A LETTER FROM YOUR ltg HAPPY NEW YEAR SUNS!

Over at April DCM, We talked as one big divisions and declared what our division goal would be to accomplish by the end of the year! We agreed that 30,000 was a reasonable goal that we could attain and guess what! We shattered that goal right before the New Year started! Beelieve it or not, January has been a record-breaking month for our term so far where we have served 4512 HOURS! When I first saw this number I was truly amazed because serving that many hours in a single month wasn’t even something that I could imagine. Our goal has been to serve 30,000 Hours by the end of the term HAS BEEN SHATTERED, we are currently at 30,322 HOURS served! We did it everybody! And now let’s crack 40,000! I know that we can do it! You make me so proud to serve Division 30 South and this term wouldn’t have been as great if it weren’t for you all constantly serving and making me the happiest LTG in all of Key Club International! You all have worked so hard this term and I know that the possibilities are limitless because of how hard you all work. L O V E I LOVE MY DIV! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ALL! Keep on shining Suns! shinin’ in service, john hoang Division 30 South Lieutenant Governor

CONCLAVe 2016 IRIS XU || WHITNEY Although we still have a good 3 months left in our term, no one can deny that this Key Club year is ending. And that means electing the new leaders to guide us in the New Year! Conclave 2016 was held on a chilly January morning, but the candidates were all on fire! If you didn’t know, Conclave is essentially the elections for our division. Delegates and other members gather together to listen to speeches, ask caucus questions, and then even vote for the new lieutenant governor. This year’s candidates were stronger than ever! Representing our division were Cypress Key Club President Heaven Lee, Division Secretary Anh Mac, and Division Executive Assistant Kelly Tran. In the end, Kelly Tran from Oxford was successfully elected. Kudos to everyone who had the courage to go up on stage and give it his/her all. This Conclave was also very special to me. It was my third Conclave, my last Conclave, and most importantly, my first Conclave that I attended as a delegate. As a delegate, I had the honor of representing my home club by asking crucial questions to the candidates and then casting my vote. It was definitely not easy choosing who I wanted to be our next LTG as every single candidate did an amazing job and didn’t fail to capture my attention. So look out for more updates in the near future involving Kelly Tran! You’ll definitely be hearing a lot more about and from your Lieutenant Governor-Elect. I’m expecting some great things in this next term and I’m so sad I won’t be here to experience many of those things when I graduate.

ALVIN HUA ||OXFORD ACADEMY This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend Region 3’s Conclave as a delegate, where I, and current president Emily Huynh, were able to vote on behalf of Oxford Academy Key Club. Here, we would play a role in deciding the future Lieutenant Governor for Division 30 South. Once I entered the building, I felt immersed by the gravity of the situation. The decisions made by these delegates from the division would play a crucial role in the future of the division. To ensure my decision was the right one, I spent the following hours attentively listening to the speeches, amazed by the dedication and hard work demonstrated by these candidates during their time spent in Key Club. The time I spent there reminded me of the purpose I decided to create for myself when I became a Key Clubber. It reminded me of the times where I would wake up early in the morning serving the community. I reminded me of the times where I would stay late into the night serving the community. It reminded me of all of the people I met during my time in Key Club, the people who guided me and continue to inspire me. With this reminder, I knew I the direction I needed to head in to become the next president. After the elections were over, the winner was revealed to be Kelly Tran, continuing the line of LTG’s coming from Oxford. Congratulations!

CHRISTINA HUR || WHITNEY January 16th, 2016 Saturday is a historic day because Division 30 South elected their new Lieutenant Governor, Oxford Academy sophomore Kelly Tran. Last year, I had unexpectedly become a delegate and listened through multiple speeches and caucus sessions before making my decision and casting my vote. The year before, I had been a mere member, sitting as a sophomore listening to the confidence in each candidate’s tone. I was in a new seat at this year’s Region 3 Conclave. I was responsible for timing each speech and caucus session and cutting it short when they reached 3 minutes. This is much more stressful than voting. I would be cutting candidates off before they can answer an extremely relevant question or conclude their speech with closing remarks. Each candidate anxiously kept glancing at me throughout their six minutes at the podium, showing me the face behind the false bravado and confidence. They are sophomore, juniors, members who gathered up the courage to run for LTG and put themselves out there in front of their divisions, and for that I respect them. Anh, Kelly, and Heaven all did a wonderful job, eloquently addressing the audience with their platform and confidently answering questions. I can’t wait to see in a year how much Division 30 South has grown under Kelly’s leadership.

ANGELICA CADONDON || LOARA Conclave was such a good experience because it taught me what it takes to be a leader and a committed key clubber. The candidates demonstrated their leadership capability through powerful speeches and difficult caucus questions. Being in front of so many people and not knowing what to expect from them is pretty scary, which is why you need to have guts to be a candidate. While listening to each candidate’s speech, I could really see their key club dedication and how much they cared for their division. They showed how their hard work was for the benefit of the whole division, and it really strengthens our key club family as a whole. I surprisingly did not get tired of hearing their speeches because they all had something to contribute to the overall importance of service and unity. Hearing about each of their experiences actually motivated me to want to improve myself because if I want to become a better leader, I should look up to them. They spent so much of their time preparing and training to be possible LTGs, so I really admire their hard work. Since I’m going to be secretary for my home club in the next term, it was a good experience to watch the candidates and see how to balance school work and key club or how to lead your club in general. I noticed that they all had similar work ethics and ways of dealing with stress and other complications. I became more informed with things such as the core values of key club and different systems to create a more unified and hardworking club or division. For example, many candidates mentioned the club buddy system, which is a way to strengthen weak clubs by pairing them with stronger ones and learning methods of improvement. Even though I’m not planning to be LTG anytime soon, I still enjoyed conclave and how it taught me multiple qualities of a dedicated key clubber. It got very emotional towards the end because we finally were able to see the new LTGs of the future term. This meant that we were able to see our future leaders who will continue key club tradition and make our key club moments extra special. Even though It’s not going to be easy to see the former LTGs leave, we have something new to look forward to. I am very excited for this next term because I can tell that everyone has so many things planned for the future in both our home club and division.

january 16th orange coast college

conclave: my story KELLY TRAN || OXFORD ACADEMY

On 16 January 2016 I went to Region 3’s Conclave at Orange Coast College. On 16 January 2016 I was elected Division 30 South’s Lieutenant Governor of the 2016-2017 term. My two years as a key clubber has really been such a blur, but it’s been an amazing one. From the people I’ve met to the places I’ve volunteered, Key Club has provided me with a unique experience I haven’t found anywhere else. When I first decided I was going to run for Lieutenant Governor, it had to be one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. The position is very difficult and requires hard work. I admit that I wasn’t sure I was ready to take on these responsibilities. I had many other fears as well, like whether the Division would respect me or whether I’d even get past the first caucus session. With these fears in mind, however, running for the position meant the world to me. It was something I aspired after for a very long time, and I wanted to be there for our division in this way. I did a lot to prepare. The road to conclave wasn’t easy. I was on my own, trying to complete a speech, memorize it, and prepare my thoughts for caucus questions took a lot of practice. I remember going to Candidate Training Conference, an event with workshops to teach attendees what the demands of being a Lieutenant Governor is and much more. There was even a mock caucus session at Candidate Training Conference. To be completely honest, I personally wasn’t prepared at all. I ended up stuttering and mumbling myself out of the room. It was a horrible way to end the day, but I grew a lot from the experience. With all the practice I did, I was almost completely prepared for Conclave. The day of, I didn’t feel nervous at all. I was completely confident in myself that I’d get through the event in one piece. The

most nervous I became during conclave was during the second caucus, because I was tired from the rest of the day. But the emotional part of the whole event, for me, was standing in front of everyone and listening to our current Lieutenant Governors announce the new elects. As it came closer for John to announce who his elect was, I held on to the hands of my fellow Candidates. I didn’t really expect to win. Of course, I had my doubts, but I’m proud to serve as Division 30 South’s Lieutenant Governor of the 2016-2017 term. Three more hours had passed and our shift was over. We returned to the bus to go back home. This event has been one of my all time favorites from my experience in Key Club. I was able to interact with the people working the event and actually see how the hard work we were putting in was progressing. When I saw the float on television I saw the big change Key Club has in the community because never had I thought I would be helping out in something so big. It might’ve been hours of hard work resulting in sore muscles but it was honestly really worth it.

BLAST FROM THE past

KAREN LONG || WHITNEY

After being elected as the ‘15-‘16 Treasurer last February, one of the projects that I anticipated planning the most was our annual Lock-In. Why? This is one of the events I fondly remember of the most from my sophomore year when I first joined Key Club; it was one of the reasons I wanted to apply for cabinet. I was amazed by how hardworking the cabinet was to be able to put on a service marathon for 12 hours that was filled with both meaningful activities and exciting games. I wanted to give back to the club that has made such a great impact on my life by helping the younger generations of Key Clubbers create more memories with the different sides of service. On the day of Lock-In, cabinet members woke up bright and early to help set up the room for the sunny Key Clubbers. As our members came in one by one, we started off with some bonding games and slowly dived into making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for our first service project. These sandwiches, which were donated to the Long Beach Rescue Mission, are a part of one of the projects we do every year at Lock-In along with the CHOC posters that say “Happy Last Chemo,” “Happy Transplant,” and “Happy Birthday.” However, some of the new service

projects we had this year were the Pediatric Trauma Program Dolls, non-slip socks, and Letters to the Army. The Pediatric Trauma Program Dolls were made out of two blank pieces of cloth and were hand sewn by our very own Key Clubbers. They were donated to CHOC and will be used by the doctors to explain the surgical procedures to the kids. The non-slip socks will also keep the kids at CHOC warm while helping them stay safe with the puffy paint that was added to the soles of their socks to prevent them from slipping on the floors in the hospital. As a way of getting the members to stretch and have some time outside of the MPR, they participated in our annual canned food drive by going door to door and asking for any donations that could be given to HOPE Food Bank. And with just a few activities left to follow the food drive, my third and final Lock-In came to an end. I know the event didn’t go very smoothly, and I sincerely apologize for that. But I hope you all had an amazing time bonding with your friends while making a difference in the community from your very own school. I would be very happy to know if even one of you considered LockIn to be a memorable service event, and it would make me even happier to know if one of you wanted to come to this event again for the following years.

LARA MATTY || WESTERN Our Executive Board Elections were on Thursday January 14th after school. We are getting close to the end of our key club term that is why we are electing new executives for our upcoming 2016-2017 term. A few days after everyone was interviewed it was Election Day. People were asked to join us after school to vote for their new board next year. Right after school I went to the room of the elections. Everyone who wanted to vote met up and were handed voting papers. The little paper had the names of the nominees. Nhi Truong for the upcoming president, Crystal Ly for our upcoming vice president, Jennifer Hernandez for our upcoming secretary, and last but not least Abraham Vicente for our treasurer. All the nominees stood outside as our current president, Van Bui explained the processes to everyone. Each nomine gave a short speech to why they are going to be good for their position and key club then a few minutes were given for questions anyone wanted to ask. While one nomine gave their speech the others had to stand outside. After the nomine is done we are allowed to vote. We were asked not to vote while the speech is being given. In my opinion I think all the nominees did a great job at presenting their self’s and I think will be good for key clubs future. Each one has a different yet important quality that key club needs. For each nomine I liked something different about them. For Nhi I liked how wise she seemed and she seemed to have many great ideas for key club from her speech. For Crystal I like her confidence and how reliable she seemed to be. For Jennifer I liked her settle and comforting personality, Jennifer will become an important secretary with her personality because members will not be afraid to approach her. For Abraham I liked his responsibility and motivation. Abraham Is responsible in his own way without looking stressed out, he can deal with important things but seems to always be happy, and key club will need him for the members because he will be taking a lot of responsibility in his position but he will still have to be nice, cheerful and active for our sunny members. Overall each upcoming executive member will complete the other and I think they will work well together and will be able to solve their problems no matter what they are. At the end when everyone voted, the results were collected and everyone was voted for their position. We congratulated the upcoming executives then took a picture together to remember the wonderful moment. I hope the future board will work hard to make key club an even better and active club then it already is. I am sure that we will not be disappointed by our upcoming key club executives. I hope the upcoming board will be as happy and strong as we are now!
