeping your yard clean. On Friday, the theme was Free Friday. On this day, there was no service event! It simply served as a day to take a break and focus on yourself, whether it be by relaxing or doing your favorite activities. It was basically a free day, and a great day to end the week on. I highly recommend participating in these spirit weeks that the division offers! The themes and the activities each day are fun and promote great causes.

Minecraft Fundraiser Game Night By Timmy Bui | Oxford Key Club This was one of the most eventful days for OAKC virtually. It’s not like I loved Minecraft. I haven’t ever really played the game often at any point in my life. But I knew that it was a very well-designed game that provided a lot of nostalgia. I definitely remember the memories of the Minecraft Hunger Games that took YouTube by storm in the early 2010s. Therefore, when we were able to plan a running tournament that could also help our club’s cause for PTP, I knew this would be a special moment to appreciate for the rest of the year. I knew I wasn’t gonna win any sort of competition, but I knew I had to play to help the cause. To start, the competition was a little slow in the first game. It was a build competition, and it honestly had the most potential as an entertaining event. However, it took many minutes to get started, and it actually ended up breaking down after just a couple of rounds. So, we moved onto Hunger Games and parkour, the bread and butter of Minecraft’s competitive nature. I lost the Hunger Games, but I still had fun. I didn’t win parkour, either, but I loved to participate in all the jumps and obstacles. Ultimately, the Minecraft fundraiser was not the most effective, nor was it executed to perfection. However, I believe that the event was still significant towards our PTP goal. It showed that we were willing to be creative and daring, qualities necessary for being productive during quarantine. Nobody has ever hosted a video game tournament in OAKC. The fact that we were the first to do that means a lot to our club.

Shave The Day By Ashanti Bracamontes | Savanna Key Club Having fun while “saving the day” is what Savanna’s key-uties are best at! Whether it be helping out their community through can food drives or downloading Shave The Day app, they are always willing to help. All throughout the month of September, our members diligently participated in playing the game “Shave The Day'' which helped them donate to charities in a cool, fun, and entertaining way! All they had to do was download the app Shave The Day, collect coins, “shave” as many heads as possible, and they were well on their way to donate to charity! This game was made by Schick Extreme and they teamed up with the St Baldrick's Foundation to make an entertaining game and donate to childhood cancer research. For every coin (aka “points”) our Savanna key club members collected, money was automatically donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Not only was this a fun and easy way for our suns to earn hours but it was also helping a great cause. We hope they were inspired to do more and to help end the fight against childhood cancer!

OC Pen Pals By Ashanti Bracamontes | Savanna Key Club Creating new relationships and finding friends is always welcomed and urged in key club, now more than ever. During these hard and unprecedented times, Savanna Key Club has made sure to find many great ways in connecting our members and letting them know that they’ve got a friend in us. One way of doing this, is opening up OC Pen Pals to not only our members but also, anyone willing to participate! We have teamed up with schools all over Orange County in hopes of connecting fellow key club memes and allowing our friendships to be all throughout our clubs! All our members had to do in order to participate was fill out a questionnaire with some information about themselves such as where they are from and their interests as well! Throughout this time, they will be paired up with a partner in which they can write letters to as well as participate in contests and win prizes! We hope to give them a fun and healing experience with this as well as the opportunity to spark a new friendship!

Staffulty Letters By Zelene Valiente | Loara Key Club With the beginning of the school year of 2020-2021 starting in a remote learning environment, Loara Key Club members have recognized the true passions and courage it is for teachers to adjust to the new teaching lifestyle. Despite COVID-19 restrictions on social distancing, Key Club members and students never fail to appreciate the effort many adults put into their work in order to provide an education for them. Thus, leads into the establishment idea of typing letters to the staff department at Loara High School. Key Club members are expected to open up a google document or create a visual in their free time to express their thankfulness for their favored staff member(s). The requirements to earn service hours is to self-time how long it takes to complete a letter or type 6 lengthy letters within a 3 hour span. The deadline for this service project was due on September 26,2020. After sending the letter filled with kind words, members must send their letters to the Loara Key Club email address or send screenshots to the Loara Instagram page.

Grocery Store Workers By Jamie Koker | Loara Key Club

For me, this event started off rough because of the vague instructions. I wasn’t sure what was exactly wanted so it was hard to even start. However, once I’d started, it was easy and fun. I cut paper up into small squares and drew cute frogs and bears on them surrounded with flowers. They also had banners saying “thank you” or just the words “thank you” in fun fonts. On the back, I wrote a small message saying something along the lines of, “Thank you for all your hard work! We really appreciate it :).” When the event was over, I contacted one of the officers collecting the letters and let them know I would be bringing them over. Despite the small setback in the beginning, these letters were very fun to do. During the extremely stressful week, I was able to sit down for a little while and draw and color, something I haven’t done for a long time. I got to just vibe with music playing in the background and participate in a stress free activity. This even has by far, been one of my favorites. Although it wasn’t a group activity, I think it was the perfect way to wrap up the stressful week. As seniors, we are very busy right now with classes as well as the various things we need to do to start college applications and by participating in this event, it’s like all that stress melts away for a few hours.

Masking A Difference By Maggie Vannavong | Katella Key Club For the month of September, Katella’s main service project was in partnership with Ma(s)king a Difference. For two weeks, our club wrote letters to grocery store and essential workers. During quarantine, we know that many essential workers everyday are having to struggle with working under these conditions, and we thought it best to give back to them and show our appreciation! Many members participated in this event, and we saw many beautiful and talented cards and letters that were handmade by our own members. It’s really amazing to see how many people still continue to do community service even while we are at home. Doing this service project myself has made me be more mindful of the people that we do interact with during this time, with masks on of course. We’ve noticed that many may feel a bit lonely during quarantine, people that live without their families or live alone. We need to be connected to people like children, the elderly, and essential workers through service projects like these that let them know that they’re not alone and that there are people out there that still care. Overall, this was an eye-opening service project for me and many others to participate in. I hope we can continue to provide more events like these to our members to inspire more spirited service, and to stay connected to our community, especially during quarantine.

September DCM | By Nicholas Dinh | Western Key Club September DCM: Rainbow Rumble was a division council meeting that was jointed with 3 other divisions including our division D30S, D04W, and D04N. This took place on September 19th from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. This meeting was conducted on a Zoom Call. At this meeting members from their respective division joined and participated in the events that were offered. Socializing and bonding with other key club members. Events consisted of the meeting itself which went over important business along with recognitions. Then afterwards we were separated in to breakout rooms filled which mixed individuals. In these breakout rooms games such as mafia and animal signs were played. My general experience at this DCM was mostly positive. I enjoyed meeting different people and learning about them. I had a slight enjoyment from the breakout rooms and overall being with like minded people was nice. This DCM was particularly interesting because of the fact that we paired up with other divisions which we don’t do too often. From the minute I got in to the minute it ended, I am proud to say that I had a wonderful time at the DCM and would do it again I recommend for especially new key club members to go to at least one DCM a year, to really stay connected to their division.
