A Letter from Your DNE Hello Suns! Wow, I can’t believe this is it: my last newsletter. I’ve been mentally preparing for this for a long time, yet I still can’t believe it. In only a matter of days, my high school Key Club career will be over; this four-year chapter of my life will finally come to an end. I still remember the first time I heard of Key Club on the first day of Club Rush. I remember being so overwhelmed by all the club booths I saw and wondering how I’d be able to choose which clubs to join. Being the shy kid I was, I was too scared to approach any of the booths to ask questions. So, when a friendly girl wearing the Key Club sun costume approached me with a bright smile and asked me to take a photo with her, I knew immediately that Key Club was something special. This was my first time being exposed to one of the four Key Club core values: inclusiveness. Sadly, I was only a seventh grader then and Oxford Academy Key Club was only for high school students. So I had to wait a long two years. It’s been proven to me time and time again how special and unique Key Club is. Since then, I made it my mission to show others how special Key Club is. Key Club is so much more than a community service club. And it’s so much more than just a group of people who cheer about how good they feel. I know there are many of you that I never had the pleasure of meeting, but all of you have impacted my life and played a role in making me who I am today. Thank you Division 30 South for being my ohana. I couldn’t have asked for a better division to grow with. It was an honor serving all of you <3 Sun-cerely,

Vivian Luong

Rise and Shine, Suns! It’s the last edition of our Division newsletter for the 2016-2017 term and there’s so much that I want to be able to say. From hosting my first DCM to my last, it’s been such a wonderful journey with all of you. I’ll cut to the chase. This has been such an amazing journey and I’ve cherished every event. It’s such an honor to have been able to serve Division 30 South and to be able to be proud of all of you. While we have accomplished many things, I believe the first thing we should be proud of is the connections we’ve strengthened throughout the term. I’ve met so many of you and can’t wait to get to know you all a little more before District Convention 2017. Of course, I have many regrets myself. Feeling insecure about myself as a leader, there are many things I feel like I could’ve done better, but nonetheless, I am content with what we have done. With all the achievements we’ve made, it’s hard to deny how strong we all are together. We have built on our foundation of service and strength. I am proud to say that we’ve accomplished so much, including the following: More than 30,000 hours served, more than $4,000 raised for PTP, and over 120 members beyond retention. Now, my only hope is that we can continue this upward trend. I cannot explain enough how fond I am of you, and I can’t wait to celebrate the end of the year at District Convention! Sun-cerely,

Kelly Tran

D30S SPIRIT COORDINATOR If you’re reading this, I can’t help but thank you. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to see what I, someone who had the honor of serving you, have to say about D30S. Thank you, D30S, for allowing me to shine (cheesy I know, but sun puns will never get old so i’ve learned) and become someone who wasn’t afraid of committing to KC. Thank you, Sun, for seeing the best qualities in me, even though I wasn’t the most organized and logical Spirit Coordinator. Thank you, DLT, for putting in the work this div needed to grow and expand this year. Thank you, SHSKC, for understanding me even though I’m usually all over the place at div events. Thank you, to my spirit counterparts (yes, that includes you Trinh), for being the friends who helped me rejoice during the fun times (FRS) & survive the stressful ones as well (also FRS). Thank you, Kelly, for trusting me with such great duties and believing in my ability to help lead our div. Thank you, to myself, for staying committed to a non-profit that truly sticks to its core values and prioritizes its purpose and members above all else. Thank you, God, for blessing me with the division I needed to grow into the compassionate, confident, and caring person I am today and will need to be for the future. I leave you all with this: “I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson Thank you for being that safe place where I can cross the road, Division 30 South.

AN NGUYEN CYPRESS 12

D30S FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR Hello Sunshines! It’s that time of the term when I have to say goodbye to my favorite division! As a senior in Key Club, I’ve had many chances to gain a lot of memories and experiences that help me build my personality and success for the future. Key Club gives me all the opportunities to shine as a member and also as an officer. I have always been an advocate in community service and volunteer. When I moved to the USA, Key Club captured my attention right the first day I attended Cypress High. My journey to leadership first began as I became Cypress Key Club’s historian. My introvert self cracked as soon as I started going out to events, meetings and especially working with other friends in the division. Serving with other board members has taught me on good communication and collaboration. As a result, I was also Cypress’ Treasurer. Leadership, Team-building and Initiative. If I describe myself with one adjective, it would be committed. This 2016-2018 term, I serve as Division 30 South Certainly, I’ve been gaining wider connections with Fundraising Coordinator. Taking care of budgets for Key Clubbers in California, Nevada, and Hawaii. 14 schools in the division and making sure we achieve our goals, I did not only learn to manage my time, I am grateful to be in Key Club. Not only meeting make connections with people, collaborate with my new friends, I also glad to make connection with the partner, but also convince members to participate in Kiwanians. Helping out at Kiwanis Pancake breakfast events. One key point to success is communication or attending Kiwanis DCM, I’ve had the opportunity and flexibility. to listen to their stories and experiences, and many of them helped me in life. The proudest accomplishment I’ve had would be hosting a division bake sale. It was a memorable Therefore, I highly recommend everyone to challenge experience! Additionally, I learned that I can succeed yourself and run for a leadership position. My in anything if I try my best and never give up. experience in Key Club helps me become a better person and a better leader everyday. Besides serving in D30S, I also serve in the CNH Graphic Department Team. Being in this team allows me to Your life is your message to the world, so make it incorporate and promote CNH core values: Caring, INSPIRING.

NHI TRUONG WESTERN 14

WESTERN CLUB PRESIDENT Howdy-doo everyone! So this is good-bye, for now. I’m sincerely glad I joined this club. Key Club has grown to be precious to me, in the face of all the ups and downs. From my first Key Club event--far before I actually became a member-- at my old elementary school, to my first as a President, with a not perfect but worth-all-the-world kind of board and club at the 2016 April DCM. This sounds like the typical kind of thing where I say Key Club broke me out of a shell and I repeat the old phrase of I-used-to-hate-Key-Club-but-now-Idon’t-I-mean-it-like-really but I’ll say it all over again simply because it seems fitting. So hey, Key Club, thanks for making the old grumpy me into who I am now. I’ve learned a lot. I learned what it was like to meet people I never want to let go and learned what it meant to let go. That Key Club is full of good, good people. And that these good people are who have shaped me to become a million times more loving and more, well, me. Thanks for giving me the courage to stand at the front of club meetings as vice president, the courage to speak as a President, the courage to speak of pigeons (hello, TEDx). Countless puns, how-do-you-feel’s, loving Kiwanians, hello’s, nice-to-meet-you’s, seeyou-later’s, PTP, Fall Rally, general meetings,

DCMs, presidents, members, I-love-you’s, and sunshine. Key Club. For those of you who still have some years to go, I wish you all the best of luck. Here are a million good wishes to go. I love you and see you later! With all my love, Nhi Truong

BRYAN NGUYEN LOARA 14

LOARA KEY CLUB ALUMNUS It has been almost a year since I last left my high school alma mater’s Key Club and my life has changed after I have left. I was humbled and proud that I left a good legacy for Loara and I am proud that my high school has talented board members and an exciting staff for me to look upon. Having to stay in key club for only two years was a bittersweet moment. From my first DCM: The Sunny Olympics my junior year of high school, the Sandwich Making all under past LTG John Hoang made it feel special. My president Katherine Pham taught me many good things on how to become a successful person and I am humbled and proud of joining this club. It has taught me real life lessons on how to give back to my community and what I can do to “care our way of life”. My future has been successful and I have been documenting them into my book: Reflecting on High School Moments. In this book, I documented on how my success will change not one but ALL lives. My favorite memory in Key Club would be my senior year when I attended my final DCM at school. Also my other favorite memory would be the September DCM at Mile Square Park as well at Oxford Academy for the annual Movie Night. (see photos). It was a bittersweet moment and service project so I really enjoyed what it had in store for me. My message for others is to JUMP. I want to

remind you these words right here: “I’m going to tell you something that every successful person in this world has done in his/her own life or career. Every successful has jumped! They have taken their hopes and dreams and took a leap of faith toward their hopes and dreams and took a leap of faith toward them. If you desire greatness for your club President, Vice President or board member, you are going to have to jump. You cannot just exist in this life and automatically find happiness, what “Caring Our Way of Life” really is or serving your community or city. You have to live every moment to the fullest to achieve a life of abundance. If you are waking up thinking that there is more to your life than there is, you have to believe that there is. You have to truly believe in your heart, your soul that there really is. But in order to get to that life of happiness and willingness to serve, you are going to have to jump.” For the freshmen, sophomores and juniors you can do this! I believe in you! Have that faith in yourself and NEVER GIVE UP! You are amazing people and no one will be there to punish you!

They were very key club inspired and it was absolutely adorable how they turned out. It seemed that members liked them as well because they were interested in how they looked. Our biggest hit was the triple sugar brownies but we sold out of everything by the end of DCM. Overall, all of the fundraisers were cute and delicious. I helped try to advertise

Surf City Marathon CHRISTINA NGUYEN | John F. Kennedy On a cloudy Sunday morning, John F. Kennedy Key Club were up and ready to volunteer at the Surf City Beach Marathon in Huntington Beach. It was a great day filled with cheering and good times for all the volunteers. The day started with volunteers checking in then going on a bus to drive us to our volunteer spot. When arriving to our location, everyone was hands on, prepping

the tables by filling cups with water or energy drink before the runners were coming. The race had started and some volunteers were passing out the drinks while others were cheering on and filling up more drinks. Even though it was drizzling for a moment, everyone was still having a fun time volunteering with fellow classmates. After the race was over, we headed back to the bus and went to our check in location. When we arrived, the event was over and everyone went their separate

ways. Overall, the rain did not bother anyone and everyone had a fun time near the beach. Hopefully next year Kennedy Key Club would be able to go to this event again.
