A LETTER FROM YOUR ltg Hello Division 30 South!

October and November have been some pretty hectic months. I really don’t know where to start with this, so I guess I’ll just start with a recap of everything that’s happened recently.

Beelieve it or not, November has been a record-breaking month

for our term so far where we have served 3837.25 HOURS! When I first saw this number I was truly amazed because serving that many hours in a single month wasn’t even something that I could imagine. Our goal has been to serve 30,000 Hours by the end of the term and with the addition of this month, we are currently at 25,820 HOURS served! At this pace, in 2 months, we should be able to break this goal! Not only that, this month we even met our division fundraising goals! In just 9 months our division was able to exceed our goals of raising $3,500 for the Eliminate Project and $3,000 for PTP. G-DOUBLE O-D J-O-B GOOD JOB! GOOD JOB! Fall Rally South was a wild ride too! We were about to raise $1904 dollars for PTP and that was all because of your dedication and support! Thank you Suns! Not only that, we were able to get into the final round and the top 3 at FRS! Although we didn’t win the spirit stick, what meant more to me was that no matter what you all kept on trying. You make me so proud to serve Division 30 South and this term wouldn’t have been as great if it weren’t for you all constantly serving and making me the happiest LTG in all of Key Club International! You all have worked so hard this term and I know that the possibilities are limitless because of how hard you all work. L O V E I LOVE MY DIV! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ALL! Keep on shining Suns!

how was it?

SANDHYA RAGHVAN||WHITNEY

“HOW DO YOU FEEL?” You better believe that if you go to fall rally, you

will hear this question a lot. However, I enjoyed responding back to this question every single time. This was my first year going to Fall Rally and I’m truly ecstatic I attended because it made me remember what Key Club is truly about. As the day began, I found myself just staring at everyone and everything for a long period of time. This probably sounds weird, but just to clarify, I was in awe of my surroundings. Almost every person was dressed up in Key Club gear and they were all pumped up for the spirit session. Whenever I went on rides and I was waiting in line, I constantly heard the Key Club Cheer. I still remember when several members from our Whitney Key Club, including me, went on a baby rollercoaster and we yelled the Key Club Chant throughout the whole ride. One part of Fall Rally that was truly important to me was the Spirit Battle. Since this was my first Fall Rally, I was very eager to attend the spirit session. Throughout the days prior to fall rally, I heard several Key Clubbers talking about how they lost their voice and how spirit session was very fun. Right before we entered the stadium for our fall rally session, every single Key Clubber was so

pumped up and ready to scream as loud as they can. However, there was no doubt that many of us were nervous as well, considering we all wanted the spirit stick for our division. Finally, it was time for the spirit session. Even before it began, everyone was standing up, screaming and cheering on his or her LTG, and eagerly waiting for the sprit session to officially start. Once the spirit session began, Division 30 South was ready to win. After countless minutes of screaming our chant and constantly staying spirit, we made it to the final round. Unfortunately, we did not win the spirit stick. However, there is no doubt that we all had so much fun. Each and every one of us was standing on the bleachers for a long period of time and literally every person was screaming so loud. It was so wonderful to see everyone so ecstatic and Fall Rally is definitely something I will miss when I graduate. Describing Fall Rally to someone is difficult, which is why I strongly urge anyone that has never attended Fall Rally before to GO! When you stand on those bleachers and cheer, that’s when you realize that the spirit of Key Club plays an important role in our club. We aren’t just a service club, but rather, we’re a club that loves to work with one another and help others no matter what.

KELLY TRAN||OXFORD ACADEMY

Around this time one year ago, I wrote my first article. Even though I was just a general member, what I experienced so far in the club moved me to become an incredibly passionate member.

From Region Training Conference to other Division Council Meetings, I learned to love this club and appreciate how much of a positive attribute it was to my life. Fall Rally was just one of the events I went to that opened me up to how large and loving the Key Club community was. I was thankful for being able to meet so many amazing people and to discover new opportunities to help people.

When we finally arrived at Six Flags Magic Mountain it was almost too much nostalgia to handle. Reliving moments where I found friendship in strangers was just too brilliant of an experience. There’s no other way to explain than that Fall Rally was amazing. The highlight of my day was being able to stand at the front of the stage during our rally session. This was my first year as an executive assistant. Being able to see every division in our session and the volume of key clubbers revved up for service and spirit was incredible. Everything happened in such a big blur.

We didn’t win the spirit stick, but I was grateful that we at least landed in the top The morning of Fall Rally 2015, I came three divisions. carrying my drawstring bag on my back and wearing my spirit gear. It must’ve been one Being able to go to these events and do of the coldest mornings I had been out in for such important tasks allowed me to grow the whole year, but many members thought as a person. Even though going to Fall Rally the same as me, it was worth it to be outside may not seem of value, every moment was Savanna High School at 5:30 AM to go to rewarding, and it’s something that no one Fall Rally about one to two hours away. should have to miss.

AMY WANG || WHITNEY

One of the most insane and tiring events I’ve volunteered at has got to be the ROC Race this past month. I signed up for all the shifts which added up to a 13 hour shift from 6 A.M. to 7 P.M. I had participated in long shifts in the past, but this event was definitely the most stressful. Unlike past events where there was downtime and such, this event was jobs after jobs. Although this event was stressful, it was also enjoyable as it included a lot of interaction with people. Most volunteers worked the registration booth. One part of the job included collecting and storing money. It was nice to know that the coordinators trusted us high schoolers. Throughout the whole day, I switched between registering guests through the iPads and running t-shirts back and forth. This was for a majority of the day since the

race included several waves and race times which resulted in new guests arriving every hour or so. The weather also wasn’t on our side that day. It was extremely cold in the morning, so most of the volunteers wore layers and layers of clothing. Later on in the day, it got hot and the sun came out which resulted in the work becoming even more tiring. At the end of the day, all the volunteers helped clean up by collecting the cones and putting away tents. Overall, even though the event was the most tiring day I’ve experiences thus far, the ROC race was fun! I loved talking to the guests. The first few guests were understanding of my errors and were patient when I was taking a while. I soon got the hang of the process and eventually started having conversations with the runners. This was one of the most interactive events I’ve volunteered for yet!

IRIS XU|| WHITNEY It’s the season for giving, and what better way to demonstrate that than to give back to our community through service? Unfortunately, there are many children around the world who don’t get to enjoy the same privileges as we do. Although can’t go directly there to those countries to give food and shelter to them, we can do the next best thingvolunteer! The day before Thanksgiving, Key Clubbers and CSF members went to the Samaritan’s Purse processing center in Irvine to help with one of their biggest projects: Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child was started to teach young children around the world the meaning of love. Churches and youth groups participate by packing shoeboxes filled with clothes, toys, and supplies to donate to less fortunate children for Christmas. The children receive the gifts that were packed with love and gain much more than just the small gifts in the box; they learn the value of love. Our club participated by sorting out the boxes that had already been donated, taking out inappropriate items and replacing them with better gifts. We also taped the boxes and prepared them for shipping. The work may have been tiring and even repetitive, but what kept us going past four hours was the fact that another child would someday receive this gift and come to learn what service really meant. That day, we got much more than just sore hands and calluses. We were able to give back to a community in need with our dedication.

Although it is easy to learn how to ride a bike, most children never learn about bicycle safety. They know to wear a helmet, but not why or how to choose the correct one if given an option. Hundreds of children and adults are injured each year because of the lack of bicycle safety awareness. Your club can be the change. In celebration of this month’s focus of Pediatric Trauma Program, your club can create a bicycle rodeo. Bicycle Rodeo is more than just an obstacle course, it is an event to teach children about bicycle safety. During this rodeo you should teach children as well as their parents about how to inspect a bike to know if it is fit for the child, how to find a helmet that properly fits and will protect them, how to use hand signals, and bicycle riding safety in general.

“pediatric trauma program” Pediatric Trauma is the leading cause of death and injury among children ages 14 and under in the United States. However this can be prevented. Pediatric Trauma is caused by the lack of awareness of bicycle safety, seatbelt safety, and wearing proper safety equipment such as helmets and knee pads. The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) helps reduce the number of children in our Cali-Nev-Ha District who are killed or injured by trauma by supporting pediatric hospitals and developing programs for the community.

PTP DOLLS

idea!

The purpose of Pediatric Trauma Dolls is to bring comfort and reassurance for the children. The dolls helps nurses demonstrate the procedure the children will be undergoing. Furthermore, kids can use the dolls to express their pain or draw on them for comfort. You can create these helpful dolls as a service project. Contact local hospitals to find out if they accept the dolls and hand them to children.

Project Linus’s mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” For this month, provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
