A LETTER FROM YOUR dne Hi suns!

Winter’s settling in, and the sun’s setting sooner, but that doesn’t mean that we suns will stop shining! Congratulations on having another great Fall Rally. Be on the lookout next month for a Fall Rally issue. In this issue, however, you can find out about December’s Spotlight on Service–Providing Basic Needs, recap on past events, and see what will be happening in the future. Although we have so much to look forward to and appreciate, taking the time to appreciate others such as how we did during Thanksgiving is important. It’s the middle of the term, but don’t get discouraged from volunteering and serving others. Enjoy the holiday spirit and the much needed winter break; you deserve it. Don’t let the cold bring you down and keep shining suns! Y jenny chung Division 30 South News Editor

A LETTER FROM YOUR ltg Hello Division 30 South!

It’s finally the chilly season and it’s time to pull out those sweaters and start to get all cozy! With that as well, it’s the season to be giving and it wouldn’t be right if you all weren’t all celebrating here alongside me! November has been such an eventful month for Division 30 South! We have been able to serve over 21 THOUSAND service hours and that wouldn’t have been possible without all of your hard work. Did I forget to mention that we were able to raise over 1,900 for the Pediatric Trauma Program and we were able to get into the Top 3 at Fall Rally South?!?! This wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work that you do Division 30 South. You make me so proud to serve Division 30 South and this term wouldn’t have been as great if it weren’t for you all constantly serving and making me the happiest LTG in all of Key Club International! I hope that you all are ready for the fall season and I know that with only about half of our term left, we will forever leave a legacy for Division 30 South. You all have worked so hard this term and I know that the possibilities are limitless because of how hard you all work. L O V E I LOVE MY DIV! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ALL! Keep on shining Suns!

BLAST FROM THE past

division 30 south december 2015

VIVIAN LUONG||OXFORD ACADEMY On Sunday October 25, the Cypress Community Center was hosting a regular event called Quartermania. At this event, participants could raffle for items valued at $30 or more for the price of one quarter—or multiple quarters, depending on the item’s price value. Items varied from cute handbags to pepper spray with an attached alarm. Well, to explain the pepper spray and alarm, a representative of the organization Damsel in Defense was giving away several items pertaining to the organization’s cause. The organization’s mission was to help women fend for themselves, especially against abusive partners and house intruders. Lately, my school’s Key Club and I have been focusing on Project Eliminate to save newborns in developing countries, but seeing these items and hearing about the organization’s cause reminded me of the problems we still face in our own country.

Besides learning this information, I was also able to meet some of the new members of Oxford’s Key Club! More specifically, I was able to meet three freshmen members. One of the members was actually our Member of the Month Tracy Vu. Meeting these three girls—and seeing the early love and dedication they have for Key Club— was such an honor. Throughout the event, they kept big smiles, and it was clear they were giving back to the community out of the kindness of their own hearts. These three girls reminded me why I joined Key Club in the first place. Meeting these three freshmen also showed me that as this term’s Key Club board was doing a good job so far. Even though we have less members than past years, seeing new members like these who are so in love with Key Club and service showed me that we’re doing something right. I hope Key Club is also unlocking the hearts of others.

CARINA COLES || OXFORD ACADEMY “And the winner of the Minnie Tsum Tsum is… Drumroll please,” David La, a division spirit coordinator, casually spoke into the mic. “Pepe!” A highlight of our division’s Halloween night, Julianne Gamiao won the costume contest with her trendy Pepe outfit. Among Gamiao were other contestants, including a sumo wrestler, John Cena, and an 80s chick.

this cumulative effort will be showcased at Fall Rally.”

Besides the excitement of the contest, the star of the event was the Fall Rally cheering. As soon as members were settled into the traditional circle, the spirit team began to teach cheers, some old and some new. Starting with the classic Weather Report, Key Clubbers warmed up in preparation for the last cheer, Who’re We? 2.0, written with an infectious rhythm. Although the shouting and stomping was tiring, it was worth it, knowing that this cumulative effort will be showcased at Fall Rally. After the cheering subsided, we settled in the MPR, tacos and horchata on hand, ready to watch Hotel Transylvania.

JASON PARK || WHITNEY At Fall Rally Spirit Night, Key Clubbers from Division 30 South gathered to bonds with fellow Key Clubbers, learn the new Fall Rally South cheers, and watch a movie! Although there weren’t that many people who showed up at first, more and more people slowly began to show up. We began the bonding with an icebreaker I definitely consider different. The game Pterodactyl made people in a circle go around and either say to the person next to them pterodactyl in order to keep the rhythm going around in a circle, or squawk like how you think a pterodactyl would. Squawking would reverse the order that the rhythm was going around the circle in. The catch was that your teeth could not show at any given point in the game. Showing your teeth as a result of laughing at someone’s squawk would get you eliminated. After playing this icebreaker for a little, more and more people joined us, and it allowed for a game of musical chairs. 4 groups were formed, and the games of musical chairs commenced. Each round, people were getting eliminated, and the rounds kept going until there was one person from each of the 4 groups remained. The last 4 then were eliminated until 1 winner was left. After the musical chairs was over, there was a Halloween costume contest. Key Clubbers could dress up as something if they wanted to, and the winner of the contest would receive this thing (I actually forgot what it was called). The two most popular costumes within all of the costumes was the John Cena face and the Pepe face. In order to be the most popular in the eyes of the crowd, that person wearing the costume had to act out what that person was. In the end, the Pepe face got the most noise, and won the prize. After this contest, everyone headed outside to learn the new chants and a few of the old ones. One chant that was really cringe-worthy yet clever was a parody of Drake’s song: Hotline Bling. Fall Rally Spirit nights are really worth attending, especially if you are attending Fall Rally itself. At these bonding events, you get the opportunity to connect with your division, and the spirit session at Fall Rally will be much more enjoyable. There are so many benefits that come from bonding with new Key Clubbers, because there is some sort of mutual connection, whether you hate the same school subject, or both play League of Legends. In Key Club, being close to more is merrier, and you can build a second family right behind you to do with you the things that this world deserves: leaders and harbingers of peace. Through bonding events as simple as Fall Rally Spirit Nights, your perception of Key Club and your willingness to partake more than you would ever have had.

DANIELLE LEE || WHITNEY Every year hundreds of key clubbers gather to celebrate and continue the legacy of service together. Through the annual Region Training Conference, new members are invited to learn how to get more involved in leadership and the club itself. Every individual is introduced to the inviting family of our region and get to see how close knit all the key clubbers are even if we come from different divisions. Each color red, blue, yellow, orange, purple, truly becomes wonderful together when mixed up in a melting pot of happiness and service. It was truly amazing to see so many different types of people come together for one purpose: to better our community and the world. The event started off with some icebreakers to make sure that everyone was comfortable enough and then proceeded with some delicious pizza that filled everyone up! Then we got into our divisions and went through our usual division updates and cheers! It was

great to be back with the rest of division cheering for other schools’ achievements in fundraising, service, and dedication. After the meeting we were able to choose which workshops we could go to. Each of us chose 4 different workshops to go to that would teach us better ways to market, publicize, recruit, and even fulfill responsibilities as a regular/board member. Although before the workshops started, 3 hours of listening may have seemed like a long time, during the workshops there was so much to learn the time went by quickly and the day came to an end. By the end of the training conference, my passion for key club has grown so much more. Through attending all the workshops, bonding with fellow key clubbers, and seeing all the smiles, I really enjoyed my entire day and rekindled my love for the community and our special cause that we all stand for; serving our community wholeheartedly!

Region training conference wasn’t just socializing, though. TOYS FOR TOTS

idea!

Toys for Tots partners with the Marine forces and brings toys to kids during the holiday season. You can contribute to your local Toys for Tots campaign by donating a toy at one of the area toy drop locations, host a Toys for Tots event, or volunteer at the local warehouse.

idea!

Combine holiday traditions with an opportunity for others to donate to a charity by building a gingerbread house! You can either purchase or have gingerbread house kits or supplies donated. Then in a local revenue or community center, hold your event where participants pay a price to build a gingerbread house and drink hot chocolate. I highly encourage you invite Kiwanis Family, especially K-kids!

GINGERBREAD HOUSE MAKING GIFT WRAPPING SEASON

idea!

During the holiday season no one has time to wrap their own presents so this is where your club can come to the rescue! Ask local companies and/or stores if you can set up a table where Key Clubbers wrap customers’ gifts for a set price depending on size, amount of gifts, and wrapping paper.

idea!

MILITARY There are thousands of men and women that serve in the army today. Give back to these awesome people by writing letters, sending care packages, knitting scarves, or donating for their current needs such as electric bills and medical care through Operation Gratitude and Operation Homefront.

idea!

SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army is determined to “doing the most good”. This organization takes just about every kind of generous donation: from clothes, toys, appliances, and even vehicles (working or not).
